FTTP install - size of fibre tube from ONT to CSP

Hello all, I am now finally able to order fibre where I live and so have ordered the Infinity 3 package.  This is a mixed copper and fibre development, with only copper deployed after moving in a year ago (so currently on ADSL).  The fibre was run to the manifold in the summer but I now have installation dates for the final stages.
I have seen the components that will get installed with FTTP and would be happy to have the CSP on the outside wall next to the front door, where the BT duct emerges and where the copper currently enters the house through the wall.
I would like the ONT, BBU and hub in the cupboard under the stairs, where the current master socket is located.  However, this is in the middle of the house, so the Openreach engineer is going to have to find a way of getting the fibre between the two locations.
The order email states:
On the day, your engineer can run an uninterrupted fibre cable (up to 30 metres long) to your Hub from the box on your outside wall. This cable can only go along walls - both internally and externally, or a combination of both, but not under carpets or floors.
 The email states the engineer should:
work inside your home (but not in loft spaces), and possibly at your local exchange or in the street, to set everything up
run cables along walls or skirting boards (they can't go under carpets or floors) and maybe drill some holes (they'll do this as carefully as possible)
I am fairly sure the existing copper runs up the wall, through the ceiling void, then down a wall into the understairs cupboard.  Being a mixed copper/fibre development, the developer (one of the big UK housebuilders), should have followed the Openreach guidelines and put in a duct between the external BT duct and internal master socket location, but this is too 21st century for them so has probably been ignored.  That said, there is a duct or ducts that goes to that location and bring in the main electricity feed and communal TV fibre through the floor, though I don't know where they enter the house.
My options are:
Have the internal fibre run around skirting boards and door frames - I really don't want this on show in a new house
With the aid of a few holes to be filled later, allow it to be routed behind the plasterboard.
Find a way to tap into the electricity/TV fibre duct.
Number 3 seems ideal if it 'just' a case of digging a hole near the front door to get to it, though care would be needed not to damage the existing cables inside and ensure it remains watertight.
If I go for option 2, how thick is the fibre tube that runs inside the home?  I have dot and dab walls and so could it fit in the void between the plasterboard and blockwork?
Thanks,
James.

Go to Solution.

To conclude my thread, I finally had the FTTP internal installation done yesterday.  (The long delay from ordering was down to failure of BT Retail's ordering system after a reschedule.)
I went with my middle option of going behind the plasterboard and thanks to pippincp's suggestion I put some tubing in place.  Rather than plumbing pipe, I bought some inexpensive flexible conduit, fed some string through it first, then fed the conduit behind the plasterboard along the wall, into the ceiling across the hall (using a hole cut under the bath to help feed it) then down the waste pipe void, which was on the opposite side of the wall.  Sounds easy, but there was quite a bit of effort needed.
I had a very helpful Openreach installer who was happy to feed the fibre through the conduit, where I pulled it through and he fed it in.  Something else to note is that one end of the 30m fibre reel available has the connector to the ONT pre-fitted.  Even if not using my conduit, the cable feeding has to start from the ONT location.
The installer was impressed with the method and agreed it is much better than having the fibre on view.  A fourth option mentioned by the installer was to run the fibre externally to the back of the house, then in through the utility room where a cable on the skirting might be less intrusive.  I had thought about that before putting in the conduit, but was not keen on having so much exposed on the outside wall.
I have a bit of effort now to refill all the holes.  Most were created with a hole cutter in the drill so i still have the cut-outs.  As could be expected, there were more obstructions than expected so there are a lot of holes to do.  Having lived with my hall looking like Swiss cheese for a month and a half, I'll be glad to have it back to normal.

  • Controlling the size of You-tube links

    Is there a way to control the size of the graphic from an You-Tube link?
    I have embedded a link to the clip in an HTML snippet but don't seem to be able to affect the size of the initial image without truncating some of the image.
    Anyway to expand or decrease this viewing box proportionately?

    What's the URL of your site so we can examine it first hand? The snippet's size can be enlarged and will stay that way as long as you don't hit the Apply button after. Maybe that will do what you need.

  • Newbie Musing About Installed Size

    I recently installed two distros on my PC. Arch Gimmick and Debian Etch. I installed both distros the same way. First I installed the "base" system. Then I installed the minimum amount of additional software required for my needs/wants: X window, KDE, Mozilla-Firefox, packages necessary to use my HP 3210 printer, Kaffeine and multimedia packages necessary to play .mpg and .wmv video files with sound, samba and packages necessary to browse shared folders on a WinXP PC on my local network.
    The Arch base system was 575.0 MB while the Etch base system was 460.6 MB. The Arch total installed size is 1647 MB while the Etch installed size is 1200 MB. I am surprised that Arch is 247 MB larger than Etch.
    Arch boots from the Grub menu to a full KDE desktop in 40 seconds while Etch takes 43 seconds.
    Any comments from more experienced Arch users?
    Good luck, jimbo

    I did a quick and dirty speed test between Arch and Etch. I measured load time for Firefox, emelfm, Kaffeine, Konsole and Konqueror.
                  Firefox        Emelfm      Kaffeine      Konsole      Konqueror
    Arch        <3              <1               <2               <1                  1
    Etch        <2               <1              <3                1                   1
    Not really a very presise test, I just started each application several times while watching a clock. But I think it does represent the relative "feel" of the two distros.
    Sorry for the poor column line up, I don't know how to make it any better.
    Good luck, jimbo

  • [Solved]Update Download/Install Size

    I just did a fresh install and did a pacman -Syu and the download size is 36mb, but the install size is 100mb. What is being compressed that much. This is from a 2008.3 RC3 core iso. Its updating things like kernel26 and mkinitcpio. Do those come really compressed, or do they create something larger when installed? I guess I never really paid attention to the install size...
    Thanks,
    Zack

    Yeah, but that could cause the problem in the other direction, like there :
    http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/pacm … 11093.html
    There is also the fact that packages already downloaded dont appear in total download size. But if you are doing -Su, this does not apply.
    There is also xdelta, but this is not used.
    So basically, I  can't explain what you are seeing.

  • I just installed LV2011 and one dll from my vi won't load with the error "application configuration is incorrect"

    I just installed LV2011 and one dll from my vi won't load with the error "application configuration is incorrect", which is Windows lingo for "missing package dependencies".  All the computers at my company with 2010 loaded seem to do OK.  When I do a Dependencies Walk I get missing Visual C debug dll's missing plus IEshims and wer which both have a whole tree of dependencies missing on my machine.  The Windows install is the same "Windows XP version 2002 Service Pack 3" on my PC and the working PC's. So I'm thinking I have to uninstall 2011 and go back to 2010.  Is this correct?  Those VC debug dll's were installed on the machines with 2010 in them but were not installed in mine.
    I've heard the advice to recompile the dll with debug turned off but I don't have access to the source code.
    Thanks in advance.

    u87 wrote:
    Thanks for the reply.  This at least tells me that going back to LV2010 is not likely to solve the problem.  The missing dll's are:
    MFC90D.dll
    MSVCR90D.dll
    IESHMS.dll
    WER.dll
    And, once again, IESHMS and WER have other dependencies.  So perhaps i need to install the Visual C++ development environment.
    IESHIMS.dll is an Internet Explorer DLL that gets usually delay loaded by shdocvw.dll. As delay load it can not cause DLL load errors but only runtime errors. Maybe your DLL has it as direct dependency but that is unlikely since it does not have a documented interface.
    WER.dll is Windows error reporting for Vista/Win7.
    MFC90D.dll is the Microsoft Foundation classes and MSVCR90D.dll is the MS C runtime library, both as debug variant.
    So all the DLLs you mention are actually MS DLLs! You haven't identified the DLL that you try to access in LabVIEW that causes these error messages. IESHIMS and WER are usually delay loaded by any component that needs it and should not likely be used by non MS code.
    What is the DLL you try to load into LabVIEW and by whom? Get the provider of that DLL to provide you a non Debug build of the DLL. Installing Visual C on all the machines just to make the DLL load is not a solution, besides that it is likely not legal since I doubt you have that many licenses.

    I need help, I use my phone for everything enclusive to work. I appreciate if you can help. I'm from Brazil. My name and giullia.

    Did you purchase this device from Apple or an authorized reseller? It sounds as if you had a device that was jailbroken/hacked to operate on your carrier. Upon updating the iOS, it is now locked back to the original carrier the device was locked to.
    Only the carrier the device is locked to can authorize an unlock. You will need to make contact with that carrier and see if they provide unlocking services, and if they do, if you qualify for an unlock. Otherwise, you are out of luck. One that carrier can take care of the unlocking.

  • Passing variable of size greater than 32767 from Pro*C to PL/SQL procedure

    Hi,
    I am trying to pass a variable os size greater than 32767 from Pro*C to an SQL procedure.I tried assigning the host variable directly to a CLOB in the SQL section but nothing happens.In the below code the size of l_var1 is 33000.PROC_DATA is a procedure that takes CLOB as input and gives the other three(Data,Err_Code,Err_Msg) as output.These variables are declared globally.
    Process_Data(char* l_var1)
    EXEC SQL EXECUTE
    DECLARE
    l_clob clob;
    BEGIN
    l_clob := :l_var1
    PROC_DATA(l_clob,:Data,:Err_Code,:Err_Msg) ;
    COMMIT;
    END;
    END-EXEC;
    I also tried using DBMS_LOB.This was the code that i used.
    Process_Data(char* l_var1)
    EXEC SQL EXECUTE
    DECLARE
    l_clob clob;
    BEGIN
    DBMS_LOB.CREATETEMPORARY(l_clob,TRUE);
    DBMS_LOB.OPEN(l_clob,dbms_lob.lob_readwrite);
    DBMS_LOB.WRITE (l_clob, LENGTH (:l_var1), 1,:l_var1);
    PROC_DATA(l_clob,:Data,:Err_Code,:Err_Msg) ;
    COMMIT;
    END;
    END-EXEC;
    Here since DBMS_LOB packages allow a maximum of 32767,the value of l_var1 is not being assigned to l_clob.
    I am able to do the above process provided i split l_var1 into two variables and then append to l_clob using WRITEAPPEND.i.e l_var1 is 32000 in length and l_var2 contains the rest.
    Process_Data(char* l_var1,char* l_var2)
    EXEC SQL EXECUTE
    DECLARE
    l_clob clob;
    BEGIN
    dbms_lob.createtemporary(l_clob,TRUE);
    dbms_lob.OPEN(l_clob,dbms_lob.lob_readwrite);
    DBMS_LOB.WRITE (l_clob, LENGTH (:l_var1), 1,:l_var1);
    DBMS_LOB.WRITEAPPEND (l_clob, LENGTH(:l_var2), :l_var2);
    PROC_DATA(l_clob,:Data,:Err_Code,:Err_Msg) ;
    COMMIT;
    END;
    END-EXEC;
    But the above code requires dynamic memory allocation in Pro*C which i would like to avoid.Could you let me know if there is any other way to perform the above?

    Hi,
    The Long Datatype has been deprecated use Clob or Blob. This will solve lot of problems inherent with the datatype.

    The Mac SuperDrive built into your Mac is the Optical drive.
    1. Insert your Windows DVD in Optical drive. Disconnect any external storage.
    2. Insert a USB2 Flash drive. This will be used to hold the BC drivers.
    3. Start BCA. Check the options to download software and Install Windows. You do not need to download Windows. The BCA will download the BC drivers to the USB.
    4. Partition your drive.
    5. You can see the Windows installer screens at https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/mac/5.0/help/#/bcmp173b3bf2.

    Experts!!
    I have a table that holds the physical file path of files in one of its columns. It does not give a link, just the physical file path.
    For example,---- C:\bu\test.pdf   and let us say the file size is kb according to the OS.
    Is there any way I can obtain the file size of the files from the physical path?
    for example, the file size of the test.pdf file in the example here using t-SQL?

    The SIM card that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware issue with the iPhone. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier. Or if you've recently got the phone unlocked then you'll need to connect it to  itunes and then do a fresh restore to unlock it ,although for most users simply connecting to itunes for few seconds did the trick.

    Update Server
    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem
    Also, for not enough space, remove from your iTunes library media that is on the iPod that yo do not need so it can't be restored to the iPod
