FSR or FIS2R mystery board

i've been sold a board described as the MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R, but it is lacking the second set of sata ports, the promise chips, IDE 3 and the firewire ports.  The closest board i could find online appearance wise is the  MSI K8T Neo FSR, but i also seem to be lacking the second 3 audio ports.
The board has printed on it MS6702 Version 1 K8T Neo
I won't mention the supplier since they seem to have a good reputation generally and this may just be a glitch, but i'd like to be able to tell them exactly what it is they have sold me when i return it.
Is there a way of determining exactly what this board is, i'm concerned that drivers and Bios upgrades meant for the FIS2R may not be appropriate, despite it seeming to run fine.
if it is the FSR, what else am i losing out performance wise?
any advice appreciated, cheers.

the company has admitted that they have wrongly advertised the board and i'm still discussing with them how to proceed, to my satisfaction.  Its a UK supplier.
I didn't notice the sound wasn't 5.1 either, until now.
from talking on other forums, alot of others have now realised the 'mistake' has happened to them as well-  it doesn't just seem to be my supplier that has been supplying the wrong board and there seem to be alot of angry returns in the offing.
It was a cheap deal for the board as part of a bundle, so the exact price of the board was obscured somewhat, but advertising an expensive board at cheap prices , and then supplying a different, cheaper board is still unethical , at the very least, if not illegal.  If i had wanted the board i have, i would have bought one advertised as such.
I think the lesson to be learned from this is if it seems to good to be true, it probably is,  get a clear statement of the exact equipment before ordering, and check this closely, not just relying on the invoice or receipt, but physically.
as of my last check they are still calling the board the  FIS2R in the online catalogue, if this doesn't change soon i think i'll have to name the supplier in order to stop others being caught out, and Inform the appropriate authorities regarding the Tranding Standards legislation they are breaking here in the UK.

  • K8T NEO-FSR vs FIS2R

I recently bought a bundle containing the FSR Mobo and I have had probs with the temps being off. On Saturday I saw a FIS2R on a sale price and decided to snap it up. When I received it today I found that the mobo came in a jiffy bag with a rounded FDD cable, HDD cable, D bracket and other bits but no box. The manual is exactly the same as for my FSR boaard so that doesnt help and the number on the board is MS-6702 Ver: 1.0.
Can anyone tell me what number is on their FIS2R board and if there are any visual differences between the two boards ?
I need to know this info rather quick so I can RMA the board and either get my money back or get what I asked for in the first place.

    Hi,
The only difference I can discover is that the fis2r board supports firewire.
edit: o yes ofcourse the promise raid controller.
For the rest the boards look the same. See the MSI website for more diferences.

  • K8T800 FSR vs FIS2R

Hey, I see online that the FSR is "new" and is about $20 (or more) cheaper than the FIS2R.  What's the difference (I'm recommending this mobo to a friend)?
From what I can tell on MSI's site, it is that there is no PATA raid solution on the FSR?  Is that it?
    Thanks,

  • IBook G4 14" - Mystery Board Piece

I'm fairly sure that my wife's 14" iBook G4 has a faulty DC-in board, so I opened it up just to double check. A piece came out when I opened the shell, labeled "10.000 ||| 4E".

    http://riverhillfootball.com/ibookG4/ibook_board2.jpg
    http://riverhillfootball.com/ibookG4/ibook_board3.jpg
Should I attempt to reattach this piece?

    Hey dlineman,
Well at first I had no clue but there are a lot of them ("y" designation)on this G4 board in my "broken" stock.
I'm looking at all of them under magnification they read: 24.576, 32.768, 10.000, 30.000 so that reminded me of crystal frequencies, probably MHz.
Then I googled KDS Taiwan and got:
    http://www.kds.info/html/companyinfo/history/indexen.htm
Daishinku Corp. and they make crystals.
So the answer to your question is yes.
That's an extremely precise crystal oscillating at 10.000 MHz and anything that gets in there would be very bad. I would use a very, very, very thin bead of epoxy around the perimeter of that cap. Make absolutely sure none gets inside and touches that plate or you'd kill that component and probably the iBook. The upside is that if it does go bad it would be relatively easy to replace if you can find the part.

  • 865PE Neo2-FIS2R, memory question!

    Hi!
I´m thinking of buying memory for the 865PE Neo2-FIS2R mother board and have a few doubts that are on my mind.
    1. If I want to use DualMode memory, should I use 256+256 or 512+512.
Lets assume that I buy 2x 256MB and uses them as DualMode.
Can I later put another 2 x 256MB into the computer and use them all as DualMode, (256+256+256+256) or is only possible to use 2 of each size.
Maybee I should buy 1x of 512MB and use it as SingeMode and later complement with another 512 and use them as DualMode.
    hmmmmm.......any point of views?
The memory I´m talking about is:
     Corsair CMX256A-3500C2 256Mb DDR PC3500 CAS2 434MHz
     Corsair CMX512-3500C2  512Mb DDR PC3500 CAS2 434MHz
I assume that they are the same as MSI has in its
"DDR400 Memory Modules Qualified Vender List " and should work just fine with the motherboard.

    WiGGoW

I would not go with that brand of ram. There are alot of issues being talked about involving that ram in this forum. I recommend Kingston and so does MSI. Keep in mind to obtain Ultr-Turbo in Bios you need to buy a latency of 2 or you will get an error message and your bios will reset to slow.

  • FIS2R Boot problem

Hi just got a Neo Fis2r board and installed it into my new PC.
The Fans all start up and it starts to tick over but the screen wont turn on and i get this error on the D-Bracket that reads:

It's says that its the Init Keyboard Controller.
I've checked everything is plugged in and tested my keybord on another machine and it works fine on it, but on my new system it just hangs and wont do anything.
Have i installed something wrong or is there a problem with my board.
Has Anybody else had this happen...

  • MSI K8T8 Neo FSR/FS2R??????

What is the difference off the  MSI K8T8 NEO FSR besides the MSI K8T8 NEO FS2R????
    please help!!

The 2 models listed by MSI are FSR and FIS2R.
If MSI says "FSR" then I'm sure it's got RAID.
The only logical differences are that FIS2R will have 2 RAID controllers (VIA + Promise - FSR will only have VIA) and Firewire (the "I").
As to which one is "better" the answer has to be neither. They have different spec therefore the one which is better is the one which has what you want. If you don't  need 2 RAID controllers & IEEE1394 then FSR is better. If you need Firewire then FSR is no good for you.
    Edit: Here you go.

  • NEO-FIS2R not powering up - new twist though

OK, so my NEO-FIS2R will not power up when I hit the power switch.  I have changed the battery, and did the clear bios jumper thing.  Here's the twist, if I re-wire the case so that the reset button is connected to the power switch pins on the mother board..I can boot up fine and the system runs like a dream.  Its only when I try to wire the correct power switch to the board that I have issues.  Now I've tried two brand new cases (Thermaltake Damier V6000 and Altec P160) and they both have the same problem.  Any thoughts on why the board can boot from a reset button and not the power switch?

Bummer-- I missed the second to the last sentence of your original post.
If you have a DVM (Fluke or otherwise), and fine enough probe tips (or wire), disconnect start switch wiring from mobo and checkout the resistance from inside one connector pin to the other (of the start switch) as you hit the start switch.  Should be infinate until you press the switch, at which point resistance should drop to well under an ohm.  try it on the reset switch also as a point of reference.
    (but on two cases???).
Keep us posted, I'll keep thinking.

  • Tweekin Neo FIS2R

I am trying to find out the best way to tweek my new 875 Neo FIS2R :D  Board for best performance. ( through Bios and/or Windows XP HE ) Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do?? Any info will be helpfully!!
Below is what I currently have:

You should be a little faster than rambus.  Even with DDR 400 it will only run at DDR 333 unless you have 800 FSB CPU.  533 FSB CPU has a bandwidth of 4.2GB/SEC.  Single Channel DDR 333 has a band width of 2.7GB/SEC.  Dual channel DDR 333 memory has a band width of 5.4GB/Sec.  As long as memory has at least the band width of CPU FSB more bandwidth will not improve performance.  The fact that you increased the amount of ram from 512MB to 1GB does not effect the benchmark because it does not use that much ram in its tests.

I have a MSI 875P Neo FIS2R m/board... and sometimes it pauses on turn on and displays on the d-bracket... "boot attempt"...?
Now im guessing that it is due to a faulting drive... but the only thing is, is that when i push the reset button or restart it ... it starts normally....

I had the exact same problem after I updated my mobo to BIOS 1.9, and it seemed like it got worse after I updated to BIOS 2.0.  It seemed like 1 out of every 3 or 4 times, my computer wouldn't cold boot, but after I would press the reset switch, it would boot just fine.
I solved all my problems by flashing back to BIOS 1.7 because it was the last BIOS that gave me no trouble.  Since then I've had no problems booting at all.  Plus, now I can set my RAM timings manually without causing PAT to be disabled, which is something I couldn't do with versions 1.9 or 2.0.

  • MSI P4 Neo-FIS2R Problem.... SATA

Hi all... please help... i have just bought a Intel 875P Neo-FIS2R m'board and the SATA dive works and its fast but during boot a txt screen appears saying there is no BIOS for SATA Promise... what is all this about? Also the drive is quick but no where near the speed the figures show on the test beds!
Im getting 1150 in PCmark2002 where they where getting 1450 on the net... is this just because i have not configured it properly???... please help...!

You connected the drive to the intel S.ATA port (which is good) so the Promise ports are inactive.
Disable the Promise controller in the bios untill you need it.

  • NVidia drivers cause system instability

    Hello,
I recently purchased an MSI 865 Neo2 FIS2R mother board.  Here is how
    I have it configured:
    o Power Supply - FSP400-60PFN 400W (3.3V/28A, 5V/40A, 12V/15A, 5VSB/2A,
    -5V/0.3A, -12V, 0.8A)
    o Processor - 2.8GHz P4
    o RAM - 2 512MB PC3200 Kingston HyperX CL2
    o RAID 0 - 2 Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus SATA drives.
    o Video - Aopen GF3Ti500
o Primary IDE Master - TDK Indi DVD 440N
o Secondary IDE Slave - 56X CDROM Drive
    o Floppy Drive
I installed Windows XP on the RAID without incident.  When I tried to
install the NVidia display drivers (45.23), the system became
unstable.  Specifically here is what I noticed:
o The black Windows start-up screen with the blue progress bar would
flicker between black & blue around the same spot each time.
o From the login screen, when I chose my account, it would
briefly show my desktop and then I would hear the relays in my monitor
click, the screen go black, a second click and my screen would be fine
    again.
o If I used the display properties control panel and chose the
advanced option, again, click, blackness, click, everything's OK.
o I noticed that when I tried to use Window's Media player to play a
CD, it would crash during the 2nd song.  It would crash sooner and
sooner each time I restarted it until it was crashing as soon as I
started it (assuming I didn't reboot).  After than IE would crash,
Windows Explorer might crash or the system might spontaneously reboot.
o After rebooting, the system would be less stable, with IE or Windows
explorer crashing sooner than before (without even using Media Player).
This would continue to get worse (across re-boots) until it would
start crashing while loading Windows XP.
MAT and DOT are in the default setting and I have not tried adjusting
    any voltages, etc.
If I booted in safe mode and uninstalled the display driver, everything
would return to normal and the system would run fine.  I checked the
IRQs to make sure that wasn't a problem.  I noticed a device from the
Intel Chipset and the VGA card were both sharing IRQ 16.  I don't know
much about this (including how to change an IRQ) so I tried disabling
the Intel device (it dealt with the USB and I have no USB devices
currently attached).  The system didn't seem to mind having that device
disabled.  I reinstalled the display drivers, but the system behaved
    exactly the same.
I also tried stepping down to the 44.03 version of the drivers but
they actually made the system worse (my screen split in half and
    things turned purple!).
I also tried swapping between the GF3Ti500 and a GeForce4 MMX 440 The
only difference is that while starting windows, the monitor would
briefly go black instead of flickering between black and blue.  Both
cards run fine in my old machine, an MSI NForce mobo, using the
    45.23 drivers.
Since the problems usually started when I was using Media Player, I
tried disabling the sound device.  The system seemed to run fine (with
the exception of the monitor clicking).  I could play movies with the
media player, browse with IE, etc. with no crashes.  I couldn't find
any resources conflicts between the sound and the vga card.
Windows trouble shooter suggested updating the mobo BIOS.  I was
previously running 1.3. I tried updating to 1.7.  The reflash seemed
to go fine.  But when I rebooted, all I got was a black screen (no
beep).  I looked at the D-Bracket and noticed that it was stuck on the
RTC test.  I don't think that's the problem.  The next step is
initialization of the video system.  I tried the emergency recovery
procedure (with the 1.7 BIOS).  It worked, but still the screen
remained black, stuck on the same test.
How do I get (either) video card to work?  And should I just leave the
system flashed to 1.7, or try to use the emergency recovery program to
    get back to 1.3?
    Thanks in advance!

Hey Guys.  Thanks for the help.  I don't doubt that the NVidia drivers are fine, they're just part of the puzzle.  Just to be sure, I got a new PSU.  Here are it's specs:
    +5V/40A, +12V/24A, +3.3V/32A, -5V/-0.5A, -12V/1.0A, +5V SB/2A, max load 530W.
As I mentioned earlier, I had tried updating the BIOS to 1.7, after which it sticks on the RTC test (see my original post for details).  After installing the new PSU, it still stuck on the RTC test.  I tried reflashing to 1.3, but now the memory test is failing.  Does that seem right?  The RTC test is after the memory test, so why should reflashing to 1.3 cause a memory failure?  I'm assuming the reflash didn't work correctly.  If I can get it to work (fingers crossed) I'll let you know what happens.

  • N00B here, looking for MAT/PAT answers and BIOS advice...

I just built my machine from uugotz last night using the FIS2R board, a 2.6C, the Zalman 7000, and some Knight Rider lookin sticks from Corsair (2 x 512MB XMS Pro 3200LL Twinx).
    Pic for the curious:  http://www.rememberphil.com/zig/northbridge.jpg
I immediately upgraded to 1.9, and set my RAM timings to SPD.  I can get 2/3/2/6 just like Corsair's specs say, but only after upping the Vdimm to 2.7, which from what I've read on the forums here is SOP, so that's cool...
    Here's what I can't figure out:
    1.  I can't up the performance mode beyond Fast without getting hit with the "timings too tight" message, even if I intentionally lower the .  What gives?
    2.  Is MAT just the MSI implementation of PAT for copyright's sake, or is it something different?
    3. I know what PAT is, but what exactly does the different "Performance Levels" do anyway?
    4. What BIOS do you guys recommend?  1.8? 1.9? 1.9beta?
    Thanks,

    HELP!
I just ordered my first custom system that includeds a MSI 865PE Neo2 FIS2R mother board, P4 3.2 Ghz processor and Corsair TwinX 1024 3200LL memory.
I agonized over the memory selection and only settled on the above after reading numerous glowing reviews such as below from http://techreport.com/ja.zz?comments=5264
"I should share something with you about Corsair RAM that we learned this past week and confirmed in spades—Geoff, Andy, and I all three—over the weekend in our various testing endeavors. I mentioned in my 875P and 865 chipset reviews that I'd had some trouble getting Corsair's XMS3200LL memory working with its default timings on these new Intel chipsets, so I wrote Corsair to see what was up. Here's the answer I got from Robert Pearce, Corsair's Applications Specialist:
The problem is the chipset won't handle a tRCD (RAS to CAS Delay) of 2. We've done a revision of the SPD to make the LL's work on the 875 and 865 chipsets, the settings are now 2-3-2-6 by default.
We will, of course, warranty any modules with the older SPD but it should be noted that the end user can simply manually adjust the BIOS to the settings noted above.
Sure enough, using the latest BIOS revisions for the various 865 and 875 boards we have running around here, we were all able to get XMS3200LL (or in my case, plain ol' XMS3200 v1.1) DIMMs working with very aggressive timings, up to and including 2-3-2-6 at 400MHz, so long as the RAS to CAS delay was set to 3. Conversely, even with very relaxed timings for the other settings, the systems weren't happy with the RAS to CAS delay at 2.
This is a minor snag for Corsair, I suppose, but the manual workaround works beautifully, and the RAM is still easily superior to the other DDR400 samples I've encountered. "
    And from - http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.html?i=1828&p=2
After countless hours of testing there is no doubt that Corsair LL (Low Latency) PC3200 modules are the fastest and most compatible DDR memory modules to pair with your 865PE or 875P motherboard (regular CAS2.0 Corsair modules are just as good as LL/TwinX modules). Initially we had the most problems with Corsair's modules, but thankfully motherboard manufacturers were able to come through with solid BIOS releases that remedied all of these issues.
So the question is ... has this problem been fixed or are these review full of baloney? I have never overclocked, but the features that come with the MSI board would allow me to do so as a Noob. Have I wasted $300.00? Should I call the reseller and tell them to STOP and put a different type of memory in my system?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Might be a daft question but whats the difference between K8T Neo-FIS2R and K8T Neo-FSR????

I though the SAME thing But was told Otherwise by a Mod. Because with the PENTIUM Based Boards "2" Does Mean Two Different Types of RAID Not JUST the Difference in the Southbridge and the Onboard Controller, Because the (2) in the i875PE-FIS2R means that Both the ICH5-R and And the Promise Controller support BOTH S-ATA RAID, and P-ATA IDE RAID, as there is a P-ATA IDE Controller on The Onboard Promise Chip also, as it is IDE-3 .....So I Imagine we are BOTH Correct, But this WILL Teach me to Open my Mouth in the AMD Side of the Forum ...Just Kidding......Sean
