Frustration: Airport connected yet not *connecting*

My airport recognizes its apple network and registers four full bars in the airport icon, and yet, try as it might, it still can't/won't connect to the internet. I'm not sure what to do. It's happened before and fixed itself--or perhaps I did something to make it work and now I've forgotten what it was. In any case, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
(I've installed the latest airport software, too.)

Try turning airport off then on again from the menu bar and see if it reconnects. I suspect it will.
If so, I suspect you're running 10.5.2 or 10.5.3. And unfortunately there's no definitive fix, but a lot of people suffering.

A lot of the possible fixes (that seem to have worked for some) are mentioned. But none are guaranteed.

How do I connect to Time Capsule from a Windows 8.1 machine which is on a Windows domain. I have been able to connect from a Windows 7 machine on a Windows domain to a Time Capsule. Airport utility is not displaying the Time Capsule Win8.1 machine.
I have checked that the firmware has been updated to 7.6.4 . Similalrly the Win8.1 machine has been loaded with the update specified in another discussion.

Firstly how are you connecting to the TC.. wireless or ethernet?
Please open a command window and ping it.. ping by name and by IP address.
If ping succeeds at least by IP it should work.
    In windows explorer type
\\10.0.1.1 (or whatever the TC ip is.. that is the default).
Having the airport utility for windows loaded can help the process. As it loads bonjour for windows.
7.6.4 firmware on the TC is useless. It works better on 7.6.1
If the ping does not succeed by either name or IP address yet you have internet through the TC, then your network is setup wrongly. You are have firewalls blocking local IP. Take down all the firewalls.

  • Connects to Airport extreme but not to internet

Whenever I close my laptop and reopen, I lose internet connection thru the airport extreme and I won't get it back. It seems that I will have connection to the Airport Extreme, but not the internet.
Sometimes what fixes it is turning the airport off and then on again (sometimes multiple times). Usually restarting the computer fixes it (but not always).
What happens is this (viewing Sysprefs/network/airport/network status and "internet connect"): the internet connect will report connecting...then will announce "connected", but show no "time elapsed" at the same time the Net status will read "airport is connected to ..network...with it's own IP address and may or may not be connected to the internet" And I won't be.
Then, when it starts working again (after the abovementioned turning off/on) it will start counting time elapsed, then in Net Status it will say "airport connected to ..network. you are connected to the internet via airport."
Also, whenever I use "internet connect" to turn the airport off, when I turn it back on again I will not have internet access, just the messages I list above. The "strenth meter" will say my signal is good (which it should be) and it says I am connected but doesn't show "elapsed time" nor will I have actual internet access.
Again, restarting the computer will usually work (less often, logging out then back in).
Another strange symptom-- When I hit the "disconnect" button under the airport section of "internet connect" it disconnects, then reconnects immediately. When I hit the disconnect button w/ in the Sysprefs/network/airport...etc, it does nothing but bring to the front window the "internet connect" window. So the only way to "disconnect" is to turn off the airport (which results in the above problem).
Side note--I am in the habit of turning off the airport (not the base, but from the computer) when I don't plan on using it for security-- am I being excessively paranoid? I do have my firewall in operation. Should I just leave it (being the airport) on all the time (in your humble opinion?
Sorry if this makes no sense or rambles, it is now 5:30 am and She Who Must Be Obeyed will be getting up in about an hour wanting to know if I fixed the computer yet. I'm tired.
    Thank you in advance.

HP 6700 all in one wireless printer,  got the latest Comcast router.  None of which connect to my computer wirelessly.  Which do I throw away the printer, router, or Mac?  Help

    Contact HP for support.
Explain that you are using a Mac, anticipate the inevitable groan, and wait patiently for their resident Mac expert to return from vacation.
Until then download and install its driver here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=5058338&cc=us&dlc=en &lc=en
Otherwise return the printer and purchase one from a company that visibly supports OS X. HP isn't on that list.

  • My airport extreme will not connect to the Internet

My airport extreme will not connect to my toshiba router. I connected it to my office internet this morning but when I hooked it up at home it simply will not connect. I have tried resetting all the settings and have had no luck. It did work once upon a time. I currently have my airport express hooked up so I know there is connectivity.

I could never figure it out after trying everything I could and going to the genius bar I ended up just purchasing another extreme.  The really funny thing is that I can set up a network between the two and it works fine.  I am using it at work now with out any problems so I guess there is really no loss :-?

  • HT1752 iMac flat panel 2003 shows airport but does not connect

Hi,iMac flat panel 2003 shows airport but does not connect

    No problems.
    Let's double-check your iMac's Internet Sharing configuration:
To setup for Internet Sharing (Wired to Wireless):
    Setup the Network
Cable Modem > (Ethernet cable) > \[Ethernet port] iMac > (wireless) > MacBook
    Enable Software Firewall (iMac)
System Preferences > Security > Firewall
o Block all incoming connections (enabled)
    Enable Internet Sharing (iMac)
    System Preferences > Sharing
o Select "Internet Sharing" from the options in the left column
o Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
o To computers using: AirPort (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
    AirPort Options... (iMac)
    o Network Name: <anything you want>
    o Channel: Automatic
o Enable encryption <do NOT enable at this time>
    o Click OK
    o Select "Internet Sharing" again
o Click "Start" to start Internet Sharing
    o Click Start
Please verify these settings, and try accessing the Internet from the MacBook again. For this exercise, I suggest co-locating the MacBook with the iMac.

internet connection through airport extreme is not connected maybe there is a problem setting it up

Is it possible that using a Netgear Router connected
to the AE (which is also a router if I understand
correctly) could cause connection problems ?
    Yes.
Ensure that that the AEBS is configured to not distribute IP addresses.
Also ensure that the AEBS is on a different channel to the DG834G.

  • My airport express is not connecting with my airport extreme base station. They are probably six years old. My IP address on my express shows 0.0.0.0

My Airport extreme and my airport express are not connecting together. I get an error message saying that my airport express software is not compatible with my Airport extreme and I have use them together for the past five or six years. It says I may need to change my IP address on my computer or something like that but I don't know what to do. the IP address on my express shows 0.0.0.0. Should everything be on the same IP address? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Please refer to the information already posted above:
If you see A1084 or A1088 there, your older Express is not supported by the newer version of AirPort Utility that you have.
If you have another Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard, or a PC, then you could use that computer to administer the older Express and it will work on the network along with the AirPort Extreme.
If the Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard or PC does not "see" the A1084 Express, you will need to "hard reset" the Express by holding in the reset button for 10 seconds and waiting a full minute for the Express to restart. Then, reconfigure the Express again.

  • IMac will not establish an airport connection

I realize that there are pieces of this question all over the threads and good but I am truly at my wits end and looking for any other options. I have an iMac (2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 about 14 months old) running OS X 10.6.8 and am unable to establish an airport connection (continues to get a self-assigned IP starting with 169...) with my Fritz!Box 7300 router. I can get a connection fine with the ethernet and I currently have 2 iPad's, 2 iPhone 3GS's and a MacBook Pro all working fine off of the wireless internet, it is simply the iMac that continues to get a self assigned IP address. I have attempted every fix I can find on here and google to include deleting various files (com.apple.alf.plist, com.apple.airport.preferences.plist, networkinterfaces.plist, preferences.plist) and rebooting, deleting the keychain for the router, resetting the router at various points in the troubleshooting process, changing the router channel, re-installing OS, turning the firewall on and off and anything else I can find to no avail. I had a glimmer of hope two days ago when it connected via the airport card for about two hours and then it stopped working again. I also tried to manually enter an IP address, the router information, etc. using my MacBook settings as a template and an IP address that was in my routers range, no luck. Oh, we also took it to the Genius Bar who stated there was nothing wrong with the internet on the computer. Is there a chance my airport card just went bad? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, doesn't seem it'd be the Wifi card if it worked foe Apple!?
When you did the Manual IP, did your MBP get kicked off?
How many connections does your Router allow? Is the Router set to only allow certain HW MAC addresses?

The internet connection (via Airport) keeps timing out while the Airport connection is still on as confirmed by the Mac and shown on the task bar.
    Any ideas?

  • Current version of airport utility will not connect with older airport express

I was given an older aiport express that I want to add to my network for iTunes sharing.  I have an airport express and aiport extreme currently.  I am running Mac OS x 10.7.5.  My current version of airport utility does not support this express and it tells me to download utility version 5.6. When i try to install version 5.6 i get an error message that tells me to contact software manufacturer.  I'm sure there is a simple fix but I don't know what to do.  Any help would be great!

    Hi
again , at least for getting 5.6 installed, look at my post earlier, or better to JEFFY's and download an much better alternative "unpkg", to get it ( 5.6) on to  your  mac.
Then, though, getting to use it to configure your older AP as I attempted is anothe matter. I didn't succed so far..
Good luck to you. If it works pse tell .
    Thanks.

  • Fresh installation + what updates = good Airport connectivity?

Last summer I did an erase and install and apparently applied some updates that made my Airport become extremely problematic. See Airport extremem card can't hang onto wifi signal - what to do? and PB's Airport Extreme card not staying connected - please help diagnose .
Basically, my Airport internet connection drops anywhere from 5 times an hour to 5 times in 5 minutes! (no joke ). I'm reinstalling all my software and data on a spare Firewire volume and when it's up and running I'll clone it back to my PBs internal drive.
What updates should I apply and what should I avoid? So far I started with 10.3.2 (the PB's original OS) and applied the 10.3.9 combo and these updates.
"Mac OS X Update Combined" (10.3.9)
    "Apple Remote Desktop Client" (1.2.4)
    "GarageBand Update" (1.1)
    "iSync" (1.5)
    "iPhoto Update" (4.0.3)
    "iCal" (1.5.5)
    "iDVD Update" (4.0.1)
    "iMovie Update" (4.0.1)
    "Daylight Saving Time Update" (1.0)
    "Java 1.4.2 Update 2" (1.4.2 Update 2)
"Java Update for Mac OS X v10.3.9" (1.0)
    "Java Security Update" (4.0)
I plan to install the bluetooth updater so my headset will work, I think that would be Bluetooth FW Update 1.2.
I plan to avoid Security Update 2004-10-27 and 2005-004 because I think they were on my list to avoid from when they were new and troublesome and I think I accidentally installed them last time.
What about "AirPort Software 4.2" ?
AirPort 4.2 fixes connection problems and resolves security issues with WPA2 wireless networks.
Right now all my Airport software is version 3.2 (from the base install + 10.3.9 updater).
What about "Java for Mac OS X 10.3, Update 5"
adds support for the latest Daylight Saving Time (DST) and time zone information as of January 8, 2007. This release updates Java 1.4.2 to version 1.4.2_12 and addresses a problem where some Java applications fail to launch.
What about Security Update 2007-002 and Security Update 2007-008?
Any recommendations on the latest most stable version of Quick Time (I haven't updated that yet and it's still 6.5
After some of these updates (like QT) Software updater will suggest other Security Updates and so... please tell me if there are others to avoid.
The nice thing is that I can test this all out on the external drive before committing to it.
    Thanks for any help.

  • MacBook Pro 2008 Airport connections

I know that a number of people have posted messages regarding the problem with Airport connections but I have not found a solution yet. My MackBook Pro 2008 has iOS 10.6.8. I can see Airport on (bold signal) but I can't access the interenet though I am able to use Skype. This had happened before but the problem was resolved by itself. The laptop works fine when connected by an ethernet cable. Can any one suggest any solutions please? Please note that I do not use Airport Exress or Time Capule as far as I know.
    Thank you.

Can your MacBook Pro (MBP) connect to other wireless network AND gain Internet access, just not yours? Regardless, when a computer can connect to the local wireless network BUT is unable to gain Internet access, it typically is due to missing or corrupt DNS server information. Think of DNS as the Internet's version of a phone book.
One simple test, is to enter the web site's actual IP address instead of its URL in your web browser. If you can now access the website, you verified that the DNS information in your MBP AirPort profile is incorrect.
Another test, is to substitute a known set of DNS servers, like the ones provided by OpenDNS. Again, if you can access the websites by their URLs, it was the DNS servers information that was incorrect.
