FTP Bandwidth question

I have a disagreement with a co-worker. I feel if I'm connected to an FTP site but not up or downloading I'm using minimal bandwidth. He is convinced that just being connected is using loads of bandwidth. That makes little sense to me but I'd like an expert opinion.
If I'm looking for a file on an ftp server that will be there some time in the next 2 hours I see no reason to not be connected and refresh periodically to look for a file rather than logout and login.
alan

Hi alan ruta-
I do know that it will tie up the connection until you either release it or the server kicks you off. If the server is only allowed to make, say, 10 connections and you and nine other people are logged in and doing nothing it would be a problem for that 11th person.
There is a small amount of handshake data sent periodically but I believe it is a negligible amount compared to an actual file transfer.

  • Ftp setup question

sorry if this a repeat question, but i'm stumped. i've set up
a number of sites previously, and never had a problem using the ftp
with dw. my typical setup has been
    ftp host: ftp.mysite.com
    host directory: public_html/
    username
    password
    never a problem.
now i'm trying to set up a site on a new dedicated server
host and these same setting don't work. as an aside, i'm using
cpanel and when i set up the ftp user i noticed the directory is
/home/wwwcoun/public_html/, so i alternated this with a simple
public_html/ but it didn't work. suggestions please. thanks.

    Try -
    FTP Host - www.mysite.com
    Host directory - BLANK
Can you connect? If you can, tell me what FOLDER names you
    see on the
    remote folder list.

  • Bandwidth Question

I wanted to ask a question which has been playing on my mind for a while now. Thought this is the best place to ask.
I am currently on ADSL+2 and i get around 17mbps-19mbps live 650meters from the exchange line lenth 19db.
Now my exchange is going to be live for Infinity soon, im not planning on switching just yet as i pay a heavly discounted price on my broadband package and if i want to upgrade i will have to pay full price = £15 extra a month.
It got me wondering that if BT ADSL customers start switching to Infinity, will it mean less congestion on the ADSL network? like will it benefit me? or are both BT's FTTC and ADSL bandwith combined? Its hard to explain but im sure most of you understand what i mean
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    @Eamdad
They use different backhaul through BT Wholesales network but the same links into BT retail, so in theory you are correct assuming BT retail have enough bandwidth on their interconnect links.. However i agree with john46.. the number of people switching probably won't make a lot of difference

  • FTP Flash Question

    Aloha,
I am a teacher and would like to  put the simple Flash video games for my little 1st graders on our HTML5 website.  I have uploaded the following files thru filezilla
    1.  swfobject.js
    2. teahousefla.html
    3.  teahouselfa.swf
When I go to the site it is simply showing the "ugly website" and not the flash game.  Do I need to FTP the .fla?
Thank you very much for helping me with this newbie question!  Smiles, Victoria

    No to the iPhone question.
Flash built the swfobject.js, the html, and the .swf files.  Do I need to do something special inside Dreamweaver?  I simply saved the files Flash built and that is what I tried to FTP.  The name of the website is morpheusflash.com
Thank you very much for helping!  Very much appreciated!

  • Ftp page question

Question from a relative newbie: On iWeb, you can set up an
ftp page for guests where any file put into your public_html folder
automatically gets listed on the ftp page. You don't have to set up
a link. Just upload any file into your public_html folder and it
shows up on a separate ftp page. How does Apple do this?
    Thanks!

  • General mail bandwidth question...

We are using a software spam solution on a separate server that filters the incoming mail by domain, then sends it on to OSX Server mail. We only have about 100 users.
We have what we consider to be a fairly good connection to the internet, 10MB x 2MB, yet it seems like the processing and handling of email is using a lot of our bandwidth.
We think it is because of the large amount of spam we are handling. We are averaging about 55,000 messages per day incoming, 75% of which is quarantined as spam, the rest being delivered to the users. That comes out to about 130+ emails per account per day that are potentially spam.
We will be ordering a new spam appliance shortly that will bring the catch percentage into the 99% range, but here is the question:
We obviously must accept the incoming mail to process it for spam, thereby utilizing bandwidth. Are there methods we can use to detect and stop the flood of spam, maybe at a TCP level before it takes up bandwidth?
The spam has just gotten ridiculous. It is up 8 times from a year ago. Looking for thoughts or directions to look into.

It only gets worse. Over 92% of the traffic to our machine (130 domains, 1000+ users) is spam. About 80% of that gets nailed at the RBLs, half of the rest by our filters, and the rest end up in user boxes to be postprocessed by SpamSieve (or whatever Qurb became for our Windows users). Apparently it is still against the law to exterminate spammers, and there seems to be a large percentage of the breeding population who still purchase their promotions, or can't secure their Windows botboxes, so through the magic of compassionate capitalism and certain lame OSen, spam is not going to die anytime soon.
You could offload your processing by using the likes of Postini or other services, or the spam appliance you mentioned. Beyond that, or my very tongue-in-cheek suggestion of vigilantism, there is no cure.

  • M.2 Compatibilityand Bandwidth Question

    Hello all,
I am going to be building my first PC  and am trying to get all of my information straight before i buy everything. I am looking to get:
    Intel i7 5930K
MSI X99 Gaming 9 AC mobo
    512 GB Samsung xp941 SSD
    gigabyte gtx 980 g1 gaming (x2)
I have tried searching low and high through the internet, forums, and manual but cannot come up with a 100% sure answer.
So my question is if i have the xp941 in an adapter in a PCIe slot, being that it is PCIe gen 2 and x4, will that affect the bandwidth of my two graphics cards running at gen3 x16 each? I am not sure if putting a gen 2 in a gen3 slot downgrades all of the slots to the lowest generation or even lower lanes. And if i am using a M.2 PCIe adapter card (only using the adapter for the heat sink) will i still be able to boot from the SSD?
Also, looking at the compatibility list for this board, it shows the xp941 but only in the 256 GB size. Will the 512 GB version still be compatible?
Thank you all so much for your help in advance

First of all using a gen2 card does not affect cards in other slots. Gen3 cards in gen3 slots will stay at gen3. However there are population rules that will switch available lanes depending on the slots populated and the cpu used (5820K: 28 lanes / 5930K and above: 40 lanes). To keep both card in x16 mode and using the M.2 adapter card you need to follow the population rules for 3-way SLI. The vgas need to be used in PCI_E1 and PCI_E4 while the M.2 card needs to be used in PCI_E5. Of course it would make more sense to use the M.2 SSD in the onboard M.2 slot and don't use an adapter card at all. With your 40 lane cpu you could still use vgas in PCI_E1 and 4 while using the SSD in the M.2 slot with full bandwith.

    Usually yes.

There should be no problem as the capacity should be pretty irrelevant if the SSD type is compatible. MSi can't test all drives and other stuff available so a component not mentioned in the list is not automatically considered incompatible but in most cases simply not tested. For a confirmation - if wanted - you need to contact MSI directly: >>How to contact MSI.<<

  • 5508 - 3502 AP bandwidth Question

    OK,
    Here is the quick rundaown...
Our public wifi circut (verizon wireless) was upgraded from 25M to 150M due to over 500 devices connected and fighting for bandwidth.
I noticed when runnung tests that when associated to th 3502 AP's Im getting around 9.7Mb down. On ANY of the 3502's
When I move to a 3602 and associate to it, I get roughly 35Mb.
Im asking if anyone knows if there is a bandwidth limitation on 3502? Is there a setting on the WLC or the AP itself?
    Thanks

ok, so you are using Bronze, do you have LAN side QoS in place?
What type of port are the AP connected to? 100M 1G etc
How many ports do you have connected from teh 5508 to the switch?  LAG or individually connected?

  • E3000 FTP access question/using Cisco connect after router setup

I have two questions about my E3000 router.
    1. If I have already set up my router using the default web address, if I use the Cisco connect software, do I gain any benefit or am I opening up a can of worms? I would like to change my server name and default admin user name stuff, but I don't want to screw with any settings I have. I will be updating my firmware in a day or so, so should I use the software then, or just go about it the way I have already?
    2. I have enables FTP access for my USB drive, but I am unsure how to access it from a remote computer. I know using ftp://xxx.xxx.x.x gets me to my Index while connected to my network, but how do I access this off my network? I want to give our parents and family access to pictures, but I''m not sure of the exact address to use. I have looked in the set-up manual, and searched Google and this site, and have found nothing.
Thank you in advance for your help!
    Dan

If you have configured your Router using the Cisco Connect software, then you it secure your wireless network with an password. If you have any firewall and antivurs software on your router then it will protect your computers against worms.
To use the FTP feature of your router you need to enable ftp login on your router, which you will find under the storage tab of your router.

  • Ftp put question

I am trying to do a put using:
    put /Users/jeffrrey/Pictures/test.pjpg
But I get back no such file or directory.
I can overcome this by doing an lcd /Users/jeffrrey/Pictures/

  • FTP Client question

I would like to have my business website (built using iWeb) hosted with another service other than .Mac. I have registered my domain name with GoDaddy and am looking at GoDaddy to host my website. I understand I need an FTP Client and GoDaddy directed me to Fetch for Mac. Also, if I purchase GoDaddy's web hosting service, I have to choose between Windows shared hosting and Linux shared hosting. I'm assuming I need the Linux shared hosting.
Can somebody tell me whether I am making the right choice to:
    1) Host my site at GoDaddy
    2) Purchase Fetch FTP Client
    3) Choose Linux shared hosting
    Thanks for your help,
    Randy

    godaddy has a good rep.
fetch works fine. many like cyberduck or transmit
    linux is the choice

  • FTP newbie question

    Hello,
I want to set up FTP service on my Mac so my brother can connect and download files.
What's the best way to set this up in order to give him access only to one folder on my user account?
I'm new to this so be gentle ...
    Christer

    Ok first things first ;
The mac does include a sftp server that is wrapped around ssh.
First you have to enable remote login service on your machine , create a new user for your brother on your local machine that will allow him to access to your machine and log in to your machine.
you can deposit the items you want to share into his account given you have adminstrative rights to your machine. or you can make an alias of your shared files to his account as a symbolic link.
your Shared folder in your home folder shall look like this when listed in Terminal.
    ls -Cauil
node POSIX perm. # owner group creation date name
    58715 drwxr-xr-x 6 yourname admin 204B Aug 9 00:00 Shared/
if the directory does not exist you can use mkdir to create Shared in your home directory
To link your /Shared to his you will have to use ln
    ln -s /Users/bertrand/Shared /Users/brother/Shared
when you List your brothers directory you shall see the following.
    ls /Users/brother/
Node POSIX.perm # Owner group size Creation Date Link
    1609826 lrwxr-xr-x 1 yourname brother 22B Jan 27 05:04 Shared@ -> /Users/yourname/Shared
your brother shall now have access to your shared folder via SFTP which will be way more secure and convinient than normal FTP that will play **** with firewalls nat etc...
If your brother is one your local network you can give him access via SFTP from your private address on your local network.. on the otherhand if you are remorting from one to the other you will have to use NAT to your Wan ip to your local IP . If you are both remoting and on fixed Ip's i would recommand a nice little Firewall utility called flying buttress and you can configure your brothers ip address with a nice allow traffic from him blocking out every unwanted adress to talk to you on port 22 .
If you are on dynamic IP and he is on fixed Flying buttress will still apply but you will have to precise him your new WAN address each time he might want to connect.
if you are both on dynamic IP you cannot setup easily the firewall to block out unwanted guests adressing you on port 22. You can surely turn remote login off while you are not sharing file .
As to AFP there is a nice little utlity named share points you can find here
    http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/
    AFP runs on port 548.

  • FTP basic questions

I have read the FTP is not really working at the moment, but to be honest I do not know much about web design. What is FTP supposed to do? and in theory is Iweb 09 "trying" to allow the user to make more then one site?
I made 2 web pages using a family pack (and I can't even get the family pack "multiple site" to work on 1 computer. Even when I log in as another member my previous web page is there and I fear erasing it (one of the main reasons I got it). Can someone explain what FTP is supposed to do? I get my .com's at Godaddy and just buy the .com, nothing more. I was trying to figure it out last night but I guess I don't have FTP use with my .coms (I only purchased basic names, nothing special). At the moment I have two pages up, but wont more, not unlike anyone else here.
So before I start messing with too much can someone give me a simple explanation on how FTP "should" work with Iweb 09 and Godaddy? I tried to google it but no real help, and with Iweb 09 being so new using goggle to find help is pretty much pointless.
    Thanks,
    Brent

    Brent...
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It's a transfer system for getting files from one place to another on the net securely.
Apple is adding the FTP functionality to iWeb so people (like me) who publish to another server other than mobileme can publish their sites directly out of iWeb, instead of the old way. (Publish to a folder, upload with another program)
If you have FTP access to your sites at Godaddy, then you click on the name of your site in the left side of the iWeb window, at the top where it says "publish to:" select FTP, then fill in all of the pertinent info and click "Publish Site" at the bottom of the page.
In theory, this is how it's supposed to work. If it doesn't, and if Apple truely doesn't have the kinks worked out yet, then "Publish to a Folder" and upload to Godaddy the same way you did before.
    Hope this helps.

  • CS5 FTP Log Question

In previous versions of DW ftp information was appended to the log.  You could got through the day uploading and downloading and the information would all be there in a long log file at the end of the day or until you closed DW.  In CS5 it seems that each interaction with the server overwrites the log rather than appending to it.  I have tried unsuccessfully to find a setting to change this.  I need the ftp information to append not overwrite.  Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Unfortunately, built-in SSIS FTP component doesn't provide that flexibility.
You may explore an SSIS scripting (VB or C#) based on FtpWebRequest classes.

  • Tiger - Finder 'Connect to Server'  ftp protocol question

    Folks;
I recognize that the Finder's ftp access is read/download only.
I want to understand why I cannot get a file listing with this type of connection.
I authenticate correctly and a blank Finder window opens.
If I use the cmd-line I have to burp the file listing out as shown below.
Is there a way go get the Finder to request this listing with a standard ftp:// request?
Seems like after all these years the Finder wouldn't be so brain dead...

I don't know what "extended passive mode" is. It sounds like the Finder doesn't support it.
Actually, I think Apple is doing everyone a favor with FTP. FTP has no security whatsoever. FTP passwords are often login passwords. Using sftp is far more secure and more reliable. With MacFUSE and MacFusion, sftp can be integrated with the Finder.
