Full OS backup and restoration

I have a Win 2012 R2 server installed on a Dell PE730 box. The box is highly critical and there are lot of configurations in that server that I want to create a full backup and incase of failure of the box, the backup should be useful to restore the box
with all configurations.
I don't use any third party tools for backup - use Windows backup role in Win 2012, also plans to use the Windows feature itself to restore also.
What is the best method of creating a backup and restore plan. Pls suggest

Hi,
You can use a full server backup to perform all types of recoveries, including system state and bare metal recoveries. We recommend this option. Then you could recover your server operating system or full server by using Windows Recovery Environment.
For more detailed information, you could refer to the articles below:

    I have a doubt on the syntax for a full database backup and restore. For a single schema, the syntax for backup & restore is :-
    exp JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501/JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501 owner=JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501 STATISTICS=none
    log=JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501_exp.log grants=y constraints=Y rows=y compress=N

    imp <userid/password> file=<export dump file location> fromuser=<export user name> touser=<import user name>
    grants=y constraints=Y rows=y log=<import log file location>
    I hope, my question is clear.
    Please, help in solving the doubt.

    hi,
    thanks, for your answer. I took a export of one schema of the database. But, when I tried to import the schema to the destination database, it showed
    imported with errors with the existence of functions showing. The commands used by me for export and import are as follows:-
    exp JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501/JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501 owner=JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501 STATISTICS=none log=JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501_exp.log grants=y constraints=Y rows=y compress=N file=JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501

    Do, we need to drop the existing schema before importing or somethinig else. Please, help.

  • Windows 8 full system backup and restore to new laptop (system with 32GB mSata Cache)?

    Hi, I have a new Envy DV7-7205 which has 2TB storage with 32GB HDD Cache (or mSata, not really sure how it's implemented). I need to return the laptop as it's faulty but I would like to startup on the replacement exactly where I left off.
    Are there any special methods required to backup and restore the system image from the old laptop to the new one, particularly with consideration to the 32GB SSD cache, as this doesn;t seem to appear as a distinct "drive" on the system.
    Please can anybody advise the simplest, safest method to move my entire system from old to the new laptops (should be exactly the same spec machine).
    Many thanks,
    Greg

    Hi,
    Firstly I don't know how this is going to work on new machine because the Windows 8 lisence would NOT work at all.

  • How do I get my iOS8 Health data back after a full iTunes backup and restore?

    I was having battery issues with iOS 8.0.2 and was asked by Apple to back my phone up, restore it and then use it as a new phone in order to test the battery performance. I did this but upon restoring my phone from its backup today none of my Health data has returned. Is this now completely lost? Does Apple not back this data up along with everything else? Is there a way of getting it back as I've lost weeks of manuall-inputted data? Help!

    According to Apple
    Use Health on your iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 8
    health data isn't backed up unless you encrypt your backup. Very stupid if you ask me for Apple to decide that this data is somehow more sacrosanct than any other data I have on my iPhone. If I backup my phone, I expect it ALL to be backed up. If I was worried about the security of my health data, I would choose encryption, but that should be MY decision. For Apple to decide its better for me to lose all my important health data just because I don't want to encrypt it is insane.

  • Iphone4 would not restore Error -50. I have tried to restore and it restored it to the point that it created after 5.0 was installed. How can I get it an older restore point from my backups and restore it on another computer? The phone has been wiped out.

    Iphone would not restore---- Error -50. I have tried to restore, and it restored it to the new point that it created after 5.0 was installed. How can I get it an older restore point from my backups and restore it on another computer? The phone has been wiped out. I can see earlier backups in my C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup folder. There are four subfolders in this address. I need my contacts, photos, and messages back. I know this is a common error but I can not figure it out. I have ran the other troublshoot items in the error steps for 13 and 14 like apple says. Is there a way to call apple and get a step by step of how to restore from another restore point? Does anybody have a solution????

    It tells you to go to Error 13 and 14 if you receive error (-50).
    Here is what I have tried...
    Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
    Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting. I have moved it around to different ports.
    Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer. Didn't change anything.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
    Eliminate third-party security software conflicts. Removed all virus protection and firewall.
    There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.Used the Microsoft fix it.
    Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online. Doesn't matter.
    Try to restore from another known-good computer and network. I do not know how to do this or how to find the correct/full/complete restore point. There should be more information for this.

  • How to backup and restore working Mac OS 9 computer ?

    I have a working G4 running OS 9.0, and I would like to backup and restore that hard disk to a second G4 computer that is OS 9 bootable.
    I have a CD backup taken by Toast v4, of the entire disk, but I do not know how to restore the contents to the second computer. My previous attempt hosed the hard disk inside the second computer.
    I'm thinking I can boot up the second computer via cd-rom or external hard disk, but I'm not sure I can copy the contents from the cd-rom correctly. In particular, I'm guessing the boot sector is challenging to restore.
    I probably have some old OS 9 cd-roms around here, if I need to go that route.
    I've thought about removing the working hard disk, and using dd on a linux machine to make a clone of the drive. I'd prefer not to go that route, as I don't want to touch working hardware.
    I've also thought about hooking up a portable USB disk drive to my working OS 9 machine, and doing some sort of cloning. I'm not sure what program I would need to do that, and whether it's part of the OS 9 suite of tools, or a 3rd party tool. I used to own some various disk tools, but it's been so long I'm not sure I can find the cd's.
    So if anybody can point to some instructions on the net for me to follow, or have any suggestions, I'm all ears.
    Thanks
    mark

    If the second computer originally shipped supporting a newer OS 9.x
    system than the first 9.0, the other computer's OS9 version probably
    won't work since it would be too old. In the case of drag and drop,
    you can get away with a lot more than what an installer package may
    allow, since the installer's software can be avoided with Pacifist. So
    another computer's OS9.2.2 basic system could be used as a boot
    volume even if it is sparse and not the fully complemented OS 9.2.2
    that a full retail build would install from a rich full retail install disc.
    Usually the retail path was an OS 9.2.1 retail and the update to 9.2.2;
    but machines requiring OS 9.2.2 won't like a 9.2.1. Sometimes, since
    a drag and drop is not driven by installer software, you can use older.
    But machine specific bits, some critical for graphic card drivers & etc,
    would be likely missing unless the software used offered that support.
    If you can find one of these, it may work = note, out of stock:
    691-3638-A Apple G3/G4 9.2.2 (CD) System Software
    {This is a Mac OS 9.2.2 full installation CD, color Grey.}
    These do not come in retail packaging.

    Have fun, even if it isn't exactly as planned.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Has anyone sucessfully used the new Winclone 3.2 to backup and restore  Bootcamp partittion with Windows 7 Ultimate on MBP with Lion 10.7.3?

    Bought late 2011 MBP 17" with Bootcamp partition (Windows 7 Ultimate) and Lion OS 10.7.3
    I am trying to make a backup of Bootcamp partition before I start using my laptop but it proves to be a difficult task.
    I don’t have any installation disk for Windows 7 and I am afraid that, if a disaster strikes and I loose the HDD, my copy of Windows will be gone.
    The only way to restore Windows partition according to what I read so far is to do the following:
    • Use Windows to backup data from BootCamp Partition
    • Reinstall OS Lion formatting full hard drive in the process
    • Use BootCamp Assistant to create BootCamp partition
    • Install Windows 7 on bootcamp partion
    • Use Windows 7 to restore data from backup file created in the first step
    The only problem is that I don't any image or disk to re-install Windows 7. With Windows 7 I can create only 'repair disk' (for what it is worth) or system image but according to other users it would format the whole drive including OS Lion partition when reinstalling
    Winclone 3.2 seems like the answer to my prayers but would like to hear from the users if it worked for them (most imprtantly, did the restore work?).

    Got the response from Winclone regarding my confusion in step 18 of the procedure to create bootcamp backup.  The message displayed on the screenshot under step 18 can be ignored.  It refers to creating a Windows partition using Boot Camp Assistant but in fact this partition has already been created in earlier steps using Disk Utility.
    I bought Winclone 3.3 as it promises to make backup and restore of Bootcamp partition with Windows 7 on it really easy, the steps to do this task are easy and well documented, and the owner of the program was very prompt responding to my queries.
    I performed the following as an insurance against disaster prior to creating Winclone image:
    Since my Windows 7 came pre-installed but without any installation disk I used Windows 7 to create 'Windows 7 system image' . From what I read on forums the system image created using Windows 7 apparently can't be used to easily restore Boot Camp partition (as it wipes out OS X in the process).  I created this image as a last resort backup rescue - some users reported that it can be used to recover Windows but the process is painful and involve a number of steps, swapping hard drives, and paid software to assist in the process.  I did not bother to make notes on this process - thanks to Winclone I am not suppose to need this backup if everything works as promised
    I also created 'Windows 7 repair disk' prior to running Winclone.  Not sure what the value of it will be but again, this is something I did just in case I need it in the future
    Then I installed Winclone 3.3 and created Windows 7 Ultimate Boot Camp image without any problems (on MBP running Lion 10.7.4).  My Winclone image file of 150GB Windows 7 Boot Camp partition prior to installing any programs and without any data on it ended up being nearly 8GB (saved to the external USB HDD).
    I have not restored and don't plan to restore the Winclone 3.3 image just to test if it works (don't want to risk loosing my perfectly well running Windows 7 in case of any disaster).  So ultimately only time or experience of other users will tell me if I spent my money well buying Winclone 3.3.  I  know it worked for you JBLTZ so hopefully it will work for me when I need it one day.
    Cheers

  • Exchange Server 2013 backup and restoration question

    Good afternoon
    I am wondering if I can pick people's brains here if that's not too much trouble.
    I have recently implemented an Exchange 2013 environment with 3 servers (two multi-role CAS & MBX physical machines, and one further virtual CAS server). Everything is working correctly and mail-flow is fine. My question relates to backup and restoration
    procedures. I am running a single Database Availability group with the two multi-role servers members of the this group and I have one Mailbox Database on the DAG, passive on one member and active on the other. Failover has been tested and this is functioning
    as expected.
    The backup environment I have implemented is as follows. I have utilized a separate Microsoft DPM 2012 server that runs a nightly Bare Metal backup on both multi-role servers with a retention range of 14 days and I have protected the DAG using DPM with a
    nightly full-express backup and 4 hourly syncs on one of the multi-role servers. Furthermore the Mailbox Database is protected, again nightly with a copy-backup.
    I am confident I know what to do should the mailbox database become corrupted or lost or need to be restored for one reason or another (it would just be a case of restoring the backed up mailbox database using DPM to a pre-created recovery database), what
    I am not quite so sure on is what I would do should I lose one or both of the multi-role CAS and MBX servers (the third CAS I am not so worried about as it is not used for incoming mail flow from the internet and we really only use it for ECP as we did not
    want to expose this to the internet). I wonder what process should follow to restore my Exchange servers (I know how to perform the Bare Metal recoveries using WSB) and what configuration would be required after restoring the Bare Metal backups.
    I know this is a reasonably long question but if anyone has any advice for me I would appreciate it greatly in the unlikely event something goes horribly wrong with my Exchange environment.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    Yes, Most of the configuration settings are stored in AD. Mail data and personal related data are store in Mailbox DB. We just need to take consideration of these two points.

  • RMAN backup and restore for Disaster Recovery

    Hi Guys,
    I am very new to Oracle and have a question about RMAN backup and restore feature. I am simulating a disaster recovery scenario by having two VMs running oracle 11g, say hosta and hostb, hosta is sort of production db and the other a disaster recovery db (one that will be made primary when disaster occurs). My goal is to backup production db using RMAN and restore it on the other machine. For some reason when I restore the db on hostb, the command restores the previous backup but not the most recent one e.g. I took a backup yesterday (09/20) and applied it to the hostb that worked fine, but when I try to apply a fresh backup from today (09/21) it always picks up the old backup. Here's a dump of the screen:

    Thanks guys, I really appreciate all your help here. I redid everything all over again to get all the information you guys wanted. Since I noticed that more eyes are looking into this I am going to reiterate my steps one more time followed by specific answers to questions. My first backup on Host B is located under ..../restore_db/backupset whereas the subsequent one is under .../restore_db/backupset/backupset2.
    I take backup on Host A using:
    rman target /
    backup as compressed backupset database plus archivelog;
    backup spfile;
    quit;
    I restore the backup on Host B using:
    set dbid=13732232063;
    startup force nomount;
    restore spfile to '/oracle/app/dev/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/dbs/spfileforums.ora' from '/export/home/dev/restore_db/backupset/o1_mf_nnsnf_TAG20110928T171830_787gbpxh_.bkp'

    restore controlfile from '/export/home/dev/restore_db/backupset/o1_mf_ncsnf_TAG20110928T171638_787gbkxn_.bkp'
    quit;
    /* restart rman here */
    alter database mount;
    catalog start with '/export/home/dev/restore_db/backupset' noprompt;
    restore database;
    recover database;
    alter database open resetlogs;
    quit;
    I take another backup on Host A using (notice no spfile backup this time):
    backup as compressed backupset database plus archivelog;
    quit;
    I restore the database on Host B using:
    alter database mount;
    catalog start with '/export/home/dev/restore_db/backupset/backupset2' noprompt;
    recover database;
    alter database open;

  • Backup and Restore - WSUS

    Friends,
    I will format a Windows Server 2008
    server running WSUS 3.0, then
    I will install Windows Server 2008
    again and will install WSUS 3.0 again,
    do not want to lose WSUS settings and
    folders updates.
    If I follow the procedure to do the full
    backup and restore WSUS folder
    in the new folder after reinstalling
    WSUS, WSUS this function normally
    as before?
    I'll follow this tutorial.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/pt-br/library/cc720441%
    28v = WS.10% 29.aspx
    I await response and thank you!

    I will format a Windows Server 2008 server running WSUS 3.0, then I will install Windows Server 2008 again and will install WSUS 3.0 again , do not want to lose WSUS settings and folders updates.
    Can you please elaborate more on what this means and/or why you're doing this?
    Fundamentally reinstalling WSUS does not require a backup or restore operation -- unless you're planning on trashing the entire operating system installation -- which brings us back to the *WHY* question.
    It sounds to me like you're exploring Disaster Recovery scenarios, and if so, I'd suggest that your proposed scenario is not optimal, and involves an excessive amount of unnecessary work.
    More importantly, since you're choosing to do this on Windows Server 2008 (also perhaps worthy of a "Why?" question), you need to be acutely aware of the implications of doing a backup on such a server. In WS2008, backups are VOLUME-based only. Which means,
    unless you plan to heavily customize the installation environment to separate the WSUS database and content store from the operating system volume, your backup is going to be a Full System Backup -- in which case, reinstalling WSUS would be pointless, as a
    Full System Restore would get you the very same WSUS installation back.
    Furthermore, customizing the environment by putting the WSUS database and content store on a separate volume means you don't even have to do a backup/restore at all. Format the C: drive, reinstall Windows Server 2008, reinstall the WSUS Role and point it
    at the database and content store that still exists on the other volume.

  • Backup and Restore of Redis Data

    My usage of Azure Redis is a cache to store snapshots of data for an event sourced system. We have millions of events stored in persistent storage that are aggregated and saved to redis. This provides us with fast access to the current state of an entity.
    However, to rebuild the Redis cache from scratch would take many hours as the number of events in the system is huge and constantly growing.
    How in Azure Redis can we backup and restore data in case of failure? For instance, it would be nice to have access to an rdb file and archive it then restore when needed. We tried setting a non-Azure Redis as a slave of our Azure Redis however this does
    not work as it seems the Azure Redis doesn't have write access to it's working directory preventing it from writing an rdb file for sync.
    What are the recommended approaches to using Azure Redis as persistent storage? How can we backup/restore or even move data from one redis to another.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the response Mike. The interesting thing is on Saturday this didnt work. Today it looks like it is sync'ing succesfully. Below is the steps and output i saw on Saturday. I started it again today and it looks good so far. I will let it finish the
    sync and see what happens now. The redis is about 19gb on a Standard Pricing Tier.
    On the non-Azure Redis
    1. SET CONFIG masterauth <mykey>
    2. SLAVEOF myredis.redis.cache.windows.net 6379
    Then on my non-Azure Redis I see the following output. This ouput repeats until i kill the non-azure redis or set SLAVEOF NO ONE.

    Song

    Sankalp,
    I too have the error 0x81000033 when running the full system image backup.  I could not assign a drive letter to my 100mb drive with the Disk Management.  So, I went into the diskpart and ran the following commands:
    diskpart
    list disk
    DISKPART> list par
      Partition ###  Type              Size     Offset
      Partition 1    System             100 MB  1024 KB           ( 78.2 of 96.0MB free )
      Partition 2    Reserved           128 MB   101 MB
      Partition 3    Primary             73 GB   229 MB
      Partition 4    Recovery           423 MB    74 GB
    sel dis 0
    list par
    select partition 1
    assign letter=q
    fsutil usn queryjournal q:
    fsutil usn deletejournal /D q:
    After diskpart, I opened the "My Computer" and see that I have 78.2 of 96.0MB free.  Despite that, I ran these commands on the new q: drive:
    C:\Windows\System32>q:
    Q:\>fsutil usn queryjournal q:
    Error:  The parameter is incorrect.
    The FSUTIL utility requires a local NTFS volume.
    Q:\>fsutil usn deletejournal /D q:
    Error:  The parameter is incorrect.
    The FSUTIL utility requires a local NTFS volume.
    Q:\>
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Backup and restore open directory 10.7

    Hello,
    Since  i upgrade my xserve from 10.6.8  to 10.7 Lion, i get error on accessing the WGM with the diradmin account. I always get the messdage 'the password is incorrect'
    I've done lot of actions. So i Decide to backup and restore my OD. I need help for this as i am new comming on mac os environnement.
    The problem, i've full backup of the system prior the migration, not the specific OD backup

    Hi activenew,
    To recover from one of these problems, you can restore the Microsoft Windows operating system from a system state backup. You can restore a system state backup to the same
    physical computer from which the system state backup was created, or to a different physical computer that has the same make, model, and configuration (identical hardware).
    However, we do not support restoring a system state backup from one computer to a second computer of a different make, model, or hardware configuration. We only provide commercially
    reasonable efforts to support this process. Even if the source and destination computers seem to be identical makes and models, the source computers may have different drivers, hardware, or firmware than the destination computers.

  • Backup and restore Mac

    Hard drive is failing and so I will need to backup and restore Mac onto new drive. My Mac is a Macbook 2009 and I use Time Machine weekly for backups. So when my new drive comes what will I do? What I imagine I will do is the following.
    1. Take out old drive and install new one.
    2. Boot from OSX SL Boot CD and format hard drive.
    3. Restore Mac from time machine backup from Boot CD? Or would I need to install SL first?
    4. Mavericks, Mountain Lion and such were installed from the Apple Store and have no CD so this may complicate things.
    5. Regarding Windows XP Partiton I have no idea but I may need to install XP and Office again and if so I have the CD's. Or is there an easier way?
    Thank you for your help.
    John

    If you can put the new drive in an external USB or FireWire case, and use SuperDuper! (Free for a full clone) or Carbon Copy Cloner) it would make your life much easer when you swap the drive.
    As for Windows partition, you would need a Windows cloning utility.
