Fuji x-trans raw files import extremely slow

WIn 7 pro 3.6 AMD quad core 16 gb ram 1.2 tb raid 0 WD Velociraptor drives. Lightroom 5.6
I have a fairly quick system and my 24mp Sony raw files import and render full sized previews reasonably quickly -but it takes about 5x longer for my Fuji X-T1 raw files to import and render full size previews.  If I import into Capture One Pro 7 or 8 or into Photo Ninja both the Sony and the Fuji files import and render previews quickly. It is only Lightroom that is so incredibly slow with the Fuji raw files.
I have used LR since version one and my files have always imported reasonably fast , however, the Fuji raw files have been slow to import from the very first import.  Ex - yesterday I imported 312 raf files (Fuji raw files) and it took 31 minutes to complete. I also imported 257 Sony raw files and the import  plus full sized preview rendering was completed in just under 5 minutes.
Am I missing something in the preferences or import workflow?
Thanks for any help
BOb

Thanks for the quick reply! :-)
The setup is identical as when I work with my Nikon-files; I always start by "manually" copy the files from the memorycard to correct location/disk.
In LR I use the "Add" option when I import to my catalog, so the file transfer is not part of the equation....
Even the large files from Nikon D810 is faster to "add" than the files from the X-T1.
But, as you write, it might come down to X-Trans-files (RAF) is not as optimal for Adobe processing as the Nikon raw files (NEF)...

  • Management of Fuji X-Trans RAW Files

It would be really helpful if Adobe staff who monitor this forum could make a comment on work proceeding to improve the handling of RAW files coming from X-trans sensor cameras. I've recently started shooting a Fuji X-E1 along with my Nikon D3s and, while the jpgs are quite good, the RAW handling by ACR results in significant artifacts which limit the usefulness of Lightroom and Photoshop. While I understand that product development timing is uncertain, it would help the entire Fujifilm user community to know that Adobe was at least "working on it".
    Thanks!

  • Lightroom quality on x-trans raw files.

I see a lot of complains on Lightroom's ability to decode fuji x-trans raw file.  Is it now getting better?

    LR adjusted for the foliage
I am not sure we are providing good guidance to typewritter99. Developing a raw file is an interpretation by itself and it is the operator's choice to bring the emphasis on what the focus should be on the picture. You are focusing on a part of the picture that would represent less than half an inch by a quarter should we printed this on an 11x17 sheet of paper. Moreover, the area you are looking at is out of focus to start with.  Frequently we would throw parts of the photo out of focus to drive attention into the subject. Why are we trying to rescue it in the first place? What is it bringing to the overall picture? (and as you can see top left, it is not that LR does a worse job than Iridient).
I mean.... this is the detail we are looking at in the context of full picture posted in the article (http://www.thevisualexperience.org/web/processing-x100s-raw-with-iridient-developer-part-2 /):
The capture above was processed with Lightroom from the RAW file shared in the article... can you highlight any quality issues? Color bleeding, artifacts? I guess that was the point of the original question.
I would certainly recommend typewritter99 to download the free trials of all available converters and test them to see which one fits his needs best from a holistic point of view. But in honesty I cannot personally say I find any quality issues on Lightroom when processing my X-E1 files.

  • When copying raw files from Extreme IV card to hardrive, finder copies a few files then exits task and wipes the card clean of all images.

When copying raw files from Extreme IV card to hardrive, finder copies a few files then exits task and wipes the card clean of all images.  Have tried new card and card-reader to no avail.  Have done this many times on other macs with no problems.
Can edit files off the card, in CameraRaw, prior to 'copying' them, ie can 'save as' to the hard drive, so files seem okay on card, before I try to copy them using copy and paste.
Running OS 10.8.3 on a new macbook pro.

    Rita,
The process for determining what is causing the files to be corrupt can be a tedious one depending on the following:
    1. Can you review the images on your camera's LCD screen without problems? If not then the problem is most probably either a corrupted/faulty memory card or a faulty camera. If this is the case then your best bet at recovery (of sorts) is to use a program such as BrezzeBrowser from BreezeSys to extract the embedded jpeg versions of the corrupted RAW files from within each RAW file. Chances are, you won't manage to actually repair the corrupted RAW file but the jpegs are better than nothing.
    2. If the images review ok on your camera but are corrupted when viewing on your computer and there seems to be no other problem with other files on your computer then it may be either a faulty card reader or usb/firewire cable between the card reader and the computer that is the culprit. Try the card reader with a different cable and also try a different card reader to determine the cause of the corruption.
    3. If your symptoms are that you get different files corrupting over time when viewing them on your computer then the problem may be any one of either failing RAM memory, hard disk, hard disk controller or IDE/SATA hard disk cables. This is where the troubleshooting can be pretty tedious testing then eliminating each item from the list of suspicious pieces of hardware. Try the card and card reader on an altogether different computer to see if the files transfer correctly to that computer. If so then the problem lies with your computer hardware. If you haven't already done so at this stage, backup all your important data immediately (hopefully you keep backs anyway).
    Hope this helps.

  • Fuji X-E2 raw file help

So, I updated from my X Pro 1 to the new Fuji X-E2, now LIghtroom doesn't recognize the file.  I have a Lightroom 5 that I can install, but it wants a newer version of Windows.  Is it possible to get the new Fuji X-E2 files to be read in Lightroom 4?  Please help, this is very frustrating.

    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
The link above will provide details of the cameras that are presently supported by Lightroom and which version.
Lr 4 requires Windows Vista or later.
Support for the Fuji X-E2 needs LR 5.3 or ACR 8.3.
To get LR 4 to work with Fuji X-E2 raw files you will have to use the Adobe DNG Converter 8.3 to convert the Fuji Raw files to DNG and then import into LR 4.x

  • Will there be an improvement of X-Trans RAW Files Developing in Lightroom?

Hey, dear Ladies and Gentlemen of Adobe!
I am very upset because of your lousy support of Fujifilm X-Trans RAW Files Developing in Lightroom. I spent a lot of money to buy Lightroom. Now this Software is not useable to me because it handles RAW Files of my Camera (Fujifilm X-T1) very unsatisfying.
It is not just me, you can read it all over the Internet. The Fujifilm X-T1 is a state of the art camera and delivers very good Pictures, but why - in the name of god - is lightroom handling it so lousy?!?
You are forcing me to look for another Software. I have tried a lot apps the last few days. And EVERYONE has a better result but Lightroom.
Even the to be discontinued Aperture by Apple has a far better result of developing that raw files. A small one-man Company named "Iridient Developer" has the best result i have ever seen with all that apps! To name them:
I tried Aperture, Iridient Developer, Photoninja, AccuRAW, Capture One, SilkyPix 5, and a lot more. All of them are making better, sharper, crispier Pictures than Lightroom 5.5. Yes, i have the latest Version.
The Pictures are like painted in Watercolors. No Details, no fine Structures. I am heavily disappointed!
I do not expect to get an answer with a satisfying solution. You already have my money. Why care about customers?!?

  • Why won't Aperture 2 support RAW files imported from Canon 60D when it does from my Olympus DSLR?

Why won't Aperture 2 support RAW files imported from Canon 60D when it does from my Olympus DSLR?

I'm afriad the fact that your Olympus dSLR is supported is no relevance.
The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
Support for individual camera models has to be added one by one, and Apple will update the OS to work with the most recent version of the software. That's an incentive for you to keep up-to-date. So, for support for your 60D you'll need 10.6.5 plus Aperture 3 and/or iPhoto 11.

My fuji x100s has RAW file compatibility issue with OS 10.8.2, my iphoto11 cannot recognise the file format.  Anyone know of this issue too? Appreciate if anyone can offer some helps.  Thanks

Correct.  The Fuji X-100s is not currently supported by iPhoto or Aperture (or the RAW converter in OS X itself).  You can submit feedback via iPhoto and request this.

  • Why won't my RAW files import into LR4?

    Hello all,
Something very strange is going on with LR4.  I have been using LR since version 1 and never had this happen before.  When I have an SD card filled with jpegs and RAW files from my Fuji X100 camera and try to import all of them into LR 4, ONLY the jpeg files get imported.  None of the RAW files get moved into LR at all.  I have to create a new folder, move all the RAW files so that they are alone, and do a second import.  Why is this?  Why cannot I import all at one time, not even thinking about the difference?
Seems absolutely stupid that my RAW files are being ignored.
Thanks for the help.  Appreciate it.

Sorry, I assumed that you were shooting RAW + jpg.  What I think you are now saying is that you have a shoot in which some of the files were shot in RAW and some in jpg?  In that case, I don't know why it would only import RAW on the first go round and jpgs on the second. When I have mixed files (I shoot only RAW, but panoramas  are by definition only jpgs), they all import on the first try. In fact, even video files come in at the same time.
If you did shot RAW+Jpg then you could either check the box, in which case you will see two files, or uncheck it, in which case you will see one (with the other hidden). But since that's not the case, that check box doesn't apply to you.
Right.  Most of my shots are jpegs.  But on rare occasions, I want a RAW file so I hit the RAW button on the X100 and then shoot RAW for one shot.  This last import I had 10-15 RAW shots and they would not import along with all the jepgs.  This happens everytime I have mixed file formats.  Very frustrating.
    Thanks for trying!

  • RAW file import to Photos; OS X 10.10.3

How to import the RAW files into Photos?
Panasonic DMC-LX3. I shoot both RAW and JPG images. iPhoto would import both images for each picture, Photos just imports the JPG. I am NOT using the iCloud photo library. The picture in Photos has a small shadowed box in left bottom corner with a J in it - almost like there is a hidden file, no idea what the J means, can find no reference in help files or online.
I've tried importing direct from the memory card in iMac slot and with camera plugged into USB - no difference. Photos did pull over all the RAW files from the iPhoto library on first startup.
The LX3 is listed as supported by OS X Yosemite V10.10 OS X Yosemite: Supported digital camera RAW formats - Apple Support
Maybe the issue is that I could select Adobe Photoshop Elements as the photo editor in iPhoto preferences . Photos does not have this external editor feature.Help!

My camera's JPEG processing is almost always better than the default JPEGs created by either Aperture or Photos for OS X.
    Sure.
Not to mention the time needed to create them in the applications, which slows down the import process quite a bit.
Well that doesn't make sense, as they are created anyway, and if you use in camera editing on the jpeg you actually be generating two sets of previews on import.
If the shot doesn't need work I'd like to throw the RAW away and not pay for the storage it uses up (locally and in the cloud).
    This is easy:
    File -> New Smart Album
    Photo -> is -> Raw
Find them, and then you can delete the ones you don't want.

  • Fuji X-trans raw conversion

I have both the Fuji X-E1 and the X100s. The conversions of the raw files in ligtroom, while much better than they were, still have a way to go to match raw conversion from programs like Photo ninja and Iridient. I'm wondering if Adobe is working on improving the raw conversion of X-Trans files in lightroom. Love lightroom, but the raw conversion of fuji files is still problematic in areas of fine detail, like tree branches and leaves. The effect is something like an halo around these features, and is worse once the files is sharpened.

I'm very interested in this topic, too. Actually, I'm sure there are tenth of thousands of photographers interested, including professionals. I just purchased Lightroom, but this is a great chance for Adobe's competitors to get clients. Let's see if Adobe answers to this thread, and if they will do something to fix the poor X-Trans (but also micro 4/3 like Olympus OM-D E-M1) support. They have the experience to do something in very short times, let's see...

  • Updated to LR 5.4, images now importing extremely slow. After importing and rendering images are still very slow to go through and develop. No issues in LR 5.3 which was very fast.

After importing and rendering images are still very slow to go through and develop. No issues in LR 5.3 which was very fast. Canon,Nikon, Leica and Fuji files all rendering slow. iMac 2.9 ghz 16gb RAM OSX 10.8.5. Catalogs and images are kept on external drives. Drives running fine. Really need a fix on this since I'm norally imported and processing at least 4,000 images per LR Catalog. Is there way to revert back to 5.3? I can't use 5.4 is its current state. Thanks.

Download LR 5.3 and install it
By the way, lots of people have this complaint about LR 5.4, and the advice I give is to use LR 5.3 unless you need one of the new camera models supported by LR 5.4

  • Can I "cache" large RAW files imported from network drive on local drive?

I've seen discussions similar to this topic, regarding "offline" editing, but not exact answers I'm looking for.
I'm copying RAW files from a shoot onto my network RAID drive in a per-album folder, from where I then import into a new LR catalog (I'm using LR 4.1) on my Windows laptop for that album.
I'm finding that editing RAW files on a network drive from a wireless laptop is awfully slow (not to mention not being able to continue the work offline somewhere else), so I'd like to cache those files on my speedy SSD drive just until I'm done editing and exporting/publishing that album.
I back up my per-album catalog onto the network folder alongside the RAW files since that's my IT-managed master repository. When I'm done editing, I'd purge the cached files and just keep the catalog previews on my limited capacity SSD.
So, is there a way to tell LR to, for one/all files imported from a location (in my case a network folder), look in an alternate location for the identical files? Since I create per-album catalogs in per-album folders, there wouldn't be filename clashing. Either LR can provide this caching behavior on its own or I'd manually copy files from the network folder to a local folder and tell LR to look there first.
I don't really want to make copies of files into secondary folders within LR since then it's a hassle to merge edits on the cached copy to its master copy (I haven't done this, but I'd imagine so).
    Thanks for your workflow tips.
    Erhhung

Have you tried locating your ACR Raw cache on this SSD drive, also ensuring that the size limit of this cache is large enough, to keep a goodly chunk of these Raw images all in play at the same time?
My understanding is that for performance reasons, LR will be caching your Raw data locally in any case - on conventional hard disk by default. And it will be doing so in an intermediate half-converted form (demosaiced into "sensor RGB space" but not translated into "picture RGB values" - the latter process varies depending on your live Develop adjustments).
So long as this cache has not run short, and reallocated space for something else, LR should (as far as I know) not be needing to go back to the network drive to re-fetch actual Raw content. And keeping that cache somewhere fast rather than somewhere slow, should improve responsiveness.
I imagine, though, that LR will continually check the availability and the unchanged timestamp of the real source file; and wouldn't let you carry on working from automatically cached data otherwise.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro File Explorer Extremely Slow

    Hello,
I am using Windows 8.1 Professional, and since a short time, I am having troubles with the file explorer.
It is extremely slow. When I just want to select a file, it takes about 10 seconds, if not more, and then any operation I perform on files (opening directories, renaming files, right-clicking for options, etc.) is terribly slow.
I have looked at the indexing options and tried to minimize the areas that are indexed, but to no avail. Even with only C:/Users indexed, I have about 500,000 items indexed.
    Here are my PC specifications:
    1. 32 GB of RAM
    2. Intel core i7 3.50 GHz with 4 cores
    3. 240 GB SSD in RAID + 3 TB Western Digital Black Edition in RAID
Do you have any ideas on how I could solve this? Also, I would like not having to clean-install my PC.
    Regards,
    Jeremie

AMS-DIS, perhaps you're talking about a different level of problem than the person who started this thread.
Just because you've seen it personally doesn't make it automatically a systemic Microsoft problem.  While I don't disagree that Explorer could be better programmed, there ARE those of us who don't see regular crashes, freezes, or particularly slow operation.
Keeping in mind that external drives have to spin up, and that can be perceived as taking some time when you access the drive in Explorer, once spun up you shouldn't be seeing noticeable delay.
If you are, please quantify what you're seeing with some specifics.
    Here's what I see:
When I first navigate to my spun-down MyBook external USB drive I see the contents of the root folder instantly.
When I navigate a level or two into the folder structure I see a few second delay when it gets deep enough that the data is not cached and the drive has to spin up to get it.
Then, once spun up, when I navigate into any folder its contents show up instantly.
When I copy a file by dragging to/from the drive or do a backup to the drive I see a substantial percentage of the theoretical maximum transfer speed (I have USB2).
If you are not seeing performance similar to the above then you have something out of the ordinary set up on your particular system that's causing it.  You should never be seeing crashes.  I don't.
Now, that being said, when transferring multiple files / folders, I *do* see a fair bit of slowdown in transfer rate, implying something's being throttled back by Explorer or there's way too much end to end communication, even between SSDs.
I've wondered whether Explorer is slowing things down just so you can see them happen in its progress dialog.    Windows XP used to be faster at copying big blocks of multiple files even 13 years ago.
