FTP setup folder share

Hello
I have followed the guide to setting up FTP i noticed under windows sharing there is are different fields
*name description type and status*
I have enabled FTP and windows sharing however the fields are not present I want to get these working so that I can start using the FTP server.
port forwarding have been enabled and I am able to connect so I'm guessing the folders just need to be shared.

Quick update
I have wiped all my data and started to build the nas back up from scratch.
I am still having the same problem.
This is just a thought both of my hard drives are new they were manufactured in 2009.
could this be causing my issue the drives are too new??
the other media hub i purchased cam with a drive dated 2006 which seems to work fine.
Can someone point me in the right direction.
I am getting quite annoyed with this product now as any support for it seems to be in this forum and linksys have a paid technical support number for this product.
The firmware seems very buggy

  • FTP setup problem

Hi going mad trying to get FTP to work
    Setup as follows;
    Router
created service FTP for ports 20…21 and with port forwarding to the server IPaddress
    Workgroup Manager
    i) created a sharepoint called FTP (with subfolder FTPuser)
    ii) created a user "FTPuser"
iii) set home to the sharepoint
iv) created a group FTPgroup (which FTPuser and myself as administrator is part of)
    v) set permissions for the sharepoint owner RW-me, group RW FTPgroup, Everyone none
    Server Admin
    i) set - Authenticated users see "home directory with sharepoints"
FTP root is left at default location
    Finder
    connect to server ftp://FTPuser:password@serverIPaddress
Tries to connect with error message
"operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (errror-50)
If I change the FTP settings …user to see"FTP root and share points" I get an error that "could not connect to server because eiher the name or password is incorrect" BTW that has been check a million times.
Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated
    cheers

    Found the solution
Abandon OSX server FTp service and use the shareware Pure FTPd manager.
Works great and you only need one new user with all sites managed virtually through that user.

  • FTP showing empty shares.

    Hello All.
Im sharing a folder (only as FTP not as SMB or AFP) and setting POSIX for owner 'name' to Read Only, a group 'ftpadmin' to Read & Write (so they can add files) and others to None. ACL is set to 'name' Read Only and 'ftpadmin' Full Control.
When i start the service i can log in (off site) but only get a blank folder with none of the files within.
    Any ideas?

No a folder/share called 'user1' is where i am aiming, not 'test'. I no longer see 'that' test folder although ive been messing and deleted all the shortcuts in /Lib/FTPServer/FTProot
So you have the ftp daemon configured for "FTP Root and Share Points"?
No idea by what you mean 'exporting the parent directory'
"Exporting" is slang for how a server makes a file share visible; it's what's underneath all this "shares" stuff. It's a term that's particularly common with NFS shares, and less common with the other sorts of shares.
and SFTP doesnt seem to connect.
sftp requires the same port as ssh. If you can ssh into the box, you should be able to get sftp going. (Server Admin, select the server, and it (ssh) is enabled on the "general" page.)
One thing i have noticed is that the hard drive that the FTP shares are on (its a separate drive) has funny ownerships as follows:
(single head) 'admin account (Me)' - Read & Write
(two heads) 'staff group' - Custom
(single head) 'user2' - Read only
(two heads) 'staff group' - Read & Write
(three heads) 'everyone' - No Access
From that Get Info stuff, one head is the user/owner access, two heads is the group access, and three heads is the other/everybody-else access. I'd have to have a look at the custom stuff for staff to see if that's got the access blocked, but given you have access and anybody configured in the Staff group should be able to access the files involved so long as they're in a share served by ftp.
I usually drop down to the bash shell and have a look at the protection masks and the ownerships. Somewhat perversely, the Get Info stuff can be confusing (to me).
Does the username you're logging into here with ftp have access to the files and shares involved? That's the first test. Try accessing the file(s) involved without having ftp involved.
That would need to be "you" or folks in the staff group.
Anything interesting in the ftp logs?
i believe this has been propagated across the drive.
How do i default this back to a standard set?
Standard set? (I'm not sure that such a construct exists.) As for how I examine and change the ownerships, I use the Unix commands ls, chmod and chown:
    ls -alR fileordir
    sudo chown -R owner:group fileordir
    sudo chmod -R u=rwx,go= fileordir
The first (ls) displays the ownerships and access masks starting at the specified file or directory. The second (chown) sets the owner and group, and the second sets the file to be accessible only to the owner. Here's an example of setting the ownerships (to mine, and with a group setting of Staff), and setting the access rights mask to owner and group (staff) to full access.
    $ sudo chown MrHoffman:staff ~/x.pdf
    $ sudo chmod gu=rwx,o=r ~/x.pdf
To change everything starting at the specified directory and downward (recursive) I use:
    sudo chown -R owner:group fileordir
    sudo chmod -R u=rwx,go= fileordir
But you'll need to figure out what the accessing user is before you can be certain if the access is permitted or denied to the specified files and directories.

  • Saving to smb Folder Share

With major help from Jacques Rioux, I created this script to map a Windows 2008 folder share for our students using our new MacBooks:
display dialog "Please enter your school user name" default answer ""
set the user_name to the text returned of the result
display dialog "Please enter your school password" default answer "" with hidden answer
set pass_word to the text returned of the result
    set server_name to "servername"
    mount volume "smb://" & user_name & ":" & pass_word & "@" & server_name & "/" & user_name
The script works perfectly - each student's files are visible to them after they have executed the script; however, when a student tries to save to the smb folder share from an application (Word), the smb folder share created on the desktop is not visible.  (The students are logging into the Macs with a generic AD username and then authenticating to their folder share using the script).
Curiously, if I create a alias to the smb folder share in the document folder, the user can browse from Save As and save fine to the shortcut.  I can also save a doc to the Documents folder and drag it to the smb folder share, and it will transfer with no problem.  I have also noticed that, occasionly, the smb folder share is the target of Save As from Word, but I cannot determine why that might be the case.  Ideally, that would happen every time the script is run.
The downside of creating an alias of the smb folder share in the Documents folder is that it does not seem to be deleted when the smb folder share is ejected.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    CJ

Still have not found a solution-
    Any thoughts??

  • Correct FTP setup

I've been struggling with ftp setup on my os x server. I have it running but not how i want it. I want anyone to be able to download from the ftp server but not upload to it and i dont want people to require a username or password to access the ftp site. I cant see any settings options on the ftp tab of the server app. Is there some command line or am i missing something obvious???

Can you offer downloads of the files via http?  That might be easier.

  • SAP CE Installation in Distributed Mode without SAPMNT Folder Share

    Hello
We are installing NW CE 7.1 in Production Environment in Distributed Mode - App Server on one host and DB Server on another host.
The App and DB server OS are Windows Server 2008 R2 and DB is Oracle 11g. We have successfully installed SCS on the app server and now installing DB Server Instance on the DB Host. While installing the same, the SAP Installtion asks for path of SAPMNT.
Our Network Team has informed that due to security reasons, in production data center they will not be able to allow sharing of folder from App Server. They have asked us to check if there is any other way of completing our installation without actually creating folder share on App Server.
We would like to know whether the sharing can be taken out of the server component and the same can be enabled on the different machine and this can be given the UNC path for accessing the same.
Kindly confirm if this is possible and supported by SAP. Also let us know if there are some other supported options regarding the same.
    Regards,
    Shubham

    Hi Sunny,
Thanks a lot for your response. So does it mean I can copy the usr/sap folder to the DB Server and give the path from the same DB server to complete the install? Does this path need to be provided in UNC format or can be using local drive path
Also can I do the same for Additional App Server that we can install. Kindly confirm.
    Regards,
    Shubham

  • Should Clients be able to access Wsuscontent folder share?

I was testing some MDT options for installing approved updates during the install task. One of the steps was to map to the WSUSContent folder on our wsus sever. Access was blocked by our firewall and the shares were not configured.
That got me thinking. Do clients need to be able to access this folder share to download the updates from WSUS? Are my clients currently downloading from MS based upon the approvals?

Do clients need to be able to access this folder share to download the updates from WSUS?
Clients DO NOT download from the share directly; the download is done via an HTTP GET file transfer call to http://wsusServer/Content/pathNameToFile.

  • FTP root folder troubles

I'm a server newby here and need a little help. I have Snow Leopard server running on a Mac Mini, trying to get FTP up and running. Some how, while chasing down several gremlins, the folder designated as the FTP root folder was deleted and now I can't get FTP to relaunch in the Server Admin.
    Thanks

I don't think you can get the built-in server to act differently based on the hostname the user accessed via - there's nothing in the FTP connection that indicates how they got to your server (unlike a HTTP request which does include the hostname of the URL).
So typically this is done by creating usernames in each domain (e.g. [email protected], [email protected]) which are used as the FTP login. If you take that approach then you can send people to different locations when they log in - you'll just need to set each account accordingly.
The alternative is to use a different server such as CrushFTP which can run multiple services on different IP address/ports, each of which has its own set of accounts, sharepoints, etc. In this way user 'bob' can log in and depending on which address he uses, he gets different content (assuming 'bob' was a valid account in both domains.

  • Windows DFS folder share between networks

Does anyone know if the below is possible?
Say you had 2 totally separate local networks (e.g. no connection to eachother). If you had a server with 2 nic's, 1 on each network, could you setup a share on that server which would allow access from 1 network to the other via the server share?
I thought it might be possible using DFS but it doesn't work.

  • FTP Setup (using samba share on another server)

    A hypothetical question.
First you need to know I would be setting up the ftp on a mounted drive (storage server share). The users are chrooted to their home directories in /ftp/users/username using the option in vsftpd.conf. Now, if I were to setup a user to have ftp access and shell access, is the following possible?
Their home folders are located in /ftp/users/username. Being that it is a mounted folder (I can't change individual directory and file permissions), is it possible to prevent each user from accessing anything in the whole ftp directory while logged into the computer with shell?

The way you do what you are describing is to keep the Account information in the same place it is now, but change the pointer to a User's (or collection of Users) Home Folder.
    To transition to that:
    • decide where the User's new Home will be.
    • create a new folder for that user at the new location.
    • copy the user's files to the new location.
    • change the home pointer in their account record.

  • EA6500 - unable to setup Folder Access / FTP Server / Media Server functions

I purchased the EA6500 a few days ago, and when I'm connected to Cisco Connect Cloud I am unable to select Folder Access / FTP Server / Media Server.  I click them and nothing happens.
Also, the Cisco light on the router keeps blinking.  I'm googling to find out how to troubleshoot these situations but I'm having no luck.
I appreciate any help with these situations.

    DoublePromo wrote:
I contacted customer service, and they helped me troubleshoot.  The description of the router and it's capabilites appears misleading to me - "Folder Access" - I thought it gave one the capability to file share between different computers that are on the same network.  It's only for files that are on a USB stick that's connected to the router.  Oh well.  Good thing I still have Network Magic Pro.
In addition to this, storage functionality on the router doesn't need any software for it to work. The router should be able to detect the external drive when connected and get it configured on the router's interface unlike network magic which you've mentioned where the program must be installed to all computers in the network for it to be able to see all devices present in the network and share files and folders through it.

  • FTP server - hide share points?

    10.5 Server, relatively minor issue.
FTP is set up, with the intent of having a single FTP repository for outside folks to access. I've set up a local user account with no home folder. FTP Server setting is "Home directory only."
When the FTP user logs in, they go to the proper directory (the FTP root), with full access to that directory.
The minor issue is that the FTP user see the names of (as folders) for other server shares. They can't access those shares so it's not the end of the world ("permission denied"). It however makes me nervous that some other unintended change should allow users into the other shares. I'd rather not show them at all.
It appears the server daemon adds these aliases/hard links to the FTP directory itself. I can delete them, but they're recreated by the server.
I gave the ftp user a home directory matching the FTP root, and I get the same results.
What I'd like is a drop into the FTP root, without even seeing the existence of other shares.
    Any way to do this?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Did you guys find out a way to do this under 10.5.x...?
I presume that we need to manipulate the files here:
    /Library/ftpserver/Configuration
I guess there is some "mask" or way to do this.
I'm using PureFTP on my other Xserve, running 10.4.x, ... however the pain there is that you have to manually create user/pass for each user. At least this way you don't have to worry about setting up extra stuff.
I'd also like a way to be able to setup my Admin FTP account, so that it has "/" root access, even though the default is to show them only their Home Folders.
    Anyone cracked this..?
    Cheers,
    Steve

  • How do I use a specific host directory in the ftp setup?

I am reestablishing links in CS4 to my websites after an upgrade from Vista to 7.
I use Go Daddy and the subdirectory capability. I had a difficult time setting up the ftp connection and saw in another posting that the Host directory should be left blank. This indeed worked. The problem is that I want to control access of different designers to different websites that are contained in one hosting account. When I use the correct Host directory in the Site Definition dialogue box as I did with my setup on Vista, I get the error message:
"An FTP error occurred - cannot open remote folder [FileName]/. Access denied. The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem."
However, the file does exist. I have tried various uses of forward slashes, in front, in back, and both, without success. I'm sure there is an answer.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mark

Can you verify that your user account has access to those other accounts?  Is this a reseller account where you have accounts under your own or is this a dedicated box or VPS where the accounts can be in different directories?  Is this a Windows or Linux box
There's a few things that could be going on, but if it ends up being a permission issue Godaddy will be the only ones who can help with that.  But just an example of a path on a Unix/Linux environment, "public_html/".  There is no leading slash but there is a trailing slash in the path.  If you are connecting to a Windows server it could be slightly different, but my only experience with Windows is in a networked/VPN environment so if that is your case I am sure someone else here can help you out.

  • Ftp setup question

sorry if this a repeat question, but i'm stumped. i've set up
a number of sites previously, and never had a problem using the ftp
with dw. my typical setup has been
    ftp host: ftp.mysite.com
    host directory: public_html/
    username
    password
    never a problem.
now i'm trying to set up a site on a new dedicated server
host and these same setting don't work. as an aside, i'm using
cpanel and when i set up the ftp user i noticed the directory is
/home/wwwcoun/public_html/, so i alternated this with a simple
public_html/ but it didn't work. suggestions please. thanks.
    mike

    Try -
    FTP Host - www.mysite.com
    Host directory - BLANK
Can you connect? If you can, tell me what FOLDER names you
    see on the
    remote folder list.
