Full Motion Video - memory leak?

Good afternoon.
I am using captivate 1.01.1418.1418 to record and present
standalone demos of rich client web technologies. The default
capturing techniques just don't cut it, so I need to record the
entire demo in full motion video.
What I have noticed is that when you edit the video AND ALSO
when running the published demo using either stand-alone or swf
object methods that there is a huge memory leak. I am talking to
the magnitude of 20-25 meg / second while displaying full motion
video.
My latest presentation is 22 slides where 3 of them are short
full motion video clips recorded at 1024x768 with no audio. The
clips are between 30-90 seconds.
The generated output exe is 6 megs and if I generate it with
all compression off it is 11 megs. When I run it, my memory usage
goes to 1.7 GIG of Physical Memory and over 2 GIG of Virtual Memory
in use. The movie playback then turns solid red and my machine
hangs up until I can manage to kill the playback.
Is there a known issue with full motion video and memory
leaks? I can understand if it took more memory to run it, but using
3+ gig of RAM to play a 10 meg file? Something sounds off to me.
I had purchased this product to record and display full
motion demos and so far it has not been able to meet the needs it
promised to deliver.
Any help anyone provides is greatly appeciated.
Please respond here and/or email me at
[email protected]
Thanks in advance for your time.
-Ray
P.S. I remember seeing the same behavior on my trial version
of Captivate 2, however, my trial has expired and I cannot see if
the leak is of the same magnitude.

Hi Ray,
You are experiencing "normal behavior" for the use you are
putting Captivate to. It was never designed as a full motion video
capture tool. I won't argue whether or not the marketing people
ever said it was capable of doing what you say you bought it to do,
but I really doubt they would make a claim that everyone knows is
not true ... if you can find something official from Adobe
asserting that, I'd sure be interested in seeing it.
The full motion feature was intended to be used to
demonstrate 2-3 second drag-and-drop operations, or use of a
scroll bar action of about that duration. In addition, you stated
you are capturing at 1024x768 size, which is an image of truly
gigantic proportions - adding to the full motion load you are
already throwing at the product. Could it be that another product
is better suited for what you want to do? I'd consider that
seriously because you are asking more of Captivate than I believe
it can deliver on anything but a machine designed for 2015
processor speeds with infinite resources.
It is especially sad that you own and used Captivate 1.0.1,
then spent an additional 30 days using the Trial version of
Captivate 2.0 ... but are just now finding it doesn't do what you
thought it should do. Again, sorry for your trouble.

  • Full-motion Video

    OK, I have cerated a number of chapters in an onlien tutorial
    and they are all working fine. But now I am creating one chapter
    that will need to utilize a long (20-30 secs.) of full-motion
    video. When I do the capture, and switch over to full-motion (F9),
    it appears everything is fine. I switch back (F10) and then end my
    recording.
    The first issue is that Captivate breaks up the full-motion
    section into several segments, resulting in a visible glitch
    between them when playing back. (I am also finding that the program
    crashes frequently when working with full-motion, so I am saving
    and restarting frequently.)
    But the real problem comes in playback over the web. There
    seems to be a problem in the file picking up the swf video at the
    right moment and I am sometimes seeing nothing but a black screen.
    If I play the file a few times, then it seems to load and play back
    OK, but is there anything I can do to ensure a consistent playback?
    Thanks!

  • Importing full motion video in slidelet

    Alright recorded some slides and I am trying to incorporate
    them in to a slidelet but they have full motion recordings in them.
    When I publish to SWF it makes two separate SWF files. The full
    motion portion is in the middle of my project. Is there any work
    around to playing the full project in the slidelet? Will I again be
    stupefied by the simplicity of it?

    Sorry, I didn't think about just making the whole thing full
    motion.....

  • Supporting full-motion swf files

    Hello,
    Is there a way to create only one swf file even though the
    project contains partial full motion recordings? Thank you in
    adavance for your time and response. Özlem

    Hi Özlem
    There may be. Here is how I've accomplished it. This
    technique was developed by fellow Adobe Certified Instructor John
    Daigle.
    Publish your project to a temporary location. Lets call it
    Folder A.
    When you publish, it's important that you ensure that your
    Publish dialog lists Flash Player 7 as the target version.
    After you have published, insert a blank before each slide
    containing full motion video (FMV). Configure the play time for the
    slide to match the FMV slide.
    Now insert the corresponding FMV clip you find in Folder A
    where you published earlier. After you insert, delete the original
    FMV slide. Rinse and repeat until all FMV slides have been removed
    and matching slides with FMV from the temporary folder have been
    inserted.
    Publish again (and again ensure you publish to Flash 7 as the
    target).
    As I said earlier, this process worked for John and it works
    for me. But I've outlined it here before and it failed for one or
    two folks. I'm not sure why. There are a few little animations that
    may need tweaking if you are using those.
    Hopefully you will be successful with it... Rick

  • Best Practice for full motion

    I'm new to this whole publishing video to the web thing and
    I'm quickly learning that full motion recording is a bit large to
    deliver via the web. So I guess I'm asking for advice on how to
    show/demonstrate a full motion action in the most efficient manner
    possible. When I import the created SWF from Captivate into Flash
    8, it becomes blocky (black pixel looking blocks) and does not
    export in a usable fashion. I think it's from changing the frame
    rate from 30 to 10.
    It is possible to record at a lower frame rate for full
    motion? If not, then is there a better compression scheme that I
    can be using to better deliver the video?
    Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • Full motion parts go blank once on Macs

    I created some tutorials for work using Captivate 3. The
    exported versions (html) work just fine on PCs. On macs however,
    every single part where you'd find full motion video (ex: using a
    scroll bar, highlighting text, etc.) goes
    blank. Obviously this is a major problem because we can't
    put a "PC only" version of our tutorials, especially since we have
    many Mac users as clients.
    When we tested on both the PCs and the Macs, you had the
    exported
    html file surrounded by multiple
    swf files, each of which is one of those full motion videos.
    For some bizarre reason, PC's find and play those clips just fine
    when their time comes, while on Macs these parts of the tutorials
    go blank, like they can't find the swf files even though they are
    at the exact same place.
    We tested on multiple OS and with all possible browsers. If
    anyone has any idea why this might occur, please help.

    On a PC, I have the same problem when I import the .swf file
    into Articulate Engage.

  • Crop/Zoom-In/Resize full motion shot

    I've got some real nasty vignetting in a 2-1/2 minute video clip, and I must use the clip.
    I would like to figure out how to increase the shot size (ZOOM IN) by about 15% and re-render it to take care of this problem.
    This is full motion video, NOT a still photograph --Ken Burns won't work here (sadly).
    Thanx!

  • Cropping Crashes Aperture 3 due to Video Card Memory Leak?

    Recently after updating from 3.1.1 to 3.1.2 I have been experiencing crashing issues whenever I perform the cropping action.  I see the death of wheel following hitting the return key.  There was one time when the master version itself vaporized into thin air.  I also noticed from the iStat Menus that the issue only occurs when the ATI Radeon HD 2400 memory usage has reach its full capcity.  I quite firefox to release some of the memory then Aperture functions normally until the memory runs out again.  I would then see the death of wheel once again when I crop.
    Is Aperture crashing because I need a more powerful video card or is it a memory leak issue with the application?
    Thanks!

    So have you run the basic library first aid steps? Another thing to try is to create a new empty library, put an image into it and try cropping it and see what happens.

    I migrated everything from the old computer to the new.  I also tried creating a new library and the issue persists.  I've also tried the First Aid options all of 'Repair Permission, Repair Database, and Rebuild Database' none of which worked.  I've also tried reinstalling Aperture and it crashes on the first crop.
    I will need to be editing many photos in a few weeks and now I'm stuck with this issue.. HELP!!!!!!!
    It seems like others have run into the same issue also but no solutions!!
    Why is aperture 3.1 crashing after cropping images, any one else?

  • Memory Leak with Flash Game - video of incident - Fix?

    My hypothesis:
    There is a memory leak in Flash Player that leads to Flash crashing, predictably and repeatedly, when used.
    My question:
    When will this problem be fixed?
    Evidence:
    Observe the progression in the following single-take video of me playing my favorite Flash game, posted to Youtube.  Skip to the times indicated in the "About" description for the video to observe the increase in use of physical memory, as observed in Windows Task Manager, until there isn't anything left.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNIJvTuUitU
    My computer gets bogged down, the game stalls out, and Flash needs to be closed to enable my computer to function once more.  It makes it impossible to play this specific game for very long, and is an insidious problem lurking in the background every time I watch a video, play a game, or use Flash Player for any purpose.  My computer always slows down, with the problem worsening as time passes until I need to close everything and start again.
    Details:
    Flash Player Version: 11.7.700.224
    Operating System: Windows Vista (32-bit)
    Browser: Mozilla Firefox
    (Also happens when using Google Chrome)
    Conclusion:
    If you need further information about my specific computer, please feel free to ask.
    If this problem is specific to my computer, I would appreciate knowing this and determining a way to solve the problem.  My suspicion is that the problem originates in Flash Player itself and is experienced by many people in a variety of circumstances.  It is my hope that an articulate response indicating how long it will take to correct this bug in Flash Player can be provided.
    Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Memory leak problems with loading videos over and over.

    I'm having memory leak problems with loading videos into a VideoPlayer aswell as FLVPlayback.
    What the flash should do:
    - Should be running for 7 days without having to restart the projector.
    - Interface that shows people around a 360 3D model with 5 different parts and at the stops it makes during the rotation you can click to zoom in on a location which plays a movie for that aswell.
    - Shows a video out of 5 parts for a 360 rotation in 3D in mp4 video (added each time and cleaned up, see code below).
    - Still images are used when the video clips are done playing (MovieClip in stage).
    - Should run automatically when there is no user interaction for X minutes.
    What the problem is:
    - The flash (as a exe and swf i guess) starts to consume memory over time (say 10 hours) until the projector crashes. This usually at around 1.75 GB of memory.
    I cannot see why the Flash cannot garbage collect this and free up the memory. Mabye there is something I don't understand about the garbage collection in flash?
    Here is some code from the video loading and playing:
    var fVideo:VideoPlayer;
    VideoCreate();
    function VideoReady(pEvent:VideoEvent):void
    trace("VideoReady()");
         // start playing video
    fVideo.play();
    function VideoLoad(pUrl:String):void
         trace("VideoLoad(" + pUrl +
         VideoCreate();
         if (pUrl != "")
              if (fVideoFolder + pUrl == fVideo.source)
                   fVideo.seek(0);
    VideoReady(null);
              } else {
    trace(fVideo.state);
                   if (fVideo.state !=
    VideoState.DISCONNECTED) fVideo.stop();
    fVideo.close();
    fVideo.load(fVideoFolder + pUrl);
         } else {
    // error no url
    function VideoCreate():void
         trace("VideoCreate()");
         // remove old one
         if (getChildAt(0) == fVideo)
              removeChildAt(0);
         fVideo = new
    VideoPlayer(1024, 768);
         addChildAt(fVideo, 0);
         fVideo.autoRewind = false;
    fVideo.addEventListener(VideoEvent.COMPLETE, VideoDonePlaying);
    fVideo.addEventListener(VideoEvent.READY, VideoReady);

    Hmm. It's in connection with Dropbox. Så apparantly you can only use one of the two at the same time if you want the programs integrated in Finder.

    Also, when I try to close firefox and restart it, the process doesn'y get killed with the normal Command + Q in Mac.
    I need to use Force Quit instead.

    Try updating Flash. You appear to be running an older version dating from September 2010 which might be the cause of the problem. Download from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
    If the problem persists after updating, try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

  • Full motion preview as video file icon?

    is there a way to give a video file a finder icon that shows a full-motion preview, much like the small clip that plays when you highlight a video file in frontrow? thanks!

    Hi gazer,
    I'm not certain about a Finder icon to assign to a video clip but here's an example of what you can do.
    Open a Finder window. Select "Column View" from the buttons just right of your Forward/Back buttons. Now, in the Sidebar on the left, click Movies, (or whatever file you keep videos in, it's handy to keep them in the Sidebar)... a list of video files will appear. Just select one. A video clip will appear in the column to the right and you can view it that way. If need be you can Customize your Toolbar in any Finder window. Just open a Finder window, then in the Menu top of your Desktop, click View/Customize Toolbar.
    Hope this helps...

  • Memory Leaks   Unresponsive Mouse

    2009 8 core Mac Pro w/ 24 GB of RAM, ATI Radeon 4870, and a SeriTek PCIe eSATA card (card only has drives connected when running a manual drive clone).  When running Toast 10 or Parallels 9, my RAM will fill up (I use a program called Menu Meters to monitor stuff).  This machine worked just fine under OS 10.9 and earlier - no issues like this at all.  ClamXAV will also completely fill the RAM up (the meter will be full green, instead of part green, then mostly grey when Toast or Parallels fills it up).  I have to use Terminal to purge it so that the machine is usable.
    The other thing that happens is that sometimes when the computer wakes up or I am in the middle of doing something, the mouse will still move, but the dock will not pop open and the left button the mouse doesn't respond.  The right button will open the right click menu, but will not respond normally at all.  I have tried a different Magic Mouse, but the problem is the same.
    I thought that it may be a problem with the factory RAM and the Kingston RAM not playing nicely together.  So I ran it with just the factory 8 GB and then ran it with the Kingston 16 GB - the problem persists no matter which RAM is installed.  All of the RAM also passes the memory tests in Rember and TechTool.
    So, I need to find out if someone thinks that maybe the bluetooth module may be going bad causing the mouse issues.  I also need to find out what is causing the memory leaks.  I followed the steps that someone gave on this site to boot into safe mode, repair permissions, reset PRAM, then reset SMC (or the other way around - I did it like they said to).  It did nothing to fix the problem.
    I need some guidance here.  As I stated early on, the machine worked perfectly with OS 10.9.  I have WAY too much software that I use, so doing a completely fresh install is out of the question - I don't have time to reload everything.  This problem is annoying and I know that I am not the only one having these issues.  Any input will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

    Here is the EtreCheck report:
    Problem description:
    Memory leaks when using Toast 10 or Parallels 9.  Mouse also become unresponsive (it will move, but left button does not work and dock will not pop open - mouse problem happens independent of the RAM being filled up - different mouse was tried with same result).

  • Problem Report: Severe memory leak in Flash Player 9.0

    Summary
    Flash player 9.0 is prone to a severe memory leak when
    playing SWF files produced by Captivate 1 containing full-motion
    recordings.
    Versions affected
    The problem reproduces with Flash player 9.0 (Flash9.ocx,
    Version 9.0.16.0) hosted in either Internet Explorer 6.0 or Mozilla
    Firefox 1.5 on a Windows XP SP2 system.
    The problem does not reproduce with Flash player 8.0
    (Flash8.ocx, Version 8.0.22.0) in the same environment.
    Description
    After a few minutes playing a SWF file produced by Captivate
    1 containing a full-motion recording recorded with Captivate 1, the
    host browser ends up using more than a gigabyte of memory, and the
    playback of the movie slows down to a halt, together with
    responsiveness of the whole system.
    Impact
    Our organization develops E-learning content with Captivate 1
    for various customers, mostly Fortune 100 companies.
    This bug severely limits our ability to deliver content to
    our customers.
    Steps to reproduce
    1. Using Captivate 1.01.1418, create a “blank
    movie” with default settings.
    2. Use the “Record” button and begin recording a
    full-motion movie for about 2-4 minutes. For the purposes of this
    bug, it is enough to record a user typing random text in a Notepad
    window resized to fit in the default 800x600 window.
    3. After recording the full-motion movie, publish the
    Captivate movie as a “Flash (SWF)” movie, using default
    settings (making sure that the “export HTML” checkbox
    is selected).
    4. Open the published movie’s HTML file with a host
    browser, making sure that the browser is using the Flash 9.0
    player.
    5. While the movie is playing, watch the memory usage of the
    browser process using Windows Task Manager, and you will see that
    the values of the “Mem Usage” and “VM Size”
    counters keep increasing until the system becomes unusable.
