Full Backup of Just One Folder

I have not used TM because I am not a fan of incremental backups. I used Backup 3.0 in the past to do full backups to CD's but now Backup only will do incremental (although the instructions say it can do full backups bit I can not get it to work). I am looking to set up TM to do a full backup each time of just the Documents directory. Can this be accomplished? If not, can someone please explain how to get backup to do a full backup each time to an external HD?
Thanks,
Steve H

Most definitely do not judge Time Machine based on your experience with Backup. The two could hardly be more different and still be called backup apps.
As V.K. says, Time Machine is a whole different breed.

  • Can I add just one folder from an external hard drive to the Time Machine Backup?

I have TM set up to backup my main iMac hard drive.  I have an external hard drive with photos on it that I would like to add to the TM backup as well.  Not the whole hard drive - just one folder with current photos I am working on.

it wouldn't let me "open up" the hard drive to see the contents
Select the volume icon in the Finder and open the Info window. Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your administrator password when prompted. Check the box at the bottom marked
              Ignore ownership on this volume
    Close the Info window.

  • How to create a new full backup alongside existing one?

I have recently reinstalled my MBP from scratch and installed some apps from scratch as well. I still have my old TM backup in a sparsebundle on my NAS (a ReadyNAS NV+).
I now would like to create a complete new full backup alongside my existing one. Or put differently, a new folder/backup inside the Backups.backupdb inside the mounted sparsebundle. Currently I see a folder called "XYZs MacBook Pro". I'd like that to be renamed to something like "XYZs Old MacBook Pro" and create a new full backup under "XYZs MacBook Pro".
I understand you end up having multiple folders inside Backups.backupdb if you have many Macs (with different MAC addresses). I only have one Mac, but want TM to treat my old previous backup (of the same MPB, hence with the same MAC address) as if it was from another Mac (with a different name).
With such a setup, I can still access backups from my previous installation of the same hardware by selecting another volume from TM (by holding Alt when clikcing at the TM icon) or with tools such as Back-In-Time.
Is there any way to achieve this? My sparsebundle is large enough to hold another full backup alongside the old one.
    Thanks

But wait, you said if I erased the disk I get a new UUID. I did not erase it but I moved all files into a /Previous folder (after booting from the install DVD), then installed the system new, and then moved user data (and some Library and some application stuff) back from /Previous. So, I guess, I have no new UUID for my internal disk.
Ah, yes, that is different ("reinstalled from scratch" usually means erased). If the disk was never erased, it will still have the same UUID. But since you've moved or replaced virtually everything, it will all get backed up anyway.
I'm not sure why you did all that; the old +Erase and Install+ and +Archive and Install+ options no longer exist for Snow Leopard: there's just Install, which replaces OSX without touching anything else.
I wanted to have a *really clean* install as my old systems seemed to be messed up with some bad settings.
So, back to my original question: how can I make the new "XYZs MacBook Pro" appear alongside the old "XYZs MacBook Pro" and switch volumes when I start TM using the Option key?
Why would you want to do that? You can view and restore from any backup.
I figured that way I can keep all old backups from the old installation and not have TM retire old stuff. And start a new one from scratch for the new installation where things will get retired. Basically keep the two backups apart from each other and not see any of the old stuff unless explicitly mounted using the option key.
If I follow your approach, what happens to old files of the old disk/UUID? Will they get retired eventually? Would my original idea work as envisioned or would it retire old things nevertheless? If the latter is the case, it is of no use and your suggested approach is the better one.
Is there maybe a ay to force TM to start a new full backup?
Back up to a different place: a different HD or partition, or erase the current one.
Guess that's my only option then. I created a full bootable backup to en external USB disk using Carbon Copy Cloner. Erasing the internal disk and copying back using CCC will create a new UUID then I guess ...
I will try that in the next couple of days and report back here. Thanks a lot for all your help and explanations so far, much appreciated!

  • Can't limit "Find" command to just one folder.  Why?

I'm trying to find some .jpg files within a certain folder where there are thousands of files. So I open that folder, and enter ".jpg" in the search box. But then the name at the top of the window changes from the folder I just opened, to "Searching Mackintosh HD", in other words, it searches the entire computer.
How can I limit the search to just that one folder?

I just figured this out: When I enter the search term, it does default to "Searching Macintosh HD", but on the left side of the search window there is a little button with the name of the folder I had originally opened.
By clicking on that button, it narrows the search to just that folder.

  • How to synchronize just one folder with bookmarks?

Is there any way how to synchronize just one particular folder with bookmarks between different PC? I have found a several options how to synchronize all bookmarks between PCs, but none of them has the option to pick just one particular folder.
    Can you help?

No, it is all or nothing. You can't select which bookmarks folders to sync.

  • Is it possible to make just one folder?

When you connect your ipod to the computer, it works as an USB for the pictures. When I open the folder that contains the pictures (named DCIM) there are several other folders inside it (823WGTMA, 842GGLUF, etc ) with all the pictures I've taken spread between them. I want to know if there's a way to just have one folder in which all the pictures appear in. Like it used to be way before. I don't know if it has to do with the softwares (I have the 5.1.1) I just want to know if it's possible.
Also, my ipod touch's home button doesn't work anymore and I am now using the assitive touch work around, but I want to know it there's a way to reboot the ipod with it? Like normally, I would just hold the home button and the sleep/lock button and the same time untl the apple logo appeared, but since my home button is busted, I wanted to know if there was a way to do it with the assitive touch one. I tried but it just brings me back to the home screem. maybe someone knows another way?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

  • 2 full backup's at one time

    Hello!
We use IBM Tivoli Storage manager for backup our database 11.1.0.7 to SBT_TYPE.
Can we do 2 backups at one time, if we use 2 dsmc schedulers and 2 TYPE's (Not same SBT_TYPEs) - drive's ?
    Backups are full (using RMAN).

We do not delete our full backups for 22 days and do 1 arch copy at month to another device. (and save it for 1 year)
I tested that full backup to SBT_TYPE with archive copies running ok with level1 backup and with incr backup arch files at every 1 hour.
I only intersting is it possible to take 2 backups at 1 time...

I don't want to checkout the whole repository, especially not the dam.

    Hey eggcream,
The contact list "My Contacts" is the list that synchronizes.
You can remove this label in your Gmail contacts from those of whom you do not wish to have synchronized over.

  • How can I sync just one folder of photos

I have created a photo folder which I want to use to sync photos with.  I set up iTunes to sync just that folder.  I added 4 new photos to the folder on my iMac, then tried to sync, butt he photos were not sent to my iPhone.  Why not?

    Hi, cpwdakota.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Make sure the photos in the album are still viewable in iPhoto, delete the iPod photo cache and resync the photos.  If the issue persists, see the second article below.

  • Adding Metadata to folders/ Searching Drive for Keywords not just one folder -  Bridge CC 2014

    Hello Adobe world,
I'm trying to add Metadata to folders not the files. The files in the folders already have metadata and in one folder we have 360 images of the same thing. When I do a keyword search I don't want to go though 20+ sets of 360 duplicate files. I need to do keyword searching for folders. When I have tried adding keywords to the folders I get "the file cannot store xmp metadata" warning. I tried clearing the cache on the file because it said that would help in another forum but it did not help. Does any one know how to fix this? I don't know why we could not assign descriptions or keywords to folders. It would be very useful!!  Some one please help!
as of 2/24/2015 -  This is still unanswered. I want to be able to find files throughout my whole drive based on the metadata tags I put on all my 100,000+ images. These 100,000+ images are dispersed thought out multiple folders. I need to be able to find all the files with specific Metadata tags in common but bridge will not let me search outside of one defined folder? HELP!

  • How do i lock one folder with a password? just one folder individually.

    thanks

The Finder does not let you revoke both read and write permission from yourself, but you can revoke read permission from the GUI. Otherwise you have to use Terminal.
    Get Info on your folder
Under sharing and permissions change privilege to "No Access" for Group & Everyone (probably labeled "Staff" & "Everyone"). Change the permission to Write Only for "Me".
Click the lock to prevent changes.
Now nobody can view the contents of that folder without your account password.
To open the folder get info again, click the lock in the lower right corner, enter your password then change the "Me" permission to Read & Write.

  • Maximum Express full backups per day per Datasource?

I have 3 DB server having 24 databases. Some of these are SIMPLE recovery model and some are FULL. Express full backups are set one in a day at 8:00 PM and Synchronization is set to every 4 hours.
Now customer want to keep backup of every 2 hours. So I have some queries on this.
    1) Its not possible to set EXPRESS full backup after 2 hours. So what should I do here, Should set synchronization frequency to 2 hours?
    2) If I set Synchronization Frequency to 2 hours, it will backup only FULL Recovery model databases only? SIMPLE one will be backed up 8 PM only?
    3) Incremental Backups recovery is only allow to restore Instance? cant be copy to Network folder? As when I tried to restore 4 hours synchronization backup it shows cant be copied, only recovery point associated with express backup will be copied.
4)Based on my understanding, I should change all recovery models to FULL and should set Synchronization to 2 Hours to achieve customer demand. It will allow me to restore 2 hours recovery point to directly Instance or another instance (But not to Network
folder and tape in case of Incremental recovery)
    Am I right? Thoughts!
    Thanks in Advance
    VJay

    See.
My 4 hours Synchronization frequency/Incremental backups are creating recovery points successfully and I can see these from recovery tab. But when I am trying to restore Incremental recovery point, it doesn't allowing me to restore. See in below image, I
am trying to restore Incremental recovery point which was created yesterday at 4:00 PM but its asking me to restore yesterday's 12:20 PM. This incremental backups tooks place after 12:20, doesn't mean anything in terms of recovery!
As my final decision, should I choose EXPRESS Full backup for evry 2 hours and Synchronization just before Express backup for these 24 databases since these are now in FULL model.

  • Can we open more than one  "folder" at a time in Bridge?

When I click on a folder icon, the images appear in the Bridge workspace. Then when I click on another, different, folder icon, the previously displayed images are gone, and only the second folder's images appear. A priori, this seems to be an unnecessary limitation on functionality, and therefore I presume that I just do not know how to do what is called for: To use the functionality of Bridge for more than the contents of only one folder at a time.
Yes, I know that I could, using, say, Windows Explorer, create a sort of "megafolder" into which I copied the contents of several folders, but this seems to be a kludge which should not be necessary.
Did the designers of Bridge not contemplate that users would want to operate on the contents of more than one folder at a time? I presume that I am just ignorant of how to achieve what should be a normal functionality; seeing more than the contents of just one folder at a time.
    Please alleviate my ignorance.

Quick way: Press Ctrl+N (Cmd-N mac) to open a new Bridge window. Open the second folder there.
Not so quick way: Select menu File => New Window. Open the second folder there.
If you MUST view all of the files in one window, all of your files MUST be in folders nested within the same parent folder. In that case:
    1) View the parent folder in bridge.
    2) Open the Filter palette.
    3) Click the microscopic button in the top left corner of the Filter palette, which looks like a folder with a "No" symbol on it. The tooltip label for that button is, "Click to view all items...".

  • Backup of JUST Windows partition (without shared Mac files) on a Mac

I have an iMac running OSX 10.4.10, using VMWare Fusion to run a small (10%) partition with some old but necessary Windows XP 5.1 applications. I want to use a 160 GB external hard drive (Fire Wire and USB both) with a small (10GB) partition to backup just the windows partition (FAT32 formatted) and the remainder (lions...tiger's share) for OSX backup.
I have finally gotten to the point that I can backup each operating system's files on their respective partitions on the same external drive, BUT the windows backup always EXCEEDS the 4GB max file size for the WIndows backup file in FAT32 format, BECAUSE Windows somehow backs up the OSX files ALSO (as "shared files").
Since I already backup the OSX files through OSX, I don't need windows to backup the Mac files. If it only backed up its OWN Windows partition, it would not exceed the FAT32 4GB limit.
I know I can hand-select files for Windows backup to get around this, but I am likely not backing up software and settings.
**What I am looking for is a simple, turn-key way to get a FULL backup of JUST the Windows partition. Can anyone help?

Take a look at the Mac freeware utility WinClone - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • My Laptop crashed. I had a full backup on Carbonite so the iTunes folder is there and downloadable.  Is there any way just to import that and have iTunes on my new computer (Windows 7) recognize it?

My Laptop crashed. I had a full backup on Carbonite so the iTunes folder is there and downloadable.  Is there any way just to import that and have iTunes on my new computer (Windows 7) recognize it?

Nothing gets imported.  Simply restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder to the new/restored computer.
Download and install iTunes from Apple's website.
The first time iTunes is launched, assuming the ENTIRE iTunes folder is restored to the correct location, it will launch and be exactly as it was prior to the comptuer issues.  If for some reason this does not work, close iTunes, hold the SHIFT key while launching iTunes and a prompt will appear to choose or create a new iTunes library.  At this point simply point iTunes to the correct location for the existing iTunes library.
