Full Backup of my Mac Mini OS X  10.8.1

Hello
I've recently purchased the new Mac Mini (i5 model), and take my first steps in Mac world.
I've installed a few applications that i frecvently use and i was thinking to back up, or create an image of my disk ( in windows i had used clonezilla or norton ghost to clone my partition or entire disk ). I don't know if the firmware can be saved also... to go back to my previous os/firmware if i get an upgrade and i don't like it.
I red some discutions about backing up with Time Machine and then restoring with the installer (i don't understand exactly how), but it seems like many got problems with it and files were corrupted when they try to restore.
I've tried the Time Machine and it takes about 9 hours to back up 12Gb on a stick. Not to mention that i cannot use the stick anymore unless i want to restore the system.
Now i have OS X 10.8.1. . I'm thinking of upgrade to 10.8.2. But first i need to back up so i can go back to 10.8.1 if something goes bad...
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks.

Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
     drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
  1. Carbon Copy Cloner
  2. Data Backup
  3. Deja Vu
  4. SuperDuper!
  5. Synk Pro
  6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
  1. Cool Drives
  2. OWC
  3. WiebeTech
  4. Firewire Direct
  5. California Drives
  6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
         button.
     2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
     3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
     4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
         to the Destination entry field.
     5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
         the Source entry field.
     6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
You no longer can upgrade to 10.8.2. The current version is 10.8.4, and you update by downloading and installing 10.8.4 Mountain Lion Update v10.8.4 (Combo).
Firmware is not backed up. Apple does not support "downgrading" firmware.

  • Restoring a time machine backup from a Mac mini to a new Mac mini server

    Hi,
I just replaced a faulty Mac mini with a Mac mini server. I have a time machine backup of my Mac mini and want to transfer it over to the Mac mini. How do I do this?

This is a bit of a guess... But I Imagine you would have to start with the workstation OS install DVD first, and go from there at the appropriate point. Any chance you have or could make a CCC backup instead? I am assuming you could boot a mini server from a backup of mini non-server. Then you could copy it over. This is probably worth a phone call to Apple TAC

  • Alum Mac Mini SLOW after restore from Time Machine backup of 09 Mac Mini

    Hi,
I bought a 2010 Alum Mac Mini (2.4Ghz/2GB/320GB/OS10.6.4) a couple months ago, and I restored it from a time machine backup from my old '08 Mac Mini (1.83ghz/2GB/OS10.6.4). All data moved successfully, but this machine seems 2x slower than my old Mac Mini.
    Issues I'm encountering include:
    iDisk sync extremely slow
    launching Apps slow
Trouble handling more than 3 or 4 open apps (Chrome, iTunes, Pages, Numbers)
Is it possible that this is an issue because of restoring from the backup?
    Thanks in advance!
PS - I'm a fairly intermediate-advanced user, no programming background, but solid on most other things.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If you still have the TM backup, I would suggest erasing the new Mac mini's HDD and doing a fresh install from its Install DVD and then do a migration of the TM backup rather than a clone. There is something in that clone that the new mini does not like.
You could also, as an alternative, try installing Mac OS X from the Install DVD over the top of the clone and see if it fills in the gap or corrects whatever the new mini does not like. This should not touch your data, just install Mac OS X Snow Leopard over the version already there. But you should always make a backup of anything that is not backed up.

  • Which Backup Batterie in Mac mini Late09?

    Good morning guys,
Sorry, I hope my question was not there before, I was unfortunately not find the search.
My Mac mini makes Late09 so for some time, some funny business. (Dual Drive soundat startup). So I thought, I'll try to change the backup battery. My mini is now a little over two years and usually keep these batteries even longer, but the Mac when Idisconnect from the mains every night they could really be empty already.
Google me has unfortunately not really helped, because there is talk of a button cellCR2032 with 3.6 V. However, I find on Amazon, for example, only cells with 3 volts.
Of course, I could crack my mini look back and exactly what was used for a battery, but anyone who has ever opened a Mac mini has the old type who does not like howsomething like this one does and what an ordeal it can be for the nerves. I also want toopen the mini only if I change the battery and the same can.
So I turn to you experts here and wanted to ask what should I take for a battery? Whatis used to build a battery in the mini and what voltage they must have 3 V or 3.6 V
Via a feedback I'd appreciate real

  • Full HD 3D with Mac mini/AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics?

I am able to output full HD 3D (1080p frame packing) with my 2011 MacAir. I used SwitchResX to define a new resolution of 2205 x 1920 for a 3D beamer that is connected via an HDMI adapter. The beamer recognizes this format as 3D and displayes the 2 packed frames as 3D.
I wonder if the same is possible with the Mac mini with AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics. It SHOULD work the same way, but only if this is ensured, I will buy one.

    Hi skampi77,
here are the SwitchResX settings that work for an Onkyo AV receiver, and for an JVC 3D beamer (sorry for the German):
I connected the 3D beamer either directly or via the Onkyo AV receiver to the HDMI or (via an adapter) to the DVI output of the Mac mini. And, indeed, the output is in both cases HDMI 1.4a.
I can output full HD 3D images and video. For slide shows, I use a beta version of Graphics Converter v8 ( I asked Torsten Lemke to implement the frame packing format. Please contact him to get access to the beta version, even for testing purposes). This version has in the slide show settings a box "convert output to frame packing" that has to be checked. For video, I use Bino <http://bino3d.org>. In Bino frame packing output is one of the options.
In both cases, one has to switch to the frame packing format before Graphics Converter or Bino is started.
It is helpful to use one of the outputs (DVI or HDMI) for the "control screen", and the other for the 3D output that is switched to full HD frame packing format.
    I hope this helps.
    Cheers, Reiner

  • External USB drive as backup for multiple Mac-minis

I have a network with two Mac-minis on it. On one Mac-mini (#1) I have an external drive (250GB) hooked up to the USB port and use it as a backup drive using the Time Machine function. However, when I try to setup the other Mac-mini (#2) to use this drive for backup, Time Machine does not allow me to have the external drive on Mac-mini (#1) as a choice for backup. I do have the drive shared and can see the drive from the other mac-mini (#2).
    Any suggestions?

First, you really should partition the drive, so TM on each Mac has it's own, exclusive space. See #4 and 6 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Note that each partition will be shown separately, so make sure the one you want to use with Mini #2 is setup for Sharing. Then on Mac #2, connect to Mac #1 and to the specific partition using Finder.
Go to Time Machine Preferences and select the external drive as the TM drive.
Add that external drive in System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items  (drag the connected drive from the desktop to the Login Items list.
I don't know if it's the same with sharing, but if there's still a problem, it may be connected to one or more of the names of things in the network. Try the solution in #C9 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

  • How can I get full resolution from my Mac mini?

I have a Mac mini (Late 2014) and an LG 27MP35HQ-B monitor. I’m using an HDMI / mini-DisplayPort (Thunderbolt) cable.
The 27MP35HQ-B supports resolution of 1920 x 1080. The Mac mini supports resolution of 1920 x 1080 using the HDMI port and up to 2560 x 1600 via the mini-DisplayPort.
But the best resolution I see on the Displays Preferences menu for the Mac mini is 1600 x 900. Any suggestions on what I can do to up the resolution?

  • How can i copy my data files from a windows backup to mac mini

I recently purchased a mac mini and waiting on its arrival.  I am converting from WinXP and my current system is not working at the moment (started smelling smoke one day and the video hasn't displayed since from the PC - so its been shut down).  I can easily fix whatever the issue is with the PC - however - my question is.  I perform periodic backup of my data files to an external drive with Windows Backup, can I restore my files from the Windows Backup to the Mac Mini?  If I don't have to fix the PC - I can save that cost and buy an CD drive for the Mini (or something else).
I haven't investigated the real problem on the PC - I just know its hardware related (not OS).
My last backup was atleast 1 month ago - so I know I might lose a couple of things....but not very much.  If its "simplier" for the migration process to fix the PC - then that is the answer but if I can extract from the external 1TB Seagate.  I think I only have 50GB of data (itunes / pictures / etc)
    Thanks

  • Mac Mini Server Backups

    Dear all,
I am using a Mac Mini Server for filesharing, iCal, etc. I want to make sure all data is safe, so I want regular backups. The Mac Mini Server is set up to work on Disk 1 and backup on Disk 2. But in case the server is stolen, crashes or something similar this set up is pretty useless.
Therefor I am investigating different possibilities to back up safely. I have two option I want to investigate further, however I'm not sure what's possible and what not.
    1. I have a second Mac Mini Server available. Is it possible to have the primary Mac Mini Server backup on the secondary Mac Mini Server?
    2. Is it possible to run backups on an external server? E.g. FTP.
    Thanks in advance!
    Nick

This is what I would do.
I would repartition the server to use software RAID 0.
What this would do is mirror both hard drives. Lets say one day that one of the hard drives failed, its ok because all you would have to do is put a new hard drive in and you are back online.
This means you will not have to deal with any down time.
For backups you could run Carbon Copy Clone to an external hard drive. This will make an exact clone of your hard drive that you can even boot too!
You can bring this off site for better data protection.

  • Mac Mini late 2012 Failed to Restore Time Machine Backup

Try to restore time machine backup to my mac mini. I have made backup right after I got the machine from apple. Now due to some reason I am trying to restore it but failing again and again. Error is something like this:
I have erase disk as default which is required for intel based model but still it didn't work. Please help me out.
Further I have also tried installing fresh 10.8 OSX by making bootable usb. It also didn't work. A question mark appears right after I select USB Bootable Drive at start.
    Thanks

Yes same. When I try booting MBP with same usb it goes to recovery menu, (one which comes when you press Cmd+R) I think my MBP is running mavricks thats why it dont go to 10.8 setup. Further when I select same usb in mac mini it shows following screen.

  • Moving boot disk to new Mac Mini?

I've an old circa-2007 or 2008 Mac Mini (Intel Core 2 Duo) running 64-bit OS X 10.8.4, and using an SSD as boot disk and an external Drobo array for most of my data.  I just ordered new quad-core Intel Core i7 Mac Mini to replace it.  When it arrives, I plan to ditch hard drive it comes with and move SSD from my old Mac Mini into it.  If I simply move boot SSD from my old Mini to new one, will it simply boot and work?  Or will I need to do some magic to get it to boot properly?  Or shold I start preparing for re-install and restore from backup workflow?

    Alex-- wrote:
Well, I have 10.8.4 already installed on the boot disk I want to move to newer mini, and late-2012 mini shipped with 10.8.1.  So I guess I should be fine on that part.
Not necessarily, the original build versions are different.
What worries me most is: When OS X is installed, will all the drivers and/or other hardware specific components be installed, or does the installer only install compnents needed by hardware at the time of installation?
I would setup the new Mini, move whatever into it's existing drive and then erase and copy all of that to the SSD before installing it into the Mini.
Replacing disk in mini (including late-2012 model) is non-trivial, but doable.  Why on earth Apple makes replacing disk so hard is beyond me; disks die way too often (i.e. disks are consumables), meaning users have real and legitimate need to be able to easilly replace them.  Yet something that is easy 5-minute task that requires only Philips #2 screwdriver with average PC tends to be an full evening project with Mac Mini.  Sigh.  At least it seems 2012 models doesn't require creative use of putty knife like my old Mini required.
The unibody models from 2010 on are easier to work on than the older ones.

I'm not trying to be a party pooper or anything here, but personally I wait until the warranty is up on my Mac's and Mac Mini's before doing anything more than upgrading RAM.

  • Does TC give Extra HDD space for Mac Mini?

I use MAC Mini and its HDD is getting close to full. Purchasing Time Capsule means I have extra more HDD for Data? or Is just for the Backup. What should I get for extra HDD space?

Time Capsule is designed for your backups.
If the Mac Mini needs more storage space, you might be able to pull the internal hard drive and add a higher capacity drive. A shop can give you the details on this.
Another option would be to add an external drive to the Mini connected by USB or FireWire. Buy as much capacity as you can, especially if you plan to add movies, music, photos. etc.  Drives seem to have a way of filling up much faster than might have expected.
If you decide to get the TIme Capsule for backups, it will backup both the Mac Mini and the external hard drive.
(If you do not have backups, there will almost surely be a day when you wish you did).

  • I have a WD My Passport for Mac (2 TB).  It quit backing up my mac mini (8/2013) stating that it needed to be repaired.  Our IT person reformatted it.  Now time machine states that it can't back up 234 GB,  because there's not enough space.

I have erased the passport for Mac and started all over. When there is ~15 minutes left in the initial backup of the mac mini hard drive (234 GB total), it gets weird and time machine states that it it calculating the time remaining.  24 hours later, it is still backing up but shows that <200 GB of 2 TB are available and it quits backing up stating that there is not enough room.  HELP!  The WD My Passport for Mac and the Mac mini are less than a year old.

I synced my ipad2 with an asus laptop. Now I have a Mac mini that I want to use for syncing and backup. But when I connected my ipad to the Mac mini it said something about the ipad being already synced to another computer and backup is permitted only one computer at a time. How can I transfer my backup to the Mac mini ? And delete my previous (I.e. asus laptop) iTunes backup system?

You don't have to delete anything from the Asus. You can copy your iTunes library from the laptop to the Mac. Read this for more information.

  • Time Machine Dies on Mac mini with new, Mac-formatted USB HD

I purchased a new Western Digital 'My Book' 500GB USB external hard drive and connected it to a G4 Mac mini running the latest Leopard version. Right out of the box, I erased the external USB drive and reformatted it with Disk Utility to 'Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)'. The partition map is set to 'Apple Partition Map' with 'Read/Write' status...all looks good so far, right?
The moment the USB drive reformats, a Time Machine dialogue box pops open (this is good!) and asks if I want to use this new drive as my backup drive for Time Machine. I say "OK".
About a half hour later, Time Machine begins is first total backup of the Mac mini. After about 4 to 7 GB (it is different each time), Time Machine either quits or hangs up. When it quits, if you go to System Prefs>Time Machine, it shows that Time Machine has no backup drive to talk to. When it hangs up, you just see the spinning beach ball.
I have reformatted the drive a bunch of times, but have never gotten it to work. I read in the Apple help section (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306932) that I may have a Master Boot Record partition type, and will try that next.
Please let me know if you can help, and I will report back how the MBR partition cleanup goes.
    Thanks,

Pondini's site is excellent, but didn't happen to cover this problem (or Mavericks in particular as of yet). But I did call AppleCare support as you suggested, rkaufman87, where I was quickly escalated since I'd already tried the things the first tier support people start with. After some investigation via screen sharing and inspection of my system log (which suggested the stall involved issues with the index) the main change we made was to clear out the Time Machine preference files and Spotlight's cache before rebooting and trying again. This time the backup completed without stalling, and has continued to work ever since. Thanks for encouraging me to call support!
