Full Strength to Low Strength

So we replaced our old wireless router with the WRT110 and when my upstairs computer searches for the available networks to connect to it detects our network at full strength (all bars filled). But then when I connect and enter the password my little windows xp wireless configuration tool tips read connection: low and it drops to two bars. When I switch to using the Linksys Monitor my signal strength is nearly full, but the Link quality is often only one bar though it occasionally jumps up to around 50%. I really don't understand why it's so inconsistent and why I receive conflicting info before and after connection.

Update: Ok, here's my situation now (from the beginning). Here's what's connected: My dad's PC is plugged into the router directly in the basement. The wireless connections are the printer (right next to the PC), the Xbox 360 (1 floor up in the living room), and then my PC 2 floors up in the bedroom (which is using the range booster adapter with the two antennae). Previously, I had the wireless WRT54G router and while it worked ok, my PC in the bedroom had lots of connection problems. Sometimes the signal was "good", but it would sometimes drop to low and then out entirely. So we decided to buy the newer WRT101 with it's "RangePlus" technology as that was supposed to send a stronger signal and we thought that might solve the problem. Originally we wanted to go with one of the wireless N products, but was told by the salesman that it wouldn't work with the Xbox 360. Anyway, the signal itself seems to be stronger... the Xbox connects with full bars, and the "signal strength" reading appears to be strong according to the linksys tool on the upstairs PC. But the "Link" reading is often weak, and the actual performance is worse than with the old router. Websites load much slower, to the point of being unusable quite often. What I've tried so far: 1. I've reinstalled the wireless adapter in my upstairs PC. 2. I've moved the router off the floor to a higher point in the room. 3. I've attempted to change the settings through LELA but recieve an error message about the index it tried to access being out of bounds of the array. 4. I've attempted to change the settings through Windows by entering the ip address into windows explorer but recieve the cannot display webpage error page. 5. Tried the same thing through firefox but just get a blank page and nothing happens. 6. Pinged it through the cmd promt to make sure it's seeing the router ok. 7. Tried "repairing" LELA but the installation failed. Couldn't find a file in a temp folder.

  • Internet Is Connected At Full Strength, But Nothing Works?

I got my Macbook Pro in August 2008, and other than having difficulty picking up wireless networks, haven't had any connectivity issues. I've been at home since May 8th, and the wireless here has been working fine--up until a few days ago. Airport says that I am connected at full strength, and diagnostics says that there is nothing wrong with the connection, but nothing can access the internet (safari, firefox, adium, itunes, or updaters). Firefox tells me that there is a network timeout. I have a Linksys router, but I don't think that is the issue as a) three other computers in the house, the xbox 360, and my brother's ipod touch can all access the internet fine; and b)internet from my neighbors or my local coffee shop also don't work. I took it to my boyfriend's house, and it worked fine there where he has a mac network, but that could be a random happenstance as we only tried it once and my internet also started randomly working fine for a while last night. I'm trying to take it in to a genius bar before I leave for school in a week (as there isn't one close to where I'm going), but until then, anyone got any pointers? I've restarted Airport, the computer, the router, and the modem already. Thank you!

If you have some warranty left, and I assume you do, then why not call AppleCare first. Then, you'd have two more or less immediate shots at getting a fix. For lack of anything better to do, you could do the things mentioned in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1924527.

  • My new ipod is extremely slow, but i have full strength wifi. Works fast at others homes.

My new ipod touch 4g is extremly slow in my house, but i have full strength wifi. Works fast at others homes. When i try to connect to the internet it gives me a server error. All other ipods and laptops work fine in the home. Does anybody else have this issue?

Have you tried powering off and then back on your router?
    You can try:
    - Reseting the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
-Resetting network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network settings.

  • Full Strength Airport Network, No Web, Can access through neighbors!

Simly put, I get full strength from my Airport Express, open system (no WEP or WPA) but it will no go to the web! My MB Pro, MB, iBook, Powerbook all work fine, just the iMac. I can mooch from two of my neighbors open networks (for testing purposes only), I can stream from iTunes, I can log into other computers, only when I go to the web do I have problems.
I have reset, reinstalled, deleted Airport Prefs, ran AppleJack AUTO, all to no avail. Any ideas would be helpful.

I've been having problems where at times it was impossible to join the net but, like yourself, adding insult to injury I could connect to an open network with a weak signal and surf at blazing speeds. This thread :

explains my problem I really have found putting the primary DNS server settings into the PrefPanes under the Network System Preferences has helped a great deal.
It might be worth getting all your advance settings from your ISP and checking these against the settings in your router, also the normal stuff like checking / changing channel on the router etc. I also downloaded and monitor the other networks via iStumbler which has helped too.

  • AE full strength, cant get internet

Going through the posts it seems alot of people are having this problem, and no one seems to have a solution. I have a powerbook G-4, with AE that registers the network at full strength, but it wont allow me to open a web page. it says its not connecting to the server. i have tried the trouble shooting tips on the apple web page but no luck. the other computer we have on the same network works fine. is this problem a scam just to get people buying the apple care plan or what? any one have any potential solutions? im going crazy here. also, it didnt work when i connected it straight to the ethernet cable. PLEASE HELP!

    A few questions:
    - are you using an Airport Base Station, or a non-Apple wireless router
    - have you ever been able to get this Powerbook connected to your network? Or is this the first time you've tried it?
    - did this problem begin after installing a software update?

  • No Safari communication, but connected at full strength

I have an Cisco EA4500 router.  It has worked fine, but lately I have had a problem with communication to Apple products.
At times, when I try to use Safari to load a web page, the communication progress bar stalls and does not continue.  No page is loaded and the device just stalls out with basically a blank screen.
The WiFi symbol is present and at full strength.  I can get the communication back by clicking on the WiFi symbol, turning off WiFi and immediateley turning it on again.  This is true for all the Apple devices.  It does not happen every time or even a large number of times, but it could happen several times a day.
This seems to happen when I get the iPhone, iPad or either of the MacBooks out of sleep mode (I guess that having to put in my password in any of the products would qualify as coming out of sleep).  I seem to be getting mail and I don't notice it in the mail or other applications.
I have a Macbook Pro, a Macbook Air, 2-iphones, 1-iPad, a Windows Vista Dell, a Windows Vista Gateway, a WiFi Brother Printer, a Nest thermostat and 3 or 4 other things on my router.
About the time I upgraded to iOS7 and Mavericks and purchased my iPad Mini, I started to have these internet communications problems with the Apple products.  I don't seem to see any communication problem with any other thing connected to the router.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I've seen this many times with Cisco's WiFi implementation.  The trick is to disable your AP's setting for "WiFi key rotation".  I'm not sure how to go about this on non-Cisco APs since it tends to be one of the more esoteric settings available, and consumer-level APs typically don't allow meddling in such minutia.
Anyway, this isn't about your WPA passcode, but the broadcast key that the AP assigns internally to your associated devices' sessions. The CIsco APs, by default, will rotate the WiFi key based on time, and also when a new device associates to the AP.  Mac OS/iOS, for some reason, ignore the first key rotation packet, don't pick up the new key, and therefore need to be re-associated as you described, usually by disabling and re-enabling the wireless NIC.
Search for "wpa2 wifi key rotation" for more info.  IIRC, this only happens with WPA2 and AES.  If you have the option to use WPA2 and TKIP, that should be a good workaround if this isn't a high-security network.

On a Cisco AP, you configure it per-radio in Security -> Encryption Manager -> Global Properties

  • How do i restore my wifi setting back to the factory settings? I have changed it somehow :/ and now my wifi will not connect. My Airport is on and showing full strength but will not connect.

How do i restore my wifi setting back to the factory settings? I have changed it somehow :/ and now my wifi will not connect. My Airport is on and showing full strength but will not connect.

Ok, if other devices are connecting but just not your MacBook then let's start troubleshooting the MacBook to possibly find out why.
Please try each of the following, in order, until hopefully resolved:
Note the following are excerpts from an OS X Daily article.
    * Turn Airport on & off – You can do this via the Airport menu bar or from the Network Preferences. This is the first thing you should try when troubleshooting Mac wireless problems.
    * Make sure Wireless/Airport card software & firmware is up to date – This is usually done just by going to the Software Update menu, if there are any updates available for your Mac or Airport, install them.
    * Delete and recreate connection – Try deleting and recreating/reestablishing the wireless connection, sometimes a setting can be corrupted and this may fix it.
    * Create a new Network Location – Similar to the above suggestion, try creating a new and different wireless network location to see if it resolves the connection problems.
    * Change DHCP auto settings to manual – sometimes there is a problem with the DHCP server, and if you manually set an IP address on the network you can be fine. Remember to set the IP to a high number so it wouldn’t interfere with other DHCP machines. As long as you have the subnet mask, router, and DNS settings configured manually as well, this shouldn’t be a problem.
    * Flush the DNS cache – Launch the Terminal and enter the following command onto one full line within the Terminal: dscacheutil -flushcache
    * Zap the PRAM – Reboot your Mac and hold Command+Option+P+R during restart until you hear another chime, let the Mac boot as usual.
    * Delete Wireless Config files – Delete com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist and com.apple.internetconfig.plist files from ~/Library/Preferences and reboot
    * Trash your home directories SystemConfiguration – Remove all files within ~/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ and then reboot your Mac.
    * Reset your Mac’s System Management Controller (SMC) – For MacBook and MacBook Pro’s: Shutdown the MacBook/Pro, remove the battery, disconnect the power, hold the Power Key for 15 seconds. Replace the battery, reconnect power, and zap the PRAM and wait for 2 chimes before letting the keys go. Let boot as usual.

  • G5 start up problem: stuck at grey screen with fans running full strength

hi, i'm new to discussions, so i hope this question and my technical knowledge and descriptions will be OK: problem: G5 20" stuck at grey screen with fans running full strength..
so far i've tried but did not work:
    - power off by pressing the button for 5 secs,
    - checked all cables connections etc, take out the power cable try again, etc.
    - removed all USB connections, re-did
    - tried to use it as 'target drive' connected to my macbook by firewire
    - tried to start up and keeping C key pressed
    - tried to start up with 'shift' key pressed
    - tried to start up with command, options, P and R keys pressed,
    - i had an additional RAM, i've taken it out and tried again, no luck
    - i've put in Mac OS X install disc1, no luck, and now disc is inside my iMac, can't take it out
    any recommendations? thank you!

    Scroto,
You may not actually have a bad processor. On the Dual G5's it's not uncommon after a few years for dust and corrosion to build up between the processors and their sockets. You can fairly easily remove the processors and clean the connections yourself if you're at all handy. Basically, snap off the heatsink covers, loosen a few screws and the processor and heatsink come out as a unit.
Clean the contacts on the processors (carefully). And clean the sockets. Be sure to put the same processor in the same place or you'll have issues.
I used 90% isopropol alcohol to clean mine last year. Let it air dry and blew both the socket and the cpu off after with canned air. That done, I reinstalled the processors, buckled everything up and no more "bad" processor... The machine worked perfectly from then on and I assume it still does today. Don't know, someone stole it last month:(...

  • Snow base station next to imac - yet not getting full strength reception?

I have my snow base station sitting about 1 foot from my imac, yet only 3 out of the four bars are dark. Meaning I'm not getting full reception? Why is this is? I can't say I notice a significant difference in internet usage, but every little bit helps. I only have a cordless 5.8 ghz phone and my Harmon Kardon soundsticks speakers on the same desk. But from what I understand, 5.8 ghz are not supposed to interfere with cordless internet.
    Any suggestions?

Duane, I've tried every channel and no improvement. The only thing I have discovered is if I hold the base station in my hand and lift it up above my head - I get full signal strength. However, if I hold it up and place it against the wall (as though I were to hang it), it drops back down to three bars.
Do you think if I got the newest airport express, my signal strength would be better? Or do you think a more insulated ethernet cable would help? Or could it be my imac airport card?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Lost Internet but have full strength

We left for vacation and upon returning I cannot connect to the web. Nothing has changed and this setup has been working for over a year. I do have internet coming into the house because my VoIP phone is working.
Comcast Cable into house to Router >
Ethernet from Router to Airport Extreme >
Ethernet from Airport Extreme over to VoIP box to phone
I am getting four full bars on my signal strength, but do not have internet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

It sounds like the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) is not "passing thru" the DHCP-provided IP address(es) from your other router. I assume, based on your network configuration, that the AEBSn is configured as a bridge ... correct?
If so, I suggest that you perform a hard reset on the AEBSn and reconfigure it to see if this solves the problem.

  • Can't connect to web despite full-strength connection on wifi

Alright, I've scowered the internet and read several other topics, but none of the suggestions presented there helped fix my problem, so I'm throwing this at the support discussions. Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions/advice!
My wife and I live in an apartment building that provides wifi for the entire building. It's password protected, and about every 24 hours, you'll get a splash page (I don't know if that's the proper term) where you have to scroll through the building's terms & conditions and click "I Agree" before you can continue surfing. We had absolutely no problems with this setup for 9 months, then suddenly we lost all connection in our unit about 10 days ago. Between my wife and I, we have a Macbook Pro, iMac, Windows 7 laptop, 2 iPhones, iPod touch, and iPad mini, and none of these devices could connect. Unfortunately, the router and modem for our building's connection is located in another renter's unit, so I can't just reset them whenever I want. However, we did have them try this several times, but it didn't help. I even asked them to rotate the antennas on the wifi router, to see if somehow they got bumped and our unit became a dead-spot. Unfortunately this didn't work either. I even purchased a brand-new iPad mini and it never connected, right out of the box.
If I wander the halls of our building, I am able to get online in Safari and browse the internet on both the Macbook Pro and the iOS devices. However, once I go back into my apartment, I get the message that I am no longer connected to the internet, despite having the full signal at the top of my screen. Then, for no apparent reason two days ago, our Windows 7 laptop regained connection in our unit, and has consistantly worked since then. Just today, I renewed the DHCP lease on the iMac, and it has been connected for several hours. Occasionally, the Macbook Pro will connect in our apartment until, but the connection literally lasts for about 60 seconds before it goes back into the "You're not connected to the internet" mode. I've tried renewing the DHCP lease on the Macbook Pro as well as the iOS devices, but it doesn't seem to do anything.
Here's what my wifi connection page on the Macbook Pro looked like yesterday when I was in my apartment and I didn't have internet connection, despite the fact it said I was connected:
and then here's the MacBook Pro's wifi connection page looks like when I am out in the hallway and able to connect to pages on Safari:
Lastly, (I don't know if this is helpful or not) but here's the connection page on the iMac, when it is working...taken at the same time as when the Macbook Pro was connected when I was out in the hallway:
    A couple of thoughts:
Does the iMac have a larger wifi range than the other devices? It seems that in the past, I've been able to see/connect to more wifi networks on my iMac than I have on my Macbook or iOS devices. Could it just be that the Windows laptop and the iMac are able to reach our network, while the iOS devices are having a hard time for some reason? Particularly odd that all devices worked for 9 months then suddenly stopped.
I'm asking the apartment manager if they she contact our local cable company about replacing the modem and/or wireless router. Given that I've never seen these (they're in someone else's unit) I have no idea how old they are, or if they need firmware updates.
Do you think this is a problem with the wifi network (range/dead spots), the router/modem hardware, or a problem with my computer/devices?
I'd love to get all my devices connected again (seriously, they all worked for 9 months before stopping suddenly), but I'm kind of working on the MacBook Pro first, and then will try and get the other things sorted out.
    Thanks for your help!
-J- (writing from the hallway of my apartment complex!)

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
Ask whoever is in charge of the router to restart it. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 2
    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 3
The administrator may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Step 4
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.

    Try rebooting your modem.
Unplug both your modem and your wireless router.
Plug modem back in and wait a good 3 minutes for modem to  completely boot up.
Then plug your wireless router back in and wait another 2 minute for that to boot up.
Then turn iPad off and back on.
Make sure you and you wife are on the same network
    Hope it works.

  • HT5622 I just got a new iPhone 5.  I am trying to get my apps from my iPhone 4 through the App Store I am receiving an error saying "ConnectionManager::invoke:: Failed to find service connection URL."  I am showing full strength  on my wifi signal.  What

Help I keep getting a connection error for App Store and iTunes on my new iPhone 5 but not for game enter?  What should I do?

From what I'm seeing, looks like it's being fixed even as we speak.  My recommendation is to wait an hour or so and check again.  Inconvenient, but that's probably the best option.

  • Packet loss, full strength connection

So, just recently I have found that my connection to webpages times out. In firefox i will get the can't connect to site page, then i press try again and usually it works. When I use terminal and ping www.apple.com for example i will get ping times of 900ms and then maybe 80ms, after 15 pings i will get a report saying i have packet loss between 15 and 25%. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening? It's totally out of the blue. I'm using a D-link DIR-625 wireless N router. I've never had these problems before. My Windows pc that is connected wirelessly to the router has no problems connecting to any pages.

May be a bit late, but I have found this tool to be helpful with diagnosing my wireless network faults :
    AP Grapher - http://www.chimoosoft.com/
I have all sorts of problems with my wireless. Even things like someone opening the sliding door can cause my network to drop out. If as you say this is a recent problem, have you recently purchased cordless phones? Well check the tool and see if there is any noise coming across on the signal and try and work back from there.

  • Unable to access internet - signal at full strength

I'm not sure what's happening here. My iphones been working fine for the past few days but for the last couple hours I keep getting error messages while trying to access the internet.
In safari I get a "Safari can't open the page because it could not connect to the server" message. In Mail I get a message saying "Cannot get mail. The connection to the server imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com failed."
My EDGE connection shows 5 bars and I've tried from several locations (Work (before I left), home and about 10 miles away (on the way home)).
Anybody know what might be causing this or if the edge network might just be down in my area?

This happened to me too. The solution was to turn off wi-fi and use edge. I hope my wifi network at home will work after I talk to their cs.
