Full Signal, Won't Join Available Network

I work for an airline, spend a lot of road time in different hotels. I have an issue with my PowerBook G4 where it will see the network, show a full-strength signal, but will not join. I get the 'You are not connected to the internet" screen. I run diagnostics, but nothing seems to work. It's infuriating to have a full signal for an open network and not be able to connect.
Latest time was at a Ramada in Houston. I've connected there before, but not this time, over 2 days and 3 or 4 reboots. When I went to the airport and my crew room, I connected fine.
I do notice that no signal is transmitted when I have this problem. It's like some outgoing firewall is preventing me from sending the request, but I don't know what would do it.
One other thing. When I went to Network Prefs/ Network/Show Airport/TCP-IP, I copied the number listed as the IP address and pasted it on to the url line. It brought me to an "Apache Web Server" page. I could move around in it as long as links contained only numbers and not worded addresses. Also the people at the front desk said no one else was having probs so it seems to be my PowerBook with the hoodoo.
Richard

EXACTLY! That's what I see, I don't get a re-direct to a login page, so I can't move on from there. The front desk did give me an 800 help number, but all I got was an unidentified voicemail who never called back.
I have this at the airport too if more than one wireless provider is available. Sometimes my airline's signal is bogged down, so I switch the Airport card to Sprint wifi, but I can't get a re-direct to their login screen, so I can't get on the internet. From what you said, the support people can give you the login url sometimes. I'll have to hope I have better luck next time with the support number. This particular time I rebooted ad naseum over two days with no luck. Or, whenever I CAN log in, I will have to bookmark the page for the future.
Thanks,
Richard

  • Time Capsule won't join existing network

    Hello,
I recently bought a new Time Capsule to use with Time Machine over my existing network. The problem that I'm having is that it isn't connecting to the network. When I do it on the Mac, I select More Options  > Join existing network but it just takes me right back to the "Create new network" screen. When I do it on iOS, it just says that an error has occurred. What is going on?
    Thanks,
    Jacob Saunders

The existing wireless network could be incompatible.
It is a super poor way to run the TC.. the following things happen.
The TC will become super slow.. all access to the TC will be via the existing wireless network.
The TC ethernet ports will be shut off.
The TC wireless will work as a simple client of the current network. So you will lose all value in buying an AC wireless router.
I strongly recommend you plug the TC into the existing router by ethernet. If that is not possible there is alternative of using a wireless bridge to the TC.. and maintaining its usefulness..

  • Full Signal, Won't Connect

I just bought a WRT54GS, brought it home and set it up according to the cd.
    It's connected as such:
Ethernet cable from cable modem to Router.
Ethernet cable from Router to PC1.
Wireless connections to PCs 2 and 3.
PC1's Internet works just fine. PCs 2 and 3 worked for about a half hour after I set the router up. Then while using PC2, the internet just stopped. I went back to the "View Available Wireless Networks" display and my network was there. All 5 bars, excellent signal strength. I choose it and press Connect, it says "Detecting Network Type..." then errors and says "Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of vailable networks, and try to connect again."
PC2 is about 5 feet from the router. I tried setting the channel to 11, and lowering the beacon time to 50. It still will not work.
I even tried resetting the router, and my Cable Modem.
I don't know what to do here... Perfect Signal on both PC2 and PC3 and both are within 10 ft of the router (PC3 being a bit farther away than PC2), and they won't connect. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Nope. Firmware is the lastest. I am checking once a week to see if there is a new firmware.
For my case, I am suspecting that it could be the number of connected wireless client. Linksys tech told me that WRT54G, GS and GX can support a maximum of 16. At the moment the maximum I got is 11 then the error appears then any additional attempt to connect will get ... "Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of vailable networks, and try to connect again."
As for doitle case, can you try to check if you have disable all the logging functions? For example, the Firewall Log. It could be memory problem. I do not know the memory size of all the WRT54G series router. But it is just a guess.

  • Power Mac G4 won't join wds network

This is driving me mad. A week ago, I had a nice network set up... time capsule -> express set up as bridge (?) -> express which meant my whole house was covered by wi-fi signal and both my MacBook and my G4 (2 x 1.25GHZ with extreme card) workeed.
For some reason it crashed badly and, after three days of trying (don't know why it was so hard) I have managed to set up the network as a WDS (channel 11). Now my macbook works all over the house.. including right next to my G4 (with 5 bars).... but my G4 does not pick up the network AT ALL... i.e. does not even recognise that it is there (although it does recognise my neighbour's network... so the card is OK).
Have done everything according to the manual.. but am stumped. what on earth could be going on? suggestions most appreciated.
By the way, both macs are on latest version of leopard etc...

Disconnect your external devices & cables; remove the battery; reset the PMU; depress and hold in the front power button for a few seconds; let the Mac sit for 30 minutes; reconnect only the power cord, keyboard, monitor and mouse; then attempt startup again without the battery. If it starts up, then shut down, disconnect the cables, re-insert the battery and power up again.
If it instead still doesn't start up, then disconnect the hard drive(s), reseat your internal cards and RAM, reset the PMU again and try booting to disc. If still no luck, disconnect the monitor and try again, listening for the startup chime. If still no luck, test the AGP's power supply. If the power supply checks out okay, then look to the front panel board or the logic board as potential problem sources.
The internal battery should read at least 3.3 volts DC when checked with a voltmeter. If it reads anything lower, definitely replace it. A fresh 3.6 volt replacement battery should read 3.6 to 3.9 volts.

  • White Macbook (2006?) won't find available networks?

So my macbook (got it sometime in '06) had suddenly stopped functioning in any wi-fi capacity.  It says it is searching for networks but doesn't find anything.  I've tried cycling it on and off and have all so rebooted the whole machine.  The network is working perfectly on the other 2 computers, 3 iphones and ipad in the house so I don't think it's on that end.  Haven't had to do much troubleshooting on this front before.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

I had this same problem with a Dell Laptop, before I moved to the Mac line... Your problem is treatable, but not free. Your Wi-Fi receiver has died... One option you have for reparing it is to take to and Apple Retail store or Best Buy and have them perform diagnostics and replace the Wi-Fi reader. A cheaper option would be to buy a USB Wi-Fi reader... However I don't recomend this, because they are cheaply made and don't always work... Hope this answers your question!

Any ideas?  At times, the on/off button in wifi settings is "ghosted".

    See:

One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem.
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.

  • Airport reads full signal, but can not connect to internet

    Hi everyone,
I have a new powerbook that I'm trying to connect to a home network which is set up with a cable modem and a wireless linksys router. The airport reads that it has full signal from the "linksys" wireless network, however I can not get on the internet through the signal. When I connect the computer directly through the the ethernet port, it works fine. I've taken the computer to another location with the same cable modem and wireless linksys router setup, and it worked fine through the wireless. I've actually had this problem quite a few times with various wireless networks (it connects directly, but not through the full signal that reads on the airport), and I was wondering if there are some setting that need to be changed or checked for certain wireless networks. Any help would be great. Thanks,
    Sofi

I'm sorry I think this makes thing harder, but I have no idea. It's actually a friend's network so I can't check at the moment. I know there is no password to the network and that they have two pcs running fine wirelessly. Is there a way I can check these settings and see what's going on?

  • Won't connect to wireless network but indicates full signal strength

I just bought a new macbook pro last week and connected to my home's wireless internet immediately with no problems. Until this morning it was working fine. When i opened my computer and it woke from sleep it would no longer provide me with internet access. Both skype and safari won't work but my icon indicates that i have full signal strength and that i am in fact connected to my home network. I ran a diagnostic test and the result was that it "appeared to be connected" yet i still am not able to access the internet. When i plug an ethernet cable into my mac the internet works and all the other computers in the house (all non-macs) have wireless internet access.
    Thanks for any help!

When i opened my computer and *it woke from sleep* it would no longer provide me with internet access.
Sometimes a restart will correct network problems since you are getting the full bars and the diagnostic test confirms +"appeared to be connected".+

Since your computer is new, check Software Update & make sure you have all the latest "network" updates for your model computer.

  • MacBook WIFI issue. States full signal but won't connect!

    Hey all,
I'm at the end of my tether here! I brought my MacBook back in Feb and loved it, was so pleased with it. A couple of months later the screen broke, so it was taken back to Comet who sent it away and repaired it, turns out the screen was faulty and there was also a "defective logic board". Got it back after 3 weeks and all was fine, until now!
When i purchased the MacBook i needed to buy a new router so i got an N router which has always worked perfectly, over the last week or 2 i found the connection kept dropping out, this happened before and it was VirginMedias problem which they fixed. I checked with them and there's no fault, checked the router and there's no fault and no settings changed, i then decided to try a neighbours WIFI, again, the MacBook connected and stated full signal but when i opened Safari it says i wasn't connected. The problem got worse and worse and i'm now at the point where i cannot connect to any network through WIFI at all, the only way i can get internet is if i use my Vodafone WIFI Dongle...which isn't the cheapest or easiest way of connecting to the net! I also have an iPhone 4 and a iPod Touch and they both still connect to the WIFI without any problems.
If anyone can help i would appreciate it so much! If i take the MacBook back to Comet they'll only want to send it away again and i'm not happy to do that, 1) Because i'll be without it for at least 3 weeks and i need it for work and 2) Since i got it back from the last repair i've discovered it wasn't put back together very well and the screws have been falling out of the base ever since.

Since you cannot connect, even at at another location, I'd agree that it seems to be a hardware problem, rather than ISP or software settings.
If purchased new or refurb direct from Apple, your MacBook came with a 1-year warranty, so you should be well within the initial warranty period.
If you're not happy with the service you're getting from Comet, escalate! Ask for the manager, and keep going up the chain until you get some satisfaction.
Finally, if Comet can't meet your needs, try another Apple authorized repair center or an Apple Store.

  • Wi-fi icon shows full signal - iphone 4s won't connect to anything?

    Hi,
My iphone 4s shows that I am connected to wi-fi and have a full signal, however it is not actually connecting to anything; safari, apps, can't send email, can't 'see' phone on my mobile phone tracker etc.
I tried reseting the network connections, which did solve the problem but literally only for a few minutes. So frustrating.
Has anyone got a permanant solution to this problem?  All relevant software is bang up to date.  The phone itself is brand new, only 1 day old.
    Please help!

Try rebooting the router. Just pull the power for a few seconds, plug back in, wait for the router to settle and see if you still have the problem.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Signal icons for available networks on wifi tab are missing :(

ive been having this problem since i upgraded to mountain lion.. the signal icons for available networks on wifi tab are missing..i do not have any problem with my connection but it would be better to see signal status before i connect to any available network....this is what it looks like...

i did that many times but its still not working . its only for the icon on the menu bar which i have...i'm missing those signal icons beside the lock icons when im trying to search for available networks. ..if you could notice the above photo, i encircled it..the lock icon is usually accompanied by a status signal icon but its now gone....

  • My iMac won't join the correct network

This is a new iMac with Lion.  The network is ok because all my other devices work fine with it.  The network is in the list and when I select it my mac joins without problem, but won't join it automatically.  I've also tried to move my network up in the list but that doesn't seem to work either.

Mine is the only network listed in the Perferred Networks List in the advanced settings.  The "Remember networks this computer has joined" is checked.
The problem is that when I wake my computer up, it won't find the network.  I updated my airport extreme last week and this problem started after that.  However, none of the other devices using this network are having any problems.

  • Airport Express won't join my existing wireless network...

I have Broadband in my house. I have a wireless modem also. I have spent hours trying to have Airport Express join the network so I can use the music streaming feature, but I have so far not been successful. I have seen a lot of references to it being very easy and straightforward to set up with it doing most of the work itself. As in, plug in AE to a power socket, open Airport Utility and follow the instructions... It doesn't appear to be that simple, not by a long shot. Can anyone outline how this can be done in simple steps? All of the online steps I have tried do not work, with many of them referencing aspects of the Airport Utility GUI that don't seem to exist...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
For the record, I DO NOT want to replace my existing wireless router, i just want AE to join the network...
    Thanks...
    Ronan

I have the same problem - the AE wont join my Draytek 2600 wireless network. I can stream music wired, but it refuses to join the wireless network. I have tried WEP, WPA, WPA 2 etc. Always get amber flashing light. Ive spent about 5 hours solid on it so far, and I'm a networking expert.
No other device on the planet has problems connecting to my wireless. currently I have:
    1) Belkin wireless Skype phon (no problems)
    2) SOHO wireless IP camera (no problems)
    3) Intel Macbook pro (no problems)
    4) G4 Macbook (no problems)
    5) Dell D600 XP notebook (no problems)
Try to connect the AE? No chance. Its just broken.
I have tried every conceiveable manual setting on the device also.
If I manually set the ip (outside the DHCP range, but within the subnet), subnet, DNS sever, domain etc, I get a GREEN light, but nothing can communicate with it. The utility cant see it, and itunes cant see it.
The real problem is there is no way to know if the problem is with DHCP or the wireless. Does green light mean it has a wireless connection, or it has a valid IP?
Interestingly, if I start it with a wired connection, get a green light, then stream music to it, then pull out the wire, the green light stays, and music players for about another minute (presumably wirelessly, but who knows?) before the music stops and the device (replete with green light), becomes dead to the network.
APPLE desperately needs to sort this out. Its junk.
