Full D Drive, I think is slowing down my computer

Hello,
I have the HP Touchsmart 600-1390 and I purchased it in 2010 and the computer is really slow (internet and regular programs), and I don’t have many document or program saved.  I noticed that the d-drive is just about full, and my C drive is about empty.  Could this be why my computer is so slow? If show, How do I clean it up?

Kristal, welcome to the forum.
The D: Partion is the Recovery partition.  The only files on it should be for Recovery purposes.  It should not have any files added to it.  You should assure that no programs are saving to it by default. Check to see if there are files that you rcognize on it.  These should be removed or moved to another partition or drive.  Don't remove files that you don't recognize.  I don't believe that this would cause your computer to be slow, however.  The OS is on C:.
There are some things that you can do to attempt to speed it up, such as, defragment the drive; clear unnecessary files using Disc Cleanup in the Control Panel and update the video and other drivers.  If this doesn't work, it may be time to do a System Recovery using the Recovery partition.

Hi Everyone.  I have an old Mac Book with software updated to 10.6.8.  I have saved a ton of emails in my inbox 'On My Mac'.  There are so many it is slowing down my computer.  Where do I find the folder with all the emails so I can cut and paste them to an external hard drive? Pls.help.  Tks.

Depending on which email client software you use
the files should be in 'your home folder' library, esp.
if you use Mail application.... ~/Library/Mail
Since you don't specify what mail application,
that would most be associated with the file.
I notice there are some items to the right of your post
where it says "more like this' so that may be worth a
look to see if similar issues were answered. Also, the
Help viewer in your system is a searchable database.
Seems that google also brings up fair information, too.
Do you have a complete bootable clone of your entire
Mac system on an externally enclosed hard disk drive?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My coworker's external hard drive slowing down my computer

    Hello,
I have a question. My coworker plugged in his external hard drive to my iMac with a USB, and he has to run its files everyday through network from his computer. The reason he does this is because his old iMac cannot read his newly formate external hard drive. I feel like my computer is slowing down. Is what he's doing slowing down my computer? Is there a way to not let the external drive using my CPU or memory? Is there a way to set it to low priority?
    Thanks.

Since your current editing workflow is based around Virtual Copies there are no actual files containing the edit data. Therefore, you'll need to use the 'Import from another catalog' option ( see File menu).

  • If my SSD on my Air is almost full, will it slow down the computer?

If my SSD on my Air is almost full, will it slow down the computer? As in, if I have about 20GB left on my SSD, will the computer run slower?

Rule of thumb tends to be that you should set aside 10% of disk space for SSDs for the best speed. This comes from SSDs in Windows PCs, where the SSDs do perform more slowly when full rather than having some free space. This is just how SSDs work, which I won't get into the technicalities of. The SSD controllers themselves allocate set a reserve space (this could not be true in Apple's case, depending on what chips they use), but generally the more free space the better. So 64GB should set aside 6GB, 128GB should set aside 12GB, and 256GB should set aside 25-26GB.
SSDs technically will never be as fast as when you first got it. They slow down as soon as you start to write data to them, but the slowdown will be negligible. It's still faster than a HDD at the end of the day.

  • Ipod shuffle dose not show up in itunes and slow down my computer

hi i can see my ipod shuffle in my computer as removeable hard drive not my ipod name anymore and also i can't see my ipod in itunes at all and every time i connect my ipod shuffle it slow down my computer (very slow) and use my CPU 100% all the time my other usb hard drive(not ipod) works fine its only my ipod i also try to use all my usb port but its still the same thing.
and it can't be my windows because i have just reinstall windows 3 days ago
can someone help me fix this

I think I can add a bit to this problem.
My iPod stopped working during the first use after running the iPod Updater 2005-11-17. When a button is pressed both green & amber lights up.
When plugged into my computer, iTunes (vs 6.0.1.3) does not recognize it is there. Naturally, I tried to run the updater again (2005-11-17 version) and the program hangs. It does not use up the cpu though (~3%). Eventually, after ~5-10 min the updater recognizes there is an iPod and then the restore button can be pressed. However, soon after the updater gives the error "Firmware update failure. Disk write error"
I reinstalled iTunes and the iPod updater as well as tried to use the new updater (2006-01-10) and same error. I am in the process of checking the drivers now. But I still don't know what is causing this error...

  • Help!!  playlist is slowing down my computer

Hey all, need some help. My computer is 5yrs old I think my playlist is big enough now it is slowing down my computer big time. Any suggestions? I would appreciate it. Thanks

"hyjack".... a perfect word.... I can't operate any of my programs when it's writing these tags.
Mysteriously it stopped yesterday. There might be a correlation between me shutting my computer down - figuring it needed to reset. Yesterday Itunes was working perfectly.
So try the "old problem solver" ..shutting your computer down when you go to sleep.... a full rest....or shut it down for a full ten minutes. See if that works.

  • Is it worthwhile to load windows 7 onto my MacBook Air? Will it slow down my computer?

Is it worthwhile to load windows 7 onto my MacBook Air? Will it slow down my computer? What might be the benefits of having windows and mavericks as two different operating systems side by side?

Check out this article first. It deals with BootCamp vs Parallels Desktop but there are two other products: VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox that offer the same basic features as Parallels. So your first decision is which you prefer. As I said, I chose virtualization: Parallels Desktop in particular.
You need a full retail version of Windows - If you live in the States try New Egg for the best price. This is what I bought. You'll need it whether you choose BootCamp or virtualization. Note that Win7 apparently isn't available via download from Microsoft any longer, only Win8 so you'll need access to an external optical drive or use remote dvd sharing with your Windows computer. I've not tried installing Windows using remote DVD sharing but I have installed other software that way so I'd expect it to work if you choose virtualization. If you choose BootCamp you'll need access to an external optical drive or create an ISO image of Windows on a large flash disk.

  • Will having another OS on partition slow down my computer?

I have an early 2013 iMac (base 8gig RAMs, 1 TB harddrive, 2.7 GHz) that came with Mountain Lion. I want to partition my harddrive to install Mavericks. Will this slow down my computer's performace in any way? Also, if I keep going back and forth between Mountain Lion and Mavericks, will it harm the computer? Thanks in advance.

It may slow down your system slightly, depending on how full it is.  With a spinning hard drive, it's the fastest at the outside, which is where the Mountain Lion partition is.  So the Mavericks partition will be slower, but it may only be 10% to 15% slower for disk-related activities (assuming the disk isn't all that full).
But you also need to decide how you're going to handle your data: If you have a home directory on each partition it's going to be a pain.  However if you DON'T (and attempt to share it), then applications that update their database (i.e. Mail, Notes, etc.,) may have data loss or otherwise corrupt things.  So that's a risk.
Any reason you want to partition the drive?  For the vast majority of users, Mountain Lion to Mavericks is a smooth upgrade.  My recommendation would be to have a FULL backup (Time Machine, AND make a clone with SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to an external drive).  Then just upgrade.  On the off chance that things do go terribly, you can just clone your drive back.

  • My Mac book pro has the end of a earphone stuck to it. After this I updated to maverick, and this massively slowed down my computer. Now my laptop is switching on and logging in just fine, but after logging in the screen goes white. What can the reason be?

At first my laptop was fine after the earphone end got stuck in. Soon it started getting slower, and suddenly it stopped switching on. The people in the service station said that it wAs because the hard disk drive was corrupted. I came back home, and immediately it stopped working again. This time they said it was because of water spill. They changed the entire key board and then it started working for a while. Later I updated to maverick and that slowed down my computer. Once, I switched on my laptop, logged in, and then the screen went white. When we took it to the service center they said they will need to replace the hard disk. I am not sure what I should do. Any suggestions?

Liquid damage from water spill is progressive, unfortunately.
    Best.

  • Is my 23,000 song library slowing down my computer?

    Hi guys,
I have 23,000 songs on an external hard drive, and I wondered if iTunes writing the library file every once in a while, or any other cause, could be considerably slowing down my computer, why, and what I can do about it.
    Thanks!
    Alec

    Alec:
As I understand it, unless you were playing all your songs at once, your 23000 songs take up disk space, but don't slow down your computer. When you are running iTunes, importing music, or burning to CD iTunes will take up CPU capacity. You can watch the activity monitor and see how much of CPU capacity it takes up. If you don't find your computer underperforming in any way, you are fine. If you do, the cause is very likely elsewhere.
    Good luck.

  • IPhoto is severely slowing down my computer.

iPhoto is severely slowing down my computer.  I have 46,578 photos taking up 218.9 GB on an extra 1TB hard drive.   When I have iPhoto open, everything slows down.  I get the little spinning pinwheel constantly in every program.  When iPhoto is closed, things run perfectly.
What is the best way to resolve this issue?  Should I split my iPhot library into two separarte libraries?  If so, how do I do that?   Or should I use Aperature to manage my photos?  Any other solutions?

You might want to ask this question in the iPhoto discussion here.

  • Itunes is slowing down my computer by writing ID3 tags

What are ID3 tags? Itunes seems to be slowing down my computer and is becoming very slow to respond to commands because it says that it's "writing ID3 tags". This just started yesterday. I've been using Itunes for a couple of months.

  • Music will slow down my computer?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro. On my old laptop (a MacBook from 4 years ago), the music slowed down my computer so much, to the extent that I had to get an external hard drive so that it would run at all. With the new MacBook Pro, I am debating whether or not to put my 14 GB of music onto the computer itself or to keep it on the external hard drive. Do they have more memory/a better system to hold large amounts of music and still run fast? Thoughts?

No it won't slow your computer, unless you are getting very low on hard drive space. In you case with a new computer it shouldn't be an issue.

  • I just upgraded to Maverick on my2 year old Macbook Pro and it has slowed down the computer terribly.  All I see is that whirling circle every time I do anything.  How do I go back to old OS.  Terrible upgrade -- forces you to buy a new Mac!!!!

I just upgrade to Maverick on my 2 year old MacBook Pro and it has slowed down the computer terribly.  All I see every time I do anything is that crazy circle going round and round.  I don't recommend you upgrading.  How do I get rid of it.  I believe it forces you to buy a new macbook!!!!

It does not. First things first have you tried restarting?
    Try restting PRAM

Try booting up in Safe Mode

Also open "activity monitor" and look and see what is using a lot of processing power.

  • Hello there! Does anybody know RadioWMPCoreGecko 5.dll. What is it and how can I remove it because it slows down my computer. Thank you.

Starting my computer this morning I immediately was informed by Norton Security that RadioWMPCoreGecko 5.dll is safe. I don´t know this data and I want to remove ist because it slows down my computer. Has that something to do with Firefox? The Information of Firefox-Troubleshooting shows the following detail:
    Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0.1
    Can you help me?
    Thank you in anticipation.

To whom it may concern here the answer I received today from Norton Support:
''I would like to inform you that the RadioWMPCoreGecko 5.dll files was downloaded as an update for the Firefox browser which runs in the background and Norton program does not have any control on the downloads till it is safe.
If the download is safe, Norton program will notify you and will block, if file finds to be suspicious.''
Now I know what it is, but nevertheless my PC is still rather slow.
