FTP question for newbie -- How to access external volume?

I have set up an old Mac (running Tiger) as a server on my LAN; attached to this Mac are several Firewire disks. I want to use FTP (with retrospect Express) to automatically back up from another computer to these disks.
I can successfuly mount these Firewire disks using AFP on the other computer. But when I use FTP, I seem only to access the user account I use to log in. How do I get FTP to go those Firewire disks to transfer the backup files?
Please forgive me if this is a naive question... Thanks in advance for any advice!

To configure the FTP server in Tiger requires creating and editing certain files using the terminal application. So if you have no prior UNIX or command line experience you may find this tricky and you would need to read the man file for ftpd.
So I would suggest you try out PureFTP manager which is a front end application for an alternative FTP server.
I have used this Application and found it quite straightforward to use.

  • How to access external drives while in Windows

    Using VMWare Fusion as the system hosting Windows XP. Have specific programs in Windows only but of course they work much better on the IMac. I edit a ton of video and have the vids all stored on eternal drives. These drives are read by the Mac and all show up on the desktop and are accessible for all Mac programs.
    Here's the issue. I need to access those external drives from a Windows video editing program being run thru Fusion. The Windows program is accessing a folder via "Shared folder on host" but the only folders showing up there are the ones listed under "Home" om "My Places". I'm sure this is nothing more than a setting but I am in need of help! All my editing is held up at the moment so any assistance is greatly appreciated for this Apple rookie. Thanks.

    I don't have my laptop with fusion loaded, so I can't think of the exact terms. However, you should be able to set the shared folders in the settings for the virtual machine. The ones you see are the default setup, but you can define more paths to view while in Fusion.

  • Selection/layer question for newbie

    New user attempting to select image from one photo for layering to another.  Can select using tools without trouble but unable to understand how to use only the selected portion from one photo to overlay on background layer.  Would appreciate help from experienced users.  Thanks

    Let us say that you have pictures A & B
    Open both pictures.
    Make a selection with one of the tools on A. You should see "marching ants" around the selection
    Go to Edit>copy. This will put the selection on the clipboard
    Open picture B, go to Edit>paste. Now you should have the selection on its own layer on B
    Access the move tool, position the selection, and you can resize it with the corner handles as well

  • How to access external timeline Adobe Edge

    All-  I have mulitple Adobe Edge files where I need to access timelines at a specific label.  I've searched this topic and have only found Coder speak on how to accomplish this task.  Can anyone point me to a tutorial that uses  LAYMANS TERMS or an explanation on how I can get this done?  So far I'm using getURL to access other files.
    Thx

    If the external hard drive is plugged into ethernet it has to be a NAS, or something of that nature. It therefore has an IP address which must correspond to the IP of the TC. How have you setup this device.. does it have dhcp? If so you simply link to it from finder, go to server and type in the appropriate IP.. that is assuming it does not appear in finder without intervention.
    What is the device you are plugging in.. ?? That may help us help you.

  • How to access shared volume (AFP) thru NAT firewall for 2 or more Macs?

    Problem: I need to selectively access either of two macs on remote network, thru NAT router/switch, for file sharing from the remotes. I'm in Oregon; computers are in Hawaii on other side of a new Netgear wired router that works perfectly so far for Tumbuktu management (control & screen sharing). (On router, I forwarded ports 1417 and 1419 to the two computers, repectively. Then picking the port from here = Timbuktu access to the intended computer.)
    I have set up the router to forward port 548 (Apple AFP) to ONE of the computers' fixed IP addresses on the LAN (Say, 192.168.10.2). Works perfectly for that computer. But what other ports could I possible forward to computer #2 (192.168.10.3) that would pass AFP? I have tried a couple "unassigned" ports (e.g. 7555, 8548) with no success.
    Is there a trick or workaround I should know about? Any help would be appreciated.

    To do what you want with your current setup you need to run apple sharing on one of the other macs on a different port. So you can have 2 nat rules.
    Change your AFP port
    However it is not safe to open up filesharing to the internet unless you are going through a VPN connection or an SSH tunnel.
    SSH is already available on your macs. If you opened one mac's ssh port to the internet that is all you need. Then you only need to open tcp port 22 and setup a NAT rule to that mac's IP address. Turn on remote login in the sharing preferences.
    SSH can be made even more secure if you turn off password authentication and use public key authentication.
    Setting up public key authentication over SSH
    When SSH is running you can use ssh tunneling to open any other network port you want.
    Example
    this command in the terminal would do for AFP.
    ssh user@server -L 5548:localhost:548
    then in your finder you could connect to
    afp://localhost:5548
    other than that invest in an affordable VPN router. They are not expensive. Then once you engage the vpn connection you would get a Local IP from your network and connect to your other macs as if you are locally connected.

  • Adobe Air for iOS - How to access or read current playing music

    Hi guys, is there a way in AS3 how to detect the current song playing, for example I want to get the title of the music that is currently playing?

    Hi,
    This doesn't seem possible in AIR at present. However, in the future version, you should be able to achieve this. No AIR API will be added, but you should be able to write some native code to get this information. I believe this can be done using the iPod Library.
    Thanks,

  • Last question for today - how to draw with API circle of N pixels radius

    Hi,
    While I'm bit of exhausted while fighting with those paths movement (see my other thread in this forum) - I'd like to ask maybe someone has code snippet, which shows how to draw a circle of N pixels/N mm/inches radius?
    There is one helper function for that inside SDK samples:
    PDEPath DrawCurve(ASFixed x, ASFixed y, ASFixed x1, ASFixed y1, ASFixed x2, ASFixed y2, ASFixed x3, ASFixed y3, int lineWidth, int r, int g, int b)
    but I'm just out of my mind for today what parameters should be provided and how many calls of it I should write.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    You call it four times...
    Here is a snippet that explains the math...
    /* 4/3 * (1-cos 45)/sin 45 = 4/3 * sqrt(2) - 1 */
    #define ARC_MAGIC ((ASFixed) 0.552284749)
    #define PI ((ASFixed)3.141592654)
    void DrawCircle( ASFixed inCenterX, ASFixed inCenterY, ASFixed inRadius )
    /* draw four Bezier curves to approximate a circle */
    MoveTo( inCenterX + inRadius, inCenterY );
    CurveTo( inCenterX + inRadius, inCenterY + inRadius*ARC_MAGIC,
    inCenterX + inRadius*ARC_MAGIC, inCenterY + inRadius,
    inCenterX, inCenterY + inRadius );
    CurveTo( inCenterX - inRadius*ARC_MAGIC, inCenterY + inRadius,
    inCenterX - inRadius, inCenterY + inRadius*ARC_MAGIC,
    inCenterX - inRadius, inCenterY );
    CurveTo( inCenterX - inRadius, inCenterY - inRadius*ARC_MAGIC,
    inCenterX - inRadius*ARC_MAGIC, inCenterY - inRadius,
    inCenterX, inCenterY - inRadius );
    CurveTo( inCenterX + inRadius*ARC_MAGIC, inCenterY - inRadius,
    inCenterX + inRadius, inCenterY - inRadius*ARC_MAGIC,
    inCenterX + inRadius, inCenterY );

  • Question for N6300/ How to enlarge contact image?

    I just purchased a N6300, going from a 6600, and it bothers me that it does not show a large picture of the person that is calling me, just a small thumbnail. This thumbnail was even bigger on the 6600, and the whole picture could be displayed with apps for S60 (Symbian). Is there a setting of some sort or Java app that can be used to enlarge this caller image when calling or such? 10x

    No. On S40 phones you cannot run java apps in the background as you can do on S60.
