Full colour translation of Pantone: CS vs Pantone

Hi there,
I never got around to ask this question. Most of you have noticed that ID, AI and PS give different full colour translations of a Pantone colour. And then there's Pantone who says something completely different on their colour fans. Now who's right, and for CS which of the 3 is the most accurate? I'm working with CS 5.5 Master, my Pantone colour fans are 4th Edition, 2nd printing.
TIA.

ID, AI and PS give different full colour translations of a Pantone colour
If you are looking at solid ink libraries then you have to compare the Lab values, which do match between the three programs as long as you are comparing the same libraries.
If you are converting the Lab swatch values to CMYK or RGB the results depend on the document's profile, or the current working color spaces if there's no document profile.
So if you look at Photoshop's Color Picker and pick  Pantone Purple, you get different CMYK or RGB values depending on the current Color Setting's Working Spaces and conversion options. Below is US SWOP Coated/AdobeRGB vs. Japan Coated/sRGB—note  the Lab values don't change and are the same values you would get in ID or AI.
US SWOP Coated CMYK, AdobeRGB
Japan Coated CMYK, sRGB
Pantone has recommended CMYK translations, but the values would have to be for one particular set of printing conditions. No translation would work for Pantone Purple because that color is out of the CMYK gamut.

  • How to merge colour-separated PostScript into full-colour PDF?

    Hi there
I have a PostScript file that consists of four pages, one for each of the CMYK colour separations. I’d like to merge these pages into a single full-colour page. Any ideas on how to do this?
Creating a new PDF in Acrobat or with Distiller creates the four-page PDF. I’m sure I could figure out how to do it with PhotoShop, but I don’t want to rasterise it and I’d like to work out how to do it efficiently, as I’ll need to do this to a whole lot of other files as well.
I’d appreciate any advice or pointers to other resources. I’ve haven’t found much at all in my searching.

There is no direct way to do this with any Adobe products. You are effectively trying to undo the separation process that created the pages you have. To do this other than via rasterization with Photoshop would require software that could analyze each of the objects on each of the separations and combine matching text, vector, and raster objects back into single objects with the color values taken from the separations.
Conceivably you could make each page into a layer and turn on overprint for absolutely all objects in each layer, although this would yield a rather awkward PDF file that might not give you the results you are looking for.

My old HP 2800 suddenly began printing not in full colour - I replaced the colour cartridges, still not full colour printing - then replaced printer heads - still not full colour printing - everything is in black and shades of blue. Please help

    Hi melissaccss,
I see you have replaced a cartridge and can no longer print black ink. I appreciate the troubleshooting you have done so far, but please take a look at the following document to see if you have done all that can be done; Fixing Ink Streaks, Faded Prints, and Other Common Print Quality Problems.

  • 3 Colour T-Shirt design from full colour image

    Hi
I am designing a T Shirt for my ski club.
I have taken an image from a banner (made in illustrator, full colour image attached) and I want to devide into a 3 colour image for the t shirt (I am only allowed 3 colours for printing).
The colours I want to use are black, white and purple. The colour of the t shirt is a light blue.
I want to then put the purple logo on top of the white and black too.
So I'm after a black and white grunge background with a punchy purple logo on the top.
All of this should be on a tranparent or, for design purposes, light bue (same as T Shirt colour) background.
So my question is how to split a full colour image into using only 3 (4 including transparent/light blue background) exact colours.
If I were going to black and white I might convert to grey scale and then paint areas to fully white or fully black using an overlay brush I don't think this helps me for more than just black and white though.
I have attached two of my attempts where I used the colour range selection and level adjustments. Niether was really successful though (one does not use the right colours or number of colours but looks quite cool).
Also I would obviously like to keep it as dynamic as possible to allow me to make little tweaks and changes at the end.
I hope this is clear enough with the attached images too.
    Thanks in advance,
    Simon

I achived this by inverting your source image, shifting hue 180 degrees, saving for web as png8, changing number of colors to 4, and changinf one of the colrs to white, then changing
another color two black.   you then have a 4 color png that can be seperated cleanly back in photoshop.
I know its not exaclty how you wanted it as the shirt background should be blue and not white as is my example. But you can probably use this method to create what you want quickly.

  • Pantone C and Pantone U looks like the same

    Hello all,
Sorry for poor english, and thank you for support.
    I am using CS5, Mac (OS 10.6.8)
when I use the color PANTONE, I find out that Both C and U display as the same
but on my colleague CS6, C and U are in great different.
and when he open the file I pass to him, it shows 2 different color for the same pantone code
    here are my questions
    1. is that a bug or not?
    - so is that affect the output?I mean, if it display as very similar, will the output looks very different as a result?
(I mean, if both of us output the same files, will it becomes different?we mostly output as large PDF file for output)
    2. is there any method that can make CS5 and CS6 output same color when we output as JPG (RGB)?
    Thanks and Best Regards,
    Aki

Technically speaking, both Pantone 100C and Pantone 100U would look exactly the same.  The ink formulas are identical.  The only that is different is the paper used on press.  The only reason a "U" is specified is so the prepress people will have plates identified correctly for the type of paper planned on press.
    here are my answers
    1. is that a bug or not?

No.  It's not a bug.  You both could use different Pantone representative colors or the same Pantone represented colors in your file and they would output the same.  The only difference would be the paper you use.
    2. is there any method that can make CS5 and CS6 output same color when we output as JPG (RGB)?
Not enough space here to explain it.  Get Adobe's Print Publishing Guide.  If you output a JPG in RGB, you would have to rasterize the Pantone spot color file and then match specific Pantone colors in Photoshop using the same RGB Working Space, Color Settings, and specific RGB conversion colors in both the CS5 and CS6 versions.

  • CMYK Pantone breakdowns different Pantone Color Bridge

I was wanting to know why the color breakdown that Indesign gives for a Spot Pantone color is different to the one specified in a Pantone Color Bridge book. Also the color on screen that Pantone Color Bridge breakdowns show seems more accurate than the ones specified by Indesign.
Any ideas on this or articles that can explain this?
    Thanks

One last thing. If I use the 'Standard Lab values for spots' in Ink manager which gives me a better on screen reproduction of a color then I should do the same in Illustrator under 'Spot colour Options' in the swatches palette.
Lab might give you a better on screen preview of Pantone Solid inks (spot color, not CMYK), especially if the color is out of the CMYK gamut.
Lab doesn't necessarily give you a better preview of how the color would convert to process CMYK. If you want a preview of how a Lab color would convert to CMYK, you could check both Use Standard Lab... and All Spots To Process in Ink Manager.

  • I have an epson printer epson stylus office BX625 FWD that will only print in black and white on my PC it prints full colour

i am unable to print in colour only black and white where as my PC prints all day in colour

What does airprint have to do with printing in bw vs in color? The user hasn't even stated which printing method they use.
I watched your video the other week after seeing you post it in a thread where you also suggested to it to be the solution. The video could not have been more off topic and was the biggest waste of anybody's time. So it is completely suspect when you keep injecting your youtube video in several threads.
There's a few things that changed when it comes to printing and scanning in Yosemite.
The first order of business is that users should get the latest driver for their device/printer/scanner. That will get them up and running before they even finished taking notes while watching videos.

  • Getting a full colour PDF to print in just Black

Is it possible [other than changing your pc print settings] to force a PDF  document, that is in colour, to print in 'black and white' and only print in colour if this  setting is overridden?
    Any help much appreciated.

To print always in black & white, you will need to change a couple of settings in the print dialogue that opens when you select print.
1 - In the print window select Advanced, the first options should be   for Output, where it says Color you will need to change that setting to Composite Gray in the drop down menu.
2 - In the same Advanced settings window you should find a drop down at the top that says Custom, with a button next to it that says Save As...
Save the setting you have just changed and name it something you will understand i.e. - Moll's Black/White. With this new setting selected click OK.
3 - Back in the original Print window is a menu called Presets... again select Save As and name it something you understand. With that Preset selected click Print.
That should do it, now whenever you need to print something black and white just select the Preset you have just created in the Print window and then Print. The settings should all remain and your print will be black and white.

  • JPG's not displaying full colour in Bridge

When I import the images from my Nikon D300s Camera into Photoshop Bridge CS4 the images seem to be a coldish blue color when browsing them, this has only happened with the newiMac 2013 that I have just purchased, it all works fine in my earlier iMac 2009 model, I have checked that the settings are the same as the earlie one and all seems to be ok, when I open them up in photoshop the color returns, I have set everything up as Adobe RGB even on the camera but still not right. I have tried Tiff's and they are fine in bridge same as the RAW files, it is just the jpgs that don't look right. has anyone got any ideas what is wrong. If I open them in Raw and touch them up then open them in photoshop and save them as PSD files they are fine. any idea's.

Here is a link to the site. The homepage doesn't have any
dynamic jpgs so you will have to click the '7 TranScan' button
(this is the bottom button within the menu down the right-hand
    side).
This will take you to the '7 Transcan' homepage where one of
the problem jpgs is not displaying. As you'll see it won't display
at all within Flash Player 8 but displays fine in Flash Player 9.

  • Gradient problems with stepping single and full colour

Hi, just wondering is anyone else is having problems on printed
jobs with the gradient having definite steps between the
different tints. We had no problems with CS3, but since updating to CS4 we
have had jobs showing this stepping problem. Has Indesign changed settings?
Any help would be appreciated I have checked all the the PDF settings as our RIP works from the PDF's to create the plates. The RIP is a Harlequin Rip.

    GrahamHe wrote:
We don't actually rip the files. We are a pre-press/production department in an Agency. We do ensure that the files we deliver to the printer are 100% clean. Our problem with exporting is that if you have a gradient, as InDesign splits up large images into small pieces when writing the PDF we have seen single images that have different resolutions. We even had one file where 99% of the image was 350 dpi, and a small part 100 dpi.
It could be that CS4 has fixed these problems and am willing to try it out, but am very wary of exporting.
InDesign only splits things up when you flatten, as far as I know. If you use an unflattened format, PDF1.4 or higher, there is no flattening, so the problem may well be in HOW you are exporting. Of course, it sounds like you do ads, and I send flattened ads to publications myself because I don't trust that they know how or have the technology to handle a proper transparent PDF, but I don't distill, and I try to avoid situations that would cause problems to begin with.
Take a look at the Transparency Flattener Preset you are using when you export. I believe the default is [Medium Resolution] which has a gradient resolution of 150 ppi. If possible, save your distiller settings as a .joboptions file and use that to export the same file and compare the distilled and exported versions.

  • Using anything other than full colour mode in screen sharing

Hi, I have an iphone with jaadu on it that I use for screensharing. I used to use vine server, but I was having a lot of problems for it, so I reverted back to using Leopard's screensharing feature, which I like because it runs discreetly in the background.
However, what I was wondering, is how I can change the quality mode to something like greyscale or 8 bit. I know its possible to make my computer greyscale in UA options, but can I have it do this automatically everytime a VNC connection is initiated? I've tried editing the com.apple.ScreenSharing plist or whatever it was called and changing the observe quality to 2 and 3, but the changes do not reflect in my client (Jaadu)
    Any help would be appriciated!
    Thanks!

bump for vnc and iphone love =D

  • Pantone  336 colours in Photoshop...

    Hi,
I'm trying to turn a CMYK image into a duotone image. Specifically Black and Pantone 2291C.
Pantone 2291 is from the +336 books and for some reason I can't find it when I search the colour libraries in Photoshop.
I haven't had this problem in Illustrator or InDesign.
    Would appreciate some help!
    Cheers

It could be one of two things.
    1. It could be that Photoshop renders things on your screen using different protocols. To check this, use the Information window to read the numerical color values as you hover over an area. If the numbers are the same in both programs, then it's just the way the program is rendering your image and they're actually the same color (they just look different on your screen).
    2. You could be using a different color profile for each program. This will come up as different numbers for the same area.

  • Pantone colours in Illustrator have changed

I've opened an old packaging artwork in CC that was originally created in Illustrator CS5 and made design amends. All looks OK, everything behaving as it should.
I then copied and pasted the same artwork into a brand new CC document (as I needed to create a new artwork whilst using the same elements) and the Pantone colours all look much paler. Why is this?
Both document set ups are the same and both set up as CMYK not RGB.
If I paste back the elements from the new artwork to the old, the colours look OK again.
If I convert the Pantones to CMYK the values are different. I can't use CMYK colours as the job needs to be printed as Pantones.

    Peter,
The Pantone to CMYK values (CMYK representations issued/published by Pantone) have changed a few times over the years. What you see on your monitor reflects the CMYK values.
The Pantone inks themselves have not changed.
So you can keep printing as you did, and hopefully live with the changes in on screen appearance.
You may use the same libraries to have things look the same.
