Frustration in Shortening Clips

Hey everybody!
I am a fairly new Mac user and am just starting to get into the world of iMovie - I am breaking myself in by editing my own recent wedding/honeymoon footage.
So here's the deal: Got a clip(s) of a specific size and am trying to shorten it by "placing my cursor on one end of the clip until it changes" (much like in Garageband) . Except - surprise! No worky! Any thoughts on why this is happening? The cursor just sits there and doesn't change at all!
Note: I just upgraded my system from iLife '05 to '06. It used to work. Leme know what you think! Otherwise, I'm going to have to edit my own wedding video by ussing the crop marks. I swear - I'm gonna be in this computer room 'til I die!
Thanks for the help!

Ya I think what Sue says is probably what I meant
I still use iMovie version 4, which does support direct trimming, but I nver use it because, at least in version 4, it is not very effective as you can only direct trim the TRUE ends of a media file, not the ends of all clips.

  • Shorten Clips In The Timeline And Shorten The Project Duration

When I shorten a clip in the timeline by dragging on one end a blank space appears. I know this is in order to keep the project the same duration but I do not want this. I am happen for the project duration to reduce in accordance with my timeline clip editing, without any blank spaces appearing.
How do I achieve this noting that this seems to be a recent default situation, whether I use FCPX 10.09 or 10.01.01.

Thank you Tom and Luis, but I'm not with any of this. I can add a clip to the timeline or insert a clip into it via the "arrow tools". If I attempt to shorten the clip IN the timeline there is a blank space representing the amount trimmed from the clip.
I want the next clip along to that I've trimmed to automatically move along the timeline albeit shortening the total project duration.
Pressing "A" on the keyboard doesn't achieve this.
I simply click on the clip in the timeline  to highlight it with the yellow margin. I then click on one "edge" with the arrows symbol and drag the edge inwards. This then leaves the space I do not want.
As for "Preferences" when I click this under "Final Cut Pro" i see nothing either relevant to this problem or that I could trash.

  • IMovie auto shortening clips, cant re-size

I convert stills into clips and then use these as transitions. However as I add more transitions and video clips, iMovie keeps shortening all the actual video clips in the project to the point where they are only 1 second if that. If that wasn't bad enough it does not let me re-size them to their original length. In fact just starting a new project and adding a video clip (just one clip in an otherwise empty project) creates a loss of 1 second for me. Can anyone help with this?!? It is starting to look like a waste of $5.

When you tap the photo you should see two yellow circles, one on the start and one on the end of the photo. Drag the end sircle to the right and this will make the photo display longer in the video.
In the video clips, there seems to be some loss due to the transition function.

  • Shorten clip before import to fcpx

Looking for the best way to shorten a 20gb gopro file before I import to an event in fcpx and I am stuck with the whole 20gb in my fcpx structure.
Any ideas that I am missing? Many thanks!

Mark, Here's an addendum to my earlier post:
SETTING MULTIPLE RANGES IN THE SAME CLIP
To set multiple ranges in the same clip – this is especially useful when importing multiple portions of the same source clip – press Command while dragging to select a range within a clip.

  • How to shorten clips on iMovie

I am doing a project and were using iMove to splice and edit the video, however we cannot get our clips to stay short despite the fact that we saved them that way Does anyone know why it's doing this? If someone has any tips/tricks to help that would be great!
    Thanks

  • Sony Memory Recording unit plugin shortens clips

    Hi all
For months I've been tearing my hair out during editing when countess clips shot on our Sony Z5's all stopped short of where they should have. I blamed the camera operators, including myself, but after I found a dozen 5 second panning clips in a row all stopped short before the pan ended, I knew it wasn't camera operator error and turned my attention to Log and Transfer.
Within FCP 7.0 we capture HDV footage from flash cards using Log and Transfer with the Sony memory unit plugin for FCP installed. A look at the backup files (a simple direct copy from the flash card) shows the clips run their full length as filmed. Something is obviously happening during the FCP import.
Has anyone else seen this problem? Can't say I've noticed this on our EX1, but then again that uses a different plugin for log and transfer.

My No.1 editor's complaint "too much footage". Also, with our move to EX1 cameras on the high
end weddings, AU$800 32Gb SxS cards are too valuable to fill with overshooting. So now we try to
shoot more economically, but it appears I have to tell the team to ignore that and just let it roll
like a madman when you use a Z5.
When I was a kid shooting 16mm for news, I shot like a madman, insisting the B-roll was precious and film was cheap. My boss informed me, "in this business, shooters are cheap and film costs real money." So I learned to shoot a 2-minute story on four minutes of film by carefully preplanning the story with the reporter and editing in my head in the camera. Reduce the number of choices and you reduce the editing time, simple math. The real problems with any type of field production arise when the producer cannot function as a decision-making machine and assumes spraying everything from multiple points of view will yield a tight edit.

  • Best way to shorten captured clips?

Sorry if this has been asked a thousand times, but I didn't see it in the FAQs.
I have a Canon Vixia camcorder capturing HD and stored in AVCHD format once I drag the video clips to my computer. They look great on a 30" Apple Cinema Display.
I am looking for the best way to go through my keeper video clips and clipping each end of the segment to get rid of the unnecessary footage and keeping the part of the clip I think I might ever use. Actually, I know how to clip the image, I am looking for the best workflow to go through a lot of long clips and cut them down and save them for long term storage without losing any image quality.
If I have 100 saved clips that could each be shortened, what is the best workflow in Premiere Elements 8? Which output format and settings would be best?
The original Canon files were saved with MTS extensions on a PC. My few tests tonight saved the shortened files as M2T. On the initial run through, they appear to have the same image quality when viewed on my screen.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    M. Jackson

    Hi Steve,
I think that is exactly what I did on my initial tests. I only opened one raw clip, trimmed it in the timeline, and then saved it as an MPEG. There were a few different quality options in the list and I wasn't sure which one would give me the best quality image (no image quality loss).
So, if I created a new project, dragged thirty clips into the import field, I could then put one at a time in the timeline, trim and save? Then remove the first clip from the timeline and put in another one, trim and save? I'd only need one Project and would continually be adding and deleting files in it. Seems logical with my limited experience with Premiere.
I sometimes set up a tripod with the video camera and start filming a moose resting under a fall tree. I set up another tripod and photograph him with a still camera. The video might run for 5 minutes, but have essentially nothing unique on it but maybe him shaking the leaves off his antlers. I'd only want to save that little segment and dump the other 4 and a half minutes. As another example, I might have five minutes of an Oxbow Bend sunrise in Grand Teton National Park. The only part I might want to keep is the shortened clip where a flock of geese fly through the scene.
    Thanks again,
    M. Jackson

  • Is there a way to make a long clip into a short clip without compressing it any further?

Is there a way to make a long clip into a short clip without compressing it any further?
I went through all my old formats (VHS, hi8, miniDV, etc) and captured them. They end up as .mov files. Some of the longer 2hr ones are about 28GB.
If I am making a new project and I want to edit in short clips from several of these longer files, is there a way to save a short clip from an existing file without compressing it any further?
In other words, lets say I have 10 2hr files, but I know I only want 1 minute from each. Is there a way to select the good 1 minute from each .mov file that I want to use and a version of this 1 minute from each in the folder I am working on the project in, without compressing them??? I like to keep all of the content I am working with on a project in its own folder in case the project needs to be moved from one hard drive to the next while I am working on it. I would hate to have to make a folder that is 280GB or more when I only need a minute from each larger file.
I hope I have asked this in a way that is understandable. Maybe there is a term for what I want to do, that I don't know yet that has its own help section too.   Thanks for any assistance

Thanks Jon - That's kind of where I started, but the part of that I need help with on is the second to last step.
"Export using a codec that matches the source material. "
The codec they were captured in is .mov at DV quality, but then after picking .mov, there are so many other options to choose from as far as compression goes from sound quality and settings, to how many passes, etc. I just want the new clip to be of the same quality as the original clip. It looks so complicated and its not clear to me what options to pick to match the original.
Is there a setting or preference that helps you to match the compression settings of the original clip? Or is there  a way to detect the settings of the original clip so I can repeat that in the shortened clip??

  • Best way to change the speed of a sequence of linked short clips?

I have a sequenced project of about 150 short 1 second clips linked together via a crossfade transition... I would like to make the timelapse faster. What is the best way to change the speed of the sequence or the clips themselves? I would rather change the sequence for it would be less labor intensive I would imagine!!
    Thanks
    RD

Or...select all the clips in the timeline, control-click (or right-click) on them and select 'Duration'. Change the duration to whatever will fit/fill the timespan you need, then hit OK.
If you're needing to change the dissolve as well, you should remove all but one of them first, then drag the remaining transition into the browser. Dbl-click it into the viewer, set the duration of what you want, then use the hand icon at top right and drag it back into the browser. Rename it relevent to it's new duration, then control-click on it and select "Make Default".
Now, set an inpoint at the first frame of your clips in the timeline, then drag all the shortened clips from the timeline into the canvas and release where it says 'Overwrite with Transition'.
That's another way to accomplish this.

  • How do I transfer EDITED clips from one IMovie to another

I have tried to transfer edited clips (with original sound) from one IMovie to another. However, the system transfered the original clips instead of the edited clips.
Does anyone have any tips on how to transfer the edited clips only and not the original clips.
    osx 10.3.9 and Imovie 5.0.2

That will copy the original, imported material, not
the edited version. I.e. if I trim an imported clip,
the .mov file will still be the un-trimmed,
    full-length clip.
Not the movie Lennart means. The movie Lennart refers to — called the Timeline Movie.mov and located in the Cache folder inside the project — plays the edited Timeline of Project A. (It's a reference movie containing pointers to the audio and video files in the Media folder.) When that Timeline Movie is imported to Project B, it delivers all the edited video and audio of Project A as a single clip to Project B. (He's not referring to the video and audio files in the Media folder, which I think you mean.)
taronger, if all you want is a single clip, another way is to select the clip in the iMovie Timeline and export it to a Full Quality movie. Be sure to turn on the checkbox "Share selected clips only" in the export dialog window. Later, import that exported movie to another project.
I did some trials and found out that transfering edited clips (not original clips) can be done by selecting several consecutive clips in the original movie, and using the copy command. It is then possible to go to the new movie and use the paste command to transfer the edited clips.
Yes, that delivers the clips, but it doesn't deliver shortened clips. It delivers the entire source file of the clip. So if Clip 2 is 5 seconds long but its source file is 3 minutes long you get the entire 3 minute source file.
It's sometimes easiest to export the clips you want from Project A back to the camera, then re-import them to Project B. That accomplishes everything you want, delivering the edited material trimmed to the shortest length possible.
Note that the clips must stand shoulder-to-shoulder on the Timeline and the "Share selected clips only" checkbox must be checked. (Some versions of iMovie fail to stop the export to the camera at the end of the last clip. You may have to stop it manually.)

  • Can Bridge trim video clips?

I know Bridge can be used to view and rate video clips, but can it also be used to trim video clips down and then export the shortened clips?

Bridge is just a file browser.  It doesn't open or edit anything in any form.
It just hands the files to the appropriate application, whether this be Photoshop, Adobe Camera Raw, Illustrator, InDesign, Microsoft Word, or whatever.

  • Editing Clips with Content Browser 2.1

Is it possible to shorten clips in Content Broweser 2.1? I've tried but it won't work.   I used to be able to do this with XDCAM EX Clipbrowser.  Do I need different software?
    Thanks.
    Craig.

yes. mark in/out, click on the UPDATE button under the preview monitor, then right click and select 'make new clip from in/out region', you can also mark/inout, drag to a new location and then select the option to use the markers to create a subclip during the move/copy. this is supported with all formats except NXCAM.

  • Trimming Clips Before Editing

I know how to shorten clips in Premiere when working on a project.
However, I have lots of clips saved to my computer that are way too long. For future viewing purposes, I would like to trim them down so that I don't have to view all the non singnificant parts when I go back to review the footage.
Example: I have a 5 minute clip and only want to save 20 seconds worth of footage.
Is there a way I can trim the bad parts out and save the good parts to my computer without having to import and export into a software program? I don't want to lose any quality.

In Quicktime Player Pro, you can trim movies and then save the trimmed version without recompressing or losing quality.
I'd been told that if you export from Ae or Pr using the same as source codec and dimensions, etc., there is no loss in quality.  However, I saw a test debunking this once, where the tester exported this way, imported the exported clip, and repeated the process 10 times.  The "10th generation" was inferior, which is easy to see when you stack the two versions and put the higher one in DIFFERENCE mode.  This was using a codec, of course.  If the original source was uncompressed, then all succeding generations should be the same.  But, how often do people get uncompressed footage?  Hardly ever, unless it's from that Convergent Gemini gizmo or a RAID connected to a high end camera, like a Viper or Genesis.

  • Photoshop error - layer clipping.

Whenever I try to add a new adjustment layer, it adds it like this:
I know that it's clipping onto the layer below, but I don't know why. Because while I know the easy fix of holding down alt and clicking between the layers, it's still quite frustrating that it clips to the layer below every.single.time without me having told it to do that.
is there a way to make it stop?

In the adjustments panel uncheck Clip to Layer to prevent future unwanted clipping masks.

  • Clips I've logged and captured are too fast

I'm trying to log and capture AVCHD clips from an external harddrive and use them in FCE 4.0.1
All seems to be going well, I can preview them and they look great.  Once I put a clip into the queue, it transfers over into my project.  The only problem is that it plays twice as fast (I can't readjust the speed in the timeline or else it looks choppy).  The audio plays normally and gets cut off when the clip ends.
It's endlessly frustrating that the clip looks great in the load and transfer window when I'm previewing it, but is completely wrong in the project.  What is going on?  And how can I fix this?
    Thanks

From the existing info, particularly the clip info it seems like that clips are AVCHD Lite NTSC.
Panasonic still cameras typically use this format. It's not a standard AVCHD format that FCE likes.
It won't work directly in FCE so you will have to transcode to Apple Intermediate Codec.
Try Streamclip from Squared 5 and set the Quicktime export to match FCE>Easy Setup>AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920 x 1080i60.
BTW: To identfy the EXISTING Sequence properties right click the Sequence Icon in the Browser and select Item Properties.
