Ftp root and sharepoints setting bringing users right into home dir.

Hello, I pretty much understand the setup of ftp, but shouldn't the "ftp root and sharepoint" setting bring authenticated users into the ftp root first as the "/" directory? Then they should be able to access users since I have it shared and get into their directory if they need. But in my setup it brings them into their home directory first making it look just like the "home folders and sharepoints" setup. Any ideas?

This came up and bit me today, too.
If I set "Authenticated Users See:" to "Home Directory Only", it works as advertised and ftp users are dropped into their home directories.
If I set "Authenticated Users See:" to "FTP Root and Share Points", login invariably fails with the message "530 User username: can't change directory to /Users/username."

  • Default User Template for AD users with Win home dirs

    Hi all,
Can anyone tell me if it's possible for AD users with Windows based home directories to get a default user template given to them the first time they login to a Mac bound to AD?
I can give local users and users with home dirs on our Xserve my default user settings via the English.lproj template, but I cannot for the life of me get this to work for those users with Windows based home directories.
This is a biggie since my boss has mandated that ALL our student home directories are to be hosted under Windows from now on...
    Thanks in advance.

So you are using roaming profiles on AD and when they log into a Mac you want to setup their default, is that what I am hearing?
You will need to modify the English.lproj on the local machine to setup the default template. Since the mac server is not involved in the authentication and hosting of a roaming AD account with windows home folder, the client creates the home folder initially. Modify the default English.lproj on the clients.

But when I switch over to a user account with limited rights (we are talking about WinXP) it will not run and gives error messages. It happend to me at two almost the same computers, one with a DAQ-board, and one with an IMAQ-board. (At the computer with IMAQ1411 -> I also checked MAX -> errors/no access.) What to do?

    Hello,
I investigated the issue further. To work around this problem you should add write permissions to the C:\Program Files\National Instruments folder. Be sure that all subfolders and files are awarded write permission. This should solve your problems. eventually you could break it up to one file which must be set to write permission but by setting the whole folder to write permission you solve this problem for many other drivers to so you would not run into this everytime you use different hardware.

    Hi RJO22,
You can choose configure the Folder Redirection, Folder Redirection enables you to redirect the location of specific folders within user profiles to a new location, such as
a shared network location. Folder redirection is used in the process of administering user profiles and roaming user profiles. You can configure Folder Redirection using the Group Policy Management Console to redirect specific user profile folders, as well
as edit Folder Redirection policy settings.

  • ID and password won't let me into Home Network Defender

When I set up a new install of Home Network Defender two days ago, some of the settings were temporary. This evening I tried to go into HND to revise some settings and the access info that I wrote down when setting it up two days ago won't work. What do I need to do to get into HND to set it up.
I tried "Live Chat" That was much time and lots of restating the issue with finally getting some instructions to uninstall Network Magic Pro, reboot, and reinstall NM. I did. Nothing changed except the clock (more time lost).
I'd sure appreciate some helpful instructions for how to get into HND or how to uninstall it and start over. I can't see HND as an installed application on my computer.
    Router: WRT610N (working great)
    Adapter: WUSB600B (working great)
    o/s: Vista Home Premium 64-bit
    Intalled HND 6/8/09
Installed NM 6/8/09 and again 6/10/09
Tried to add anti-virus 6/8/09 (that seemed to be a non-starter)
    Cheers!

    I have similar problem.
When I tried to login i get following message "HND is registered to a different user account please try again ".
I spent one hour chatting with online support of linksys and got directed to Trend. Yester day I spent one hour with Trend to get "kicked" back to Linksys support.
This time (my third attempt) on phone support with linksys I spent another one hour resetting router WRT610N to factory default and reinstalling the software. Then got transfered to "Tech specialists". I was given an offer to remotely 'try' to fix for "additional cost" or can guide me.
At this time I have two softwares worth for a total of $100 that is not doing its work and I was given an option to fix remotely for 'additional cost". When asked about this to the agent, received a 'curt' reply that it is optional to spend.
Anyway eventually even this guided service did not work after once again reinstalling the software for the second time. I was then directed to "Purenetwork" saying they manufacture Network Magic software and they can reset from the server.
My fourth call with "Purenetwork" costed me another 1 Hour uninstalling the software, resetting the Router. Finally I was told this is a unique problem for which I will get reply once they discuss internally and find an answer. No time lines comitted. After more than 24 hours from my last call, I do not have any answer to my problem.
After seeing this many treads on HDN, I am surprised to see such product amd support from Linksys.
Can any one help me how to reset HDN?

  • Want to change the default save location- users have networked home dirs

I am doing some work for a school which is still using iMovie HD because it allows them to save their movie projects wherever they want. The issue is that iMovie 08 and 09 do not allow you to change the location in which they save their movies. Currently all users/students have network home folders, so their home directory, documents, etc all pull across the network. All students are limited to 1GB of space, and the system is an older G4 Server- 2GHz with 1GB of RAM and 2x 500GB hard drives. Since the students can make some large projects transferring that data back and forth can kill the server. Currently they are staying with iMovie HD so they can save it to the local hard drive, and when the student comes back in for class they sit at the same machine- thus giving them access to their stored movie files.
This summer they plan to upgrade both Xserves, but again internal storage in the Xserve is a joke and in my opinion not planned out properly. Which might require them to use one of the Apple Promise RAID units- major financial burden on a school.
I wanted to see if there was a way to change the default save location for iMovie 08 or 09 to the local storage rather then the "Home" folder for each user.
    Thanks so much!

    wrong info.
iM08/09 has a different file concept than iMHD6.
Both versions allow to store Events (=huge files) 'anywhere' to usb or firewire connected, hfs(+) formatted harddrives. the Project files (=small files) can be de-located from 'internal' drive with vers09, for 08 you have to use a socalled symLink to de-locate Project files.

  • Setting user rights through ODI

    Hi John!
    I need your advice :-)
We load new dimension member throw ODI, and after load we have to set the user right.
Can we set the user rights on objects that are loaded thought the instrumentality of ODI
    Regards
    Sasha

Ok, this is how I would do it.
I would have an interface that created a text file (the secfile.txt) with the security information.
Then I would have a procedure that runs an OS command that calls the importsecurity utility and uses the secfile.txt from above.
You will need an agent that is running on the planning machine so it can run an OS command on the machine.
That is it briefly, if you want further help then let me know.

  • FTP Root ignored ?

I am setting up FTP access to my OS X ( 10.4 ) server, and I set the FTP Root folder to be the web folder on the server. ( /Library/WebServer/Documents ). When I login as one ofthe users, say "admin", instead of going to the FTP Root, I just get that users Home Directory. I have restarted the FTP service many times with no change. This doesn't change with a terminal FTP login or "Conect to Server " connection or HTML connection. Even more distressing is that on a PC, if you use a browser and login, you get an HTML style list of files of the user's directory, but you can also go up one level multiple times anmd see a LOT more folders than I want ! We experimented with just the Admin user loggin in, so they have more rights, but....I just want a single folder where Web Page stuff can be copied up. How can I get this accomplished ?

What do you have selected in 'Server Admin > FTP > Settings > Authenticated Users See?' Sounds like it might be Home Directory Only. You could try 'FTP Root and Share Points' instead, and give the users no access to the share points (using ACL's).
What you're seeing in a web browser is the same thing you can probably see in an FTP app. In your FTP app, see if you can issue a raw ftp command, and try 'cd ..' and see where it takes you.

  • User rights management

    Hi
We may use Diadem for a group of 20 people, installed on Windows 2000 PC and/or Vista and using floatting licences . How can I set up user rights to allow only some people to do some operations, such as writting  dataplugins or create templates?
    Is Diadem compatible with Vista?
    Thanks

    Hi condor31,
DIAdem 10.2 is the first DIAdem version that is VISTA compatible.  Even the DIAdem Base license will allow your users to edit and create REPORT and VIEW layouts, so I don't see any way to stop users from doing that.  The Base license will not offer an easy way to create DataPlugins, though, so you could discourage users from writing DataPlugins by assigning them to the Base license list.  The NI Volume License Manager utility enables you to specify who is allowed to check out what type of DIAdem license (Base, Advanced, Professional).  That is really your only recourse-- DIAdem is otherwise an open tool that encourages users to take advantage of activated features.

  • Unix security and privacy setting unix command via apple remote desktop

Could someone guide me on the unix command to set System Preferemces Security & Privacy to xx minutes [see screenshot please] via Apple Remote Desktop.
    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5485939/osx_screenshots/sys%20pref%20security%20privacy .png
    Thank you,

Pereference tend to be stored for the computer as a whole
    /Library/Preferences/
    or specifcally for the user
    /Users/USERNAME/Library/Preferences/
well when I set required password for XX minutes... I see that
/Users/USERNAME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist modfication date & time changes to the current time & date... hMMM maybe the setting we want is stored here? Can we test this?
If I check require password and then do the terminal command:
    defaults read ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver
    I see
        askForPassword = 1;
        askForPasswordDelay = 0;
        tokenRemovalAction = 0;
    turn it off
    run the terminal command;
    defaults read ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver
    I see:
        askForPassword = 0;
        askForPasswordDelay = 0;
        tokenRemovalAction = 0;
so I can turn it on with
defaults write ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver askForPassword -bool TRUE
and I can turn it off with
defaults write ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver askForPassword -bool FALSE
So if a user is logged into a computer. I could send unix command as current console user.
defaults write ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver askForPassword -bool TRUE
BUT what if the user is logged out? or there are more then one user on the computer?
then I could run unix command as user root and send
defaults write /Users/USERNAME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver askForPassword -bool TRUE
(replace USERNAME with the user's short name.)
but what if I don't know the user name? or names
    send unix command as root
    ls -al /Users/
get back a list of folders
    bob
    surely
    shares
    and then do
    send unix command as root
defaults write /Users/bob/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver askForPassword -bool TRUE
defaults write /Users/surely/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver askForPassword -bool TRUE
you could also do some thing like
defaults write ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver askForPasswordDelay -integer 5
if you want to change the period of time to lock to 5 seconds
    or
defaults write ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver askForPasswordDelay -integer 900
    (900 seconds  / 60 seconds = 15 minutes)

  • Server, FTP, Aliases, and Network

I'm trying to setup OS X Server to share my 6 hard drives over ftp.  So far I can only do one at a time.
I cannot choose the Server in the network because it's not listed.  Even when it has been listed, it doesn't let me connect.  It's like the option is gone now that I' installed OS X Server.
When choosing Server from the network on the drop down menu, it doesn't let me click "Choose", I have to click one of the hard drives.  Why am I restricted to just one device?
I've shared all 6 hard drives with the correct permissions, but I'm stumped.  When I do have one of the hard drives selected in the ftp menu, I can log into it on the ftp browser no problem.
Also, I tried making alias links for all 6 hard drives and putting them in a shared folder for the ftp.  They show up on ftp, but clicking them only downloads the 600kb link file.  Any idea how I can get mapped drive links or something similar to work?
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

The FTP included in Mavericks is relatively basic in its implementation.  If it is in your budget, you might be better served looking at Rumpus.
However, before you go that route, you should try and use symbolic links, not aliases.  Aliases is an Apple link format while symlinks are a Unix link format.  Symlinks should work better with FTP.  To create a symlink, us the ln command with the -s switch.
For example. let's say you have a path /Volumes/FTP/root/ which is where all users land when logging in.  Then you have your six drives mounted at /Volumes/Drive1, /Volumes/Drive2, etc.  Assuming you are sharing a folder called data on each of the drives (sharing the entire drive is usually not a good idea as there is a lot of hidden content on the root of the drives), your commands would look like this:
    ln -s /Volumes/Drive1/data /Volumes/FTP/root/Drive1
    ln -s /Volumes/Drive2/data /Volumes/FTP/root/Drive2
    etc
The syntax is ln (link) -s (symlink) /Volumes/Drive1/data (source file or folder) /Volumes/FTP/root/Drive1 (path to link).
I've not tested this but symlinks should work.  Run a man ftpd.conf to review your options and settings.

  • AD Users auth Ok but cannot log into AFP Home dirs

    Hello,
I have a problem that has been driving me nuts for around 6 weeks so wondering if someone can help me out.
I have an XServe that has been bound to the AD Server. This server holds the users only. The Xserve is connected to an XRAID. I recently rebuilt The XRAID to be a 0+1 (2 stripes, 1 mirroring the 2nd). I then configured the Home Dirs on the Xserve to reside on the XRAID. I created a folder called UserHomes and then shared this using AFP and SMB. I removed guest access for both protocols. I Added the AD users groups to the ACLs to allow them access. I added the AD admin with full control rights to all folders, and the AD Staff group with read only access to that folder only.
I then used a script that would use dscl to extract the AD users into a list, created a folder for their Home dir, copied the Default template into their home dirs and then chowned the homedir to the AD user and chmodded the homedir 700.
Now, when i try to log in as an AD user, they get authenticated correctly as would be expected but then the login window disappears and the user is left with the desktop picture and a spinning coloured ball. This stays like this until the machine is hard-reset or the loginwindow is quit remotely.
I have tried using mobile accounts for the same user and this results in the user logging in, synching and even having full access to their home dir from the doc as well as all shares available to them, showing that kerberos seems to be working. But this started to do the same as full network accounts as well, ie the spinning ball after login.
I have rebuilt the OD server, the clients and even swapped out the switches and cabling. Same result. I have run tcpdump which seems to suggest things are as they should be (although i don't really know what i am looking for) But AFP logs show the client opening and closing forks but never logging in).
    DNS is resolving successfully also.
Any ideas on what could be the problem

I synchronize the clocks of both the OS X Server and OS X Client with the AD Server. The user gets authenticated fine and the login window disappears, but thats as far as it gets the users then starts to load (open and close forks according to the AFP Log) their profile but it never turns up. No dock, no Finder. I can see that it is trying to load though because if i manage the wallpaper setting using WGM, the background of the logging in user changes. Just doesn't do anything else
