FTTC in my Area

Hello i was wondering if i can get FTTC because up the road near my Cab has been dug up and looks like they are packing up now. Here is what it says on the ADSL checker thing.
Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 30th September 2012. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 46.3Mbps and upstream line speed of 8Mbps.

HI
Within an exchange area there will be some customers who can't get BT Infinity. There are several reasons why this could be the case:
Your phone line may be connected directly to the telephone exchange and not to a local street cabinet.
Your line may be too far from the local street cabinet to have a stable BT Infinity service.
Your local street cabinet may not be suitable for fibre optic cables.
We haven't yet got the council's planning permission to do the necessary work at your local street cabinet.
So, even though you may be within an enabled exchange area, it's possible that your particular line may not be able to have BT Infinity yet.
The availability checker at www.bt.com/infinity has the latest detail about what speed your line can provide.

  • Is it fttp or fttc for my area?

    Hi
I live in a rather large town but my house is fed off a smaller rural exchange some 3miles away. While the rest of the town gained FTTC through the commercial rolll-out ours was sadily missed. BDUK and Leicestershire County Council seem to be stepping in to fund the upgrade.
Large parts of our estate have Virgin but some 250 homes including mine cant get etither Virgin or a an ADSL connection much above 2-4mb/s.
Our exchange is due to be upgraded to fibre later this year and i decided to see if my line would producce any information as i believe that if the upgrade is circa 3 months away the BT Wholesale ADSL checker should include details? To cut that part of the story short it produced just the normal ADSL info and nothing about fibre.
I then decided to put the exchange, postcode and telephone number into SamKnows and this is where the confusion has arrisen.
"FTTC is not yet available in your area"
FTTP will be available in your area, but the precise date is unknown
Is this just SamKnows being unreliable or having an update or am i looking at FTTP in my area rather than FTTC or is it just to early to say?
    Thanks for your help
    Ben

    Hi
Your best source of information will be Superfast Leicestershire. If you go here http://www.superfastleicestershire.org.uk/contact-us/ there is a contact number and email addresses. They will be able to tell you excactly what you'll be getting and roughly when.

  • Mixed messages concerning BT Infinity in my area

I have outragously bad interent speeds which can only be described as unbareable. We can't do basic tasks online and as a business owner, it's extremely important that I'm connected to speedy and stable broadband service. My area however is unable to provide such a thing. For 3 years my local exchange has been pushed back to later dates over and over again on the now illusive rollout map and now that it has finaly been updated to support FTTC, I am unable to recieve Infinity. I have contacted BT Customer Care and have been told that my cibenet (BARRHEAD 34) hasn't been upgraded. To add insult to injury they have also said that they have no idea when this cabinet will be upgraded, if at all. So for 3 years I've been told over and over and over again that my exchange was waiting to be enabled and that I'd recieve Infinity when it got upgraded. Now that it has been upgraded I can't upgrade to infinity (Although openreach says my exchange is accepting orders)
So I'm wondering if it would be at all possible to at least find out when my cabinet will make the switch over to infinity. The lack of information is infuriating and it's getting to the stage where moving house in order to recieve modern day broadband is becoming a more attractive option.
If the dely for FTTC takes too long would it be at all possible to recieve FTTP? I'm not completey sure of how this system works but as the cable is coming directly to the home, it would bypass the copper exchange, correct?
Any information would be great and I appreciate that the mods aren't at fault here.

    Hi kennytnl,
The Openreach Superfast Fibre Broadband Scheme is being rolled out, done and managed by Openreach so BT Retail (a communication provider/ISP whom operates this forum) does not have much say as to when and if you will be able to get fibre broadband (FTTC or FTTP or equivalent) as that is up-to Openreach.
Your exchange maybe "Accepting Orders" for fibre broadband but your cabinet will also need to upgraded with a FTTC cabinet to allow customer connected to the pcp (cabinet) to get FTTC fibre broadband
Not all the cabinets in a fibre enabled exchange area will be upgraded, so some areas in that exchange area will be unable to get fibre broadband at this current time.
If there is no mention of WBC FTTC when checking the BT Wholesale Database then unfortunately it looks like your cabinet isn't currently in Openreach's fibre broadband rollout plan.
Click here to see what your looking for in the BT Wholesale Database
The Openreach Superfast Fibre Broadband rollout plans are still being added too.
So your cabinet may be upgraded in the future, though there is no public time scale on when that will be.
Please bear in mind that in some cases it may not be possible to provide FTTC broadband in areas due to:
    • Your line may be too far from the local street cabinet to have a stable FTTC broadband service such as BT Infinity service.
    • Your local street cabinet may not be suitable for fibre optic cables.
    • We haven't yet got the council's planning permission to do the necessary work at your local street cabinet.
    • Your home may not be suitable for fibre optic cables.
    • Your landlord may not have agreed to the fibre infrastructure being provided in your building (for example if you live in a flat).
    • There isn't a adequate power supply
    • Health and safety issues
    • No ducting or inadequate ducting
    • Not financially viable for Openreach to upgrade as part of the commercial fibre rollout
    plus lots more.
The build of the fibre broadband infrastructure in the area isn't always easy and can be very complex.
As to FTTP, this is only available in a few areas around the UK and requires a lot of work as a fibre cable will need to be installed from the exchange to the property.
In areas where the commercial Superfast-Openreach fibre broadband rollout will not be able to reach, your local council or govenment BDUK superfast broadband rollout scheme may be able to help. For more information on your BDUK superfast broadband rollout scheme, you will need to contact your council or government.
Unfortunately BT Retail (a communication provider/ISP who operates this forum) does not have much say as to when and if you will be able to get FTTC or FTTP/H based broadband such as BT Infinity.
You can register your interest for Fibre Broadband such as BT Infinity by going to http://www.superfast-cymru.com/where-and-when/register
You can keep checking the BT Wholesale Database and BT Infinity website for the most upto date information as these are updated regularly.

  • FTTP or FTTC Options ?? Rural location with new fi...

    Hi All,
I live out in the sticks and we have been limited to sub 2mbps for years and years. As part of the Rural Broadband project, Openreach have been installing fibre in the area for the last few months. It has been difficult to get any information on what they have been doing, but they seem to have been installing new ducting throughout the area, they also installed a new cabinet in the village, but it is not one of the the big green infinity cabinets.
Anyway....today they were working in my road. They have blown fibre all the way to the manhole outside my house - and I am the very furthest house from the exchange (3 miles) or the cabinet (1 mile). The manhole is about 10 feet from the boundary of my property.
I had a chat with one of the OpenReach engineers working and asked if they were installing the fibre for FTTP or FTTC. His reply was "both". He said that once the network goes live, we will have the option of ordering either FTTC via the existing copper back to the cabinet, or FTTP directly from the fibre outside the house.
So....does this sound right? Obviously, I am over the moon about the possibility of getting real high speed FTTP, but don't want to get my hopes up.
But on the FTTC option, the new cabinet that was installed in the village looks almost identical to one of the old copper ones. No venting and about the same size as a standard old" one. When this was installed prior to Christmas, I asked the engineers working on it what they were doing. They told me they were just installing a replacement copper cabinet as the base of the old one sat in water and (obviously) caused issues. I have also noticed new BT manholes popping up near to clusters of houses around the village, with new ducting runs from them to the older manholes. Are these likely to be fibre agrregation nodes of some sort?
Anyway - does all this sound "normal"? My presumption is that they would not have run fibre as far as the house unless we were definitely going to get the FTTP option. And does the lack of the "typical" Infinity cabinets in the area indicate anything? Also - typically how long after the fibre is in would the network go live?
    Many thanks,
    Alasdair

    Hi adentonmiller,
Yes some exchanges have been designated a FTTC/P exchange meaning that some areas within that exchange area will have access to FTTC where other areas within the same exchange area will have access to FTTP.
For some information on the Fibre installation process view this video:
    A) FTTC (Fibre to the cabinet) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53NcsctuxV0
    B) FTTP (Fibre to the premises) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_gUBw8gh90
As to the timescale it depends on how far Openreach have gotten with the deployment of FTTC/P in your exchange area. It can take serveral months if they deployment is already underway or over 12months in some cases.

  • Will I get FTTC

Hi, I am trying to find out if my local cabinat will be upgraded for FTTC. Local streets are either already available or will be available on 31st March but my postcode just returns that its not currently available and there is no date. My postcode is ST17 4FD its frustrating because most of Stafford has Virgin but we don't becuase its a new build so if we are not getting FTTC then there are no super fast broadband options.
I have read through the various FAQ's why a FTTC may not be availible but I am just trying to get some info in case there is anything I can do to get it resolved.

Cabinet 93, which you are connected to, on the Stafford Exchange shows no data as to when you might get FTTC, sorry

  • Bt infinty is in my area and accepting orders for ...

Hello fourms, Just to let you know this is my first post...
So about a month back on the open reach website they said that infinty is in our area, which is New Milton.
So far the only place I know that can get it is at Ballard school if you want their number its 01425 ******.
I have rung up bt twice now and they say that there is no sign of infinty on their end in my area.
also if you would like my post code it BH25 5EX. I have checked out my dads office which is in New Milton and the exchange is so close to his building that he could spit on it.. He keeps joking about it would be quicker just to run a cable him self! If you could get me any news on why infinty is not avalible on my street let alone most of New Milton, I would be very greatful. Also at home i am on cabnit 34 and at my dads office he is on cabnit 4.
    Kind regards

    Hi NiallW ,
As ryant704 has said you can check if WBC FTTC fibre broadband such as BT Infinity is available to your landline number/address by going to the BT Wholesale Database. If it gives a estimated date for WBC FTTC then your cabinet is in the rollout plan.
If you do not have a BT recognisable number then you can check using your address by going to BT Wholesale Database http://dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/ADSLChecker.AddressOutput .
Click here to see an example of what your looking for in the BT Wholesale Database.
If there is no mention of WBC FTTC when checking the BT Wholesale Database then unfortunately it looks like your cabinet isn't currently in Openreach's fibre broadband rollout plan.
I have also checked the address at BH25 5EX and it looks like your cabinet (pcp 34) isn't currently in Openreach's fibre broadband rollout plan as it doesn't mention WBC FTTC for any addresses at BH25 5EX
The Openreach Superfast Fibre Broadband rollout is still in it's early stages and the plans are always being added too.

Also look out for these FTTC Cabinets on/near your street/area. If you see one near your old cabinet (pcp34) then you maybe in luck for Fibre broadband.
    Hope that helps,
    Cheers

  • How accurate is BT's prediction of FTTC speeds?

BT tells me that we now have FTTC live in the Handcross exchange and that I can get my hands on it.
BT says that I should get a Downstream Line Rate (Mbps):
FTTC Range A (Clean)           10.7 (High)      5.8 (Low)
FTTC Range B (Impacted)       8.5 (High)      3.3 (Low)
I take this with a pinch of salt.
It also says that I would get ADSL Max Up to 3.5. This is nonsense and is about half what I actually get.
Are BT's FTTC estimates any more accurate than the ADSL Max numbers?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

yes the FTTC speeds quoted are fairly accurate you would be able to order faster broadband with fibre at those speeds which is the service offered as infinity cannot be sold at sub 15mb speeds

  • Extra Channels - constant "You have lost connectio...

The Extra Channels are now driving me and my Mrs (her more than me) mad. From getting a very rare and occasional "you have lost connection" message and frozen screen, I am now getting this error cropping up almost every 10 minutes.
    My setup (now) is:
Infinity 2, 76 down, 17 up. Has been like this and 100% stable since installation in March.
Vision box connected by long ethernet cable (about 20m) to port 1 on the HH3
8-port Gigabit Switch connected to port 4 on the HH3
Wifi not enabled on HH3 - using Apple Airport Extreme/Time Capsule to use 5Ghz
TV/DVD in lounge and TV/WD box in bedroom connected to the Gigabit switch via Netgear Powerline
I originally had my Vision+ box connected to the switch via Powerline, but about 3 weeks ago (when this issue really raised its ugly head) my vision+ box threw up a message saying it was no longer connected to the internet, check connections, blah blah. Checking on the HH3 showed that the box indeed wasn't connected. Power cycling the box, HH3 and the Powerlines wouldn't remedy the situation, even though everything else was working 100% - TV would connect and stream Netflix, BBC iPlayer etc. So in desperation, I laid in a 20m ethernet from the Vision+ to the HH3. Initially, it still wouldn't connect, but after another couple of HH3 and Vision+ reboots, it connected and all was well - well, sort of.
From that point on, the "You've lost connection to this channel (VMC011) errors have been getting worse, until yesterday, you could barely watch a programme without the damned thing dropping out.
So, contacted Vision+ support in India - do all the usual stuff off his script, but it still hasn't resolved, so he said he'd escallate to 2nd line and they'd phone me today. No call (real surprise there).
So, call back, again have to do all the usual - power off the VDSL modem, HH3, Vision+, back on etc. He then claimed he'd 'reset' the service from his end and 99.9% sure that would 'cure' the problem. Well, guess what - it hasn't.
Since my call to India at 2pm, I have had disconnections at 14:26, 14:51, 15:16, 15:34 and now just at 16:06.
No amount of 'force resync' gets it working, nor does changing channel. The only thing I can do is to wait for the stream to restart, and it usually does with lots of pixellated/garbage picture for about 10 seconds or so before it clears and is watchable again. This 'outage' lasts between 2 minutes and 8 minutes.
Whilst this is happening, there is no continual stream of data on the LAN1 led on the VDSL modem - just the occasional short burst of data, which is coming from the Vision+ box as if I unplug it from port 1, this 'polling' stops.
This is going to be a nightmare once the sport starts - but I'm now getting aggro from my Mrs (who is recovering from Cancer treatment so tends to watch quite a bit of 'her' telly) as she quite rightly feels we are paying for a service we are barely getting. Because of the long and unweildy cable, I'm stumping up £120 or whatever to have my master socket/VDSL modem/HH3 moved adjacent to the TV as this was initially suggested as a fix, and BT are coming out Monday (supposedly) to do this work. But I can't believe this will effect a cure as I can happily watch Netflix or iPlayer without any issues whilst the Vision+ box is dropping it's stream.
I cannot believe this is the 'standard' of service that most subscribers are getting - and I believe this is an exchange or equipment issue, but all India seem capable of doing is reading dummy instructions from their script and 'resetting' the service (whatever that means) - it needs an engineer in the exchange with a data monitor to see what is going on.
Problem as I see it is that on our FTTC cab, there are not many subscribers (yet - I was No. 2 and an Openreach engineer was No. 1) and from what I understand, no other Vision+ subscribers, though that will probably change when Sport is activated. So because of this I doubt that BT are getting any other complaints.
The cynic in me thinks that the new HH4 is being released to cater for all the 'new' BT Sport subscribers as there is an issue with the HH3. Wonder if the HH3 is just not up to handling the multicast stream properly?
Anyone got any sure fire methods of escallating this?

  • BT Infinity availability and enablement

    Hello
we are buying a new built house and we are unable to find out any information about infinity availability. The exchange (Rothley) is accepting orders!!!! and BT customer service cannot help.
We don't have a telephone number yet so we are checking with the postcode.
The next road is served by another cabinet and gets FTTC but slow.
    Please help.
    Very frustrated now!!!!

    Hi ykere,
Have you tried the address of the new build on the BT Wholesale Broadband Availability checker here: http://dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/ADSLChecker.AddressOutput
If there is no mention of WBC FTTC when checking the BT Wholesale Database then unfortunately it looks like your cabinet isn't currently in Openreach's fibre broadband rollout plan.
As it is a new build then probably the best way is to ask other residence on your street. This will also give you an idea if it is available to your street.

  • Tired of BT and the lack of information.

right now it seems BT are still doing the "infinity is coming" thing, you know where they say a date and then move it back 3 months when the date comes arround.  they got told off for doing that so their solution?  just remove the pages where they gave a date, just say comming soon!
the othre is trynig tot get any info out of them about cabinet roll out plans.  BT's excuse of oh its openreach, not us.  No BT!!!!!!! whili i get legaly you are seperate you are far and away openreaches largest customer.  if you said you want it they will offer it up but becasuse you are the same F ing company you dont!!!!!!
for god sake i want to give you my money but you wont let me!!!!!!

    Hi mark2410.
There are currently 2 types of fibre broadband which Openreach are rolling out in certain exchange areas.
One is Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) and the other is Fibre to the Premises (FTTP).
At the moment the majority of Exchanges included in Openreach's Commercial Fibre broadband plan are FTTC enabled exchanges.
This means that not only does your exchange have to be FTTC enabled but your street cabinet (pcp) will also need to be upgraded with a FTTC (DSLAM) cabinet.
Not all cabinets will be upgraded with a FTTC cabinet in a FTTC enabled exchange area.
There are small proportion of exchanges that have been enabled for FTTP.
In Edinburgh there are 6 exchanges down as CS (Coming Soon) that are going to be Fibre enabled.
    These are:
    1) DAVIDSONS MAINS exchange - FTTC - Estimated to be ready by June 2013
    2) EDINBURGH GRANTON exchange - FTTC - Estimated to be ready by June 2013
    3) EDINBURGH LIBERTON exchange - FTTC - Estimated to be ready by June 2013
    4) EDINBURGH MAYBURY exchange - FTTC and FTTP - Estimated to be ready by September 2013
    5) EDINBURGH MORNINGSIDE exchange - FTTC - Estimated to be ready by June 2013
    6) EDINBURGH SOUTH QUEENSFERRY exchange - FTTC - Estimated to be ready by June 2013
Remember that once an exchange area is Fibre enabled, not everyone will be able to get fibre broadband.
If you are in a FTTC exchange area then your cabinet (pcp) will also need to be upgraded with a FTTC cabinet before Fibre broadband such as BT Infinity will be available to you.
If the Superfast-Openreach Commercial fibre broadband rollout doesn't reach you then you may be able to apply or get help from your local council or governments BDUK scheme.
Unfortunately BT Retail (a communication provider/ISP who operates this forum) does not have much say as to when and if you will be able to get FTTC or FTTP/H based broadband such as BT Infinity.

  • BT Infinity available at my exchange, still can't ...

OK I won't bore you all to much with the details of the quest to get an internet connection, but it basically goes like this. I moved address and when I tried to 'move' my BT Infinity service was told it was not available at my new address. I did a check on SamKnows and it said it was availabe. So I've decided to go with Virmin Media as that is the only other high speed provider in this country. After registering and setting up an account I was given various installation dates and the engineer never showed up on any of them, this went on for a whole 2 months until finally I get a call from their installations department telling me the cost is simply too much and demand to low to install services here and this area is now unable to get cable services at all!
A "slow-spot" is an area where you can only get a broadband service with a speed of below 2 Mbps (downstream)
With no other option I have had no other choice but to go and pick up ADSL broadband with an estimated speed of 1.6Mbit down. I figured I'd go for the buisiness package and if I move I can have buisiness Infinity. My post code is N7 8JE, this is in London Zone 2 on Holloway Road which is very central (I can walk to Kings Cross in 20 minuites!) and I cannot get respectable broadband which unfortunately I need for my job. I need an upload of at least 5Mbit and I now have to suffer with something in the region of 200kb. I have done a lot of research and tried all the not known about ISP's but in 90% of cases they use BT's Openreach network and can only offer the same or worse speeds. the other 10% were not available in my area (I've heard that one before)
I did have hope that the 4G network EE might offer a solution... that is until they announced their price plans and data limits... 5GB A MONTH!? for £35.... nope! (2005 called, they want their data plans back).
So as it stands BT come to install their Buisiness phone+ ADSL broadband. Some light on the situation is they said IF it ever becomes available in the area they can put me on the better package free. I was told by the guy I was ordering it from that after the order he'll so a check to see when my cabinate will get Infinity, unfortunately we both forgot and disconnected, and on calling BT back they just do the standard check. I was wondering if anyone can give me some hope and/or advice here on how to improve my situation.
I design game environments and virtual worlds, and I am often uploading and downloading large files along with the engine I use is supposed to require at minimum a 4Mbit connection both ways. I am as you can see a little stuck. Is there any hope?

    Hi Chaoss,
It looks like your on a EO (exchange Only Line).
Unless your exchange is FTTP/H ready then Unfortunatly EO lines are currently unable to have fibre broadband such as BT Infinity due to your line not connecting to a cabinet which would allow FTTC.
Please bear in mind that in some cases it may not be possible to provide FTTC broadband in areas due to:
    • Your phone line may be connected directly to the telephone exchange and not to a local street cabinet - (Exchange Only Line [EO] )
There are different stages to the development of the fibre infrastructure in the UK.
If you have an EO Line then currently you will not be able to have FTTC broadband as your line isn't connected to a cabinet. In these instances Openreach plan to connect some areas that have EO lines with either FTTP or other fibre technologies in the future.

Also check the Openreach "Power of Fibre" website: http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/the-big-build/the-power-of-fibre.aspx
You can keep checking the BT Wholesale Database and BT Infinity website for upto date information as these are updated regularly.
The openreach When and Where website is: http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/
The Fibre-Optic Broadband Rollout is being managed and done by Openreach for all communication providers/ISPs.
BT Retail (your communication provider/ISP) has nothing to do with the rollout of fibre broadband.
    Hope that helps.
    Cheers

  • How do I find noise margin etc?

Over the past few months my download speed has dropped from around 7M to around 3. Work has been going on since the start of the year to bring FTTC to the area and I assumed that this was to blame. But that work has now finished, although I personally am unable to get upgraded. I think it may now be a case of the Mods resetting my profile, but I can't seen to find the noise margin etc from my hub stats. I use HH4. Can somebody please help me with this?

  • E/O Line - No Hope in Central London?

So I live in SE16 and recently reached out (pun intended) to Openreach regarding the status of FTTC in my area. This is the response I received:
Thank you for sending your details, you are connected directly to Bermondsey exchange, this is called an E/O line. Unfortunately, as your line is fed directly from the exchange it fails to meet the commercial criteria. This is because the solution to deploy Fibre Broadband to lines connected this way would not provide a return on the investment based on the costs for the construction and on-going running costs.
Now - I am greatful for Openreach taking the time to get back to me and I realise that Fibre is a business, but where does this leave me? My research shows that Southwark council hasn't received any government funding for broadband and I live so far from the exchange that the slow internet speeds mean that we mostly use the 3G from our smartphones to surf the web at our house.
Is there any hope for me and the thousands of people in our position?
Can someone please give me some hope? or a solution?
    Thanks!

there are many posts like yours and a few have been solved by openreach erecting new cabinets outside the exchange to enable customers to get FTTC - don't know criteria openreach use to decide cabinet or not

  • Want to take up infinity but need advice

    Hi,
I have very recently returned to BT and am aware that the FTTC in my area is due to be completed by end of June.
My present service is just 10gb as a stater for free 3 months.
What's my best option regarding taking up the infinity service when it's rolled out?
I seem to recall something about having "unlimited" or 40gb giving automatic infinity option or am I mistaken?
    Thanks for any comments.
    Stuart.

They are several options which are listed here http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=25633
They do have an offer with 10Gb limit at the moment but normally there are two products
BT Infinity Option 1 40 Mb/sec down 2 Mb/sec up download download limit of 40Gb each month
    BT Infinity Option 2 40 Mb/sec down 10 Mb/sec up unlimited download.
Prcing is complex as there are so many package deals but which one suits you depends on how you use the internet. Minmum contract is 18 months. By the way BT apply traffic management to torrents etc.
