Full 64-bit Aperture 3 Performance Maxed

All Macs running Snow Leopard that are Core2Duo or better are capable of full 64-bit, but from reading the threads I would say almost nobody is doing this.
Currently, of all Macs on the market now, only the X-Serve boots into full 64 bit mode by default.
I guess that this is because Apple assumes a server is typically professionally managed, meaning the operator would have the technical savvy to verify that all required software is 64 bit clean....ALSO servers do not tend to have any excess software on them that is not needed for them to function.
Stark contrast to the overstuffed user machines cluttered with useless old files PLUS there is still lot of current valid user software not 64-bit capable yet, like PS CS4. Knowing this, Apple does not want a lot of complaints from average, non IT professional users for current non-64 bit incompatibilities, and that is understandable. This makes Apple's default boot mode for Snow Leopard on user machines 32 bit mode. Currently Apple makes users DELIBERATELY select full 64 bit mode at boot...and in so assuming that these hopefully savvy users know the possible consequences.
Now when running in the default 32 bit mode, 64 bit apps will operate in either 64 bit, or if so selected in their Info box, 32 bit to maximize compatibility. While running a 64 bit app increases its performance, it is only a portion of the performance running a full 64-bit machine will do.
If your system has a lot of extensions or old drivers or other associated crapola <(technical term) left over from years of upgrades, you might just want to pass on this suggestion right now...HOWEVER if your system is decently clean, a fresh install of the OS and Aperture 3, you will most likely be fine.
Aperture 3 running on a full 64-bit machine is a delightful improvement, and in my limited experience to date SMOKIN' fast.
Now if you are on still on Leopard, congrats, you kept better performance than the early SL adopter folks on Aperture 2...BUT Aperture 3 NEEDS SL to make it sing, so if you are going to move to Aperture 3, UPGRADE to SL 10.6.2 NOW.
Assuming we are all on SL 10.6.2 now let's talk full 64 bit, and getting all the performance your hardware can deliver.
OK then...On this clean system, restart and hold both the 6 and 4 keys down during boot. You can then verify the full 64 bit mode by looking in the System Profiler. Select About this Mac... More Info... then click on the Software title header in the left column and in the second to last line you should see:
" 64-bit Kernel and Extensions: Yes"
WELCOME to your full 64 bit machine.
After checking you are in full 64 bit, launch Aperture 3, and Activity Monitor...to monitor performance.
If all goes well, Aperture should now be SMOKIN fast. I can hold the arrow key down in full screen and D3X .NEFs render almost immediately, smaller files a blink. 6GB on my MBP shows no pageouts running just Aperture 3. An 8 core Mac Pro with lots of RAM will be MUCH faster due to full 64 bit AND the parallel core thread processing.
Imports with backups to a secondary disk (YAAY!!!) are so fast I cannot believe it, I think it is faster than Photo Mechanic, which is my gold standard for import/ingest speed.
Now the two finger 6 and 4 key reboot method is only temporary, the next reboot it will revert to 32 bit mode, which is handy at this point in time if you have run into crashing or other problems.
If you find you have a clean system you can make it boot into 64 bit all the time, but that is part of a larger performance discussion...just try this and see if you are doing better in terms of performance.
Remember, most plug-ins, etc. are not going to be 64 bit yet...in fact Aperture even displays this in the File:Export... menu where it says (32 bit) next to the names of plug-ins. OBVIOUSLY (I hope) it probably would not be such a great idea to try these in this full 64-bit mode (ya think?). Just enjoy the stuff that does =).
So...chances are VERY good you probably cannot do all your work in this mode just yet...BUT...if you are limiting tasks for the moment to just Aperture and the OS, like library conversion, or learning the new features, you probably will blow through this much faster than in 32 bit.
ALSO, while I am talking Aperture performance...
Aperture also needs really fast storage to see max performance with big libraries (500GB+), and I mean an eSATA host with a striped array. Firewire 800 and lesser technologies are 3-4 times slower on average. Sadly, Only the 17" MBP (and all previous size version MBPs) and the Mac Pro can run an eSATA host. To me this is the single biggest drawback to the iMac, and seems REALLY silly now that you can buy an iMac with an i7 processor with a great graphics card...but only the internal single drive is eSATA, and you are stuck with FW800 for storage.
Anyway, I am running a Sonnet Tempo Pro Express 34 card in my MBP connected to Sonnet Fusion D500P array with 10TB of disk space, formatted using SoftRAID. My dedicated space for Aperture benchmarks on this setup at about 130MB/sec on average of all tests. Two crucial facts here is that the Sonnet drivers for the card (v2.2.1) are full 64-bit as well as the fact that a 64 bit version of the SoftRAID driver is included with Snow Leopard for users in 64 bit mode, which will allow you to keep existing volumes and access data from the 64 bit version of Snow Leopard.
Anyway, fellow Aperture 3 adopters I encourage you to give it a shot...and I hope this results in some smiling faces...
Sincerely,
K.J. Doyle
PS No flames please... of course since this is all new ground YMMV... proceed at your own risk, there is a reason Apple is not making this easy right now...'nuff said, I hope.

Kevin -- is it your understanding that Aperture can and will default to 64 bit performance without need to reboot 6-4?
Hi Miguel,
He is correct, Aperture will be running in 64 bit, but the rest of the machine will not, and Aperture is dependent on many other subsystems, storage being #1 given the huge size of libraries. As I said above, I am pretty sure Apple would not recommend you run full 64 because of the other incompatibilities that exist on the machine, it would cause too many complaints from those who do not understand the need for 64 bit clean operation, and that all apps are not there yet.
HOWEVER, there is a lot more to this than just Aperture's operation, as it is an app that uses many resources.
There is a very significant difference in operating my eSATA array with 64 bit drivers and a full 64 bit machine, and therefore Aperture runs much faster than it would using the 32 bit drivers for the storage.
There are other issues as well with greatly improved OS memory operations and other technical issues that impact this as well. The more RAM you have the bigger the improvement. This impacts parallel processing of threads, and again gives more time to Aperture in the bargain.
Sincerely,
K.J. Doyle

  • Aperture 3 Performance is Unbelievably Slow

My library is not huge (~9000 images), but Aperture 3 performance is ridiculously slow. My library resides on an external drive (a Mercury On-The-Go High Speed Portable SATA Solution unit). No other apps are open. I have 2GB RAM. I have turned off the faces feature, thinking that might help. No dice. The software is unusable at this performance level. Any ideas? Thanks.

I have been flamed (OK, toasted a bit)for suggesting that:
-- Defragging the Aperture Library is necessary at all or helpful if done,
-- Simple copy out/copy back is not enough.
But this is precisely what I have seen. OSX does an incredible job of keeping disks A) optimised and B) largely defragged. The Aperture Library appears to be a huge exception. I suspect that this may be an artifact of the "Package" concept. It is clear that in many cases a Package is intended to look like one single file. I wonder if this keeps all of the internal files from being reorganized when copied. I hasten to add that I am way over my depth here.
    I can confirm that:
-- Deleting the cache and prefs files seems to fix the major speed problems.
-- The various preview, index, and related files can become fragmented into hundreds of fragments. Master image files are typically not more than four fragments. Obviously, the faster your disk, the less this is an issue, but for those of us who are running a plane Jane mini with a slow drive, a RAID 0 is not an option.
-- As noted by many, iDefrag's "Quick On-Line" mode cleans this up in mere minutes. (Fewer minutes the second time.) And, as a side benefit, it cleans up the various Private and Spotlite files that may have become fragmented. All of this WITHOUT attempting a major reordering of the disk. (Probably just as well, because, as noted repeatedly, OSX does an excellent job of optimization.
In any case, the happy coincidence of all of this and the multiple udates from Apple is that Aperture 3 absolutely roars. I still keep my stuff backed up in three copies, but crashes, hangs, etc., have never been a problem and all of the brushes and sliders are much more responsive, on 100 MB TIFF images at full resolution, than Apeture 2 ever was.

  • "Full Screen" in Aperture 3.2.1 is on wrong screen.

"Full Screen" in Aperture 3.2.1 - I finally bought Aperture and tried editing using my macbook pro and cinema display.  I am working with Aperture on the cinema display and selected "Full Screen," however, the "Full Screen" shows up on the laptop, not the cinema display.  The usual Aperture window stays on the cinema display.  Of course why bother editing if the full screen image is not on the larger display?  I tried dragging the "full screen" image from the laptop to the cinema display, but that wouldn't work.  I searched as best I could for any help on this matter to no avail.  Has any one else had this problem?  Thanks for any help with this.  (I usually work with PS CS5, other editing plug-in's with that, and iphoto for managing libraries.)

The most trouble-free (from the computer's perspective) is to put the OS Menu Bar on the big screen (this makes it the Primary Display), go Full Screen and set the secondary monitor to none.
All other variations of Full Screen + Dual Monitors are prone to the kinds of behavior you have experienced (IME).  I gave up using Full Screen Mode with dual monitors many months ago.  I hide the Toolbar, and regularly hide/show the Inspector.  I keep my browser to the side in Split View.
I had expected Apple to fix these problems with the release of Lion (guessing that Aperture's Full Screen Mode was actually a bit of a preview of what Lion would deliver).  Early reports were that this is not the case.
If you have a moment, you might send a report to Apple via "Aperture→Send Aperture Feedback".  The performance of Full Screen Mode on a dual monitor set-up is more lemon than Apple.

  • Full HD-Screen only running on max 1280x1024 (or 1344x1008 in 4:3)

    Hey there,
    I just set up my 13" MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) via Thunderbold-DVI-Adapter to a 22"-Full HD-Screen.

  • Full photos from Aperture to iphoto

I'm new to aperture but I'm trying to import full quality photos from aprture to iphoto, however all I can manage to get in iphoto is thumbnails a few hundred kb worth...Does anyone know how to transfer full quality jpegs over after editing with aperture..ps I can't get raw files off my canon 450d either...
    cheers David

    Davo
The only way to get "full photos" from Aperture to iPhoto is to export them from Aperture ant then import them to iPhoto.
If you use the Media Browser in iPhoto (File -> Show Aperture Library) then you can drag Previews over. You can increase the quality if the pics available to iPhoto this way by increasing the quality of the Previews.

  • Anyone remember the marketing hype about Mac Pro 1st Gen being first full 64-bit?

Not a biggie as Apple don't really cater for my needs anymore, but I was under the impression that my 2006 Mac Pro was full 64-bit.

  • Aperture Slow Performance

Aperture 3 is running very slow on my MacBook Pro Retina 2012...I think a big factor might be that I have roughly 20,000 photos/videos in my library, and the library is stored on my external drive as a managed one. I have a WD 2TB Firewire 800 (I use a Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to use it) external...I know that Firewire 800 is extremely slow compared to USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt. But is there any way I could boost Aperture's performance?
Every time I open up Aperture, it is "Processing". This will last easily 1-2 hours, making it barely useable. Most of the time it will give me a spinning rainbow wheel and I will have to force quit. Should I create separate libraries because mine is decently large? I really would like to keep all of my photos/videos in one location on my external, but if keeping everything on the local drive would be better, I can try that. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

What is your Aperture 3 version? Have you updated to the latest version? If not, update to Aperture 3.5.1 for the best compatibility with MAvericks.
If you have Aperture 3.5, make sure your Preview preferences are set according to this support article:  Aperture 3.5: Set "Share XML with other applications" to "Never" for better performance and faster quit times
Every time I open up Aperture, it is "Processing". This will last easily 1-2 hours, making it barely useable.
You may have imported corrupted videos or image files, that cause Aperture to continually try to create previews. Is Aperture more responsive, when you launch it with the Shift-key held down? That is a sure sign for problematic content in the library. Try, if removing your last import from the library fixes this. (see:                   How to Screen an Aperture Library for Corrupted Image Files or Videos)
Or the internal libraries in your Aperture library need repairing. Try the First Aid Tools: See:  Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual

  • Aperture 3 Performance Issues

Having real issues with Aperture 3.2.2.  It is getting incredibly painful to use!  General use is VERY slow and the longer I work with it the slower it gets even if it is the only application open.  I just wondered if there was a reliable step by step guide in improving Aperture's performance?
    The background stuff:
    Aperture 3.2.2.
Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1
    MacBook Pro 2.8GHz dual core
    4Gb RAM
750Gb HD (1/2 empty) Library is stored on internal drive.
25,000 library with all masters stored in Aperture library (library is as old as Aperture 1.0 and has under gone several upgrades with new versions but never a rebuild).
Majority of images are 8MP Canon RAWs but am starting to work with 18MP Canon RAWs after a camera upgrade.
Even contemplating jumping ship to Lightroom, but I like Aperture workflow and tools and I'm guessing my biggest issue is the size of my library.
I have read various things on here about rebuidling libraries, or using seperate libraries by year to reduce library size.  I don't want to invest a load of time for minimal results.  I also appreciate my machine would benefit from a RAM upgrade, but not wholly convinced this will fix my issues?
    Appreciate any advice.

Slowness like what you describe indicates a problem.
Is Aperture processing in the background?  This shows at "Window➞Show Activity".
8 GB RAM recommended anyway.  Check page outs if you want to see for yourself.
Splitting Library will have no major effect:  Aperture uses memory well.  Library size is mostly immaterial except as relates to drive size.  (You have ample free space.)
Repair/Rebuild recommended.  I do this regularly for all my Libraries.  Of course, you shouldn't even open Aperture without having backups of your Libraries and Referenced Originals.  Do this overnight -- it is also good to let Aperture run unmolested for a few hours, which it should have time to do after the Repair/Rebuild is complete.  (Since your Library seems intact, "Repair" should be enough -- don't have to "Rebuild" yet.)
You may have additional "bottlenecks".  Things to check:
    - Does Aperture run faster/smoother under another user account?  If so, delete your Aperture Prefs.
    - Does Aperture run faster/smoother with another Library?  If so, look for corrupt Images in your Library.
Repair, Rebuild, and Prefs deletion are covered on the Apple Aperture trouble-shooting page.
Good Luck -- let us know what you find out.

  • Full 64-bit Plus Major GPU Acceleration Coming to PrPro

OK, this is a BLOG SPOT on upcoming features for PrPro, and not for PrE - yet!
I'm posting the link here, because much discussion has gone on here, regarding full 64-bit utilization, not just certification that the 32-bit programs will work in a 64-bit environment. The same has been asked about full GPU utilization. Here is a peek into the near (?) future. What plays well with PrPro often finds its way to PrE. Unfortunately, there are no hints of "when," so it would be only a guess to speculate on the trickle down to PrE. Still, it makes for interesting forum discussion.
Hope that someone finds this as interesting, as I did.

Right now, my jury is still out. I've been flirting with HD, and still do a bit of 3D, so my existing (non-CUDA capable) Quadro is nice. I'm not sure that I have gotten my money's worth out of it, but it has been rock-solid to date.
What I have to determine is whether I still have enough clients, who will keep me busy enough to justify the $. Maybe, but maybe not. To date, a few have talked of HD, but SD has been what they ended up using and being satisfied. Also, as each quarter goes by, I seem to be easing more towards full retirement. Too much wine in the cellar, and I need to tend to that full-time!
Anyway, I can wait, and get by with what I have and what I am doing. As I have aged, I have become much more patient about things like computers and new formats.

  • Aperture & Lion performance issues

    Hi All,
I am running Aperture 3.1.3 and Lion 10.7.1 on a MBP 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and have:
    1. Turned off faces and gestures
    2. Set preview images to medium (5)
    3. Turned off MobileMe "automatically check for newly published albums"
    4. Turned off share previews with iWork and Ilife
    5. Killed off indexing for the photo library
Aperture runs so slow at times its unusable.  It can take upwards of a minute to process any changes to an image.  Loading an image can take upwards of 30 seconds. HDR processing of three images is a full blown 15 minute coffee break.
I took a look at the Activity Monitor and I find that Aperture is running upwards of 3.5 GB of virtual memory and 1 GB plus of real memory. Disk I/O can hit more than 386 per second. CPU utilization runs anywhere from 10% at idle to 268% (really thats what the Activity Monitor says) when running HDR plugin.
I am running all RAW and the typical image size is 19 MB.
Today it wouldn't find my SDHC card that was plainly visible on the desktop without a reboot of the program...
It occationally crashes when exporting to JPEGs.
Occationally it hangs and needs a force quit.
Occationally makes me want to toss my MBP in the dumpster from the roof of my office and give up digital photography when it runs slow and I need to get something out of it quickly.
Anyone have any suggestions?  I really don't want to switch applications (too much of a PITA) and buying a new mac would put a crimp in me saving up for a Nikon D4.
I can feel my life slipping away while I wait for Aperture to slog through its machinations and let me edit and export my images...

Your workflow may be running out of RAM and therefore "paging out" to disk. Page outs slow operation a lot and can lead to instability. As noted, switching to from 64-bit to 32-bit mode will help RAM-starved workflows.
You can evaluate whether or not you have adequate RAM by looking at the Page Outs number under System Memory on the Activity Monitor app before starting a work session; recheck after working and if the page outs number increased significantly during operation your workflow is RAM-starved. Ignore the other info in Activity Monitor.
If page outs increase significantly during operation you can add RAM or simply try to run Aperture by itself. Switching from 64-bit operation to 32-bit operation will also make some additional RAM space available.
On my 2006 MBP with its max of 3 GB RAM I always did a restart prior to a heavy Aperture session to clear any memory leaks and make sure no other apps were open. Browsers in particular will often suck RAM Aperture would otherwise be using.
The problem with running a RAM-deficient workflow like I did is that along with slower operation, page outs can reduce overall stability - - and instability always seems to present at the worst times, like in the midst of processing a time-critical project. It does help a lot to keep a really really clean workflow.
If your test of page outs does show that you are paging to disk the speed of your drives and drives connectivity become even more important than normal. Drives slow as they fill so keep drives underfilled. No more than ~70% full is a good maximum guideline, but less full is faster. Use Firewire rather than USB for external drives when possible.
OS 10.7 does seem to utilize more RAM than OS 10.6 does, and that makes sense because over time evolving OSs and evolving apps take advantage of evolving hardware. I find excellent performance with 8 GB RAM on a 17" 2.2 GHz MBP and OS 10.6.8. I suggest that those of us  on 10.6.8 you should avoid 10.7 Lion unless we have at least 8 GB RAM.
IMO all Aperture users who can should routinely bump RAM to at least 8 GB. Two good sources of third-party RAM (Apple overprices RAM) are Crucial and OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/.

  • Full report on Aperture at PMA (include 1.1 features) up

I've just put up my PMA overview - as PMA continues I'll continue to go back and flesh out detail for things I may have missed (and expand the booth coverage with pictures). I think I've pretty well covered the 1.1 features though.
    http://insideaperture.com/Site/Aperture%20PMA%20Overview.html
To keep in tune with updates, make use of the rss subscription from this page:
    feed://insideaperture.com/Site/PMA/rss.xml
As I add new information to any section of the overview I'll announce it via that news channel.

Thanks for the info kgelner. But I am not sure I
agree with one of your conclusions. For instance,
Apple saying that third parties may provide custom
book sizes has nothing to do with opening up the API
for plugins. Custom book sizes could be delivered
    without access to the API.
    <...>
The thinking here is that if they expect custom third party books, that implies eventually publishing a standard for design of the books - as it stands now you can't be sure a custom book would work in the next version of Aperture (even just point releases like 1.1). I agree it's a bit of a stretch but published support in one area implies thinking of third party extensions which leads naturally to other areas.
You should note that the info on certification has
been on Apple's website for weeks.
Hmm, I had missed those before!
Come to think of it I still do not see the second level certification class for Aperture, I'll have to take a look.
Also of note, Josh Anon's Aperture2iLife program
already makes it possible to use images from Aperture
projects in all other iLife applications (except
iPhoto). While it would be good to eventually have
this capability within Aperture, I don't see this as
nearly important as say improved RAW decodes.
Will full resolution? I think it may only be using the large JPG thumbnails. Not that it makes much difference for most iLife uses.
All in all, it's my opinion that the work Apple has
done on Aperture addresses most of the legitimate
concerns voiced by users. Several photographers at
the show have called me after seeing demos to report
vast improvement in performance and RAW decodes.
That's great to get some other afirmations on the progress, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. The Apple booth is definatley pretty busy and the reaction has been very positivve - I think Apple is going to come away from the show with a positive reaction from a lot of people.
I am excited about the progress Apple has made in
only 13 short weeks. While they will never be able to
please all of their critics, Apple has at least shown
    they are listening.
That impressed me as well! It seemed like in a short timespan they had added some impressive things, really key things too like the color meter, DPI support, and a very good plan for RAW decoder upgrades (which I'm sure had been in the works for a while before Aperture even shipped).

  • Do I have to run the OS (10.6.3) in 64 bit in order to get full 64 bit benefits of PS CS5?

I keep reading about the benefits of running PS in 64 bit, especially for very large files (which is most of my work). I was under the impression that applications can only use more than ~ 3GB of memory if the operating system is running in 64 bit mode. However I still run mine (Mac OS 10.6.3) in 32 bit (the default mode) and still, in the "Performance" preference panel of PS I can allocate my entire amount of RAM (14GB) for Memory Usage.
Am I getting the full benefits of 64 bit or do I have to run my OS in 64 bit?
Thanks for any bit of advice...

By default Photoshop runs in 64 bit mode. If you want to switch between 32 and 64 bit then you would need to select Applications\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Adobe  Photoshop CS5.app and then press Cmd + I, or click "Get-Info" from File  menu.
In  the Info panel, there would be a checkbox Open in 32 bit mode. Click that and Relaunch Photoshop. It will then run in 32 bit mode. Do reverse(Uncheck that) to run Photoshop in 64 bit mode.

    Hi,
If there is no error after the disk checking, please temporary disable antivirus, update BIOS and device drivers such as hard drive from computer manufacturer’s
    website to check the result.
If the issue persists, I suggest you boot in Safe Mode, and clear the temp folder. Delete every files that can be deleted.
    C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Temp

  • 32 bit Agent causing performance issue on Win 64??

My OS is Windows 2003 64 bit server.
I am using Tomcat as my application server (version 6.0.20)
Java home is set to jdk1.6.0_14 (32bit). My agent is built on a 32bit platform. [I use the agent to gather specific data for profiling on specific commands].
Even if I simply enable the java_opts to load the agent, performance of my application slows down drastically. [Even if the agent does not do anything]. The same works fine when I run the agent on a 32bit machine.
Is this a known issue? Are there any work around for the same?
Any suggestions, help will be greatly appreciated.
