Fuji RAW

Well, as happy as I am for the D200 folks(and myself) the 10.4.6 does not add support for Fuji S3 Pro RAF files. That makes Aperture useless as far as I am concerned. Yes I knew 1.0 did not support it, but c'mon get real. The S3 is a highly popular camera among wedding photographers and even Lightroom BETA 1 supported it. Aperture as a baseline app may be evolving into a "pro" app, but Apple's "window dressing" support is far from "professional". This is the only Apple product that I utterly and completely regret wasting my money on.

<...>
This won't keep me from using Aperture, and I don't
feel like it's a waste (it just could be A LOT
better) but it puts a serious kink in what could
otherwise be a very elegant workflow. I either have
to shoot JPG, or load everything with ACR, then save
as Tiff, and then import those into Aperture. That
sort of defeats the purpose of it being an "All in
one workflow solution" or whatever their tagline is.
Even then either format isn't really ideal.
<...>
I use Aperture in exactly this way today - generate 16-bit TIFF files in batch and then import those into Aperture.
There are some side benefits to this process. One is that you can edit that base TIFF for some alterations after you have already done other adjustments in Aperture - so for example if you think an image needs a noise ninja pass you can edit the master TIFF and all of the versions you have created from it will automatically pick up the reduced noise base for crops and color corrections and so on.
Have you Fuji owners looked at Bibble yet? I think it supports the S3, and it comes now with noise ninja and lens correction tools. That might make a good starting point before the images come into Aperture. If you can't use Aperture for RAW conversion them embrace that as an opporunity to use the very best raw conversion software you can find, like Bibble or C1. RAW conversion is such a small part of what makes Aperture great that I really don't feel it's very limiting to do without if something else can do that well.
Until the day FUji RAW files are supported in Aperture you might try dropping Fuji a note asking them to work with Apple to get support included. I'm sure we'll see support for other cameras eventually but I don't think you can fault them for focusing on Nikon and Canon users first. I don't have either make of camera myself but I cannot logically say that any others should have come first in priority.

  • Is Fuji RAW files supported in iphoto  ?

I have been trying to down load my RAW files from my fuji 9000. I have all the lates updates 10.4.9 and iphoto 6. I read in another post that fuji raw files should be supported, but i still get unknown files downloaded. Am I doing something wrong ? should i be turning some feature on in iPhoto or in the system ? At the last MacWorld I was encouraged and inspired to shoot more and to shoot more in RAW by all of the speakers. any help would be appreciated.

According to iPhoto 6: Supported RAW format cameras if it's a FinePix S2 Pro** or FinePix S3 Pro** camera then it's supported.

  • When will we get better handling of Fuji raw files?

Why is it that Fuji raw files (I'm using a Fuji X-T1 camera) are treated so badly in Lightroom? I have just tried Irident Developer and just exporting random photo of my son with default settings in Irident got me a vastly better result than I able to get from Lightroom.

    Joergen,
I was quite concerned myself when reading some of the posts about LR processing X-trans files, even after the fix done in LR 4.4 (Adobe's Fujifilm X-Trans sensor processing tested: Digital Photography Review)
What I noticed though, is that the articles with "comparisons" are biased and usually talk about "detail" and trying to "fix" it to no avail. My experience with every single raw file available was, however,  that it is possible to do a much better job with LR than what the articles present, leading me to think that the authors are either clueless or marketing agents in disguise.
Moreover, some of the files that are presented as "better" are in fact quite over-sharpened showing an obviously digital result.
My recommendation is to try and see with your own eyes. I was able to test the packages using trial periods and finally ended up sticking to LR for the overall way it handles the images.
Here go a couple of raw files for you to try:
    Dropbox - DSCF2432.RAF
    Dropbox - DSCF2425.RAF
100% comparisons between LR (PROVIA profile) and OOC jpg (PROVIA Film Simulation):
    1.A                                                              2.B
    2.A                                                                                                   2.B
    Any preference?
1.A and 2.A are the Raw files processed with LR. 1.B and 2.B are OOC JPG, PROVIA

  • Fuji raw file problems

Lr 4.4 dng file looks much worse than jpeg out of my Fuji 770exr camera ... why would this happen?  Thanks

Screen-shots of what you’re seeing will help responses be less than wild guesses as to what you’re seeing.  Converting to DNG doesn’t change exposure and doesn’t add lines to an image so something else is going on.
Regarding the overexposed and washed out shots, Nikon cameras have an ADL (Auto Dynamic Lighting) setting and Canon cameras have an ALO (Auto Lighting Optimization) setting, which cause the camera to automatically fix bad exposures before it writes the JPG.  If your Fuji camera has such a setting, and you plan on shooting raw, then turn off this auto-fix setting, because it is just hiding poor technique or challenging lighting situations and will be confusing when you work with your raws in a non-Fuji raw converter like Lightroom.
Lightroom does have a Auto Toning button that you can press to get LR’s attempt at auto-fixing the exposure but it doesn’t work in many situations, especially the Auto Exposure settings.  I usually click LR's Auto to get the Black and the White sliders set and then undo the Exposure setting which is usually not right, having adjusted itself based on a small specular highlight or bit of overexposed sky that isn't part of the subject and darking the whole shot unnecessarily.
About horizontal lines, without seeing what you’re talking about, it could be a number of things:  high-ISO noise banding from the sensor, video-driver issues on your computer, bad-memory chips on your computer, corruption during transfer, hard-drive failure, where except the high-ISO niose, all might be a change to the raw data after it gets to your computer and have nothing to do with LR or your camera.
Are you shooting RAW+JPG and comparing the camera jpg and LR-DNG of the same shot?
Besides screen-shots, an actual DNG, or preferably the raw file before converting to DNG, along with the corresponding JPG if you're shooting RAW+JPG, would be helpful for others to look at, here, to see if the same issues are apparent on their computers or not.  This would help narrow down if it is a hardware issue on your side or something LR is doing.  You cannot attach a large file to a forum message, but you can upload one to www.dropbox.com or www.skydrive.com or similar large-file-hosting service, and post the public download link to it, here, in a message.
You also should be using the latest LR 4.4 with Fuji cameras that have the new X-Trans sensor.  Converting to DNG with prior versions of LR (< 4.4) or a previous version of the standalone DNG converter (<7.4) will have a sub-optimal demosaicking algorithm applied which kills detail, especially color detail, neither of which seem to be what you're describing but it would be useful to understand if you are using LR 4.4 or a previous version.

  • Import fuji raw files

Is there any way for Aperture 3 to import Fuji RAW files?  Lightroom does.

X1 Pro - RAW not yet supported.  Understand it takes a little while as it's a new sensor type but Lightroom has caught up now and Aperture is supposed to be a serious photographers' tool; just as the Mac has always been a serious photographer's computer.
    Come on Apple....!

  • Lightroom's poor conversion of Fuji RAW files

I am on the verge of switching to Capture One due to Lightroom's poor RAW conversion capabilities of Fuji RAW files. Before I do jump boat, I thought I'd ask whether anyone had actually heard as to whether Adobe were going to do something about this. i am not impressed by Adobe lack of performance & communication.

    Mark Alan Thomas,
You see only half of the story. The Problem with JPGs is that this file format applies a "lossy" compression, and with each <save> "unnecessary" pixel information is deleted and lost irretrievably. And this happens each time the JPG is re-saved. So after a few saves the JPG is of very poor quality.
Even with LR that saves edits in the catalog and not in the pixels, you cannot avoid multiple <saves> of a JPG., for instance by exporting.
Also, how many quality settings for JPGs do you have in your camera? I have three: fine - normal - basic. And I have no way of knowing if "fine" corresponds to 100%, 80%, or 75%, or even less. I have practically no control over the quality of your JPG but maybe your camera gives you more control?
IMHO JPGs should only be used for
    - e-mail;
    - web-use;
    - delivery of Lo-res for layout purposes.
The only scenario where I can see a pro shooting JPG is this: You cover a sports event for a sports magazine. The game is on a Sunday and starts at 3 PM and ends at 5 PM. The deadline for the magazine is at 5:30 PM. There is no time to edit Raw images. The photographer has to shoot JPGs and send them off to the magazine right after the game has ended. Maybe there are a few other scenarios that would justify shooting JPGs.
But if you value quality - forget JPPGs.
I use JPGs for the above stated three purposes. But I create them in Lr only when I need them. And I delete them regularly after a while.

Was ist los?

  • Fuji raw files from iPad Camera Roll to Lightroom Mobile

I can not transfer Fuji XE2 Raw files from my iPad Camera Roll into  Lightroom Mobile. They will transfer from Lightroom 5.4 into mobile and can be edited which proves mobile can handle them. However not a lot of good for location use!
Does anyone else have this issue? Is there another way of transferring files within the iPad other than from camera roll?

Thanks for the quick response, although disappointing to hear. Surely that rather defeats the object!
Once you have them on your regular computer why would you then want to transfer and edit them on an iPad? I'm off on a weeks holiday and want to work on them while away.
There are other iPad apps that can import raw files but as I already use Lightroom I was hoping to use their mobile app.
    What a let down!!

And we've been trying to inform you, even in light of your childish insults, that the world is not like that, no matter how much you stamp your feet and cry.
Try to understand that a number of very smart people here, who have thought about this a lot longer than you have and quite likely understand things better than you do, are advising you that you're off base.
You've been given the facts, including that the camera makers are purposefully creating unique file formats for each new camera they make, a practice which costs companies like Adobe significant engineering effort and time to decode.  Adobe has even developed a fully featured, open raw file specification (the DNG standard) that the camera makers could use to solve this problem directly, but nooo, most of them won't use it.  So you blame Adobe for not keeping your ancient software current, free of charge, and for some reason you seem to feel a software company shouldn't be allowed to profit from their work in improving their product.
You paid Fuji, the devious one in this situation, but you refuse to pay Adobe because they didn't reach into your computer and connect all the dots for you?  You seem to think that someone - anyone - other than you needs to be your system integrator.  As stated, the world is not like that.
Beyond that, you apparently don't have an interest in discussing how to get good results through the DNG conversion process, which despite your ranting folks here are still willing to discuss.  But it seems you're too smart to suspect that your own inability to operate the raw converter effectively could be the problem there.
Your choices are clear.  Pay to play, use the free product that invokes a bit of extra work, or go elsewhere.  I'm sorry I did not list 3.  Go away in my first response; my mistake.

  • Fuji raw files

how to ope fuji raf files in pelements12?

    Hi,
The X-T1 requires camera raw 8.4 or later.
In the editor go to the Help menu and select About plug-in -> Camera raw to check which version you have.
Try updating your version by going to the Help menu and selecting Updates.
Then you should be able to open a raw file.
If it fails, please tell us which operating system you are running on.

  • Fuji Raw Conversion Software as External Editor in Lightroom

Anyone know whether Fuji's Hyper Utility RAW conversion software (if I remember the name correctly) will work as an External Editor in Lightroom. (Just read an article by a Nikon photographer who uses Capture NX this way in Lightroom and wonder whether the same is possible for Fuji.)

Thanks; I guess my question (which I did not state clearly) is whether if, at the end of processing in HV-S3 and "Save" the saved file (likely a TIFF) will automatically appear in the Lightroom Library associated with the original RAW file; this would be the chief advantage over just opening the folder with the file in HV-S3 to begin with, but it occurs to me that this may be a dumb question (as I've just downloaded and begun to use Lightroom and can't experiment with HV-S3 yet as it has not yet been released, but will be shortly). Thanks again.

  • Fuji raw plus jpeg in Lightroom 5

This is probably a stupid question with a really easy answer but I’m shooting Raw plus Jpeg on my Fuji XPro-1 and processing through LightRoom 5. Most of the time the jpeg gives me everything I need but occasionally I need the latitude of a raw file, hence the jpeg/raw. I thought that LightRoom would show me both and give me the choice, but when I go to import only the RAW files show up. Is it possible to access either the jpeg or raw when importing?
    Fuji jpeg/raw with L

In the Lightroom preferences there is an option to treat JPEG images next to raw files as separate images. After you check that option (i.e. make it active) then Lightroom will import both the JPEG and the raw images and they will be next to each other.

hallo i just bought aperture to work with raw files of my fuji pro x 1 but the software doen't recognize this kind of files.
    Can you help me?
    thanx

This is the list of cameras supported by Aperture: http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
I do not see your camera on this list, sorry. It uses an unusual sensor.
Does your camera come with software? Then use this to develope your raw and to convert it to tiff and import the tiff into Aperture.

  • Fuji raw files support

I've got a macbook air Processore  1,7 GHz Intel Core i5, Grafica  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB, Software  OS X 10.9 (13A603), Aperture version 3.5.1, raw 5.01 build 718.1, digital camera raw support 5010, build 91.8.
When browsing thumbnails of the raw files from Fujifilm X100s or Fujifilm xpro-1, the image disappears and a meesage comes out saying that file type is not supported. Sometimes they work for a while than suddenly get into the error and don't work any longer.
Is there a solution or shall I throw away Aperture and move to Adobe?
Thanks in advance for your attention.

Raw support is camera specific - it needs to take into account the sensor characteristic, and if possible, the lens.

The sensors do differ, the lenses are treated differently, the X-E2 can record 14bit raw. It definitely needs a different raw support.
