FULL DISK wont launch finder
problem:
copying files on computer led to filling disk (till capped) and now will not launch finder. tried to delete files through single-user-mode but read-only error occurs
story:
DISK FULL dialog box pops up, while deleting (dragging and dropping into trash) large files into trash from logs folder in library the computer freezes slightly and drops files onto desktop (missing the trashcan). files copy until disk is absolutely full while computer is frozen. dead
Looking for:
best way to delete files without finder
nevermind! didnt realize you could delete files through target disk mode, all fixed

So, I admit it, I'm a Unix guy - it's one of the reasons OS X appealed to me in the first place. When I went to test my new external 320gb FireWire drive, I thought I'd make a full backup of my MacBookPro (10.4.11) using the tool I know best....tar. I mounted the drive and then did the backup from the command line:
cd /
sudo tar cvjf /Volumes/BigPartition/Save_All.tbz .
Hey, not pretty, but it worked. Except the backup tar file was 15GB - which was really odd since it's being compressed with Bzip and Finder says I'm using only 14GB _in total_ on my disk, and I'd expect a compressed backup to be much smaller - maybe 7GB. So it was 2x bigger than I thought it would be.
So I did it again, but this time without compression in case that was the problem (compressing already compressed data, etc). And it took up 31GB. So I'm REALLY confused here:
1) Am I using a whole lot more (17GB more!) disk than the Finder claims I am? OR
2) Is my 'tar' command saving files that don't really exist (like copies of virtual memory, etc.) that make it save 2x-3x as the actual data size would save as? OR
3) Is there some other explanation I'm not getting on this?
If #2, what's a tar command I could use to save the "real" system and data, but nothing else? Meaning, which directories/files do I need to exclude to save just the system and data I need to do a full restore, but no more?
Finally, besides the Backup app included with the OS, is there another tool/script I should be using to do a full system backup to my external drive?
thanks....and please scale the technical level of your answer to someone who programs in assembly language for fun. :}You definitely need a backup program with a GUI for MacOSX. That's because of the bad news: MacOSX is not Unix. Open Darwin! Right...Apple, to my knowledge, never modified tar, cpio, dump, pax, ..., everything but 'ditto' for its augmented file system, with aliases, meta-data, 16-bit unicode fonts, resource forks, &c. All but 'ditto' will backup only Unix data in Unix files.
'Ditto' will archive HFS+ files, and can even strip architectures not needed from 'fat binaries', and use the BOM (bill of materials) to copy applications. What it does with aliases is unknown to me, but I believe it follows both soft & hard links to their sources (as tar does, I think), overwriting these if you try and restore from it. So, 'ditto' was clearly touched-up by Apple solely for creating archives, not backups.
I should examine the standard archives, like VersionTracker, for freeware from 'sourceforge'. I've never found an adequate backup applications; but I stopped looking some time ago. I just drag from Finder windows to archive, burning DVDs with 'Disk Utility'. That should work.
Note something really cute, however: a genuine tape backup released some years ago. The little mini-cartridges that fit in a digital VCR hold 20 to 30 GB! This little application was a real 'tar', sells for about $40, writes files twice, has various levels of compression, can follow aliases & links or not, and can be found on VersionTracker. After experience with quarter-inch cartridges, which were a nightmare, I distrust any tape drive that sells for less than $3000. But I've never had a VCR not playback! It's worth a look; and, what the ****, it's romantic.

i used the "erase free space " option in disk utility and now my imac says the disk is full and wont let me download songs. please help!
You could try repairing permissions with disk utility, I don't think you will have the option to repair the drive but you could verify it.
This may help you delete the files that DU made but did not remove when erasing the free space.
http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-system-mac-software/317204-no-disk-space-after -failed-disk-utility-erase-free-space.html
When you get your SL disk it will not have the iLife applications, that would have been on the second install disk that should have been with the computer. I forget which version of iLife you will need for SL but I think it is this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-iLife-Single-User-Mac/dp/B003XKRZES/ref=sr_1_1?ie= UTF8&qid=1409607702&sr=8-1&keywords=apple+ilife+11
A search of the forums will confirm or deny this.
As to whether a clean install will cure your problem, i.e. partition the HDD and install I would expect it to be yes, but there are no guarantees it is an old machine. -
still running adobe cs2 on leopard. but now get unexpected quit msg. and wont launch. any chance that when i installed then uninstalled GENIEO yesterday something went wrong? how to fix? can i reinstall cs2 from original discs? bystephenftlaud
Hi,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when trying to open CS2. -

Disk wont recognize and wont eject
When playing DVD's, the player (VCL and Front Row) will pause at a damaged area on the disk. After pressing eject, the disk icon dissapears but the disk wont come out.
The disk dosnt show up in Itunes or anything else including disk utility.
Ive tried "drutil tray eject" and "disktool -e disk1" in applescript editor and nothing happens.
At this point the computer has to be force shut down. When it restarts ive tried holding the mouse button, and ive tired holding down the eject, as well as command and eject. This sometimes works but usually not. Sometimes the computer will just start normally and sometimes it will go to a grey screen and nothing will happen and I have to force shut down again.
Any ideas?Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

All App from AppStore wont launch in iPad3
I have an iPad 3 for one week. No jailbreak.
For about 2 days with no obvious reason. All App from AppStore wont launch (adobe Reader, Skype, etc..).
I've reinstalled / reset all with Apple support (32 hours) and after re-installing my App from App store the problem came again.
All app from apple are OK. (Photo, Mail, Safari etc ...)
I suspect a bug with iOs and all external application outside apple company.
too badFrom JacuesL : I will try this after posting his solution.
PROBLEM SOLVED
I installed iOS 5 on my iPad 1 when it came out in October 2011. Everything worked fine. Sometimes around the beginning of January, apps began to crash. First it was a few a week, but by the eginning of February, most of them would crash after running for a few minutes. Many would not restart untill I did a full reboot. My iPad became essentially useless.
After fighting this problem for almost two weeks, reading as many forums as possible, I did many things that DID NOT solve the problem. Here they are in the order I tried them.
Removed all working programs and rebooting the iPad - no effect
Removed over 50 apps (from 200) that I was not really using - no effect
Restored network setting via setttings - no effect
Restored all settings via settings. This re-installed everything via iCloud - no effect
Connected my iPad to my computer and did a restore and used a previous backup - no effect
Then, I remembered that other people were having problem with iCloud and that I had added services to iCloud around the beginning of the year. So I
Went into settings >> iCloud and disabled every iCloud service except the Find my iPad service. I rebooted my iPad and I have been crash free for three days.
So the problem IS iCloud.
Apple knows that there are other problems with iCloud and plans to fix it in the next release 5.0.2. In the meantime, try my solution and report to this forum if it works for you too. -
I've been having problems with certain programs on my ibook G4. It wont launch certain apps like Terminal, Limewire, and many other various programs that I'd like to use. I dont understand why though. It's like i'll double click on something and it'll pop up like it wants to open then does nothing. I've been all over the internet trying to find a solution and I cant. So anyone with advice plz help, this is killing me lol
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
Cheers!

Itunes wont launch, no error message, no blue screens, just wont open
itunes wont launch, i get no error message, no blue screen, it just wont open. I've tried to delete and reinstall, but once i close itunes i still have same issue. it wont open again.
I have same problem on my XP lap top and Windows 7 PC. Apple have been investigating this problem for me for a week now without success so far. Understand it 's ongoing with other customers as well.
It is caused by an bit of program called APSDaemon supplied by Apple in latest i-Tunes. Your quick fix to enable you to open i-Tunes again is as follows:- open Task Manager (right click bottom toolbar), click on Task Manager, select Processes. Find APSDaemon, highlight and press END PROCESS. I-tunes will now re-open ok. You have to repeat this every time you want i-Tunes re-opened until you switchoff or restart.
A pain I know, but lets you keep going until Apple repair and release an update for i-Tunes -
How Do I Get At My Disk Image In Finder?
Hello
I've used Disk Utility to create a disk image. I want to copy that .dmg file to a USB stick drive to back it up. How do I do that?
I've tried dragging the icon from Disk Utility but that didn't work. I know the file is actually stored in /Volumes/ but the Finder hides that directory.
Thanks!Hi IanB
Make the default directory for disk images to be the desktop.
you ask
s there any way to access the full Unix directory with Finder rather than resorting to Terminal like I did?
No, Finder is the GUI and is not intended to have the functionality of terminal. People get themselves into enough trouble as it is.
When you do need to something at a fundamental level, you can't get anything more powerful than Terminal.
I would use Disk Utility some more, to become familiar with making diskimages, and note their locations as I have described in my first post, and you should get a sense of control over what you are creating and where it is.
And thank you for the star, that is thoughtful.

Time Machine does not cope well with nearly-full disk
Although Time Machine is supposed to delete old backups when the disk fills up, under some circumstances it does not cope well with a disk-full condition.
Hardware: iMac (mid 2007)
OS: Mac OS X version 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
The other day I noticed that I had not had a successful Time Machine backup in over a day. Backups were taking a long time to run (4 hours or more), during which time the backup disk was chattering constantly and the disk showed "Estimating index time" in the Spotlight menu (even though I had excluded the disk from Spotlight indexing). When the disk finally stopped chattering, the backup finished with no visible errors but Time Machine continued to state that the last successful backup was yesterday. The backup disk was nearly full, but I had assumed that Time Machine was designed to cope with this situation by deleting old backups.
A complete annotated log file of the incident and my observations can be found here: http://bentopress.com/backup.log.zip
Here are some of the interesting entries from the system.log file:
Sep 7 16:22:14 Bento-iMac com.apple.backupd[56515]: Starting standard backup

Sep 7 16:26:14 Bento-iMac com.apple.backupd[56515]: Copied 776 files (17.3 MB) from volume iMac HD.
Sep 7 16:26:15 Bento-iMac com.apple.backupd[56515]: Backup canceled.
Note the "error: 0". Error code zero normally indicates success.
There were also many, many, many copies of the following message, which occurred while Spotlight was trying to index the backup disk:
Sep 7 17:28:40 Bento-iMac com.apple.backupd[58064]: Waiting for index to be ready (100)
Here's what I think is happening: at the very end of the backup, after the files have been copied to the backup disk, mds resets indexing because the disk is now full. backupd's attempt to flush the index to disk then fails because indexing is suspended (error zero), so the backup is canceled. I suspect that this may occur when the new backup and the old one(s) being deleted are both small enough that the disk "packs" tightly, leaving no room for the index. If a large (>500MB) old backup had been deleted to make room for a small (<100MB) new one, the problem would not have occurred.
I worked around the problem by switching Time Machine from the full disk to my Time Capsule. (I did not have this system backing up to the Time Capsule originally because I purchased the Time Capsule later for a different system.) The downside of this is that I lost access to older backups (though they are still accessible by right-clicking on Time Machine in the dock and selecting "Browse other Time Machine disks..."—however, I have not actually tried this). I'm also not completely happy having both my main systems backing up to the same hardware, but everything seems to be working well at this point and I do have a secondary backup system, using SuperDuper to clone the systems' disks to an external HD, which I do about once a month.
Although I have worked around the problem, I am posting this in the hope that it will be useful to someone else, in the hope that someone at Apple will notice and perhaps improve the performance of Time Machine in this situation, and also in the hope that someone can suggest a solution that does not involve throwing a bigger disk at the problem. Is there any way to free up space on Time Machine's backup disk, for example by manually pruning older backups, either through Time Machine itself or via the Finder or command line?If you suspect that the disk being full is the problem, have you tried deleting some of the old backup data on the TM disk?
When in TM, go back to the past a long way, right click on a file/directory and select "delete backup". Do this on some big files you have (so that you get more space per removal) that you change all the time (so you'll still have recent backups). -
HT4589 Final Cut Pro wont launch anymore
I updated to the latest version of Final Cut Pro and now it wont launch. the window comes up and all I get is a spinning colourful wheel as a cursor and no way to operate the software.
Could be a problem within one or more of your Events or Projects.
Move your Events and Projects to new (temporary) folders so that FCP X doesn't find them on launch.
If it launches OK, then quit the app and move the Projects back one by one (re-launching each time). The media will be offline (red clips) but if it launches OK, quit again, and move the Events back one by one - re-launching each time you move an Event.
This should isolate the offending Event - you can then use a similar technique to track down the individual file.

Itunes 10.5 wont launch but every other version will
As in the title, wanting to update to ios5 needs itunes 10.5 but once installed it wont launch. Its not in the processes, and so far every other trick in the book suggested on the internet (clean uninstall/reinstall, deleting the preferences file i forget the name of, cleaning out the temp folder) nor do i have a virus/malware and have tried with every type of anti-malware uninstalled so there could be no problem and finally ive tried the whole msconfig start-up lark to no joy. Quick time works fine as well.
But its not a case of itunes wont work full stop, any version before works perfectly fine without any glitches.
Any ideas at all?oh also, theres no error messages either
