Frustration over connecting Windows laptop to VPN over AEBS

A bit of background: I'm helping a buddy of mine who's got an iMac (Leopard) on a WEP2/Personal secured wireless network using AEBS (80211.n) and the latest firmware. No problems with that setup. However, he also has a Windows XP Professional-driven Dell laptop which requires VPN access for his office. His office prevents the use of wireless connections, so he plugged in a cable to one of the AEBS Ethernet ports, connected it directly to his laptop, and attempted to connect. Unfortunately, this doesn't work; while he can see his network and seems to get into his VPN, he cannot connect to Exchange Servers and networked drives -- leading me to assume that the connection wasn't established properly. This result is consistently repeatable.
How we currently solve it: If we disconnect the AEBS from the cable modem and make a +direct connection+ between the cable modem and the laptop, he's successful getting the laptop on his VPN. The downside is that the iMac's connection is then hosed while the Windows laptop is connected. Disconnect the laptop connection and reconnect the cable modem to the AEBS and voila! The iMac's back in business.
So here's my question: How can the AEBS and/or the laptop be properly configured such that an Ethernet cable can be connected between the laptop and the AEBS without disconnecting the cable modem from the AEBS. In other words, keep the iMac connected and add the Windows laptop (hardwired to AEBS) so that the latter can establish its secure connection to the required VPN and both computers can access the Internet simultaneously.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I know this can be done; I just don't know how.
Thank you.

I've experienced a related issue. I can connect to my office server from a Windows XP laptop via VPN, however I cannot access my Exchange server or network folders. In working with my IT guy and trying various troubleshooting options I think it may be a problem with DNS name translation through the AEBS (round) (I've had same issue with my Airport Express). For example, when connected via AEBS to VPN I can ping the IP address of my Exchange server successfully; however, when I try to ping the server by name I receive a timeout error. I'm stumped, any ideas???

  • How can i connect windows(laptop) to lion server?

    Hi..
We in our company use mac's as clients. We use Mac OSx 10.7 lion server. We have a lenovo laptop for general purpose. Now can we connect that laptop in network. So that can we remotely use mac screen sharing.

Are you asking how to connect to FileSharing from the PC ?
Or are you asking about screensharing?
    On Server
If file sharing, edit the SharePoint and make sure that
Windows File Sharing (SMB) is enabled
    On the PC:
    Map a network drive
    \\10.0.0.1\Share
(your IP and the share name)
Make sure you check the box to use another account or user/password
It will then ask you to enter a password.
In general, the above should work.
There are some cases where it requires a few other tricks.
    Good Luck

  • Wirelessly connecting Windows laptops to an iMac G5 to share files Interne

I am wondering if someone could tell me how I can share files with windows PCs wirelessly but also securely. I have setup a network so that Windows PCs can access my iMac G5 that connects to the Internet through the airport card. I can get the windows PCs (laptops) to access the Internet through my iMac G5's airport card but I also want to share files back and forth wirelessly between the Windows PC laptops and the iMac G5. I am able to view all my iMac G5 files on my Windows PCs but that's not what I want. Isn't there a way to make it more secure so that only a shared folder is available for access by the Windows PCs? Right now if I go into Windows and setup a "My Network Places" then the PC has access to all those files on my iMac and that's not what I want. At this point someone with access to my iMac G5 could just wipe out everything. Not secure at all.
Could you guys give a novice some pointers?
I am still having problems with this. I can get my laptop to share my internet connection with my mac, but once I set a password on my Mac--well I can't get my laptop to connect. It is quite strange.
Someone suggested me to look here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1161.html
I tried to follow the directions on the link he suggested, but I'm using OS 10.3.9, so maybe that is the reason the directions are not exactly the same for my system.
Right now, I can open the System Preferences, go to Sharing preferences, turn on windows sharing...but that's as far as I can get.
Do you know if there is any document that can show me how to securely share files with a windows PC for my version of Mac OS?
I would also like a way to share files from my iMac to the Windows PC as well.
I have successfully been able to get my Windows Vista laptop sharing the internet connection with my iMac. The problem is that this connection is insecure, so therefore anyone can connect.
I have no idea and have not had luck finding any fix for this by browsing/search the knowledge database.
How can I set it so that anyone that wants to use the shared Ethernet connection (via my airport) has to input a password?
Every time I try to associate a password with the connection, my laptop is unable to share the connection any longer.
Windows will just tell me that the wireless connection is incompatible because of the security features of that network. It doesn't even ask me to input the password.
Besides this, I still am unable to get the file sharing to work. Is this because I'm also trying to share an internet connection between the two computers?? or...
After working on this problem for awhile, I've found some helpful information on the web that refers to connecting a Vista computer to a MAC with OS 10.5. Even though this is the case, I got my iMac to share it's internet connection and now I'm able to access the Windows vista laptop files on my iMac. I still, however, am unable to access the files on my iMac through the laptop. I've followed all the info on this website:
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3022.html
but I'm still not having any luck.

how can i use my apple ID with the itune store over my windows laptop

If you don't have iTunes installed on your laptop then you can download and install it from here : http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
You can then log into your account on it via the Store > Sign In menu option (on iTunes 11 on a PC you can get the menus to show via control-B) :
And you can then select the Store on the left-hand sidebar (you can enable the sidebar via control-S), and then browse items in the store and buy them by clickin on their price.

First problem: You're fine. The hotter it gets, the more the fans spin up. The computer is designed so that at max load, at max fan speed, it won't overheat (unless it's obstructed by something, e.g. sitting on your bed swallowed by a comforter). It's not the best thing to keep it that toasty for days at a time, but a couple hours at a time shouldn't be a problem.
Second problem: If something in the trash won't delete, just use Secure Empty Trash and it should be fine. Since .torrent files are quite small, it should only take a couple seconds.

    Hi...
    Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts
    Control-F4
Move focus to the active (or next) window
    Shift-Control-F4
Move focus to the previously active window
By the way...  since you are new to Mac, click a clear space on your Desktop. You should see "Finder" top left corner of the screen in the menu bar.
Click Help then click Help Center
As an example type in    keyboard shortcuts
You can use the Help menu for almost any application on your Mac.

  • Have synchronised iPad, iPhone, Windows Laptop and Windows Desktop. iPhone holds 500  Contacts whilst other devices only sync 170 Contacts. I have Shared several Contacts to get them over to iPad, Laptop and Desktop. Contacts then appear twice

Synchronised iPad, iPhone, Windows Laptop and Windows Desktop. iPhone contains 500+ Contacts whilst other three devices only display 170 Contacts. I have Shared several Contacts via Message from iPhone. On creating new Contact from each Message, each Contact appears twice on iPad, Laptop and Desktop via iCloud. Assume that a Setting has locked out the Contacts other than the 170 that do appear as duplications indicate that each Contact already exists on the three devices. Appreciate any advice to see all 500+ Contacts on all devices.

Audiobooks normally only allow one download per purchase; this is also the case with alert tones, ringtones, and some movies. They need to be moved manually; if desired, you can network the computers and use file sharing instead of a thumbdrive.

  • HT204387 connect iphone 5s to windows laptop via bluetooth

I am trying to connect my iPhone 5s to my Windows Laptop via Bluetooth.  The laptop can see the iPHone but cannot connect.  What can I do?

    Hello Rick,
Congratulations on your new iPhone 5s!  To wirelessly sync your iPhone with iTunes, you need to be connected using a Wi-Fi network.  I found an article that has the steps outlined on how to sync your iPhone wirelessly with iTunes:
    Wi-Fi syncing
    Open iTunes
To set up Wi-Fi syncing, connect your iOS device to your computer with the included USB cable. Select your device under Devices on the left-hand side.
In the Summary tab, select "Sync with this [device] over Wi-Fi".
Whenever the computer and the iOS device are on the same network, the iOS device will appear in iTunes, and you can sync it. The iOS device will sync automatically when all of the following are true:
The iOS device is plugged in to power
iTunes is open on the computer
The iOS device and the computer are on the same Wi-Fi network
While the iOS device appears in the left-hand column of iTunes, you can select the content tabs and configure sync options.
Click Apply or Sync to sync the iOS device.
You can find the full article here:

  • Outlook 2010 sticks on "Trying to Connect" when undock Laptops and VPN Connects Automatically

When our users undock their laptops the VPN kicks in automatically.  All of the other network services just continue seamlessly.  Outlook, however, sticks at "trying to connect".  This is often accompanied by a password prompt.
This is easily solved by closing Outlook and reopening it (no need to enter password).
It doesn't seem unreasonable that outlook should require a restart after being disconnected like this.  Just want to establish whether there is a way to have Outlook just re-connect without the need to close it and reopen it.  Or is the need to
    restart it unavoidable?
    Thanks.

This is really a question for the Outlook forum, but from what I have seen over the years, thats just the way it is with OUtlook and MAPI or Outlook Anywhere. When you change the network, Outlook struggles..
Having said that, MAPI over HTTP with Exchange 2013 SP1 is working to eliminate those issues:

The problem is not the router.. the issue is the vpn has put your computer in a different IP range with a different gateway. When you turn off the vpn the computer returns to local lan and can print.
Some vpn software allows you to set gateway to use local net instead of remote gateway or access to other webistes or local lan.
    Read up the issue.

I did not search much.. just grabbed the first article I could find that explains the issue.
The whole point of the vpn is whilst it is connected your computer is NOT part of the Local Lan .. it is part of the Remote LAN via the vpn tunnel.
It is also a security risk using split tunnelling so often it will not be allowed.
Plug the printer directly into the computer via usb or whatever.. Local connection will work.. not local lan.

  • Which format for external hard drive to use with time machine backup and connect to windows laptop?

Hi!  I have an external hard drive on which I have transferred my iTunes library (just mine - not others).  I have also a folder containing just films (some but not all of which are in iTunes too)  Everything has been working just fine until yesterday I noticed that Time Machine was not including the external hard drive in back up as it wasn't formatted.  So I have moved everything back to the Mac hard drive and and ready to format the external hard drive - but understand that if I do the contents cannot be opened from a windows laptop ...  is that right?  Is there are format I could choose that would allow Time Machine to back up and allow Windows to open as well (the idea being that I take the external hard drive with me on holidays etc!!)  Many thanks for any advice.

ok - I understand.  I have managed so far to format the drive (on windows) to exFAT file system - which apparently works with both Windows and Mac - but you're  correct - it will not be included in time machine backup as I have checked the back up files and Samsung is not showing.  Reckon I'm onto having to buy yet another portable hard drive just for windows - or of course buy myself a new mac book!!  Can I ask you please - does the drive have to be clear of everything before I change the format - or can I change it with the files still in there?  Also, got any quick ways duplicating the files onto another External Hard drive (for use on the windows laptop)  At the moment the files are taking 2/3 hours + to copy over!  Thank you!

    Do not worry about it.
Time Machine needs that your external drive is formatted in HFS+, or better known as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". This filesystem is used by Apple on Macs and Windows cannot read or write drives formatted with this filesystem, being this the reason why all your devices do not read the external drive except your Mac.
You can only use your external drive to make Time Machine drives. If you store anything different, you may damage the Time Machine structure, so it is better not to use it as a drive to store other data. Instead, get another external drive to do it or create a second partition on the external drive formatted in FAT32 by using Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html FAT32 can be read by Windows PCs
