Frustratingly slow!

I'm frustrated with Bridge CS3 running on a Mac Pro with dual 3 GHz quad core processors and 10 GB of RAM, OS 10.5.2. Almost everything I do is sluggish. In the light table mode, every time I click on a file to select it I get the beach ball and a 5 second delay before my selection registers. Click on another file, or command click or shift click to select multiple files and again the beach ball appears. Opening files (jpegs) in Photoshop through Bridge takes much longer than I'm used to. I'm working right now on a folder of 690 jpegs, and scrolling with the scroll bar is nearly impossible... Every time I touch the scroll bar it generates the beach ball. The list of frustrations goes on.
I just purchased this computer, and with dual 3 GHz quad core processors and 10 GB of RAM I was hopeful that it would zip around. What's wrong?!? Anyone have any suggestions?

See if your performance issues go away if you make the displayed size of the thumbnails smaller. That is what I've found. My issues, namely lag time in responding to mouse clicks and constant appearance of the pinwheel, only occur in the light table mode and with larger thumbnails. Of course, I'm working on a 30" monitor, and the whole idea was to be able to work with large thumbnails.
I've tried a lot of things to resolve this, most recently upgrading to CS4. Nothing has helped. An employee of mine, working on a "lesser" computer, has no such issues. I'm starting to think it's because she's still using OS 10.4, and I'm using OS 10.5 (Leopard). I don't know if this makes it Adobe's problem or Apple's problem, but I wish they would figure it out.

I have bought my MacBook Pro since July 2011. It has now become frustratingly slow. I tried using the HELP key but did not seem to find any helpful information.  What shall i do?

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • HT1338 My Apple mail is operating extremely, frustratingly SLOW.

My Apple Mail is operating extremely slow. Incredibly frustrating. Slow to load/open messages, delayed when typing messages, painfully slow scrolling through messages. Please Help!

I have been using Apple TV since it came out. While Christmas shopping I saw a great new little Apple TV and thought what a great Christmas present, they are so small now. I bought 4 - yes Apple FOUR.
What I can now tell you is the new one does not compare to the old one in terms of speed. Firstly, when I rent a HD movie on my new Apple TV (tonight for example) the TIME it displays for the download to complete is over 4 hours. Yes, FOUR hours. It also seems that this new Apple TV wants to download the entire movie before I can watch, quite unlike the old apple TV. After 2 hours of downloading, it displayed an error and stopped the download. I then fire up my OLD Apple TV and within 3 minutes (I am not joking come to my house and check it out yourself!) the SAME movie. Even though I had to rent it AGAIN (more money down the drain). I have checked with the three family members I also bought a new apple TV for and they have the exact same issues.
Apple, can you please swap 4 NEW Apple TV's for 4 Old Series please?

  • ITunes frustratingly slow with NAS

I've been having the same usability problems with iTunes since I moved all of my media files to a NAS device (DNS-321) over a year ago. itunes has become almost cripplingly slow. It takes almost 5 mins to start, and then regularly hangs so that I cannot click on any items for 1 to 5 mins at a time. I've given up using it as a music player and primarily use it to sync my iPhone, but I can't even adjust the settings without waiting for itunes to respond. Syncing the phone takes about 30 mins without any input.
Is anyone else having the same issue or have a solution? I'm using a Core i5 Windows 7 machine with 8 gb of memory.

    Hello,
I posted on another thread, but thought I would post here too.  After much frustration with my NAS, iTunes library and Windows 7 x64 install, I finally did what I was too lazy to do in the past and uninstalled Itunes 10.4.1.10 and all of its associated programs (iTunes, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update) on my Windows 7 x64 system.  Be sure to rename your profile's "c:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes" folder to something like "iTunes_old".  I then rebooted my system,  downloaded iTunes 9.2.1 (http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes9/061-8727.20100722.Cde32/iTunes64Setup.exe) and installed it.  I added (File - Add Folder To Library) my iTunes folder on my NAS and let it sync.  Once that was complete I ran "Start - All Programs - Apple Software Update" and installed the latest version of iTunes that it presented.  Once I did that, VOILA, it works fine with no pausing, freezing, BSOD .... nothing!  Everything worked fine with iTunes 9.2.1, but I wanted the new functionality that iTunes 10 offered so it seems installing a fresh copy of iTunes 10.x.x on a new system will not work, at least in my experience.  It seems that we need to install iTunes 9.2.1 first and then upgrade to 10.x.x.  Best of luck!  :-)

  • Frustratingly slow connection after area BB/Phone ...

    Hello all
Around 3 weeks ago (04/09/14) the BB was incredibly slow so I checked the BT Service Status page and the following message was displayed for the area I live in: -
A small number of our customers in the below areas, may experience a loss of telephone and/or broadband services...
The date given for the problem to be rectifed was 07/09/14.  This date came and went but the connection was still snail pace slow (approx 0.77 Meg down 0.79 up).  I made sure I reset the HH4 etc but still no joy.  Anyhoo tried phoning BT support on the 08/09 and there was a recorded message about a problem in the area.  The msg said the issue would be resolved in 2 hours.  I phoned 2 hours later and ... still 2 hrs to resolve the problem.
I left it until Wednesday 10/09 to call BT and register a fault.  The chap at technical support advsied me that there wasn't a problem with the line (bourne out by the DSL line rate - see below) and the problem was my end.  Anyhow I got very frustrated and went on a compulsive-obsessive HH reset frenzy - just to watch an episode of the West Wing on my Sky Now box.  (The BB speed went up in so far as I could stream SD video for half an hour or so if I reset the hub)
Apparently this is one of the worse things I could of done (well in terms of getting a reasonable internet connection anyhow) as the constant resets probably just made it look like that there was a fault with the line and accordingly adjusted my IP Config profile downwards?  (I've not been able to view my IP Config to confirm this).
So on reading some posts in this forum the advice was to leave the HH alone for up to 10 days to improve the speed but that a speedtest could be performed at 3 days to check on progress.  Wel I did a speed test yesterday and only achived a 2.1 MB DL rate at this PC (using twin AV500 Powerline adapters) but 5.5 MB DL if I connected an old Netbook directly to the Hub (I think this may be a seperate issue?).
Today however, both my PC & directly connceted Netbook came in at a super-slow 0.43 MB DL & 0.76 MB UL.
I checked the hub log and have pasted the following lines: -
    12:50:57, 17 Sep. (229605.860000) DSL is up
12:50:56, 17 Sep. (229604.320000) DSL noise margin: 9.90 dB upstream, 3.00 dB downstream
12:50:55,17 Sep. (229603.310000) DSL line rate: 888 Kbps upstream, 8242 Kbps downstream
12:50:06, 17 Sep. (229554.970000) DSL is down after 3824 minutes uptime
12:50:06, 17 Sep. (229554.970000) ETHoA is down after 3824 minutes uptime
12:50:06,17 Sep. (229554.590000) PPPoA is down after 3824 minutes uptime [Waiting for Underlying Connection (WAN DSL - Up)] 12:50:02,17 Sep. (229550.470000) PPP LCP Send Termination Request [User request]
If I'm reading this right It looks like the ADSL went down (nowt in the logs to say that the HH restarted) and re-connected at around lunchtime but would this very short interruption be responsible for the very poor speeds this evening?
Do I need to wait for another 3 days (10 days?) for the BB speed to settle/the HH to retrain?
Anyway I hope someone can help because this is very frustrating
    Many thanks
    Bll

In order to get wholesale to help should your speed be the same the test needs to be done with ethernet connection.

  • After Yosemite Update, Macbook Pro Frustratingly slow, along with many problems after

    My Info:
    Macbook Pro (2012)
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    OS X 10.10.3 (14D136)
    Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
186.54 GB free of 498.88 GB
Until the last OS X Update (Yosemite), I have had no problems with my almost three year old MacPro.
However, after the last update, I have so many problems with my mac, I just feel like throwing
    it out the window.
Unfortunately, I did not have a backup prior to the update, but I backed up my photos and files, then proceeded
to follow apple's instructions (apple support chat) to erase the HD and re-install yosemite from online. Then, I backed up my files and photos from my external drive. (I used TIME MACHINE)
    Fine in theory, but:
    1. my iphoto library was somehow lost, nowhere to ever be found again
    2. I suddenly have issues with my trackpad--the "double click" or "right" click refuses to work, I cannot drag and drop.
    3. I have java runtime error messages even upon startup, without internet connection, even though I have already deleted anything and everything java related.
    4. My safari is completely useless. Freezes even when only using one tab, must force quit every second.
    5. My computer decides by itself when to zoom in and out of a page.
    6. My apps are completely slow, I most always need to force quit them
    7. My trash has many issues-- If putting a file in the trash, it says "moving file to trash" for hours on end without ever completing the action, also, if I try emptying the trash, it's the same story.
    8. Settings. If I try to change a setting, it says "authenticating" for ever and ever without ever authenticating, and I am unable to change any settings.
I have talked to apple many times but have not yet reached a solution.
I have no other resolution at the moment, as I am in Taiwan for another month (My Chinese is limited and there are few, if none authentic Apple stores around)
I have one more month on my warranty so I can *possibly* take it in to a store when I return home, but I first wanted to ask here and see if anyone else stumbled upon the same issues, or if they had solutions.
    Thank you!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a general summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a particular line of text to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
These are not specific instructions; just an overview. The details are in parts 7 and 8 of this comment. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in safe mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. Load this linked web page (on the website "Pastebin.") The title of the page is "Diagnostic Test." Below the title is a text box headed by three small icons. The one on the right represents a clipboard. Click that icon to select the text, then copy it to the Clipboard on your computer by pressing the key combination command-C.
If the text doesn't highlight when you click the icon, select it by triple-clicking anywhere inside the box. Don't select the whole page, just the text in the box.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window to activate it. Paste from the Clipboard into the window by pressing command-V, then press return. The text you pasted should vanish immediately.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • Brand new ipod touch 3 frustrating slow wifi

Dear all, I just opened my brand new iPod Touch 3 yesterday and it connected to my wifi network without any issue.
But then, the browsing has been a joke. Not a funny one. It is slow like you have no idea. I could load only 4 pages in the whole evening. The google front was one of them.
I was sitting right next to the router. It didn't help.
I cannot say I was loosing the connection. Only that loading any page was next to impossible.
My provider of internet is www.get.no in Norway.

Update: I previously advised the following quoted manual set up. I thought had solved problem but it returned. I now have found I think the real root of slow iTouch on Airport Wifi Network. Seems wireless telephone is interfering on 2.4 freq. Channel for 2.4 Freq was set on 1. I have now changed to channel 6. I have now being operating Two iTouch at same time for several hours with no freeze and acceptable speed. Anyone else having hang ups, slow operation, etc. would suggest trying channel change on 2.4 Freq., especially if you have wireless tel. in house.
    Brad
Quote of Maculu manual set up

  • Frustratingly slow performance Mavericks on Macbook Pro

    Hi
I have a mid 2009 Macbook Pro with Mavericks installed. Lately I have been getting frustrating spinning beachball hangs, apps crashing (particularly mail and aperture), boot times of 5 minutes plus, and shutdown times as long as 7 minutes. I've read through as many forum posts as I can manage and not one seems to solve the problem. Looking through the system.log today I have noticed a few error messages that may or may not be contributing, but cannot work out what they mean or what to do about them. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking about upgrading the internal 250GB HDD to either a 1TB hybrid SSHD or a 250GB SSD, and obviously doing a clean install. My only worry at the moment is losing lots of really importan data and being able to recover it from Time Machine.
An extract from the system.log is below. My concerns are about the CGContextErase function, the One of the two will be used error, and the FT Message Delivery Failed errors. All of these are happenning around the time the machine is unresponsive.
    Thanks in advance
    Chris.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Keyboard shortcuts frustratingly slow?

    Hi,
I use heavily the keyboard shortcuts from the main screen. I usually assign the New SMS button to the left button. On both my E51 and E71 New SMS from the shortcut takes up to THREE SECONDS to bring up the new text message dialog. I'd say this is unacceptably slow, especially considering that the same functionality from the active standby mode (whatever it's called now) takes 1 second. Bug? Anyone else?
I'd say the same applies to all features assigned to keyboard shortcut, but I haven't tested that much to be 100% positive on this. Nokia -- please fix, that's on the minor, but a major pain-in-the-a usability issues...
    Thanks,
    Alexander
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    hi breach,
the reason there is a 3 sec delay with the left soft key or shortcut is because the left soft key if you press it and immediately you press the [*] key will lock the phone, this is nokia's default lock key sequence-> left soft key + * key
hence, it is actually giving you 3 sec to effectively press the [*] if you want to lock the phone keys, if you dont press anything within 3 sec, then the phone will then execute the assigned application it is supposed to do, which in your case it is the New SMS...
all nokias are like this ever since...

  • N73 frustratingly slow!

    Hi
My N73 has been slow for some time, so I've been browsing these pages for a solution. This is what I've done so far: -
I changed my log history to one day
I moved all contacts and messages to my memory card
I reset the phone to factory defaults (my code was 11111 as default btw, not 12345 as suggested).
After powering up my newly restored handset I'm saddened to say that it's just as slow as before and is driving me nuts! Does anybody have any other ideas I could try?
    Thanking you all in advance.

You could try a soft reset.
Soft reset. In standby dial *#7370# and the phone's lock code (the Nokia's default lock code is 12345). Warning!Soft reset deletes all your phone's data, so backup your stuff before you do a soft reset!

  • Fibre Broadband. Frustratingly slow.

I've been having very erratic broadband speeds since moving over to Fibre 2 months ago. It's got to the stage now that  I wonder why I ever signed up for this product. http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4196885356 If this poor quality of service (and that's exactly what it is) continues I'll be cancelling my subscription for TV, Phone & Broadband.

Personally i don't have Sky Fibre im with PlusNet(for the sole reason that i can use my own router),i did have Sky's normal broadband for 2 and half years with only 2 issues (both were solved quickly).
Sky fibre does have its issues most of which are down to the router Sky supply (Sr102 Sky Hub)it has an unshielded internal power supply that causes issues with its wireless performance and seems to limit the hubs wireless speed to around 20mbps even if your sync speed is much higher.
With regards to Virgin i should add that i had their service at a previous address form the time they where NTL and the service was almost flawless( i think i had 3 or 4 issues in 6+ years),in the recent years though they appear to be experienceing issues with speed(my business line should be 1gbps but the most i've ever got was 250mbps and they are unable to fix it).
Its also worth noting that any posts made on company forums are usually customers complaining about the service and usually represent a very small amount of overall customers so please don't base your decision solely on what is posted here or elsewhere.

  • In Mavericks my mail app has suddenly stopped hiding 'undisclosed' recipients. Typing is also frustratingly slow in that mode.

Has anyone encountered this problem - and found a solution?

I've left it for a few days before responding because for some reason I hardly got any email for a couple of days and it didn't seem to be completely fixed at first as my rules took a while to kick in again and some junk appeared in my inbox. I've also been too busy to worry about it this week - daughter is starting Uni at the weekend and it's all a mad panic to set her up to move out! Apologies that I posted this on the first thread where this question went before I was prompted to move it to a more appropriate place. I didn't realise I was on the wrong board.
I have had a fair amount of messages today and I'm pleased to say I've only had one copy of everything and the subjects are back to normal - so thank you very, very much as you seem to have solved my problems. I notice that I only have the account for my [email protected] email address and I do wonder whether I need to have an account for the xxxxxx.me.com address as well? Was that possibly responsible for some of the duplicates? Are they interchangeable in Mail?
Despite the fix I do still have the corruption in my inbox, though. I've lost many, many emails and all the problems I mentioned before seem to be permanent in my 2008 mail. I have loads of duplicate copies and the subjects are all mixed up. I also have quite a few recent messages that didn't get downloaded from the server because it thought I was offline.
On my old computer I have everything as it was before. Would it be possible to copy them across somehow without losing my sent mail from this computer - or should I just be content to go to my old computer if I want to refer to anything I've lost?

  • Slow system and application startup times

    Hi,
I've got a 17" Macook Pro (Early 2011) 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 - ever since I bought it I feel like it runs a little slow.
I've been a long-time mac used but I feel a little disappointed with this machine.
e.g.: Startup time takes around 4 minutes.
Applications take around 10 seconds to start.
Chrome sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to start, about the same to quit.
My Xbench scores fluctuate wildly - best I've ever got is 220, worst is 18. 160 is about the average.
    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=526647
    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=537725
    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=544252
I feel that tried everything including:
    - Creating a new user
    - Repairing disk permissions
    - DIsk verify and repair
    - Removing all startup items
    - Installing extra ram (currently at 8GB)
It runs well most of the time but frustratingly slow sometimes and there doesn't seem to be any anomalous activity in activity monitor. I feel that it could be the hard disk, but don't know (I always have 250-350gb free).
    Any help appreciated!

Thanks for the link. I've never seen that page before but I have done everything in that list.
It's not a spinning beachball issue - the system doesn't lock-up often it just takes a **** long time to do some things. I didn't really realise it as a problem until I started using other people's older/lower spec'ed macs and noticed that they run FASTER than mine.

  • Slow internet connection via AirPort on MacBook running 10.5.7

The internet connection via AirPort on my MacBook is frustratingly slow, and I have no idea why.
I have an AirPort Extreme connected to a Virgin Media cable modem, a new iMac and a two year-old MacBook, both running 10.5.7. No problems at all with the wireless connection on the iMac - I get the full near-10Mbps download speed I'm paying for, despite the fact it's at the other end of the house. Not so on the MacBook, where I get barely 2Mb, even if I'm sat next to the router.
I've had other AirPort problems since the 10.5.6 update - notably one common to a lot of people on here, it seems, of the AirPort dropping the wireless connection every 2 mins. This was only 'fixed' by the fairly drastic workaround of essentially abandoning my user account and connecting via a different one.
For the slow internet problem, I've tried resetting the PRAM, turning off my cordless landline phone, changing the wireless channel - to no avail. I can't test the wired connection as my MacBook doesn't recognise my Ethernet port, it would seem, and hasn't for a long time.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I assume that you meant NVRAM as PRAM is not used with Intel-based Macs. Regardless, network settings are not stored here and resetting it won't really help. The fact that your MacBook is not recognizing the built-in Ethernet port is telling me that may have an issue with the system board ... that may be showing up as poor performance with the AirPort as well. I suggest that you take your MacBook in to your local Apple Store to have them take a look.
