FTP to remote server works, SMB does not

Hi folks, hope you can help.
I have a Mac Mini at home, connected to the internet via an Airport Extreme, which acts as a file server. It has a static WAN IP. Our business has an overseas office, with a PC running Windows XP, which needs access to the Home folder of 'User' on the Mac Mini.
I have configured port forwarding on the Airport Extreme to allow screen sharing and file sharing on the Mac Mini. In System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing > Options, all three AFP, FTP and SMB protocols have been selected, with User's checkbox ticked to allow access. User's Home folder is not on the Shared Folders list however - don't think this is necessary.
To test, I turn on my Macbook and connect to the same Airport Extreme wireless network as the Mac Mini. Using Command-K (Connect to Server), I can type in afp://Username:Password@WAN IP/User and successfully connect User's Home folder.
Using VMware Fusion on the same machine, I boot up Windows XP. I go to My Computer > Tools > Map Network Drive. I type in \ \WAN IP\User" as the path and input the Username and Password in the required section. Again, this connects successfully.
I thought this was an adequate way to test whether remote access would work. However, I went to my local coffee shop and tried to dial into the server using their Wifi network, just to check, and this happened...
Using Command-K again, I was able to connect to the server using AFP. However, I was unable to connect to the server using SMB. Also, I cannot remember exactly, but I think FTP failed as well.
In Windows, using the same Map Network Drive function, it didn't work either. FTP also failed.
I really cannot work out why this happened. Firewall issue on the coffee shop's router perhaps? It was a pre-pay BT Openzone connection if this makes any difference? I just want to make sure the overseas office can connect successfully. Unfortunately there's nobody there to test it until I go there on Monday.
All help/ideas appreciated! Thanks a lot.

It is not secure to open afp, smb over the internet. I would suggest you use sftp only or invest in a vpn router.
To use sftp you only need to port forward tcp 22 to your mac from your router. Then goto you sharing preferences and enable remote login. However I would not give out the admin username and password to access your mac mini.
create a not admin account and use that account to share your files.
Then to login to the mac from a pc or another mac you need an sftp client. On the mac I use transmit.
Then your connection is encrypted and secure.

  • Connect to Server via SMB does not work under 10.5

Hi- I have a feeling that my account has to be reset server-side, but I'd enjoy some feedback. I still use a dual (1gHz) Quicksilver G4 which is solid as a rock and still adequate to my needs. Apart from an overall seeming sluggishness, I have a very serious problem: I am one of 7 Macs on a much larger Windows network and connecting to the various servers and directly to my Windows desktop using SMB has always worked great. Up until yesterday. After upgrading to 10.5 from 10.4.10, I couldn't get on to any of the servers, I checked the network setting and noted that they reverted to AFP. I enabled SMB and still can't get onto any of our network servers. I am, however, able to get into the Mac Public\Drop Box from the WIndows computer, but not vice-versa. I have already verified and repaired permissions, etc. Solutions, suggestions? Patch forthcoming?

Same problem with my Nokia 6650d, also after Ovi upgrade. Any hints?

  • I have 2 emai accounts which worked perfectly on iphone 4 but on iphone 5 my msn account wont let me reply to emails sent to that account, it leaves the message in my outbox saying recipient was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying

I have 2 email accounts which both worked perfectly well on my ipone 4 but since going over to iphone 5 my msn account will not allow me to reply to any emails. It places a message on my screen stating a copy has been placed in your Outbox. The recipient   @.com was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying. Any ideas on how I can sort this. Would it be worth deleting my MSN account ant putting re-inputting the details again?

Your email provider has blocked the standard mail port 25 for sending emails and is requiring a different port. This is to avoid mail relays that use mail clients to send spam. You need to find the port that is used by your provider for sending outgoing mail. Then change the settings in your email account on your phone to match the port. You will also have to provide some security credentials for the account.
You can also try deleting the email account from your iphone, and the adding the email account back as this will many times set the correct port for sending emails.
You could also do a Google search on the the settings for your device with your email provider. That will provide you with the proper settings.

  • Group Chat feature in Office Communications Server 2007 R2 does not work in Windows Server 2008 R2 domains

Hello to all, there are two confliting articles about this topic:
       1-
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/upgrade-domain-controllers-to-windows-server-2008-r2(v=ws.10).aspx#BKMK_Whatsnew : this one says that it does not work "The Group Chat feature in Office Communications Server 2007 R2 does not work in Windows
Server 2008 R2 domains". This article was updated in 2013.
       2-
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee692314(office.13).aspx: this other article says that it will function "Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Group Chat will function in a Windows Server 2008 R2 forest". This article was updated in
2010 and was refered by the first one.
What is the correct support position for Group Chat feature in Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 domains?
       Regards, EEOC.

    Hi,
I notice the following sentence in the link below “Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Group Chat will not function in a Windows Server 2008 R2 forest or when Group Chat member servers are joined to a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain.
We know of an issue with changes in Windows 2008 R2 that requires a Group Chat Client and Group Chat Admin Tools hotfix. The Group Chat Client and Group Chat Admin Tools hotfixes are currently scheduled for mid-April 2010.”
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/nexthop/archive/2010/11/06/supportability-for-office-communications-server-2007-r2-and-windows-server-2008-r2.aspx
So in my opinion, if you update to the latest version of Windows Server 2008 R2, OCS Server 2007 R2 and Group Chat Client, Group Chat Admin Tools to the latest version, it should work.
However, the best method for you is make a lab to test the problem firstly.

  • WRVS4400N Remote desktop on Vista does not work

I have a WRVS4400N and all firmware, software is up to date and current.  I can connect using remote desktop on a laptop with Windows XP Pro but cannot connect with a laptop using Vista Ultimate.  I have used the new Quick VPN connect software, but when I try and use the remote desktop connection, it does not connect.
Is there a setting that is different in vista than windows XP that I need to change on the laptop or is it someting in the firewall in the WRVS4400N?

if your RDP is already working on your windows XP computer then there are no settings that needs to be changed on the linksys router, you have to double check the settings of your RDP application on your vista computer, possible that it is using a different port number

  • SCVMM 2008 R2 - "The SQL Server service account does not have permission to access Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS)."

I know this question has been asked before, but never for R2, that I can tell, and the posted fixes aren't working. I have just installed SCVMM 2008 R2 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 server, using a remote SQL 2008 SP1 database. When I attempt to connect to SCVMM, I get the following error:
"The SQL Server service account does not have permission to access Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS).
Ensure that the SQL Server service is running under a domain account or a computer account that has permission to access AD DS. For more information, see "Some applications and APIs require access to authorization information on account objects" in the Microsoft Knowledge Base at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=121054.
    ID: 2607"
What I've seen online is that this is usually becuase the domain account SCVMM is running as does not have the proper permissions on the SQL database. Here's what I've confirmed:
    1) My SCVMM service account is a local admin on the SCVMM server
    2) My SCVMM service account is a dbowner on the SCVMM database in SQL
    3) My SQL service account is a dbowner on the SCVMM database in SQL
    4) My SQL service account is a domain user (even made it a domain admin, just in case, and it still "doesn't have access to AD DS," which is obviously untrue)
    5) Neither service account is locked out
Has anyone run in to this? It says in Technet that remote SQL 2008 is supported, as long as the SQL management studio is installed to the SCVMM server, and I installed and patched before I began the SCVMM installation. I just don't know what else to try - I have no errors in event logs, no issues during the installation itself...

That answer was very unhelpful fr33m4n. The individual mentions that they've received the error that points to the KB article. I currently receive the same error -- there seems to be no resolution. I've run the Microsoft VBS script to add TAUG to the WAAG
as suggested by 331951, and that made absolutely no difference.
    1) My SCVMM service account is a local admin on the SCVMM server
    2) My SCVMM service account is a dbowner on the SCVMM database in SQL
    3) My SQL service account is a dbowner on the SCVMM database in SQL
    4) My SQL service account is a domain user (even made it a domain admin, just in case, and it still
"doesn't have access to AD DS," which is obviously untrue)
The user is also a member of WAAG, the machines have delegated authority to each other. Is there any other solution?

When trying to send E-mail via AOL i get the message "rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying" I have checked settings as per answers to similar question

From which account does the email not send?  When sending from an account, the iPad will first try to use the aoutgoing server for that account.  If it can't it will try the other accounts listed.in the setting on the iPad for that account.  It soulds like the server for the account is not working and that the alternate server is resjecting the messag since it did not originate ffrom the account associated with that server,  That is to prevent sending spam.

Never had this problem before so not sure whats going on. Appreciate any help out there.

Sounds like there is something wrong with your SMTP server. Try going into Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>select the email account in question, go to the Outgoing server (SMTP) and check the settings. It may be you do not have a username and password in one of the areas. The phone may say optional in a couple, but it is usually mandatory. You can also try a reset on the device, hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. If neither of these work, then you will need to delete the account, then delete the SMTP server, then add the account back, ensuring you use your username and password everywhere, even when it says optional.

  • On my iPad, my outgoing email regularly replies that the email was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying.  WHat does that mean and how do I make the email go anyway?

on my iPad, my outgoing mail regularly replies that the email was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying. What does that mean and how can I make the emails go out?

    Try this.
Check your username and password in the outgoing mail server setting. Fill it in even of it says that it's optional.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>choose the email account>account name, tap on SMTP (under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' heading) and then tap on your Primary Server and try entering your email username and password and see if that works for you.

I can't send emails anymore. Lately out of nowhere, I couldn't dend any emails fom my Ipad. I receive a message saying: the recipient was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying.

Try going into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > select the account > account name , tap on SMTP (under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' heading) and then tap on your Primary Server and try entering your email account and password and see if it then works.

  • Rejected by the server...does not allow relaying

I have 3 Verizon Email accounts, when I try to send an email from my iPhone, I get the following message: "The recipient "[email protected]" was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying. The "[email protected]" is the account I am trying to send the email FROM on my iPhone.
I was able to send and receive my Verizon email on my previous cellphone; Samsung Omnia.

Okay, I solved my own problem with the help of a thread on another site. I am posting my findings here in the hope it may help someone else.
    1. Go to Settings
    2. Select "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"
    3. Select the email account with the problem (being rejected by the server...does not allow relaying)
    4. Scroll down to "Outgoing Mail Server"
    5. Select SMTP  (mine says "SMTP  outgoing.verizon.net", because my email account is with verizon)
    6. Under "Primary Server" select the server (again mine says "outgoing.verizon.net")
    7. Make sure Server is ON
    8. Make sure the User Name and Password are filled in (mine was Not filled in)
    9. Click "Done" in the upper right corner of the screen
    10. Now go back to the email account screen
    11. Click "Done" in the upper right corner of the screen
That's it, it worked for me and my email went out right away.
