Full Backup stops before it starts
trouble backing up catalog with PSE8 on 64bit Windows 7
Step 1 - I select Full Backup
it starts calculating total media size, gets to 25% and then shuts down program without any warning/reason.
Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks,
Randy
John,
I run the "connect missing files" app and it gives me a blank list
- it doesn’t say no missing files, but it doesn’t show any (not sure if that is normal)
I run full backup again and get it still shuts down at 25% (organizer shuts down completely)
I've uninstalled and reinstall it but same thing
Randy

I am working with a client who is attempting to backup to a NAS device
The device is a linksys NSS6000 (Cisco device).
It’s a dual 1Gbit LAN device that supports CIFS / FTP and NFS transfers. It has only 1Gbit lan connected.
The device has 4 * 500 gb sata drives in raid 1 attached.
Cables go from cat 5 to fiber back to cat5. (The NAS is located at a neighboring office) The switches are 1gbit.
Server is a win2k8r1 fully up to date.
When backing up to the NAS device, the following error occurs:
Running backup of volume Local Disk(D:), copied (86%).
Running backup of volume Local Disk(D:), copied (90%).
Running backup of volume Local Disk(D:), copied (94%).
Running backup of volume Local Disk(D:), copied (98%).
Backup of volume Local Disk(D:) completed successfully.
Backup stopped before completing.
Summary of backup:
Backup stopped before completing.
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
If we redirect the backup to a folder on a 2008 share, the backup completes successfully.
Only when backing up to the linksys NSS6000 does the error occur.
No other backup processes are writing to the NAS device so I can't understand why the process thinks the file is
being used by another process.
One thing we did notice that when the backup to the NAS device occurs, throughput is about 150 mbit average
On the 2008 server shares we successfully backup to, the through put is 500 mbit. Not sure if that is important, but
might be worth mentioning.
The following event log entry was noted at the end of the backup.
The description for Event ID '519' in Source 'Microsoft-Windows-Backup' cannot be found.
The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display the message,
or you may not have permission to access them. The following information is part of the
event:'2009-05-12T10:13:31.617Z', '', '2147942432', '%%2147942432'
Any ideas?
Thanks..MichaelI am also seeing the same problem backing up nightly to a brand new NAS device (WD My Book Live)
All the error codes are the same as those in this thread.
From Windows Event Viewer:
The backup operation that started at '2011-03-25T06:00:19.811302700Z' has failed with following error code '2147942432' (The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.). Please review the event details
for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Time Machine Freezes during full backup
I just got a new MacBook Pro. I am trying to create an initial Time Machine full backup.
The process freezes after processing 6.39GB out of 462.76GB. Further, Time Machine
also globally freezes after the following steps:
Reboot
Try full backup
-- it freezes
Stop backup
-- backup stops
Try to start backup again
TimeMachine is now completely frozen. Further, all the top-right menus seem frozen.
Try to restart machine
Machine cannot completely shutdown -- it stays in a zombie state trying to shutdown forever
Force shutdown (pressing power button continously until the machine shuts down).
I've tried this process about 10 times.
Same behavior using 4 different types of backup disks.
(network attached via afs, direct usb, direct fire-wire).
Here's the console output is below.
The "freezing" seems to coincide with the output of:
"kernel[0]: AppleVTD: waiting space (512)"
Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?
Thanks!
Luis.

=====Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -

Time Machine full backup started... why!?
Installed Mavericks, played around a bit, time machine was behaving normally until today.
I thought the usual backup was starting, not so many changes since last one, maybe a couple of giga of new photos to add but Time Machine decided instead to delete the whole content and start from scratch.
My time machine disk is 1.5TB my full backup will be under 1.20TB, and again Mavericks was already backing up normally since I installed that... so what caused this absurd behaviour?
If this is not a bug, what else? Because of this at the moment I have no backup, time machine is working and if I am lucky it'll take one full day or two to have a backup again.troyboy65 wrote:
I dont understand why when the total of the 2 machines only totals 500gb
Time Machine keeps copies of everything currently on your Mac, plus copies of things you've changed or deleted. It varies widely depending on how you use your Mac, but Time Machine generally needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up, to be able to keep a reasonable "depth" of backups for you.
Is there some settings i need to change or is something wrong?
Probably neither.
If both Macs are running Snow Leopard, you may be getting notices like the one in the blue box in #C4 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting. You can stop those notices if you want.
If either is on Leopard, it's a different story. When Time Machine on a Mac running Leopard runs out of room, and the +Warn when old backups are deleted+ option is checked, it fails with a message like the one in the tan box in #C4. Remove the check from the box, and it will start deleting old backups.
But if you're getting the message in the pink box, something is likely wrong. See the suggestions and explanations there. -
Does RMAN trigger checkpoint before a full backup?
Hello,
My test as follows:
1 insert some data to a table
2 backup full database using rman
3 shutdown abort
4 delete all datafiles(including redo logs)
5 restore and recover database
6 the inserted data can still be found.
I think RMAN triggers checkpoint before a full backup, but I can't verify it,can someone help me?

Thanks.Dear user!
As Mr. Baker already stated in his very friendly way RMAN fires a checkpoint before a backup. You may verify it like that:
1.) Use v$datafile_header to get the checkpoint_time of an arbitrary datafile. In my example I've used datafile number 8.
SELECT file#, name, TO_CHAR(checkpoint_time, 'dd.mm.yyyy HH24:MI:SS') as checkpoint_time
from v$datafile
where file# = 8;
FILE#
NAME
TO_CHAR(CHECKPOINT_
8
/u01/app/oracle/oradata/ORCL/myts1000_01.dbf
17.06.2009 06:58:312.) Export your NLS_DATE_FORMAT environment variable like that:
set NLS_DATE_FORMAT='DD.MM.YYYY HH24:MI:SS'3.) Start RMAN and backup datafile number 8
BACKUP DATAFILE 8;
Starten backup um 17.06.2009 06:58:29
Kontrolldatei der Zieldatenbank wird anstelle des Recovery-Katalogs verwendet
Zugewiesener Kanal: ORA_DISK_1RMAN will show the time when it started the backup.
4.) Query again v$datafile_header like you did in step 1.
SELECT file#, name, TO_CHAR(checkpoint_time, 'dd.mm.yyyy HH24:MI:SS') as checkpoint_time
from v$datafile
where file# = 8;
FILE#
NAME
TO_CHAR(CHECKPOINT_
8
/u01/app/oracle/oradata/ORCL/myts1000_01.dbf
17.06.2009 06:58:31As you can see the last checkpoint_time of datafile 8 is near to the startingtime of the backup.
I hope that's what you wanna know.
Yours sincerely

I just had a new, larger hard drive installed in my imac. It appears that TMkl is starting a full backup, rather than incremental on top of the previous backup. Should I allow it to finish? or should I stop the new backup and reformat or erase external drive and start again? If I let this one continue, I will have a double backup on my external drive.

yes, this will happen with a new drive.

this is up to you. if you don't particularly need the old backups I would erase the backup drive and start backups afresh. -
HT1175 Time Machine wants to start with a new, full backup instead of using the existing one
Hi, my Time Machine wants to start a new, full backup, instead of continuing with the existing one on the time Capsule.
Looking a the Troubleshooting guide, I've found the following piece of info, which is, as 99% of the times with the troubleshooting guides, totally useless to resolve my problem...
Message: Time Machine starts a new, full backup instead of a smaller incremental backup
There are three reasons why this may occur:
You performed a full restore.
Your Computer Name (in Sharing preferences) was changed--when this happens, Time Machine will perform a full backup on its next scheduled backup time.
If you have had a hardware repair recently, contact the Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store that performed your repair. In the meantime, you can still browse and recover previous backups by right-clicking or Control-clicking the Time Machine Dock icon, and choosing "Browse Other Time Machine disks" from the contextual menu.
It should be noted (hence the uselessness of the guide) that:
-I haven't performed ANY full restore
- I havent changed my computer name
- My computer has not had ANY repair, much less a hardware repair. Neither recently, nor in the 9 months I've owned it.
Which puts me back to square one, with the marginal improvement that now I have a way of browsing my old backups.
In the event I decide to start all over again, will there be a way for me to "sew" the two backup files?
Or will I always have to go the silly way around?
Anybody has any idea?
Thank you for your time (machine/capsule, your choice;-)Hi John,
no, that doesn't have anything to do with my problem.
Just look at the image below.
Time Machine thinks that the disk I've always used to do my backups has none of them.
If I open the disk with Finder, obviously they are where they should be.
It is even possible to navigate them as per the instruction reported above, but even following Pondini's advice #s B5 and B6 (which are more applicable to my problem) didn't solve the problem.
Actually, not being a coder, I'm always scared of doing more damage than good when I have a Terminal window open.
My question is: how is it possible that Apple hasn't thought of some kind of user command to tell the idiotic Time Machine software that a hard disk backup is a hard disk backup, no matter what?
Estremely frustrating and annoying: I'm wasting HOURS in trying to find a solution to a problem that should not have arisen in the first place...
Have a nice weekend

Hello all, I could use some help with my iPhone 4, I hope this is the best place to ask!
The Problem:
I want to do a full backup of my iphone to either itunes or to icloud. Unfortunately the iphone got wet and isn’t working properly. The phone turns on and still works, but the touch screen no longer works. I have a passcode lock on the phone so iTunes will not allow me to backup it up until I type in the passcode (which I cannot physically do). WiFi had been turned off before it got wet so it won’t connect to any known WiFi networks either to backup automatically to iCloud.
What happened:
I had been travelling for 6 months and went tubing on a river with my iphone in a dry bag. Unfortunately the dry bag failed and filled with water ruining my iphone.
What I’d like to do:
It’s an old phone and I was planning on buying a new iPhone anyway. I would love to do a full backup to either iCloud or to my computer so when I get a new iPhone I don’t lose anything. I’ve already connected it to my PC and downloaded all the photos and videos off the phone so at least I haven’t lost that, but I would like to be able to recover all the text messages, WhatsApp messages and notes I had created during my 6 months of travel.
The last time it was backed up to my pc or to icloud was in April, so there are 6 months worth of very meaningful data I would love to keep to remind me of my travels!
Is there anyway to force a full backup of the iPhone without typing in my passcode lock or is there anyway to force it to connect to a WiFi network so the phone can backup to iCloud??
iTunes recognizes the phone just now and I tried upgrading the phone to iOS7 in the hopes that it would first backup and then upgrade. Unfortunately all that happened is the phone upgraded to iOS7, but it didn’t backup to iTunes. Now the phone is stuck at the iOS7 welcome screen and I can’t do anything else with it.
Any ideas or tips would be welcome!
NOTE: This is NOT a jailbroken iPhone. If there is no other way around this, is there anyway to completely wipe the phone then??
The Apple store agreed to give me a new iPhone 4 as a warranty replacement for $150 (I travel a lot and I have a factory unlocked phone, so this is still worth it for me). But before I trade it in, I would like to make sure all my data is backed up on the device first.
When I try and restore the phone now on iTunes, it says I have to turn off Find My iPhone on the phone first before I can restore it. Now since I can't use the screen I can't really do that.
So how do I completely wipe the iPhone???
Thanks! -
I recently did a full reinstall from my time machine and now my MacBook pro won't back up to the time machine. It starts a full backup ignoring the original back up, can anyone help?
Did you follow the instructions on the page linked below?
OS X Yosemite: Recover your entire system -
Most of the time siri works fairly well, but there are a good amount of times where it just stops "listening" and starts searching. Like ill say Find directions to...and it jumps ahead and starts searching before i can say where i want directions too. ***.
There are a few reasons why siri will stop listening:
1. It is having problems connecting to the network so can't search for what you are looking for. You are prompted with something like: I am sorry I can't connect right now.
2. There is a pause when you are dictating something to siri so it assumes you are done. Pauses of about 2 or 3 seconds should do it.
3. You accidentally press the siri button indicating you are done dictating to siri.
If none of these are the problem, I don't know what else to do. How often is this occuring? -
In which order have i to restore my catalog:start whith full backuo, then 1st, 2., 3., ... inkrementelle backup or start whith 3. inkrementell, then 2., 1., an finally full backup?
Andaleeb,
Thanks,
I think your answer about the order of incremental backups for restoration should be included in the link you provided.
The only hint about that is :
" Note:
If you selected Restore From CD/DVD, Elements Organizer prompts you if more than one disc is required to restore a catalog. Follow the onscreen instructions, which differ depending on whether you’re restoring a single backup set or a single backup set plus one or more incremental back ups."
Especially because starting from the most recent incremental backup is exactly the contrary to what most users would expect.
Following onscreen instructions is good, but when those instructions go against what is expected... . -
I upgraded to IOS5 and have lost my contacts and other app profiles - is there any way to get them back from the backup taken before the IOS5 process started?
Thanks but have tried that - When I try to restore I get a -50 error and into a loop of taking another back up. I took a copy of the back up before the IOS upgrade and have it stored on my desk top but I cannot get Itunes to restore to that back up
Any ideas how I can do this? -
Took full backup before factory reset, but restore hasn't given much back
Hi,
Due to having trouble (suspected software) with my home button, I got a full reset at the genius bar.
Because I knew that was likely, I took a full backup on my PC via iTunes. iTunes said that doing so would take a complete copy of my iPad.
On bringing my iPad back from the shop, I restored from the backup, but I now only have a handful of apps and little if any of the content.
I had essential stuff also backed up via iCloud, so this isn't a disaster, but I'm rather surprised that a "complete" backup would actually only entail about 5% of what was on there, and I'm wondering whether I've missed something as I suspect the weak link here may be me.
Any bright ideas?
Many thanks.
Tom.Is this how you did the restore?

I've tried turning it off and then back on as well as a hard reset. This problem predated the IOS 6.1 update and remained after the update. I assume I can bypass this by updating the apps with the phone plugged into the computer, but I'd prefer to

Problems with Camera Raw 6.7 after upgrading to OS 10.8
I've been using Photoshop CS 5 with Camera Raw 6.7 on my MacBook Pro with no issues until I recently upgraded to OS 10.8. Now my Canon CR2 files (shot with a Canon G15) won't open. Does anyone know of a solution or work-around for this problem?
