FTP permissions

I'm having problems with my ftp services. I'm getting an error on downloading files via web browser links, stating that "you don't have permission to open this page"
I have made sure the under the FTP settings for the volume that I'm sharing, the allow ftp share this item using FTP as well as the Allow FTP guest access is turned on.
I have propagated the permission of the volume down to all inclosed folders and files.
The Custom FTP name is all so the same as the volume name.
I also made sure that 50 anonymous users can connect via FTP.
This has been working for years and now all of the established links in web pages are not able to gain access to the FTP services.
I can't even log in via and the FTP client transmit. It just reports Server said: Login Incorrect, (this is for guest access.
What am I missing, what would cause this?

UPDATE
Well I just rebuilt the server, after not being able to solve the permissions issue. All is well again.

OS 10.4.11 FTP Permissions set to 640 on Upload

I have a G4 in my classroom running OS 10.4.11 (not OS X Server) with Personal Web Sharing and FTP turned on. My students upload web pages to it over FTP. Whenever they upload a NEW file, permissions get set to 640 on the server. Of course this prevents anyone from browsing to the web pages, defeating the whole purpose. Permissions are set to 640 no matter the permissions of the original file, and no matter which FTP client I use. (I've tried Dreamweaver, FireFTp, and command line FTP in the Terminal.) In order for the web pages to be browsable, I have to go in and manually change permissions to something sensible like 644, which is impractical because there are 40 students constantly updating their web pages. If they upload a REPLACEMENT file, the permissions are not modified and everything is OK.
Last year we were running OS 10.2, and there was a fix in which I set the ftp unmask by creating a file /etc/ftpd.conf which had one line saying:
umask all 022
But since upgrading to 10.4, I tried this fix and it no longer works.

There's many ways to accomplish this, but I'd use Sharepoints...

Set up a Normal Share, Give it the AFP/SMB Sharing you need, click on the Show File System Properties, set the Owner, Group, & Permissions, click on the inherit Permissions from Parent, Update Share.
If that doesn't work there's always BatchMod to drop the whole Share on and change Permissions wholesale in one swoop.

FTP permissions error

Ok, this is sort of a FTP problem, but it involves permissions etc so I'm asking here. I think that's right.
I run Joomla on my site, I was using Mambo but since the Akocomment component doesn't work under Joomla 1.0.3 I've decided to switch to MosCom which is probably better anyway. I have it all working great locally on a test setup so I installed it on the live site via the Joomla CP and then logged in via FTP to delete the files I'd hacked around with locally and replace them with my own.
I can't delete them, whenever I try I get a permission denied error (this is in gFTP). Great, so I tried changing the permissions on the files to 777 (went out on a limb here) and got this:
SITE CHMOD 777 comments.html.php
550 Could not change perms on comments.html.php: Bad file descriptor
Now I'm at the "oh shit" stage, so I logged into cPanel to see if I could kill the files from the file manager in there, long shot which didn't pay off. No errors but nothing happened. Any ideas on how I can get rid of these? I don't have shell access to the host, all the other files I can access nicely are owned by 32274:cam, these files are 99:99.
Any ideas? Email support and get them to remove the files as root? This sucks.

Okay fixed it. Created a PHP script that ran rm -r on the directory and that worked. Guess httpd is running as a weird user on the host or something :?:

OSX 10.9.2 ftp permissions

Using Transmit for FTP uploads to / downloads from server. Getting message 'permission denied - error -160 - cannot upload'
Been using Mac, OSX, Transmit and server for several years. Problems started after upgrading to Mavericks.
Lighest fix : change the permissions using 'get info' - no dice. No combo does it.
( Able to download, no problem.)
What should I do?

Try booting into your Recover Drive and run Repair Drive from Disk Utility and reset User's permissions. Directions here to reset permissions. After you can open Disk Utility on recovery and run repair drive.
Use OS X Recovery Disk Assistant to reset Your files and folder permissions
Another option is test in a new User. You can use the Guest User or create a new test User in System Preferences.
Log into the new User and test Transmit. You can put some test files in the Shared folder for access in the new User.
If the problem goes away in the new User, you know the problem is specific to your User.

Ftp permissions in system preferences vs of the directories it accesses

I'm trying to setup a read only ftp account to access a directory on one of my external drives.
The external drive doesn't have permissions enabled.
So:
- I create an account to login to
- in its home directory, I create a link to the external drive (using the command line to create it as a soft link). Accidentally, I leave this as read-write by the owner, though read by others
- in the ftp setup panel I enable ftp for this user - but set it to read only
I then find that ftp allows this user to write to that directory.
What I'm at a loss then is to understand what the point of the permissions setup in SystemsPreferences is. I'd expected ftp to use the most restrictive of either those settings and of the file/directory permissions involved (so that its easy to make an account read only for remote access without stopping it being used for read-write when used locally without involving ftp).
How should this work? Any help gratefully received.

Offensivenss and intrusiveness notwitstanding are you sure there is nothing about this in the terms of use/license agreement/whatever you or your husband accepted both for this installation and the OS in general? (Please note that I am not an Adobe employee, but I suspect Adobe has sufficient legal counsel not to open themselves to claims of misconduct easily.)

FTP Permissions 10.2.8 . HELP ME Please (I've done my homework)

So I have spent hours looking.
Yes I know, its an old Xserve running 10.2.8.
I wanted to change the default umask for files being sent via FTP.
I want the GROUP to inherit WRITE Privs. So I believe i am correct in saying
"umask all 002"
I found this Apple KB which Appeared to be the ticket but did not work.
It uses the command "defumask" :

I have also applied the following line at the end of the file:
Library/FTPServer/Configuration/ftpaccess
umask all 002
This is not working,
and I have tried creating folder etc/ftpd.conf
and using "umask all 002"
* I believe this works with "OS X" but not "OS X SERVER 10.2.8"
So PLEASE PLEASE.

When you ftp to a machine, you are logging into that machine. The machine's shell settings are put into your environment. Most FTP servers do have the ability to change those settings according to the FTP server's configuration.
This basically adds up to 3 ways that the file perms could be set. How the FTP server is configured to set them, the user's settings for how to set them, and the parent directory could have sticky permissions (you're probably used to seeing it as inherited permissions).
The FTP server can probably change the user's settings, but the filesystem would override the user's settings.

How should I deal with FTP permissions?

Ok, I'm not sure what would be the best way to deal with this. I have folders set up for several websites that each have a different user that administrates them. So I set each of the intended users home to the website root, and gave them ownership of the folder and it's files. I also have FTP set to chroot to the home directory.
I have run into a couple problems with this.
- First, if they were so inclined, the users could log in via SSH or an SCP program and get outside of their home directory. I would prefer that they were unable to. Can I set their shell to ftponly or something as such?
- Second, I have an on site admin that is often called on by the website clients to make small changes to their site. And I'm not sure how to set up his access so that he can have the ability to FTP in, have full rwx access to the users files, overwrite them, and go about his business without having to than do a chown on the new files so that they are all owned by the end user. Is there an easy way to do this, or should I write a perl script that either triggers on his logout or that he can run, to set the chmod/chown correctly after he's done.

i tried to publish my site, but the error "folder can not be made //images"occurs repetetly.
What can i do?

Hello Tom,
If you're getting this error when you try to upload your site on another host, and not Business Catalyst, it may be an issues with the permissions. Please speak to the host and have them reset your FTP permissions, and see how that goes with the upload then.

Why is my clients Muse site not exporting images properly?

As you confirmed, the site looks fine in another platform (Business Catalyst). Let's try one more thing here.
If you haven't already, please export the site from Muse to a location of your choice in your computer using the "File -> Export As HTML" option in Muse, and once done, go to that location and run the pages locally to check if the images look fine there. If they do, that means the images are exported fine from Muse, and the issue is most possibly at the host's end.
In that case, please have the host "reset your FTP permissions" and reupload the site to see if that resolves the issue.

Muse site doesn't display properly

Here's the deal. I created a site in muse, then exported to html. Muse created index.html inside of the folder where the muse doc is located. That's exactly what I expect. Now, when I ftp to my webserver, all I get is plain text. I don't think the server is the culprit, because it hosts other muse sites properly. if I navigate to the UNC path and launch index.html, it displays properly. it's only when I hit the url from a browser. What could I possibly be doing wrong here?

On running the pages locally from the location where they were exported to, if they look fine and load up as they are supposed to, then it confirms that Muse exported the pages fine. This then leaves only two possibilities where things might have gone wrong, as mentioned below:
1. Either the upload didn't go fine. In this case, try re-uploading using both the "File -> Upload to FTP host" and "File -> Export As HTML" and then using an FTP client to upload to the host.
2. Or the host isn't rendering the site as it should. In this case, have the host "Reset your FTP permissions" and then reupload the site to see if that resolves the issue.

Hello,
Please publish your site to Business Catalyst as a trial site by clicking on the "publish" button to see if the site looks fine on Business Catalyst.
If it does, you may want to first re-upload the site to your host (Upload all files, not modified files), and if the situation remains the same, you can ask your host to "Reset your FTP permissions" and then re-upload the site to the host. Check if that resolves the issue here.

You see, I need to change the Spry menu object across the
site, but I cannot change it on any page except the main page
because they all use a template that I no longer have access to.
So, how do I change these Spry menus? Can I re-create the template
without screwing up the site?

Template files have no function on the server. It's not
likely you will
find it there.
If the template was made using Template expressions/Template
parameters, or
Optional/Conditional Regions, you're hosed. If it was not,
it's a piece
o'cake.
1. Backup your site.
2. Close all open files.
3. Make a duplicate of the aboutus.htm file
3. Select this duplicate file in the file list.
4. Do a find and replace in this CLOSED selected file for
each of the
following -
Find -

Replace -
with nothing
i.e., delete it.
Find -

Replace -
with nothing
i.e., delete it
Find -
<!-- Instance
Replace -
<!-- Template
You now have a template file. Rename it to 'template.dwt' and
move it to
the Templates folder.
Now you can open it and edit out the contents in the editable
regions before
saving it again.

DHCP Server is not passing out DHCP Leases

I can't seem to figure out why DHCP server is not passing out DHCP lease a client?
Also I can't seem to figure out why NVI0 interface is UP? I have setup another box similarly and NVI0 is down on that and the DHCP server is working fine on that too. Strange!

I have gotten it resolved. Per your suggestion, I have turned on debug ip dhcp events and found that POOL EMPTY message. After little research, I found out that I have made a mistake in my excluded-address range.
I have had it as
ip dhcp excluded-address 192.168.1.1 192.168.100.101
It should have been
ip dhcp excluded-address 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.101.
It was a typo.
