FTP File Sharing protect documents

I have three computers. FTP is working fine but it is too broad. I only want the public folder to be visible to each other computer. The other two computers are a G-4 and an iMac. Can I limit access or protect other files?

Would anonymous FTP work for the situation?
Are you just trying to do a drop box? are you trying to make this available for internet visitors?

How do I activate the VPN, FTP, and File Sharing on my server? Also, is there a way to access my server from another machine without using my IP address without port forwarding and/or registering an internet host name? Also, I have another post on how to use VPN on server, found here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22026213#22026213
Please answer to both of these posts, I really want to make this server thing work.

Do you know how to connect to my server without knowing the IP of the host and without registering for a internet domain name or port forwarding?
This is absolutely not possible.  To connect to a remote server, somebody somewhere has to enter the identity of the target server among the billions of net-connected devices.
Now can that information be loaded into a client device, and can an end-user avoid having to know about these and other details of networking?  Sure.  What's variously called "provisioning" is a common approach used here.
There are other approaches available which can be useful on different and often on smaller networks, such as what Apple calls Bonjour; variously known as multicast DNS services and service discovery.
    There are other potential solutions.
Also, does anyone know how to specially protect a folder in File Sharing?
Sure.  Usually with what's called a file mode or protection mask, or via access control lists.
Whether the protections are effective depends greatly on who you're protecting against, and how the files are being shared.
My server at school only allows certain users to access certain folders, but when I connect to my server I have the same username so I don't need to enter any kind of log in.
Why not ask the folks that run the server for information?  You are affiliated with a school, and the purpose of such institutions is to learn, after all.  Ask some questions of the folks that are running the configuration you're familiar with.
If it's a typical educational configuration, there'll be a "directory" — Microsoft Active Directory is common, though there are others — containing information mapping your identity to what you're authorized to access or do, as well as a variety of other information such as your identity and your email address and which mail server you're using for accessing your mail.
Can you password protect the folder?
Directly?  Not really.  Details here depend greatly on the operating system and file system involved, and on how the files are being served, and how the files will be accessed.   File-level encryption can be used, and web servers can protect folders, and various operating systems including OS X support what are called encrypted disk images.  Web content management systems can also provide access controls, too.
Rather than continuing this blizzard of questions, please consider providing us with some background on the problem you're looking to solve here, and some of the general requirements.  There can be many potential solutions, and even more wrong solutions.  With some idea of what you're looking to do, we might be able to give you something more specific to look into.
As for learning more about OS X and OS X Server and server networking — all of which can provide some background and can introduce a number of these general topic areas — see the OS X Server documentation, and — for yet more detailed information — see the 10.6 server documentation that's linked from there.  The older 10.6 OS X Server documentation was much more detailed.

  • FTP File Sharing

Howdy. I do produce video and audio for people. I am doing a project now where the clients dont even live in the same town or state. I would like to have a Mac Mini set up in the future where i can put the file on the hard drive and then send a link in an email to the client and then have a link or instructions on there to tell them how to get to the file they are supposed to get. That way i can send multi gig files to them and they can down load them on their own time and i dont have to waste discs and postage mailing things over night. I would need something where they can not acess any of the other files for other clients on there only the ones for them. Does anybody know of such a software or how to do it. I am needing something similar to a Digidelivery server made by Digidesign. http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?navid=38&langid=100& Thanks for the help.

  • Looking for help for sharing pdf files with ipad from mac.  Pages only recognizes text.  What app should I use for file sharing pdf documents?

Looking for advice on how to share pdf files with iPad from Mac.   Pages seems to only recognize text.   What app is recommended for pdf documents?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
If I understand your question, you want to read pdfs on your iPad, not create or edit.
Drag pdf files to the iPad icon in Finder while connected to your computer via the USB cable.
They will show up in the iBooks application
(If you don't already have iBooks, it's a free download from the App Store.)
Once installed, there are two buttons at the top left of the Bookshelf.
One is Books, the other is Collections.
Tap Collections, and you'll see Books and PDFs.
    Tap PDFs and you're there.

  • My Mac got hacked. I was working on a word document when the computer suddenly started typing meaningful sentences on its own that describes how the hacker is skillful. At the that time I was on a password protected wifi and file sharing was off.

This is the first time I get hacked this bad. I was working on a microsoft word document when the computer suddenly started typing meaningful sentences on its own that describes how skillfull the hacker is. At the that time I was on a friends wifi network that is password protected (not sure about the encyrption), the Os X Firewall was on. I was using the admin profile, however, file sharing was off. I'm very careful not to install any suspecious 3rd party software.
So far I have verified permissions and fixed some errors there, and changed passwords.
Do I have to erase/format my computer and reinstall the Os? If so is it adequte to use the internet recovery tool or will it use old and possibly infected EFI/Root files?
Would appreciate the advice of all the Mac experts out there. Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Is FTP server better than common file sharing

what is better : ftp server or common file sharing on server
i need to convince the management that ftp server is better than file sharing on server but i need some strong security points.

    I agree on DropBox.
In DropBox, Favorite (Star) the files (documents, MP3...) when you are on-line.  They will be available when you are off-line. Test access to your files in Airplane mode before you leave home.
To bring the document into an app (e.g., Pages), use 'Open In..'..  the MP3, you can just tap in DropBox.
There are solutions to get files back from different apps to DropBox, but honestly it is probably just easiest to email it to yourself (and then use your Mac to copy the final file back to DropBox for reference purposes).
    Have a good vacation.

  • Seeking a document management and file sharing solution for an online client portal

    Hi
Late last year our developers created a Member’s Portal for a client’s website (built with WordPress) enabling Members to have a secure area for a discussion forum and crucially, secure
document storage and access, and file-sharing. The WordPress plugin chosen for the Portal was WP-Client.
We have a problem though and I wonder if you or anyone can help?
Basically, the solution was supposed to be like Dropbox or Google Drive but within the Portal but with slight differences. The problem is that the current solution we have isn’t like either
and has various flaws which make it unpopular with most members. It uses free software called kcfinder – see
http://kcfinder.sunhater.com/ as the basis for the file management systems.
So we are seeking to change the file management system. This system must do the following:
It’s got to be intuitive e.g. the action open or download must be ‘typical’ (it is not so in kcfinder you have to right click to download for instance
You must be able open an Office document (especially Word, Excel and Powerpoint) online in situ within the portal. Currently in kcfinder you have to download it.
You must be able to edit it online. Currently you have to download it, open it, edit it, re-upload it and overwrite it.
The client uses Sharepoint (I think that’s part of MS Office 365) and wants to be able to I think drag docs from there straight into the Portal file management system (I think at the moment they have to download a file from Sharepoint to their hard drive
    and then upload to kcfinder.
We are currently investigating using a WP plugin for Google Drive
https://wp-glogin.com/drive/ and Google Apps for work to create some sort of file management system that meets the requirements.
However having loaded the plugin, the developer has found that two issues remain that so far defeat us:
Firstly, and this seems to be applicable to using Google Drive outside the portal as well as in it - you can’t edit Word docs online in Google Drive without creating a Google Doc. This means we get duplicate docs which we don’t want – and they’re in
the wrong format. We want Word and no duplication. The members/users don’t have time to delete and change the format back to Word. I guess the same applies to other Office docs.
Second, apparently you can’t create a new folder in Google Drive in the portal.
So my question for this forum is really what can you suggest, either as a fix to the Google Drive solution or is there a totally different plugin or set up we can use? Ideally it should
be Office-based or friendly since most of our users use Microsoft Office.
The other proviso is that it must be affordable. We/client cannot afford the $10 per user per month that some systems charge. The attractiveness of the Google option is not only the wide
use of Google Docs (notwithstanding the fact that you can't open Word in GD instead it creates a duplicate in GD) but the fact that the plugin is cheap.
    Thanks in anticipation.

    Hi,
Why don't you take a look at Office Web App server which provides browser-based file viewing and editing services for Office files:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219435.aspx
It can be integrated with your customized website, and provide the ability to online view/editing Office documents..
    Hope it helps.

  • I select my Ipad under devices in itunes, go to apps that support file sharing, select kindle but none of the kindle book files on my ipad appear under kindle documents

I want to copy books I've purchased for Nook and for Kindle from my Ipad to my laptop.  In Itunes I select the Ipad under devices, select apps at the top of the screen and scroll to file sharing apps.  When I select the kindle app or the nook app nothing appears under the documents window.

You can't do it via File Sharing, those two stores don't support the copying of your Kindle/Nook purchases off their apps via file sharing.
If you want your Kindle book on your laptop then you could download the Kindle app from Amazon and download the books directly in it : Kindle apps.
    I don't think that Nook have a PC/Mac app

  • Shared folders document doesn't show up over USB in Files

Playbook Question. Our app writes files to the Shared Folder Documents folder. I know they are there because the app can read them after they are written. They simply don't show up in the Desktop Software Files section and they don't show up in the Z: drives Documents folder. If I create an empty file in the Z: Documents folder and then write to it with the app the file will contain the information he app writes to it. What am I missing. Do I need to set something on the Playbook? Do I need to set somthmg on the Desktop Software This happens in both the Photos and Documents folder that the app writes to. Thanks for any help. gjw

Right-click on the desired folder and choose Get Info from the contextual menu.  In the info window that appears, toward the bottom is a section for Sharing & Permissions (click on the disclosure triangle if the section isn't open).   You may also need to click on the lock (at the lower right corner) to unlock and authenticate in order to make changes.
The normal permissions for a user's Public folder is read only for staff and everyone (items can also be put in the Drop Box).  The normal permissions for the /Users/Shared folder is read & write for everyone, although the appropriate permissions need to be set by the owner (or use something like Access Control List (ACL) entries) to allow people to modify items that are owned by others.

  • Documents in the file sharing table in iTunes

I have documents in the File Sharing table (in the apps button) which are coming up when the iPages app is selected. A lot of them I do not wish to sync with my iPad and therefore, I would like to delete them. However, I am not able to. Any ideas?

Click on the file and press the Delete key on your keyboard.

  • Password Protecting Personal File Sharing

    Hi,
I can't find an option to password-protect the Personal File Sharing in System Preferences - and if I click Network in Finder, I can see my Mac (local server) and am able to access any folder, app or whatever. Can people on other macs who joined my network do this? The firewall for PFS is turned on.
    Thanks guys.

You're not really turning PFS off. Didn't mean to give you that impression, sorry.
Sharepoints lets you specify which folders you ARE sharing, and password-protects them.
Just download it and see. A picture/demo is worth 1,000 words.
    This is donationware software.
Like it? pay the guy something.
Don't like it? Don't use it.
Don't want to donate a few shekels? Then don't. (cheapskate that's a wink, since I'm just joking with you there.
I am not affiliated with Sharepoints in any way.

  • File Sharing Checkbox / FTP

We are in process of setting up a new Mac Server where we want to use as an FTP server. All HELP and tutorials indicate that the first thing you do is go to Preferences > Sharing > and check the "File Sharing" selection where you can then indicate to share as an FTP. However, when we go to the Mac-Server > Preferences > Sharing, it does not list "File Sharing" as an option to check. Any ideas why File Sharing is not listed as a possible sharing item?

It sounds like you're in the wrong place - you're using System Preferences, right?
System Preferences -> Sharing is where the FTP server is controlled in Mac OS X client
In Mac OS X Server it's configured and controlled via Server Admin (or Server Preferences if running in the 'easy' mode).

  • I downloaded pages, completed file sharing but can not open the documents on my ipad

I have pages on my ipad2, I went through the file sharing instructions for 2 files.  I can not open them in pages.  When I go to Documents, copy from itunes, the files show but cannot be selected.

Quit Pages and restart the iPad and try again.
In order to quit or close apps - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Make sure that they are compatilbe file extensions on the files or they will not open ... .doc, .docx, .pages

  • Sharing a document file.

I setup a sharepoint and assigned permissions to this group.
when someone is editing/working on a doc file off the server, and another user from the same group connects to the server and open/edit the same file.. it still open, i mean it doesn't prevent the 2nd user or at least it doesn't show or display a message that this document is in-use with another user.. is there away to solve it ?
    Thanks,

I know of an operating system that provides this (and how it implements it), but Mac OS X doesn't provide a mechanism for file locking for this access control and file sharing stuff that's applicable between arbitrary applications.
The closest analog is probably something akin to a version control system; where you check out the file, and then check it back in when you're done. That's effective, but not nearly as transparent nor as simple as a file share, though.
