FTP Built in?

Hi everyone,
Does OSX have a built in FTP client? (new to macs)
I have a website that is beyond what i can do with Iweb(i think) meaning it has lots of pages. and iweb only publishes to .mac?
Ultimately I am looking for a replacement for Dreamweaver MX that was given to me a looong time ago. I hand code most everything but I like site wide find and replace and the file upload / synchro stuff.
thx..ron

OS X does have its own FTP client (and server.) However, the basic client is download-only. Unless you want to become familiar with the Unix command line there is no "easy" upload unless you use third-party software. Fortunately, there are loads of excellent FTP clients around. You will find them at www.versiontracker.com and www.macupdate.com. If you are looking for freeware I can recommend RBrowser Lite. If you don't mind paying a shareware fee there are several great competitors: RBrowser, Captain FTP, Transmit, Fetch, just to mention a few.
There are also competitors to iWeb that are not restricted to .Mac: RapidWeaver and SandVox.
Then there are a couple of freeware WYSIWYG editors - NVU and Amaya.

  • Upload file to SharePoint via FTP

    Hi,
Is it possible to setup an FTP to access or upload file to SharePoint?
We're using SharePoint Foundation 2010 as repository of files and one of the requirement is to upload files using FTP.
I tried to mapped the document library to the server and created an FTP site and point to that drive but no luck to connect to the FTP using client FTP tool (FileZilla).
    Thanks

SharePoint does not use FTP, does not have FTP built into it, and does not listen for FTP requests.
You can use WebDAV for file uploads, or other programmatic means to upload files.

  • FTP Client - recommendation

I can get to my web-site via parallels and IE but would prefer direct via the Mac. I do nothing more complex than upload a file or series of family pictures so I just want something simple and relaible. Can anyone recommend a straightforward client please? Thanks

Hi, Yummy FTP is a good, though not free program. OS X also has ftp built in straight from the shell. All you really need to do is open a terminal and you can ftp right from there.

  • Newbie here, sorry but gotta start somewhere

    I created a video file that's 5 mins @ 173 mbs which resides
    on my HD.
Right. Okay, instead of sending it through e-mail as an
    attachment (it's
way too big anyway) I want to post it, I believe this is
    called FTP - not sure.
After posting, I want to create a link that I could send to
    whomever through e-mail.
I own Dreamweaver, Go LIve! and have a web-site. Yes, I do
have a web-site but I created the site's layout with the hosting
company's "site creator" program which allows lazy people to make
basic web-pages. So, that's why I'm asking for your help.
Thanks and any advice will be appreciated.

    Hi Man
Your first post about the FTP url is a way to go, alright,
but not all hosts allow this mode of transfer as it is not as
secure as others. But if you are goign by way of a new build in DW
as you say, then you have your FTP built-in.
    Ok so point by point:
    1. - You can imsert your image a few ways. if you want to
layer your other item on top of it your easiet way out is to set
your page margins to 0 (Page properties on the properties
inspector), and insert either a table (pretty basic stuff) or a DIV
(more advanced but ultimately more powerful). You can then set the
image as the backgroudn to this and continue building on top. There
are other ways, but try that first and see how you like it. As you
stadard sizes.... You should search this forum for posts regarding
viewport size/screen resolution. Its probably the hottest
long-standing debate there is. In short there is no such thing. But
i will say thgis and get hammwered by som eof the others for it. If
you are a beginner, giving your page a fixed width is the easiesty
way to go. And the most common resolution is 1024x768. Some use
lower, plenty use higher, but that is the most common. Fact. SO if
you want to design for a set size, design for that. It means width
wise you want to go to around 980 and height approx 650 . Again,
play around and see works for you. Many things can play around with
the viewable area of the screen - the taskbar size and position,
the vewiport size (maximized or not), but eventually you have to
say "Scr** it!" and go for SOMETHING. When you have more experience
under your belt yuou can start worrying about luquid sized sized
that change with the screen size. For now stick with the above, but
as i said, play around with it. You need SOME graphics program, but
only use them to makie and size the image, then insert it into
dreamweaver as is, dont let Fireworks or any other graphics
application create you html for you- its a disaster from the
    get-go.
    2. - Create the words on the image itself in the graphics
program, and then use whats calle Image Maps in DW to make them
links. This means an area of a page you select (the area over the
word) and this becomes your link, so it looks as though its the
word itself when in fact its a square or circle sitting on top of
the right part of the image.
You know, as i think of it - if you insert the image as a
background as i said just now, you cant use image maps, so perhaps
insert it into a 1x1 table, then insert your second table into THAT
one to hold any other elements you want. Again, you might be better
with DIVS; look into them and see if you think they are somerhing
you can come to grips with yet because for what you are proposing
    they make more sense.
    3. Not sure what you mean here....can you clarify?
Lastly linking pages - Select the item to be the link,
(hotspot, image or text) and in the Properties Inspector, in the
Link box type the name of the page to link you want to link to, or
better yet hit the Browse button (the folder icon) and find the
file that way. Thats it, you've made your link. You can link to
pages, images, videos, whatever you want (though pages are
    obviously the most common).
    Best of luck. Post back.

  • Updates to website after domain name change

Can I still update my website using iweb after I transition to a new domain name?

I use third party hosting to mean a company other than Apple's .Mac. I also use godaddy to host my sites and it is very simple. They will provide an address of the ftp site name for your domain. I publish from iWeb to a folder, then use Cyberduck (any FTP program will do) to upload. You don't even need the ftp program because godaddy has their own simple ftp built in to the service. They also have excellent and free technical service. You can look at my site at: http://bandb.holage.com.

  • DW Manage Site feature keeps crashing

    Hi,
Am having all sorts of issues with Dreamweaver 8's Manage
Site feature at the moment. It keeps crashing the entire program
me. I am running DW on a PC and OS is XP Pro (reformatted/ rebuilt
in Nov 06) <-- DW8 has been running fine till today.
Have uninstalled and re-installed DW8. Have repaired the
program through the control panel --> Add/ Remove Programs.
I usually upload and download sites through DW's FTP built in
functionality. Till then I guess I'll have to use a 3rd party FTP
client. Still I want this Manage Site feature up and working again,
specially so I can check in and out with fellow developers.
    Can anyone advise please?
    Thanks,

  • Creating webpage with video

ive not really had any experience with creating web pages or using my webspace before and just used iweb to creat a simple page with just a title and a QT movie (saved as a 10minute iphone m4v file) to show to a few friends but nothing more...
I then used cyberduck to upload it...
BUT then what? How do i know what the web address is to tell people to go to? I think I found it but just by guess work.. is it listed somewhere on iweb or on cyberduck? Also, when I now look at the video, it takes a long time to load but seems to work okay eventaully on safari.... but just brings up the 'rainbow wheel' on firefox and then i eventually have to force quit!
Can anyone help me make it load quicker and stop crashing?? I'm assuming I need to upload a smaller file but am not sure how to save it to make it smaller yet not noticably worse quality!
    help!

Well, where are you uploading it to? What's the domain name that you linked to your web space? For example, http://yourdomainname.com. That's something that you would have had to register - iWeb doesn't do anything like that for you.
Iincidentally, iWeb comes with FTP built in, so you really don't need Cyberduck at all to publish the site. In iWeb, click on the "Site" button on the top left of your page list to get to the Publishing settings.
"Publish to" will be set to "MobileMe" if you use Apple's hosting service. It should be set to "FTP" if you have hosting elsewhere (eg, Godaddy or Network Solutions), and then you would fill in your FTP server settings. Your hosting company can tell you what they are.
    Hope that helps

  • Publish site NOT using MobilMe

    Hello,
I am working on a site in iWeb for a school project. My teacher wants to se the process of the creation and I want to upload it manually on the Internet. Is this possible? Because of now when I press "Publish site" I get some stupid message up saying I have to pay etc...

Depending on the version you use, publish to a folder and use an ftp app to upload to your webserver.
In iWeb 08 it's in the File menu.
Or use iWeb 09 ftp built-in to do so.
    Click the Sitename.
And browse this forum. It's discussed every day. You can also look to the right to see more of this.

  • How to set Lion built-in FTP Server auto run off

    Hello all.
I set FTP Server by using Rumpus Server application.
But Lion's built-in FTP Server is running on the front.
So if I try to connect my FTP Server out of my LAN, I can only connect to the built-in FTP Server despite I wanted to connect Rumpus FTP Server.
It can be solved by unload the built-in FTP Server(using sudo -s launchctl unload...) but every after rebooting I should set it because it is set to run automatically in every booting.
How can I set the auto run off?

well, the ftp server (=ftpd) takes account info from the user list for your mac. so, go to the system settings on your mac, then to users, and then just add another user with a password of your choice (tap on the little plus-sign to add a user!). this will then be a valid user for your ftp server after you restart your ftp server.
the other thing you want to do, about the home directory, is called chroot. you can set the home directory of a specific ftp-user to be another directory then the standard. for this, there are configuration directives in the configuration file in /private/etc/ftpd.conf which you have to edit by hand. so make sure what you do there.
you should read this before editing the file, this will give you a better understanding of what to put there: https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/darwin/reference/manpages/ man8/tnftpd.8.html

  • OS X Built in FTP client lockdown

    andres666 wrote:
    Sorry about that yes.
I was asked to look into how I can remove or prevent users from using the built in FTP capability os OS X.
The "built in FTP capability" is implemented with the executable file /usr/bin/ftp. You could delete that file, but instead I'd recommend changing its permissions settings to that it's no longer executable. That could be done with this command in a terminal session:
    sudo chmod 444 usr/bin/ftp

  • IWeb's built in ftp client won't upload new files

iWeb's built in ftp client is mad at me, refusing to upload new files. No doubt because last Sunday I asked GoDaddy to change my domain name (same site, name changed). They did. Immediately nothing would upload. GoDaddy said "Well some FTPs are picky." Problems continued so I said OK, please change the domain name back to its previous name, and all would be put right again. I thought.
No so. iWeb's ftp client seems still offended for having been disturbed. I make a change. Save. Click Publish Site Changes. Get the window saying Content Rights. Click Continue. The blue line scrolls nicely, "Publishing will continue in the background" shows, then **"Your site has been published"**...
...but no changes or files have been uploaded. The old page is the same.
Looks like I permanently po'd iWeb’s ftp. Should I give up and rebuild my site in a new folder? Try Fetch?
I shouldn't have done that stupid thing last Sunday. Live and learn.
    Help?

The root folder on the server is the top level one that you upload your files to.
You publish your website files to a local folder on your Mac. This produces an index.html file and a folder with the same name as your site in iWeb.
An FTP application transfers the files on your Mac to the root folder on the server using File Transfer Protocol.
Unlike Cyberduck, most shareware FTP applications will show both the files on your Mac and those on the server in the same window so its just a question of browsing to the folder containing your website files on your Mac and dragging them across to the icon of the root folder on your server. The application will take care of the rest.
The process really is just about as simple as dragging files from one folder on your Mac to another as long as you have the FTP application set up correctly.

  • Built-in FTP not showing all files

I have my 15" flat panel connected to a Topfield 7160 PVR by an ethernet cable.  The Topfield has a built-in FTP server.  So, using the built-in FTP (read only) facility in OS X Tiger, I can show the Topfield files on the Finder.
Recently, however, the FTP facility has not been accessing all folders on the Topfield properly.  Some folders are shown as empty when they are not.  When I disconnect and reconnect, different folders are shown as empty.
I have tested the Topfield FTP server with the Cyberduck client. Everything shows properly.  So, there is an issue with the OSX Tiger FTP client and/or how it sends commands to the Topfield FTP server.
Does anyone know what the problem might be ?
    Many thanks
    Garry

I think your second question is correct - I think I see more if I open up further down the tree.  I'll have to do some tests with the Finder and my AppleScript.  I'll search for more online regarding the file limit.
I know that being read only the OS X ftp client isn't fully featured.  I wouldn't be surprised if there are limitations.
    Many thanks.

  • Does the Built-in Windows FTP Client Support a Secure Connection?

I have set up Server 2008 IIS w/ FTP. I set the SSL setting to require a secure connection. However, I can't connect to the FTP server from the built-in Windows FTP client. I CAN get it to work in FileZilla after modifying my connection properties.
Does the built-in Windows FTP client support secure connections? I received a request to set this up so our internal employees can share files with external customers. Many times our customers are unable to install any kind of third party software on their
