FTP server - hide share points?

10.5 Server, relatively minor issue.
FTP is set up, with the intent of having a single FTP repository for outside folks to access. I've set up a local user account with no home folder. FTP Server setting is "Home directory only."
When the FTP user logs in, they go to the proper directory (the FTP root), with full access to that directory.
The minor issue is that the FTP user see the names of (as folders) for other server shares. They can't access those shares so it's not the end of the world ("permission denied"). It however makes me nervous that some other unintended change should allow users into the other shares. I'd rather not show them at all.
It appears the server daemon adds these aliases/hard links to the FTP directory itself. I can delete them, but they're recreated by the server.
I gave the ftp user a home directory matching the FTP root, and I get the same results.
What I'd like is a drop into the FTP root, without even seeing the existence of other shares.
Any way to do this?
Thanks!

Hi,
Did you guys find out a way to do this under 10.5.x...?
I presume that we need to manipulate the files here:
/Library/ftpserver/Configuration
I guess there is some "mask" or way to do this.
I'm using PureFTP on my other Xserve, running 10.4.x, ... however the pain there is that you have to manually create user/pass for each user. At least this way you don't have to worry about setting up extra stuff.
I'd also like a way to be able to setup my Admin FTP account, so that it has "/" root access, even though the default is to show them only their Home Folders.
Anyone cracked this..?
Cheers,
Steve

Windows Server is Windows, but the Server OS. SharePoint runs on top of supported Windows Servers editions (see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262485.aspx).
SharePoint Server is 64-bit only (trial:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35491).
You will need the capability to run 64bit VMs. Minimum recommended all-in-one VM for SharePoint is to allocate 24GB of RAM, but you can get away with as little as 12GB (I wouldn't go below that). Because of this, it generally rules out 32bit OSes as a virtual
    machine host.

  • How do I connect a user account to a server's share points when the user is on the same Mac as the Lion Server?

I've installed and configured Lion Server on an old iMac that suddenly became available when I upgraded to a new iMac. I've got a share point on there. It was easy. Love it.
My bookkeeper comes into my office once a week and works on that iMac. He already has a regular user account set up there. He needs to access the sharepoint that is on that iMac he's using, and which is now running Lion Server. But I can't see the server from his account, and I can't manually connect to it - I get an error to connect locally on the Mac instead.
But I can't navigate to the point in the user account that I'm using as a file serving account to get him access to the directory I'm sharing.
So, in short, how does a local user on an iMac running Lion Server connect to the server's sharepoints?

All drives are now listed under volumes both local and remote.
I would try the fullpath using /Volumes/....
or post the file paths your trying
are you trying the goto menu?

  • Lion server and Share Points

My company just got a new iomega SAN and I wanted to test it on a lion server. So I setup lion server on a mac pro and configured the SAN to the switch. The problem is that when I go to server app, File sharing & click + to add a share point Im not able to add the shares from the SAN, only the Macintosh HD shows.
But when I switch to my snow leopard server I can add the SAN shares with no problem. Does anybody know how I can get this working with lion server?

You should check OS X logs and Windows client logs to have a better understanding of what happened.

  • Use unused server as share point server after move databases to new server

    HI,
we have a single server share point farm (ServerApp01) for Intranet and it connects to a SQL SERVER 2008 R2 database server (Server02),
and now  we moved all sharepoint databases and content dbs to new sql server in different server (ServerSQLNew).
using sqlalias we point to new SQLSERVER 2012 Instance in this new server.
    - now the old sql server (Server02), is not in the sharepoint  farm
    - now can i add this server in intranet farm and  use this old server (Server02) as wfe server ?
here my doubt is  when i open cliconfg.exe i saw that sharepoint server pointing to this old server name (Server02),
after i will join this server to existing farm is any issues?
    adil

    hi
i already turned off sql server instance in old sql server in my case in Server02.
    In share
point Server (ServerApp01) i opened cliconfg.exe and add sqlaliases to point to new sql server.
If i rename  server02 server or rebuild
the server with a clean OS install  still  Sharepoint Farm works right?
below is the scenario of sqlalias in sharepointserver (serverapp01)

  • Panther server and share points on separate internal drives

I'm using an old Graphite G4 with OS 10.3 server. I've installed the system on a small drive, and want to set up share points on a raided pair of larger internal drives, but have not been able to find the way to do it, as server admin doesn't see the raid. Surely this can't be that unusual a setup...
    Clues?

IIRC, in 10.3 you use Workgroup Manager to designate share points
It's been a while, but from memory you open Workgroup Manager, connect to the server, then click the 'sharing' icon in the top bar. From here you can choose any directory on the system and setup the sharing rules.

  • FTP share point setup

ok..I am running sever 10.3 and I am trying to setp share points, I have spent the last few days searching this board and have not found the answer I need, maybe I missed it. I need to setup the server to allow ftp to certain share points based off of the login username and password, when I test the user names on the local network I see only what I have specified that user to see, when I log in threw an ftp program I see the entire root folder, though the root folder is not one of the share points. The boss feels we should not have to purchase a 3rd part ftp program to do this. How do I get the accounts to do via ftp app what they are doing via local network?

I logged into the FTP share on my Mac, and even through logged in using the owner of the share, I can't move or create folders/documents. If I Get Info for the share on my Mac the permissions are set as ready only?
If you're looking at the FTP share in the Finder, that's how it is. The Finder does not support read-write FTP, only read-only.
As for the Windows users not getting any response, that seems weird to me. Worst case they should get an access denied message. If they are not getting any response at all then I'm guessing the URL is correct - either that or Windows doesn't support authenticated FTP.
If this is a LAN network there really is no need (or even reason) to use FTP at all. AFP is far preferable for Mac clients, and SMB for Windows clients.

  • FTP showing empty shares.

    Hello All.
Im sharing a folder (only as FTP not as SMB or AFP) and setting POSIX for owner 'name' to Read Only, a group 'ftpadmin' to Read & Write (so they can add files) and others to None. ACL is set to 'name' Read Only and 'ftpadmin' Full Control.
When i start the service i can log in (off site) but only get a blank folder with none of the files within.
    Any ideas?

No a folder/share called 'user1' is where i am aiming, not 'test'. I no longer see 'that' test folder although ive been messing and deleted all the shortcuts in /Lib/FTPServer/FTProot
So you have the ftp daemon configured for "FTP Root and Share Points"?
No idea by what you mean 'exporting the parent directory'
"Exporting" is slang for how a server makes a file share visible; it's what's underneath all this "shares" stuff. It's a term that's particularly common with NFS shares, and less common with the other sorts of shares.
and SFTP doesnt seem to connect.
sftp requires the same port as ssh. If you can ssh into the box, you should be able to get sftp going. (Server Admin, select the server, and it (ssh) is enabled on the "general" page.)
One thing i have noticed is that the hard drive that the FTP shares are on (its a separate drive) has funny ownerships as follows:
(single head) 'admin account (Me)' - Read & Write
(two heads) 'staff group' - Custom
(single head) 'user2' - Read only
(two heads) 'staff group' - Read & Write
(three heads) 'everyone' - No Access
From that Get Info stuff, one head is the user/owner access, two heads is the group access, and three heads is the other/everybody-else access. I'd have to have a look at the custom stuff for staff to see if that's got the access blocked, but given you have access and anybody configured in the Staff group should be able to access the files involved so long as they're in a share served by ftp.
I usually drop down to the bash shell and have a look at the protection masks and the ownerships. Somewhat perversely, the Get Info stuff can be confusing (to me).
Does the username you're logging into here with ftp have access to the files and shares involved? That's the first test. Try accessing the file(s) involved without having ftp involved.
That would need to be "you" or folks in the staff group.
Anything interesting in the ftp logs?
i believe this has been propagated across the drive.
How do i default this back to a standard set?
Standard set? (I'm not sure that such a construct exists.) As for how I examine and change the ownerships, I use the Unix commands ls, chmod and chown:
    ls -alR fileordir
    sudo chown -R owner:group fileordir
    sudo chmod -R u=rwx,go= fileordir
The first (ls) displays the ownerships and access masks starting at the specified file or directory. The second (chown) sets the owner and group, and the second sets the file to be accessible only to the owner. Here's an example of setting the ownerships (to mine, and with a group setting of Staff), and setting the access rights mask to owner and group (staff) to full access.
    $ sudo chown MrHoffman:staff ~/x.pdf
    $ sudo chmod gu=rwx,o=r ~/x.pdf
To change everything starting at the specified directory and downward (recursive) I use:
    sudo chown -R owner:group fileordir
    sudo chmod -R u=rwx,go= fileordir
But you'll need to figure out what the accessing user is before you can be certain if the access is permitted or denied to the specified files and directories.

  • ALSB 3.0:  Unable to retrieve files from Novell FTP Server

I have written several ALSB proxy services that retrieve data from Unix FTP servers. This works great and I haven't experienced any major issues. However, I now have to write a service that monitors a directory on a Novell FTP server. The same exact code works great pointed against a unix ftp server, but when pointed against the Novell FTP server, the proxy service never finds any files to process even though I have manually connected to that ftp server using the same id/password and have been able to see the files.
All the proxy is supposed to do is poll for files and copy them to the ALSB server for processing. Very very simplistic and works great against a Unix ftp server.
I turned on the transport debug option and this is all that shows:
<Ftp Client created and connected successfully for '+my_server+:21 for user:+myuserid+>
    <+FileWorkPartitioningAgent.execute()>
    <Returning 0 tasks.>
    <-FileWorkPartitioningAgent.execute()>
We ran a packet trace on the server and we see the following commands being executed:
    User myuserid
    mypassword
    SYST
    TYPE i
    PASV
    list .
    TYPE i
    PASV
    list .
    quit
The files are in the "landing" directory for the user, so I am certain that it isn't a pathing issue. I'm just running out of ideas.
    Some questions I have are:
    1. has anyone experienced/resolved this issue before?
    2. is there any way to do custom configuration of the ftp client (disable the PASV aka passive mode, enable debugging, etc) used by the FTP transport?
    3. Could the FTP Transport not like the format of the list results from the Novell FTP server?
If anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.
    Thanks!

    Hi Iccarus
I realise its been quite a while since you wrote this thread but, in my desperation, I hoped you might have made some progress on this. I too am having almost identical issues:
    1. Can get/put files via ALSB ftp from/to unix or microsoft ftp server
    2. Can put files via ALSB ftp to the problem ftp server (not sure of its flavour atm)
    3. Can get/put files from the command line from/to the problem ftp server
    4. Cant get files via ALSB ftp from the problem server
The commands which were executed at the problem server are very similar to those you found:
    successful login
    ls
    ls
    quit
Any insights would be greatly appreciated

  • Share file SBS2011 share point

    Hello
We have an SBS2011 server with share point unfortualty I wasn't involved in the setup and configuration.
We would like to give out engineers access to a Excel file on the server on the tablets so that can see what jobs they have for the week.

Without knowing anything about the tablets or the versions of Android OS, I don't know.  Can these tablets open an excel spreadsheet... for example do they have Excel viewer or an Excel compatible program installed?
Next they would have to be able to connect to the SBS server via RWA, then to the SharePoint site "Company Web" and navigate to the stored file.  You should probably test that with a standard remote computer.
Perhaps a web based OS neutral calendar would be a better solution, although if you need to list hundreds of items that would become cumbersome.  SkyDrive, now called OneDrive might work if the spreadsheet was in a format that both Windows and Android
    machines could open.

  • Folders Not Showing in Server Admin AFP Share Point?

    Hello all,
My problem is I can make a folder in Server Admin under AFP Share Point, But the Folder wont actually be made on the HD.
Under Server Admin AFP Share Point it will tell me that it doesn't exist?
So I thought I'll go to that point on the HD and make the folder then set the permissions to it... nope I can make the folder I can see it in finder and in terminal, But not in Server Admin AFP Share Point.
I have never seen this before any help is greatly welcomed.

    Hi Kristoffer,
I have seen an attribute for folder object which could control SharePoint folder hide or show in webdav explorer view, you can use PowerShell to output the problematic folder property, see if it the case, then use the PowerShell code to set it's property
with blank value to make it show in explorer view,
Use the PowerShell to get the folder object and then check the property value with this code line $folder.Properties["vti_winfileattribs"]
#folder can be site, library level and folder level
    $folder = (Get-SPWeb http://sp).Folders["shared documents"].SubFolders["folder1"]
    #hide folder
    $folder.Properties["vti_winfileattribs"]="00000016"
    #show folder
    ####$folder.Properties["vti_winfileattribs"]=""
    $folder.Update()

  • FTP root & share points - how can I disable the latter?

I'm new to the Mac world and I'm in the process of configuring a Mac OS X server to run Contribute 3.
The server will be used to host a single site and the FTP is working now.
Question is, how can share points be disabled?
In the FTP root (libary/webserver/documents/) the following 3 files always get created automatically (I've tried deleting them as root):
    Groups
    Public
    Users
Is there a way to disable them? I was thinking of placing the website one folder away from the ftp root, but that could make things too complicated for users.
    Please advise!

    Anyone?
I removed the share points in the Workgroup Manager but they still show up when I ftp into the server (set to ftp root & share points).
Does anyone know how to get rid of them permanently?
If that is all it should take, please post... The system has been unable to save all settings as an account was deleted and the OS placed certain folders into the "unkown" ownership which is the topic in another thread:

  • FTP - Share Points Disapearing

On our server I've setup FTP access to certain groups. One being a public group - only access to one directory (public ftp) and another group which has access to all share points. Permissions are set using ACLs for both groups to their respective directories.
So now when a user logs in that has access to all share points, we don't see all the share points anymore we only see the public share point. If I turn off FTP as a protocol for all the share points - all the aliases show up. Turn on the protocol they disappear.
    Any ideas insight?

Ok, solved. It was simply a permissions issue with the symbolic links. I assumed that since the server automatically generated these when you turn on FTP sharing that it would grant read access for everyone.
Well I was mistaken - had to update the permissions on the links to allow everyone read access. They now show up and users can browse the directories that they have permission to.

  • 10.5.2 FTP Server- get rid of aliases to AFP/SMB shares?

    Hi all,
I'd like to open up exactly one folder on my Xserve to outside FTP, from one account. That's easy to do with SACLs, and Server Admin: FTP Settings: Advanced: "Home Directory Only", and defining the FTP root as that one folder.
The problem is that this folder also gets populated with aliases to the AFP/SMB shares on this server. They don't do anything, they don't connect to anything, but yet, they also have no business being there, and I want them gone.
How can I have my FTP root not have these unwanted links?
This is exactly the issue brought up in the archived thread here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5859326&#5859326

Even if you delete the symlinks, they come back the next time a user logs into the server via FTP
    SO...
    Heres how I did it...
You gotta have a user that's designed to access your site!
Think about it... When you log into an FTP site, do you log in with a legitimate user name that has gui access to that computer? Make sure your users know to log in with an FTP user account that we create here.
First, I created a Group called FTP
Then I created a user named commweb (short for community web) with a home folder located in /Library/WebServer/Documents/CommunityHome
So in your server config, the home folder settings for my user are:
Mac OS X Server/Share Point URL:
    afp://******.****.com/Library/WebServer/Documents
    Path to Home Folder:
    CommunityHome
    Full Path:
    /Network/Servers/****.***.com/Library/WebServer/Documents/CommunityHome
Then I made commweb a member of the group "FTP"
This is where it gets tricky.
I put the website in a folder IN my commweb's home folder. I called it CommunitySite.
(The site location is /Library/WebServer/Documents/CommunityHome/CommunitySite +you have to specify that in the web server settings+)
I then "Shared" the commweb home folder (/Library/WebServer/Documents/CommunityHome) making sure to give commweb read and write permission.
Now.... We wanna deny complete access to all the sharepoints to ANYONE in the FTP group. (Just select 'deny' - Read and write on the rest of the sharepoints) That way the ftp group can't have access to the folders even if they could see them.
So now, when my commweb user logs in, I make sure that the Initial Path is CommunitySite. Note that you have to specify it in the syntax when logging in through the terminal. For instance the command would be:
    ftp commweb@****.***.com/CommunitySite
    267,899 steps, but it works.

  • How to configure SharePoint HNSC with a reverse proxy server so that HNSC Share Point URLs are not exposed to end users.

Could you please let me know how SharePoint HNSC can be configured with a reverse proxy server so that HNSC Share Point URLs are not exposed to end users.
In normal path based site collections/web applications, reverse proxy configuration can be done using alternate access mappings with  Public URL = "proxy URL", internal = "HNSC Share Point URL" so that share point sends response back
to Public URL = "proxy URL".
In Host Named Site Collections,  alternate access mappings  are not supported. Each HNSC is designed to have only one URL in each zone. Zone is one of the five zones(Default,Intranet,Internet,Custom,Extranet) with each of which only one alternate
URL is associated.  This is what we are able to get using power shell command "Set-SPSiteUrl", but this will not help us to get the response back to proxy URL after a request sent to share point because we could not find any mechanism in share
point HNSC to respond  to a different URL(proxy URL). Consequently, Share Point URLs are exposed to  external users.
Below share point article in MSDN blog is symmetrical to what we are observing with Share Point 2013 and Proxy Server. It mentions that internal HNSC URLs can’t be hidden using any proxy server. If  hiding the internal Share Point URLS is a requirement,
it suggests to use a web application instead of host named site collections.
Though I’m also observing the same behavior with Share Point 2013 HNSC, Could you please confirm my understanding is correct.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/kaevans/archive/2012/03/27/what-every-sharepoint-admin-needs-to-know-about-host-named-site-collections.aspx
    Excerpt from above article-
"Host Named Site Collections Only Use One Host Name
Continuing on the discussion on AAMs and host named site collections, you cannot use multiple host names to address a site collection in SharePoint 2010. Because host-named site collections have a single URL, they do not support alternate access mappings and
are always considered to be in the Default zone.  This is important if you are using a reverse proxy to provide access to external users. Products like Unified Access Gateway 2010 allow external users to authenticate to your gateway and access a site
as http://uag.sharepoint.com and forward the call to http://portal.sharepoint.com. Remember that URL rewriting is not permitted. Further, a site collection can only respond to one host name. This means if you are using a reverse proxy, it must forward the
calls to the same URL.  If your networking team has a policy against exposing internal URLs externally, you must instead use web applications and extend the web application using an alternate access mapping."<u5:p></u5:p>

    Hi Satish,
You are right that only one URL is allowed for each zone of the host-name site collections in both SharePoint 2010 and SharePoint 2013.
It is by design that each host-name site collection only support one URL for each zone.
The article below is about RTM version of SharePoint, and it is the same for SharePoint 2013 with the latest CU.
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2826457
So to make the URL of HNSC not exposed to external users is not supported, you need to use path-based sites instead.
    Best regards.
