Full EFI reset

Hello,
I have a late 2009 iMac (hardware model "iMac11,1").
I set up an EFI password with the Apple-provided utility about one year ago (or more, I was still under Snow Leopard). A few weeks later, I decided to change it, but the utility does not request the old password. So I entered a new one and thought it would be OK.
A few months later, I need to boot on an external hard drive to perform a clean install of Mac OS X Lion. I start by pressing "alt" but the external disk will not boot. So I chose it as a startup disk in the system preferences (do not do that at home). And I restart. The EFI prevents me to boot on the hard drive and requests the password to change the configuration back; so I was screwed. And of course, it does not accept the new password (I lost the previous one; yes, this is my fault).
After having browsed the web, I found the RAM technique:
shut down your computer;
remove the power cord;
remove one RAM module;
plug the power cord;
start the computer when pressing cmd + alt + P + R (all at the same time);
the Mac will make the boot sound, thrice;
release the keys and let the computer boot—the EFI should now be reset;
shut down, remove the cord, put the RAM back, plug the cord and voilà!
This did indeed work and removed the EFI password completely. I managed to select my standard disk back and managed to install Lion anyway.
But I still cannot boot on an external hard drive (be it over USB of FireWire 800) and I need it now. I think I need a full reset of the firmware but cannot find a proper way to do it.
I found pointers to rEFIt, but it is unmaintained since 2010 so this is no option.
Is there a mean to perform a full EFI restore ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Okay, I finally solved my problem: my computer would not boot over FireWire, but would over USB. I still do not understand why but I managed to do what I wanted.
As a side note, the problem happens with or without Filevault 2 activate.

  • Would formatting the C drive trigger a "full" factory reset?

    Hello!
    I have a T510i with windows 7. I ran a factory reset from the F11 menu, but it didn't really reset everything and now my windows udates doesnt work anymore. All of them fail, but i keep getting new ones.
    My question is, if I format the C drive, can i then run the factory reset from F11, and would the wipe force it to do a full reset?
    Also, what partitions should exist? I have the C drive and the recovery drive, should there be any more?
    Simon

    Hi Lead_org!
    I bought it aprox 14 months ago, so it might just have ended. I'm not sure for how long my warranty was and I can't access those documents now, as I'm right about to go on a 6 month trip to India. (DESPERATLY trying to fix my computer before I go).
    I don't know if the long story will be necessary but I'll give it here FYI:
    I split my main partition in two to run a dual boot with Ubuntu. From this point on I started getting INVALID_KERNEL_HANDLE BSOD's in Windows randomly. So, I deleted the Ubuntu partitions and extended the Windows partition back to it's original size (or so I think), but the same BSOD still appears.
    So I enter the F11 menu and do a factory reset. Unfortunately nothing was really reset, except that Google Chrome dissappeared.
    Next move was to make sure that the machine was fully updated. But then, after running updates for two days i noticed that all updates was flagged as Failed. And that's where I am stuck now. I guess the BSOD is because something is now wrong in the partition table, and the windows updates fail becuase of the "factory reset".
    The alternative I'm looking for now is a total factory reset, hoping maybe this can be done by first formating C:, but I don't want to try it without first consulting you guys.
    /Simon - really appreciating your replies.

  • Time since last full charge resets itself?

    I am using an iPhone 6, 64 GB running iOS 8.1 and I have noticed that the "Usage" and "Standby" information shown under "Time Since Last Full Charge" suddenly dissappears, regardless of how much charge is left on the device. Last time it dissappeared when there was 10% charge left. Why is this?

    This is definitely a real issue. I had thought I discovered the culprit when the usage statistics also reset on my iPhone 5 after a wifi sync. So I was going to experiment on my iPad and not sync for the life of the charge to see if a reset wouldn't happen. However, after charging the iPad fully for a FaceTime call with family that drained the battery to around 72%, I shut it off for a few days while using only my iPhone. When I started the iPad up today, the usage statistics were once again blank. My iPhone is now charging so I will proceed with the experiment on it instead, but I do believe that wifi sync won't be the cause. If an app is causing this, it's one of these that were listed as being used in the last 7 days (i.e. The only apps used when fullly charged and after shutdown to starting up today):
    Safari, FaceTime, Home & Lock screen, Newsify, and Settings (in that order)
    If anyone else is experiencing this phenomenon, please make note of it here. It could be helpful to narrowing down a cause and let Apple know of a bug in the OS.

  • Full Reconciliation resets user password on resource?

    I am new to IDM and thus have limited expertise, I would appreciate if you guys can help me out.
    I would like to import all the users from LDAP resource through Full Reconciliation. Everything works well except that Full Reconciliation actually resets all the user password (I wonder why IDM does this). Does anyone know how can I remove this feature?

    I have found out that it was not reconciliation that does the reset password, but Enable User workflow that I have defined in Per-account Workflow which resets the password.
    Sorry for the misundersrtanding.

  • SQL Query (report region) without full page reset

    Hello,
    I have a page with several items, some of them with default values, and a report region, performing SQL query based on one of the items – text field (always submits page when Enter pressed). When the page submits, the HTML DB engine performs and display the query, but at the same time, reset the other page items to their default values.
    Is it possible to run the query without the HTML DB reset the item values to their default state?
    Thanks,
    Arie.

    Hi Peter,
    Well, this is not exactly the case. I have an Item – File Browse – which defined as "Only when current value in session state is null", and a HTML text region, which contain Iframe, with default src tag (which I'm changing, using JavaScript, prior to the running of the SQL query). After running the query – in a report region – both the item and the Iframe reset to their original state.
    Any Ideas on how to prevent that?
    Thanks,
    Arie.

  • Full fresh reset and reconnection failing

    Hello
    I'm picking up an airport express from my wife's old house and would like to reset it and reconfigure it.
    My problem is that even after holding the reset button down for ten seconds, and connecting to the network via airport (not ethernet), airport utility can't read the configuration file....
    Is there anything I can do about that? Would connecting to the Aiport express directly via ethernet make any difference?
    Would that work?
    Am I resetting the wrong way?
    Thanks!
    Alex

    Once it has been factory reset, I would connect the ethernet cable to it before you configure it. Once you have reset the Express do not use the same system name that you have before and use a different password. You can put a "New" in front of the system name or after or a "1" after just call it something different than the old system. Check out pages 36 - 38 of the Airport Express User's Guide that talks about changing passwords and factory resetting.

  • Macbook Pro shuts down with a full battery, resets date

    Hey I have a mid 2011 Macbook Pro that has been shutting down randomly. It'll have a  full battery, but shut down when I unplug it or even sometimes when it's still plugged in. Every time I start it up again, the date is changed to Jan. 1 2008 and there's a notification that because it's set to that date, some applications may respond "erratically". It did this for about 2 weeks, then was back to working fine for about a month and now it's started up again.
    Today when I turned it back on after it shut down, a notification said to rebuild the iPhoto library. I didn't really know what it meant so I clicked OK because I thought it would help. Instead it erased my entire iPhoto library and shut down again. Thankfully I had my picture backed up!
    I have a Genius appointment tomorrow, but was curious if this is happening to anyone else or if anyone has a diagnosis!
    Thanks!

    Ok so I took it to the Apple store today and the guy was mildly helpful. He said I'm probably running too many programs at the same time and it's depleting all the power. Kind of ridiculous in my opinion because I feel like MacBooks are built to handle checking your email and editing a picture at the same time. He checked all the systems with disk utility and everything, including the battery, came back in good shape.  Anyway, it worked fine (of course) when I was with him, but the moment I got home it was worse than ever. Now, even when plugged in, it'll only stay on for a few minutes, if that. It won't turn on at all if it's not plugged in. It plays this game where it shuts itself down then turns itself back on then shuts down again over and over. Any ideas? I feel like I'll just have to take it back to the store.

  • EA4500: Full erase/reset/wipe all apps and Cloud references

    I am returning my EA4500 and would like to know how to wipe the router and remove all access from the Cloud. I setup the "Cloud"  while troubleshhooting an issue and I would now like to wipe this and everything related to the router from my systems.
    Note: Because of the "Cloud" I want to be sure that everything is removed and Cisco is completely out of my network. Ugh - what was I thinking when I installed this?!!!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    A reset will do to wipe the current settings you have on the router. And then you can disconnect it from the current network that you have physically. Regarding Cloud or what they call now Linksys Smart Wi-fi, it is internet based so the account will always be there. I am not sure if there is an option for you to cancel it. It would only mean that you just simply do not access the account anymore.

    I would honestly try this. It is how to restore your phone and see if it works.

  • Full Factory Reset?

    Ive recently come into possesion of an HP dv4 1275mx laptop, via hand-me-down. Its been loaded with tons of software and applications, and wont even operate unless in safemode.
    What i need to know is if its possible to completely reset it to the factory settings without a disc? There is no personal information that needs to be saved, it justs needs to be reset.

    Well, then you will need to order a set of recovery DVD's.
    You can read the info at the link below on how to order from HP.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07143&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lan...
    If HP doesn't have them you can order a set from this vendor.
    http://www.computersurgeons.com/productdetails.aspx?ID=12731
    Or...
    If you can read the entire 25 character Vista product key on the bottom of the PC, you can make your own Vista installation disk and do a clean, software free install of Vista.
    If you can read your 25 character MS product key, you can make your own Windows Vista installation disk. Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
    Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
    The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
    The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
    When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
    I selected No, make the ISO file.
    It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
    I tested both of them an my hp dc7100 CMT desktop PC, they worked perfectly.
    Apparently when you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.
    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3317.2-3-microsoft-windows-vi...
    After you successfully install vista, you can then visit your PC's support and driver page and install the drivers you need.
    If a lieutenant commander can do it, surely an admiral can too.
