Full report on Aperture at PMA (include 1.1 features) up

I've just put up my PMA overview - as PMA continues I'll continue to go back and flesh out detail for things I may have missed (and expand the booth coverage with pictures). I think I've pretty well covered the 1.1 features though.

To keep in tune with updates, make use of the rss subscription from this page:

As I add new information to any section of the overview I'll announce it via that news channel.

Thanks for the info kgelner. But I am not sure I
agree with one of your conclusions. For instance,
Apple saying that third parties may provide custom
book sizes has nothing to do with opening up the API
for plugins. Custom book sizes could be delivered
without access to the API.
<...>
The thinking here is that if they expect custom third party books, that implies eventually publishing a standard for design of the books - as it stands now you can't be sure a custom book would work in the next version of Aperture (even just point releases like 1.1). I agree it's a bit of a stretch but published support in one area implies thinking of third party extensions which leads naturally to other areas.
You should note that the info on certification has
been on Apple's website for weeks.
Hmm, I had missed those before!
Come to think of it I still do not see the second level certification class for Aperture, I'll have to take a look.
Also of note, Josh Anon's Aperture2iLife program
already makes it possible to use images from Aperture
projects in all other iLife applications (except
iPhoto). While it would be good to eventually have
this capability within Aperture, I don't see this as
nearly important as say improved RAW decodes.
Will full resolution? I think it may only be using the large JPG thumbnails. Not that it makes much difference for most iLife uses.
All in all, it's my opinion that the work Apple has
done on Aperture addresses most of the legitimate
concerns voiced by users. Several photographers at
the show have called me after seeing demos to report
vast improvement in performance and RAW decodes.
That's great to get some other afirmations on the progress, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. The Apple booth is definatley pretty busy and the reaction has been very positivve - I think Apple is going to come away from the show with a positive reaction from a lot of people.
I am excited about the progress Apple has made in
only 13 short weeks. While they will never be able to
please all of their critics, Apple has at least shown
they are listening.
That impressed me as well! It seemed like in a short timespan they had added some impressive things, really key things too like the color meter, DPI support, and a very good plan for RAW decoder upgrades (which I'm sure had been in the works for a while before Aperture even shipped).

    Hello,
I encountered an error in the Payment Wizard screen as I was creating an Outgoing Payment for petty cash expenses. On the “Recommendation Report” screen, I clicked “Non-Included Trans.” and saw that one of the vendors (Vendor Code: WILCO) has the following error:
“The document amount is greater than the max. amount allowed in the payment methods linked to the BP”
Upon checking, the “PCF-W” Payment Method linked to WILCO does not have any restrictions, nor does WILCO have any credit/commitment limit set. I have also appropriately defined the Dummy Business Partner Bank (under Payment Terms) as well as checked the “Included” box for PCF-W on the Payment Run-Payment Methods screen.
Could anyone please help me on this?

PS - have found other posts indicating that clips smaller than 2s or sometimes 5s, or "short files" can cause this. Modern style editing often uses short takes ! Good grief I cannot believe Apple. Well I deleted a half a dozen short sections and can export, but now of course the video is a ruined piiece of junk and I need to re-do the whole thing, the sound etc. which is basically taking as much time as the original. And each time I re-do it I risk again this lovely error -50 and again trying to figure out what thing bugs it via trial and error instead of a REASONABLE ERROR MESSAGE POINTING TO THE CLIP IT CAN'T PROCESS. What a mess. I HATE this iMovie application - full of BUGS BUGS BUGS which Apple will not fix obviously, since I had this product for a few years and see just hundreds of hits on Google about this error with disappointed users. Such junk I cannot believe I paid money for it and Apple does not support it with fixes !!!
If anyone knows of a GOOD reasonably priced video editing program NOT from APPLE I am still looking for suggestions. I want to do more video in future, but obviously NOT with iMovie !!!

  • "Full Screen" in Aperture 3.2.1 is on wrong screen.

"Full Screen" in Aperture 3.2.1 - I finally bought Aperture and tried editing using my macbook pro and cinema display.  I am working with Aperture on the cinema display and selected "Full Screen," however, the "Full Screen" shows up on the laptop, not the cinema display.  The usual Aperture window stays on the cinema display.  Of course why bother editing if the full screen image is not on the larger display?  I tried dragging the "full screen" image from the laptop to the cinema display, but that wouldn't work.  I searched as best I could for any help on this matter to no avail.  Has any one else had this problem?  Thanks for any help with this.  (I usually work with PS CS5, other editing plug-in's with that, and iphoto for managing libraries.)

The most trouble-free (from the computer's perspective) is to put the OS Menu Bar on the big screen (this makes it the Primary Display), go Full Screen and set the secondary monitor to none.
All other variations of Full Screen + Dual Monitors are prone to the kinds of behavior you have experienced (IME).  I gave up using Full Screen Mode with dual monitors many months ago.  I hide the Toolbar, and regularly hide/show the Inspector.  I keep my browser to the side in Split View.
I had expected Apple to fix these problems with the release of Lion (guessing that Aperture's Full Screen Mode was actually a bit of a preview of what Lion would deliver).  Early reports were that this is not the case.
If you have a moment, you might send a report to Apple via "Aperture→Send Aperture Feedback".  The performance of Full Screen Mode on a dual monitor set-up is more lemon than Apple.

  • Full photos from Aperture to iphoto

I'm new to aperture but I'm trying to import full quality photos from aprture to iphoto, however all I can manage to get in iphoto is thumbnails a few hundred kb worth...Does anyone know how to transfer full quality jpegs over after editing with aperture..ps I can't get raw files off my canon 450d either...
    cheers David

    Davo
The only way to get "full photos" from Aperture to iPhoto is to export them from Aperture ant then import them to iPhoto.
If you use the Media Browser in iPhoto (File -> Show Aperture Library) then you can drag Previews over. You can increase the quality if the pics available to iPhoto this way by increasing the quality of the Previews.

  • After applying full scroll bar to the page including header and footer, Text editor ribbon actions cause page to automatically scroll down (while applying formatting)

After applying full scroll bar to the page including header and footer, I have provided content to
the page more than 100 lines and try to format the text from ribbon actions(format text area). On mouse over of font or fore color, the control jumps to the highlighted content area and not able to select the color. The page scrolls down and not able to click
    on any action.
    Consider this scenario also.
A content editor web part is added toward the bottom of the page.
Text is added to this (direct in the web part, not via a 'content link')
You highlight some text and go to the Markup Style dropdown...
Everything is fine until you hover over the "Paragraph" markup style, and suddenly the page scrolls to the web part you are editing, and you didn't have a chance
to click and apply the "Paragraph" formatting
I have tried testing this with text typed directly into the Content Editor, text pasted in from somewhere else, and text pasted in from somewhere else using "Paste as
Plaintext" option in the ribbon.  In each scenario, I get the same results.
Furthermore, I have also tested this in both IE8 and IE9 and get the same results.
I can get it to occur most regularly with trying to apply the Paragraph "Markup Style" but
I've also seen this happen with Font Size (any font size).  It's very frustrating since you aren't able to actually apply the formatting you need because the page jumps before you can click.  Has anyone experienced this before. Any feedback would
    help.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that after applying full scroll bar to the page including header and footer, Text editor ribbon actions cause page to automatically scroll down (while applying formatting).
I try to apply full scroll bar to the page including header and footer, the ribbon is missing after I scroll down to the web part. And I cannot apply the "Paragraph" markup style to the content.
I recommend to use the SharePoint core styles to preserve the native functionality and GUI.
By design in SharePoint, the ribbon is always at the top. When you select the content, you can apply the "Paragraph" markup style in the ribbon.
    Thanks,

  • Full 64-bit Aperture 3 Performance Maxed

All Macs running Snow Leopard that are Core2Duo or better are capable of full 64-bit, but from reading the threads I would say almost nobody is doing this.
Currently, of all Macs on the market now, only the X-Serve boots into full 64 bit mode by default.
I guess that this is because Apple assumes a server is typically professionally managed, meaning the operator would have the technical savvy to verify that all required software is 64 bit clean....ALSO servers do not tend to have any excess software on them that is not needed for them to function.
Stark contrast to the overstuffed user machines cluttered with useless old files PLUS there is still lot of current valid user software not 64-bit capable yet, like PS CS4. Knowing this, Apple does not want a lot of complaints from average, non IT professional users for current non-64 bit incompatibilities, and that is understandable. This makes Apple's default boot mode for Snow Leopard on user machines 32 bit mode. Currently Apple makes users DELIBERATELY select full 64 bit mode at boot...and in so assuming that these hopefully savvy users know the possible consequences.
Now when running in the default 32 bit mode, 64 bit apps will operate in either 64 bit, or if so selected in their Info box, 32 bit to maximize compatibility. While running a 64 bit app increases its performance, it is only a portion of the performance running a full 64-bit machine will do.
If your system has a lot of extensions or old drivers or other associated crapola <(technical term) left over from years of upgrades, you might just want to pass on this suggestion right now...HOWEVER if your system is decently clean, a fresh install of the OS and Aperture 3, you will most likely be fine.
Aperture 3 running on a full 64-bit machine is a delightful improvement, and in my limited experience to date SMOKIN' fast.
Now if you are on still on Leopard, congrats, you kept better performance than the early SL adopter folks on Aperture 2...BUT Aperture 3 NEEDS SL to make it sing, so if you are going to move to Aperture 3, UPGRADE to SL 10.6.2 NOW.
Assuming we are all on SL 10.6.2 now let's talk full 64 bit, and getting all the performance your hardware can deliver.
OK then...On this clean system, restart and hold both the 6 and 4 keys down during boot. You can then verify the full 64 bit mode by looking in the System Profiler. Select About this Mac... More Info... then click on the Software title header in the left column and in the second to last line you should see:
" 64-bit Kernel and Extensions: Yes"
WELCOME to your full 64 bit machine.
After checking you are in full 64 bit, launch Aperture 3, and Activity Monitor...to monitor performance.
If all goes well, Aperture should now be SMOKIN fast. I can hold the arrow key down in full screen and D3X .NEFs render almost immediately, smaller files a blink. 6GB on my MBP shows no pageouts running just Aperture 3. An 8 core Mac Pro with lots of RAM will be MUCH faster due to full 64 bit AND the parallel core thread processing.
Imports with backups to a secondary disk (YAAY!!!) are so fast I cannot believe it, I think it is faster than Photo Mechanic, which is my gold standard for import/ingest speed.
Now the two finger 6 and 4 key reboot method is only temporary, the next reboot it will revert to 32 bit mode, which is handy at this point in time if you have run into crashing or other problems.
If you find you have a clean system you can make it boot into 64 bit all the time, but that is part of a larger performance discussion...just try this and see if you are doing better in terms of performance.
Remember, most plug-ins, etc. are not going to be 64 bit yet...in fact Aperture even displays this in the File:Export... menu where it says (32 bit) next to the names of plug-ins. OBVIOUSLY (I hope) it probably would not be such a great idea to try these in this full 64-bit mode (ya think?). Just enjoy the stuff that does =).
So...chances are VERY good you probably cannot do all your work in this mode just yet...BUT...if you are limiting tasks for the moment to just Aperture and the OS, like library conversion, or learning the new features, you probably will blow through this much faster than in 32 bit.
ALSO, while I am talking Aperture performance...
Aperture also needs really fast storage to see max performance with big libraries (500GB+), and I mean an eSATA host with a striped array. Firewire 800 and lesser technologies are 3-4 times slower on average. Sadly, Only the 17" MBP (and all previous size version MBPs) and the Mac Pro can run an eSATA host. To me this is the single biggest drawback to the iMac, and seems REALLY silly now that you can buy an iMac with an i7 processor with a great graphics card...but only the internal single drive is eSATA, and you are stuck with FW800 for storage.
Anyway, I am running a Sonnet Tempo Pro Express 34 card in my MBP connected to Sonnet Fusion D500P array with 10TB of disk space, formatted using SoftRAID. My dedicated space for Aperture benchmarks on this setup at about 130MB/sec on average of all tests. Two crucial facts here is that the Sonnet drivers for the card (v2.2.1) are full 64-bit as well as the fact that a 64 bit version of the SoftRAID driver is included with Snow Leopard for users in 64 bit mode, which will allow you to keep existing volumes and access data from the 64 bit version of Snow Leopard.
Anyway, fellow Aperture 3 adopters I encourage you to give it a shot...and I hope this results in some smiling faces...
    Sincerely,
    K.J. Doyle
PS No flames please... of course since this is all new ground YMMV... proceed at your own risk, there is a reason Apple is not making this easy right now...'nuff said, I hope.

Kevin -- is it your understanding that Aperture can and will default to 64 bit performance without need to reboot 6-4?
    Hi Miguel,
He is correct, Aperture will be running in 64 bit, but the rest of the machine will not, and Aperture is dependent on many other subsystems, storage being #1 given the huge size of libraries. As I said above, I am pretty sure Apple would not recommend you run full 64 because of the other incompatibilities that exist on the machine, it would cause too many complaints from those who do not understand the need for 64 bit clean operation, and that all apps are not there yet.
HOWEVER, there is a lot more to this than just Aperture's operation, as it is an app that uses many resources.
There is a very significant difference in operating my eSATA array with 64 bit drivers and a full 64 bit machine, and therefore Aperture runs much faster than it would using the 32 bit drivers for the storage.
There are other issues as well with greatly improved OS memory operations and other technical issues that impact this as well. The more RAM you have the bigger the improvement. This impacts parallel processing of threads, and again gives more time to Aperture in the bargain.
    Sincerely,
    K.J. Doyle

  • Rmbp crushes when using  full screen with Aperture

I already updated my rmbp to Mountain Lion and updated my Aperture with the latest version.
My rmbp crushes in full screen after I use the Quick Brushes tool. My rmbp shows a message in four languages and restarts...
But if I don't use full screen everything is ok...

The message in four languages indicates a "kernal panic".  These crashes are system wide, and should be avoided.
Unfortunately, that's all I can offer.  You might search for "Aperture full screen kernal panic".  As this seems to be repeatable, you should submit a bug report to Apple via "Aperture➞Provide Aperture feedback".
One small thing: does it happen with no external devices attached (second monitor, mouse, etc.)?

  • Report in Payment Wizard - Non Included Transaction Report

    Hi Guys,
Within the Payment Wizard is a report called " Non Included Transaction Report", later in the wizard also referred to as "Error Log Report (System)".
I would like to recreate this report so that I can add some additional fields on the Purchase Invoice side only, to make the report more helpful.
I believe the tables I require are PWZ5 and OPOR, however when I run my query I get 96,000 plus entries returned which is not correct for just one month !
This is the query I have:
    SELECT distinct T0.[InvID], T0.[CardCode], T0.[CardName], T1.[DocDate], T1.[DocDueDate], T1.[Ref2] AS [Supplier Invoice No], T0.[Amount], T0.[ErrDisc] FROM PWZ5 T0 , OPOR T1 WHERE T1.[DocDueDate] >=[%0] AND  T1.[DocDueDate] <=[%1]
Am I on the right tracks or have I missed the mark by a country mile - could someone please point me in the right direction or has anyone else recreated this ?

    Hi,
    Try this:
    SELECT distinct T0.InvID, T0.CardCode, T0.CardName, T1.DocDate, T1.DocDueDate, T1.Ref2 AS 'Supplier Invoice No', T0.Amount, T0.ErrDisc FROM dbo.PWZ5 T0
    INNER JOIN dbo.OPCH T1 ON T0.InvID=T1.DocEntry
    WHERE T1.DocDueDate >=[%0] AND T1.DocDueDate <=[%1]
    Thanks,

  • Full Version of Aperture

I noticed that there is a huge price difference between the boxed version of Aperture at the Apple Store and the Download version at the Mac App Store.  Is there any difference in the programs?  Is the boxed version a fuller version?
    Thanks,
    -Nancy

If you bought from the AppStore, you can install it on up to 5 Macs you own, provided it is for personal use. Just download again from the App Store on your other machines, using exactly the same apple id as you used when you bought it originally.
If there is an older Aperture version on that Mac you need to deinstall it first, or at least remove it from the Applications folder.

  • Move from trial to full version of Aperture 3

I have been using the trial version of Aperture 3 for a week now, and I am really impressed with it. I would like to buy the App version from the App Store. What is the best way of doing this? Do I have to remove the trial version and then purchase and install the App version, or do I just purchase and install the App version and it will overwrite the trial version? I have read a few threads where someone went from the trial to the full version and because of the way then did it, it could not accept updates because it was still being seen as a trial version. I am still new to Apple and not comfortable with the way Macs handle software installation and removal. Any help will be appreciated.

We're in a kind of limbo with Aperture right now because of the transition to the Mac App Store. Logically that BUY link should take you to the MAS and let you buy from there without having anything else to do. But I don't know if they've changed it to do that — you'll have to try and see for yourself.
What may happen is that it'll work like it did before and you'll instead get taken to the Apple Store and be offered the $199 full version or $99 upgrade. Which is a little odd and — I have to agree with you — very un-Apple.
Basically there are two versions of Aperture 3 floating around: the $79 MAS version and the $199 Apple Store version. Both are identical in function but the $199 version still works with a serial number. You also get a DVD but frankly I haven't used an Aperture DVD since version 1.5 (I've been downloading the trial and purchasing a serial number upgrade since then).
    Confusing? Yeah, it is.
But unless you want to pay more for the same thing, I'd go with the $79 MAS version. You might not even have to delete the trial but it's just a precaution in light of certain stories on this forum. Deleting the trial application won't affect anything you've done with Aperture 3 until now so don't worry, it's really not a big deal.
    Best

  • Where do I download a full version of Aperture 3?

I downloaded the trial back in 2010 and later bought it receiving a license key in an email.  Now the application (3.4.1) crashes on launch every time and I want to reinstall.  Is a full download available anywhere?  App Store does not recognize I bought it.

See this support article on how to reinstall your Aperture version: You'll find a link to the trial there.
Aperture 3.4: May quit unexpectedly on launch after updating
If you orginially installed Aperture 3 from a trial version:
Go to the Applications folder and delete Aperture.
    Download the Aperture 3.1 Trial.
Open the Aperture Trial disc image.
    Double-click the "Aperture Trial.mpkg" file.
Follow the onscreen instructions to install Aperture.
After the installation completes, choose Software Update from the Apple () menu.
Install the Aperture 3.4 update from the list of available updates.
Note: If you are using OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 or later, you may receive an alert stating that Aperture is from an unidentified developer. This can occur when you try to install Aperture from DVD or the trial download. See OS X Mountain Lion: The app is from an unidentified developer for details on how to successfully install Aperture in this situation.
