FTP Error Occurred - Cannot make connection

I've been receiving this message:
"An ftp error occurred - cannot make connection to host. Your
login or password is incorrect. Please check your connection
information."
when trying to set-up and download active websites originally
built in FrontPage. Do Dreamweaver & FrontPage not play well
with each other? Why would that affect my being able to connect to
my websites via Dreamweaver? I have double and triple checked the
logins and passwords. They are correct. Also, I have no problem
setting up and uploading a new site.
Remote Info Site Definition Settings:
Access: FTP
FTP host: www.mywebsite.com
Host directory: blank
Login: my login
Password: my password
I've:
tried with passive FTP checked and unchecked
tried with Secure FTP checked and unchecked

Thanks to anyone who can help :)

No. My sites that I created originally in Dreamweaver work
and connect fine. I've compared the settings and I have them set
the same. It's driving me nuts, to say the least!!

"An FTP Error occured - cannot make connection to host. No response from the server".
As of today this is all i get when trying to connect to every single ftp account i have. It's not the server cause it's every one and there is several different. Tried passive and non-passive same result. I've connected fine with other FTP clients. So this must be another dreamweaver bug. Anyone know what to do?

Very hard to diagnose these problems, particularly as you can connect using a 3rd party program.
See if the 'timeout' issue could be at play here:

  • An ftp error occurred cannot make connection to host DW CS4

OK... I just recently installed Dreamweaver CS4. I am trying to connect to a clients site and I keep on getting the following error:
an ftp error occurred cannot make connection to host. the remote host cannot be found
A couple of days when I was in DW CS3, I never had this problem, apparantly others have also had this problem however all the help that I have seen is for PC.
When I entered all of my info, I then proceeded several times to 'Test' , I have been able to connect succesfully but when I try to connect to remote host, I get that error message.
    Please help!!!!
I am using Mac OS X Version 10.5.8

    Hi,
In the remote info tab, Access-> FTP, click on Server Compatibility button.
    Uncheck FTP Perfomance Optimization.
Try to re-connect to your web server.
    OR
In the FTP field, you don't have to type the protocol (ftp://....)

  • One of my sites still connects but the other gets An ftp error occurred cannot make connection to host.

My problem is in “connect to remote server”. I manage two sites in Dreamweaver CS6, and they are hosted by the same guys.  One site still connects fine but the other one has stopped connecting. With the second site when I click on the button I get a delay then "An ftp error occurred -- cannot make connection to host".
However I can still access the second site’s remote server through an FTP program, and the Host tech support confirms my login is working fine from his computer.
I tried doing this old trick (1) Site > Manage Sites > Export to create a .ste file (2) quite, restart (3) Manage Sites > Import the .ste file (4) click on connect to remote server --  But that made no difference

Just because both sites are hosted by the same firm doesn't mean they are on the same physical server.  Your problem connecting could be attributable to many things.
User name and password may have changed or been reset.
Server permissions problems (GoDaddy is notorious for this).
    IP blocking.
    Server is down.
    etc...
Are you able to connect with a 3rd party FTP client like FileZilla?  If not, I'm guessing this is a server problem & you need to contact your host.

  • Dreamweaver - FTP error occurred - cannot make connection

Hello I am trying to update a site and I am getting an error:
FTP error occurred - cannot make connection to host.
I absolutely did change any kind of FTP settings in the last 3 months.
Everything has been working fine up until now.
Justhost is who I use, I talked to there tech support they said they checked on there side and are able to connect and everything is working there, they are telling me it has something to do with dreamweaver.
The only thing new is a I did an update earlier to adobe creative cloud - I don't think that would be the problem though.
If anyone can please please help me or point in the right direction I will greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks

    Hello,
it's well known, that  In all these cases you describe  I'm not a friend of a detailed troubleshooting. To be able to be independent in all this things It is one of the reasons why I prefer an external FTP program. The difficulties with which you have to fight encourage me in this opinion, not least because we always search for experts, we don't charge a "jack of all trades".
To manage several websites or to upload my files and sometimes for the opposite way, for a necessary download from my server or to use a "a site-wide synch", I'm using FileZilla. It simply looks easier for me to keep track of all operations precisely and generate or reflect easily the desired tree structure.
Above all, FileZilla has a feature (translation from my German FileZilla) called "compare file list". Here it's possible to use file size or modification time as a criterion. There is also the possibility to "hide identical files", so that only these files which you want to redact remain visible.
And even if it means you have to install a new program, I am convinced that there is an advantage. Here is the link to get it and where you can read informations about how it works:
    http://filezilla-project.org/ and http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Tutorial#Using_the_site_manager
Mac: Mac OS X (Use: Show additional download options)
    http://filezilla-project.org/download.php
Of course, you also need all the access data to reach your server and for MIME issues, you should contact your web host/provider.
    Good luck!

    P.S.
Since I use two screens, the whole thing became even more comfortable.

  • Error message: an ftp error occurred - cannot make connection to host.  ...not authorized to make the connection due to local firewall

I am currently using windows 8.1 and also have a norton antiviurs software installed.

Have you disabled your Windows Firewall?
You should also download and install (free) Filezilla, and see it it works for you.
Always good to have a backup FTP program.
I assume you have toggles the active/passive etc. settings

    Mac OS 10.8.5
None of these issues are causing the error in DW CS6. We have double checked all of them and we have everything exactly right. Also I have exactly the same SiteSetup in DW CS4 and that works perfectly well. Could there must be factor in 6 that didn't exist in 4? Something that isnt in the SiteSetup but in some hidden dialog box ?
I can also upload to my host using Fetch, a third party FTP. And as I said DW CS4 works fine. So the problem is not with my host, its with DW CS6 in particular.

Thank you Jon, that fixed it perfectly. You have saved me from going crazy. The only difference I see now is in "Server Name" it changed what I had entered (my ftp address) to "Remote Server"; which seems odd -- but it works!   Although I know there maybe also some other dialog box I have never seen
Of course I saw that menu item "Import"  and but I thought thats obviously not for me: "Why would I want to import an entire website?". I did not however see "Export the selected site" for thats only a tiny icon in the footer. However I would have thought the same:  "Why would I want to export my entire website?".
An observation: I've seen this problem in a lot of Adobe software, the menu-names of items are  obscure, non descriptive. What would be better would be for the menu names or popups to say "Export Site Setup settings" and "Import Site Setup settings"

  • An FTP error occurred - cannot put [file name.htm]. Dreamweaver encountered an internal data error

I get the message “Server not responding” whenever trying to add files to my web site via DW. The following message appears: "An FTP error occurred - cannot put [file name.htm]. Dreamweaver encountered an internal data error. Please try the operation again."
I called the hosting service provider, and they said they were able to upload a 20 mb document with no problem. I was also able to upload a document using Filezilla.
Therefore, the problem must be with DW.
When I go to Manage Sites and choose my site and get to the Test Connection button, the test is successful, which further confuses the issue.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

It is possible it is a host issue but because they use a higher level account to test that they do not see the error.

  • Ftp error - cannot make connection

Using Dreamweaver CS3 on Microsoft XP. When I try and set up
ftp for our web site in Site Manager, to allow files to be checked
in and out, it does not work. The error message is "An FTP error
occurred - cannot make connection to host. Your login or password
is incorrect." It is possible to create an ftp connection to the
same site in Dreamweaver using the other option in Site Manager,
"Connect to an FTP server without defining a site ". The only
diffrence I can see in the configuration is that the screen for
this option includes the field "URL Prefix". Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

I think the thing has got sorted. I tried putting in the
Control panel password, which didn't work, and when I tried it
again with the ftp password it did. No rational explanation. Thank
    you.

The typical disclaimer is up to 48 hours. Can you connect
    with the IP
    address?
You might try turning on/off Passive Mode in the site
    definition.
Are you certain you have the correct user id and password for
    the new
site? You can test this with your OS built-in FTP client.
Open a command line interface (Windows: cmd, OS X: terminal)
    and type
the following, using your domain name, user id, and password
    at the
    appropriate prompts:
    ftp ftp.example.com
    user
    password
    ls
    bye
Were you able to log in and see a list of files/directories?

  • FTP Error - cannot make connection to host.

Hello! Have been searching through the forums and have seen
some topics that are similar to the problem I am facing but have
not found one to solve it yet. I connect to mulitple FTP servers
through Dreamweaver to upload and manage sites. As of late I will
will try and connect to make updates and I keep on getting this
    error maessage....
An FTP Error occurres - cannot make connection to host.
It has happened on multiple servers from various providers. I
am convinced that it is a Dreamweaver issue or a connection issue
on my system. Any thoughts, help, or ideas to fix the problem would
    be greatly appreciated.
I have tried most of the things out there on the boards but
nothing has worked for me. The odd thing is that earlier today I
was uploading through FTP on one of my sites and now that one won't
work. Another site has been giving me hassle for days. Please any
help would be much appreciated! I thank you for any time spent
ahead of time answering this post! Blessings!

Having problems with Dreamweaver FTP, any suggestions appreciated. Using CS6 on Windows 8.1 via Virgin Media Super Hub.
Dreamweaver successfully connects to FTP server and PUT's maybe 5 to 10 jpg files then stops with this error: (uploading immediately after PUTS a few more up then stops with the error again):

Dreamweaver cannot connect to host. This may be due to one or more of the following reasons:
    - The network cable is unplugged or the network is down. Please verify that the network cable is connected and that the network is up.
    - The FTP server is down. Please verify that you can connect to the FTP server using another FTP program.
    - The FTP host name is incorrect. Please verify that the host name is correct in the Site definition dialog box.
    - Accessing the server requires proxy settings that aren't properly set. Please verify that the proxy settings in the Site category of the Preferences dialog box are properly set, and that the Use Proxy option in the Site definition dialog box is selected.
    - You may need to connect to the server using a different port than the one provided. Please specify the correct port in the box provided.
Have already tried with no effect:
    - Temporarily disabling Windows Firewall

I recently installed CS4, and I can not make a connection to my website.  Message an FTP error occurred and cannot make a connection to host. The remote host cannot be found.

Open up your site definition (double-click on the site name in the File panel or choose Site > Manage Sites > Edit) and go to the Remote Info category. There, click Use Firewall (if it isn't already selected) - press Test to try the default firewall settings. If that doesn't work, click Firewall Settings. You'll see two relevant settings about 2/3 down - Firewall host and Firewall port. If Firewall port is 21, there probably is something blocking the port.
On Windows XP, you may have the Windows Firewall installed and blocking. Here's how you get to it:
    To open Windows Firewall
    1.
Click Start and then click Control Panel.
    2.
In the control panel, click Windows Security Center.
    3.
    Click Windows Firewall.
Once you have that open, you'll need to set Dreamweaver as an exception to blocking:
On the Exceptions tab, click Add                     Program.
In the list of programs, click the name of the program (Dreamweaver) that you                     want to add, and then click OK. If the name of your program is                     not in the list of programs, click Browse to locate the Dreamweaver.exe in the Program Files folder and then click OK.
