Full Server Backup for Domain Computer

Having Windows 2012 Domain Controllers. I have a requirement to provide a backup for one domain controller to be sent to a another data center, so that if all our main datacenters are destroyed for any reason, we can have a media with backup of our AD.
So i took a Full Server Backup for one of our domain controllers, put it on a tape, send it to the security team so that they can send it to the standby datacenter.
Security team asking me that on the standby datacenter, they want to simulate complete disaster ( that is all domain controllers are destroyed) and they want to give me a machine so that i can restore the full server backup of AD on it.
Is this supported ? To save the Full Server backup of a domain controller in a Tape so that it can be restored in standby datacenter in different computer when things get bad?

As Tero already mentioned, one you have your test environment up and running, you need to prepare your DRP (Disaster Recovery Plan).
See that:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc757662(v=ws.10).aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727048.aspx
Make sure that you are taking periodic system state backups of at least one DC/GC server.
For the standby datacenter, you can simply promote a new DC/DNS/GC server there and keep it active to be used in case of disasters as I previously mentioned. By configuring properly your AD sites and subnets, you can be sure that your Windows servers and
client computers do not use this DC for daily authentication.

  • Full server backup problem

    hi there,
i want to perform a full server backup for my RHEL ver 4 over which oracle 9i is installed. Total file systems are 6 and size of oracle database over these partitions is nearly 250 GB. size of total server partitions is nearly 350G. We have a HP DLT tape drive with a storage capacity of 400 G. I want to perform a full server backup on this DLT. I'm using tar ie. "tar -cvf <dlt> / ". but problem is that after writing some partitions ie. after writing 3 partitions tar exits itself without giving any error.
This is somewhat like cold backup.... database goes down n full server backup performed n database opens. but in my case database is properly going down but tar is writing only three partitons and after that without giving any error next statement executes and database starts.
    Please guide.
    will be very thankful
    amrit

    thanks,
alright so i cant take ful server backup then.
now problem is that i want cold backup for my database. and for that i've created a script which generates a spool file using various v$ views ie. datafile, ctrlfile n redo.
then this script is executed from crontab.
now in this script first statement says like "tar -cvf <dlt> /filepath1"
then second statement goes with argument " -rvf " which rewinds complete tape and then starts writing. there are 26 datafiles in my database and some of them are nearly 20G.
now whenever this datafiles are written using -rvf ..... it takes too much time ie. i scheduled it at 23:00 and next day till 09:00 database was not up..... it was still writing to dlt. then i haver to interrupt this backup and start my database.
we are not using any third party tool. plseas guide me what stretigy should i follow to have my cold backup done.
although this same technique of writing is working with one of my server which is using solaris9. in RHEL 4 there's problem.
    please guide.
    thanks in advance

  • Bare metal restore of full server backup fails with RPC error 0x800706BA (server 2012)

With Windows Server 2012, after creating a successful windows server backup (full server), I am unable to do a bare metal restore of the system.
EFI System Partition, C:, D: are the volumes on a single array (Raid 5).
Loading WinRE and launching re-image, the full server restore stops after completing the C: restore just after beginning the D: drive restore (data volume) with the error with the message about RPC error 0x800706BA, unavailable.
The system will not boot as a result of the failure.
    What may be causing this?
    [edit]
I think I have two things working against me here... one, Volume Shadow Copy service wasn't running in WinPE and two.. the D: volume contains data deduplication.
I think this is causing some of my problems.
Is there an additional service that I need to start in WinPE to get a volume that was deduplicated restored perhaps using wbadmin?

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply Shaon.
The hardware system is identical; however, I am increasing storage capacity from 12TB to 16TB.  Basically, the system is the same, just new hard drives (4x4TB versus 4x3TB).  Drives are all identical enterprise class drives and I am actually using
the same system (backup, swap drives then restore).
I tried both using the WinRE restore (re-image) with the backup set, and tried using wbadmin.  Both produce same RPC unavailable messages (although using the GUI based tool via WinRE provides the additional error code #).
I do not have any idea what to look at to try to figure this one out.
    [edit]
I was just informed of this posting:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/147efccc-e0e9-4458-852e-c3a44ae5cb64/the-system-image-restore-failed-error-details-he-rpc-server-is-unavailable-0x800706ba?forum=windowsbackup
and in my case, this lab server does in fact act also as a DC as well as a file server...  do I need to spin up a secondary controller (perhaps in a VM on another machine) to do this restore?

  • Time Machine backup for old computer has been named for new computer

On my new Time Capsule, I backed up the entire disk from my older computer. While consulting with a live help technician for an unrelated problem, he had me reset the Time Capsule using the newer computer. To resume use of the Time Machine backup from my older computer, I had to gain permission . . . and subsequently discovered the reason why. Reseting with the new computer caused the backup volume to be renamed with the new computer's name.
Sooo, 1) how do I correct the naming error, and 2) will further confusion occur when I then go to back up the new computer?

It may or may not ask you to reformat the disk when you set it up as the backup for that new computer. If it does, I think you can cancel it.
What I would do is open Migration Assistant, then import your applications/documents/etc. onto the new computer, and then use the Time Machine disk for backup (formatting it if it asks you to).
You'll at least have recent files and stuff like that, which may not be as good as an incremental history but at least it's something.

  • Windows Server Backup for VM with Exchange

We have Server 2012 standard and its running Hyper- V. The VM that is running is Server 2008 R2 Standard which is also our Exchange 2010 Server.
I know you can use Server backup 2012 to easily backup Hyper-V machine. But will it be so easy if that VM is running Exchange on it? I am going to back it up to an external drive.
This article shows how to backup a HV machine but I can't really find anything on a HV machine with exchange.

  • Which Server Version for Domain Controller do I Need

    Hello
We are currently running two domain controllers with Server 2003 on them.  We have a standard TCP/IP star topology networking  including web servers, files servers, sql, iis etc.
We are upgrading 5 of our servers to 2012r2 and are using them as "host" servers for upgraded IIS (2012r2) and WebGrabber (2008r2) servers and these servers will be set up as virtual machines (the IIS and web grabbers) on the hosts.
My question is will using Windows Server 2003 domain controllers cause issues in the advanced settings in 2012r2 and Hyper-V?  Should we upgrade our Domain Controllers and if so to what version?  2008r2 or 2012r2?
    Thanks!

    At least Windows Server 2012
I highly recommend to upgrade the Domain Controllers to at least Windows Server 2012.
Besides the new functionality described by others in this thread, Windows Server 2012-based Domain Controllers (and beyond) offer virtualization safeguards, building on the VM-GenerationID offered by your new virtualization platform. This functionality helps
to protect your Domain Controllers from USN rollbacks and Lingering Objects. It also unlocks the Domain Controller Cloning functionality, that may help you deploy your five Domain Controllers faster and more streamlined.

    Getting to Windows Server 2012
In terms of getting your Active Directory to Windows Server 2012, there's good news and slightly bad news. The bad news is you can't in-place upgrade your Domain Controllers to Windows Server 2012. The good news: This makes the transition scenario
    more appealing.
Instead of upgrading your Domain Controllers on their physical hardware, and, then, convert them to virtual machines, you can build new virtual Windows Server 2012 Domain Controllers, while your Windows Server 2003 Domain Controllers remain running.
Then, when you're ready to get rid of your Windows Server 2003 Domain Controllers, you simply demote them and remove them from your network. I've written a detailed step-by-step on this:

  • Scripting for Windows Server Backup for Exchange 2010

    Hi,
I'm new to writing scripts and was wondering if anyone could assist with writing a script to backup an Exchange Server in a windows 2008 r2 environment.  I currently use Windows Server Backup with a full VSS backup to run exchange backups, however,
each backup overwrites the previous one, and i would really like to have multiple backups.  I would also like  to specify backup log locations, and have emails sent upon successful backups or failed backups.  I am trying to write this powershell
but cant seem to get things to work.
    Thanks
    Debbian

You can use PowerShell in conjunction with the Windows Backup command line utility, wbadmin.exe. The code below should help get you started. I have included the date in order to help maintain multiple back ups, but if you do more than one back up per day,
you will need to change the date format to include the time. You cannot control the built in logging of Windows Backup, but you could collect your own backup information and write that out to a text file. As far as sending emails, look into the Send-MailMessage
cmdlet including the -Attachment parameter that could send your log file with your mail message. Cheers.
    $Date = Get-Date -Format 'MM-dd-yyyy'
    $Path = "\\server\share\$Date"
    New-Item -Path $Path -ItemType Directory | Out-Null
Start-Process wbadmin.exe -ArgumentList "start backup -backupTarget:$Path -allCritical -vssFull -quiet"

  • How do I remove a backup for a computer I no longer have

I am running low with space on my Time Capsule.  I had four devices backing up to the Time Capsule but one of the four is not in my possession anymore.  How do I delete the backup for that device to free up space?

    Thank you!
I used the Finder in Mountain Lion.  Unable to connect an ethernet at this time so I went through the WiFi; it did take a some time.  As soon as I had enough space the Time Capsule/Time machine went into action.

  • Security for domain computer only accessible for administrative users

    Dear users,
I was wondering if there is any GPO so I can secure some computers from being used by other users.
This is how the situation is currently:
There 600 computers and all are member of a domain.
Now I want 4 computers that only can be used by Administrators so no one else can logon on these computers.
But I can't seem to find that option, or its not working.
Does anyone here knows a good KB or any other related article I can read to arrange this?
    Kind regards,
    Martijn

    Hi,
Would you please tell more information regarding the 4 computers here? Are they domain controllers?
With domain controllers, the default settings is that only members of the Account Operators, Administrators, Backup Operators, Print Operators, and Server Operators groups have the
    Allowed logon locally system right.
For workstations and servers, members who have the logon rights are Administrators, Backup Operators, Power Users, Users, and Guest. If we want to change the default settings about logon locally with workstations and servers, we may consider to modify this
    policy.
More information regarding allow logon locally, please see:
    Allow log on locally

    Hope this may help

  • Sharepoint full farm backup generates sql logs for search application differential backups

We are running full farm backups for sharepoint. Backup completes normally but SQL logs are generated for differential backups for search service application.
    it says something like:
Database differential changes were backed up: database: search_serv.......
    Thanks,
    Basit

This can happen for a few reasons, such as is disk contention or network issues. Are you backing up to a shared directory on the SQL Server? If not, try that.

  • Incomplete Recovery Fails using Full hot backup & Archive logs !!

    Hello DBA's !!
I am doing on Recovery scenario where I have taken One full hot backup of my Portal Database (EPR) and Restored it on New Test Server. Also I restored Archive logs from last full hot backup for next 6 days. Also I restored the latest Control file (binary) to their original locations. Now, I started the recovery scenario as follows....
    1) Installed Oracle 10.2.0.2 compatible with restored version of oracle.
    2) Configured tnsnames.ora, listener.ora, sqlnet.ora with hostname of Test server.
    3) Restored all Hot backup files from Tape to Test Server.
    4) Restored all archive logs from tape to Test server.
    5) Restored Latest Binary Control file from Tape to Test Server.
    6) Now, Started recovery using following command from SQL prompt.
    SQL> recover database until cancel using backup controlfile;
    7) Open database after Recovery Completion using RESETLOGS option.
Now in Above scenario I completed steps upto 5) successfully. But when I execute the step 6) the recovery completes with Warning : Recovery completed but OPEN RESETLOGS may throw error " system file needs more recovery to be consistent " . Please find the following snapshot ....

Please Let me know why my Incomplete Recovery using Archive logs Goes Fail ?
    Atul Patil.

oh you made up a new thread so here again:
    there is nothing wrong.
You restored your backup, archives etc.
you started your recovery and oracle applyed all archives but the archive
    '/oracle/EPR/oraarch/1_9624_601570270.dbf'
does not exist because it represents your current online redo log file and that is not present.
the recovery process cancels by itself.
    the solution is:
    restart your recovery process with:
recover database until cancel using backup controlfile
and when oracle suggests you '/oracle/EPR/oraarch/1_9624_601570270.dbf'
    type cancel!
now you should be able to open your database with open resetlogs.

  • Full OS backup and restoration

I have a Win 2012 R2 server installed on a Dell PE730 box. The box is highly critical and there are lot of configurations in that server that I want to create a full backup and incase of failure of the box, the backup should be useful to restore the box
    with all configurations.
I don't use any third party tools for backup - use Windows backup role in Win 2012, also plans to use the Windows feature itself to restore also.
What is the best method of creating a backup and restore plan. Pls suggest

    Hi,
You can use a full server backup to perform all types of recoveries, including system state and bare metal recoveries. We recommend this option. Then you could recover your server operating system or full server by using Windows Recovery Environment.

  • Cannot set up or modify backup for client computers.

I am running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials and was able to set up back ups for all of my machines when I initially set up the network. All backups were running fine.
I have added a disk drive to one of my machines and correctly started receiving messages that the drive should be added to the backup. When I try to customize the backup for the machine I get an error pop up with the message ""The
task "Customize Backup for the computer" did not complete successfully"". I tried all of my other machines and get the same message.
I also needed to reconnect a machine to the server and in doing so had to disconnect it from the server, losing the backups stored and now I get the message ""The task "Set up Backup for the computer" did not complete successfully""
    and cannot backup this computer.
I have checked all of the logs and cannot find any definitive errors occurring at the times I have tried to modify or set up backups. Can anyone help?
Since originally asking this question, the Server 2012 R2 Update applied and now I no longer have Client's, User's or Storage listed on the tabs in the dashboard so I do not know if backups are being done or not. I tried to run the connector on the clients
but get a forbidden error when I try to connect to the link. does anyone have any suggestions on how to correct these errors?

    Hi,
Before going further, would you please let me know if the client computers are dynamic disks? Please understand that Windows Server 2012 Essentials does not support backing up and restoring
dynamic disks on client computers. In addition, if the client backup folder is on the storage pool? At this time, please also run the Windows Server 2012 Essentials BPA to have a general health check on the server, for details, there is a link for your reference:

Oh boy! Let me see what's going on. Are you using the VZW Cloud or the BUA app? Please try downloading the VZW Cloud app if you dont already have it. And once downloaded. Tap the 3 bars in the upper corner and go down to "TOOLS", then tap "RESTORE CONTENT". That should do it!
