Full System Restore with Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD

I'm trying to do a full system restore to go from OS 10.6.4 back to 10.6.3, can I do the full restore with the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD, or do I need the original Installation DVD that came with my computer?
Thanks.

Hi,
have a look at Pondinis Time Machine FAQ here http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/14.html

  • Reinstalling using the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD?

This may be a stupid question, but I need to reinstall my Mac, however I only have the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD that was shipped to me since I the leopard dvd is stuffed somewhere in the back cupboard that I can't find for love nor money.
Can I erase the hard drive and perform a clean installation from the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD? I've a feeling that I can't but just wanted to confirm.
    Thanks!

    Hi thelongmile;
If it is the upgrade DVD then you can't.

  • Loud rattling noise in drive with snow leopard upgrade disc

I attempted to upgrade my mac mini intel core duo (2.0 gHz with 3 GB) with the new snow leopard upgrade disc; it makes a horrendous nopise in the drive not unlike a leafblower, and an error message finally appears with CANNOT READ DISC. Every other media disc works fine in the drive; whether CD ROM or DVD. It works fine in my MacBook (Black from 2007). Any ideas on how to do this install? Apple checked the disc and they say it's fine.
    Thanx

  • Attempting Disk repair with Snow Leopard install DVD. Prompted to restart several times

    Hi,
I'm trying to do a disk repair with my MBP (2010, OS X snow leopard). I tried  to enter Disk Utility with my Snow Leopard install DVD by pressing down "c" during startup but it gives me a grey screen in several languages prompting me to restart again. Restarted and I get the same screen.  Can anyone help me?

You are getting a (kernel) panic crash booting from the installer dvd?  Hmmm.  That's doesn't sound good.  Try resetting smc and pram.
If that doesn't fix it try to boot the Apple Hardware Test and check your machine -- assuming that will boot?
Also look inside if you get that panic crash and see if there are any diagnostic leds lit.
If this continues you might try disconnecting all unnecessary peripherals (usb, fw, extra drives).

  • Mac keep shutting down after cancelling Snow Leopard upgrade DVD

    Hello,
I tried to upgrade my computer with the Mac OS X Snow Leopard DVD. The upgrade failed twice, so I decided to quit it and to restart my computer with hardware, but then, it doesn't run more than 35 sec and then shuts down automatically. I have tried 5 times to restart it, but it shuts down even before I can see my desktop. Ho yes, and I ejected the DVD from it.
    ...help please! : )
    Thank you!

Sounds like you've damaged your system by forcing it to quit and restart in the middle of installing. You probably also had something wrong with your machine that was interfering with the installation in the first place, as the Snow Leopard installer is ordinarily pretty good at failing without damaging anything if something causes it to fail.
I would advise [repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417]. If that fails, you'll need to erase and repartition the hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard from scratch. If repair works, but you still can't boot, you probably have corruption in important system files. You could try installing Snow Leopard over it at this point, while booted from the Snow Leopard disk. If repair shows no problems, post back here, as you've got something a little more exotic than simple hard disk damage going on.
Do you have a backup? If not, it's possible all your data might be gone at this point, depending on what exactly has gone wrong with your computer. You can try to back up from Disk Utility running from the Mac OS X install disk... see the Restore tab. You'll need an external hard drive to which to copy.

  • Lost custom pronunciations in VoiceOver with Snow Leopard upgrade

I had been using VoiceOver under Leopard to read documents aloud. I had set up a large dictionary of custom pronunciations. However, when I upgraded to Snow Leopard (yesterday), those custom pronunciations are no longer in the VoiceOver Utility list of pronunciations. I can't find where they might have been stored. Is there any way I can retrieve those custom pronunciations either from the current system or from a Time Machine backup?

OK, I found my custom pronunciations were saved in ~/Library/Preferences in a file called com.apple.VoiceOver.pronunciations.plist. However, in Snow Leopard, there is a new version of VoiceOver (3.0.1). It does not seem to inherit preferences from the previous version. And in fact, it keeps its pronunciations in ~/Library/Preferences/com.Apple.VoiceOver3, in a file called custom.pronunciation.plist. I'm not an expert at parsing plists, but looking at the text in the plists, it seems the new plist is in a slightly different format from the old one—they don't seem compatible with each other; they don't even maintain the same name. Plus, while VoiceOver3 has a menu item to Import Preferences, it doesn't seem capable of importing any plist file—all files are grayed out.
So while I now have found my custom pronunciations in a plist, I can't figure out a way to import them into the current version of the software, other than input them by hand one at a time. Does anyone know a better way?

  • Icon issues with Snow Leopard upgrade

Overall, my recent Snow Leopard (10.6.8) upgrade on my MacPro went well. I have one strange quirk, hopefully someone else has experienced and can help with. It has to do with the icon for an Illustrator .EPS file showing up incorrectly.
Specifically: In folders with Illustrator EPS files that were created BEFORE the upgrade, the icon shows up incorrectly. (a default looking icon.)  To make it even more weird, if I go to "View Options", and uncheck "show icon preview", the icon show up correctly.
In folders with Illustrator EPS files created AFTER the upgrade, the icons show up correctly. However, in View Options, the "show icon preview" box is unchecked!
So, I'm getting the opposite result from the View Options menu.
Anybody know what's going on here?

The old EPS files did not have an icon preview with them, so they use the default icon. The newer files have an icon preview that is being shown when "show icon preview" is enabled.
If you don't need the icon previews, turn them off in the view options, and check use as defaults. Your computer will run faster, especially on folders with lots of files.
You can also do a CMD I on any .eps file, and change the applicaiton these "open with" when double clicking, that would also change your default icon.

  • Problem with Snow Leopard upgrade

Just upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and can't open anything.  Application freezes up and I get the whirly color wheel

Do you know any solution for an iMac9,1 OS X intel core 2 duo, 2.66Ghz? After updates installed for my Snow Leopard which I bought with disc a lot of problems started with it. Sorry I don't know were to post these. This is the nearest I think I got to. • Photos and Music on external HD do not synch with Snow Leopard upgrade.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard several months ago.  I keep my music and photos on an external HD (WD My Passport).  Since the upgrade most of my music does not synch and Faces.  Can someone help me resolve this?  My family has 4 iPods that I can't fully synch and I can't organize any of my nearly 9000 photos into Faces categories (one of the main reasons I bought Aperture).
The error message I get on a large amount of my songs on iTunes when I try to play them from my library is "The Song XXX cannot be used because the original file could not be found.  Would you like to locate it?"  It will occur to entire albums or only on a few songs within an album".  Several of my Apps do not synch as well.
When I try to assign Faces in Aperture, normally after you enter the same name on a handful of photos it will start to 'recognize' the face and ask if the photo is "xxx".  No matter how many times I enter a name, it fails to recognize the face within the album or in other albums.  Entering thousands of names by hand, rather than clicking "Confirm" is rather cumbersome.
Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.  I have been to the Genius bar several times and after more than 5 hours still have no resolution.
    Thank you very much.

As a sidenote; be aware that you will need to update or even upgrade some of your third-party software, Adobe especially, and you will need to ensure you install Rosetta (additional installations) if you're still using Appleworks or other PPC applications. SL doesn't support Classic.
Peripherals like scanners and printers will almost certainly need updated drivers, if they're available. Many manufacturers won't support kit that's more than 3 years old.

  • Lost sound with Snow Leopard upgrade?

Just upgraded from Leopard and have no sound, (except the opening chime). Did a search on the discussions and couldn't seems to find anything similar. Have QT 7.6.6 Pro but downloaded the SL version anyway just in case. Cables/sound system check out fine. I searched the KB's but no joy there. Maybe I'm missing something, (obviously). Don't even get sound through QTX. Help please.
    Cheers

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Try Epson's driver: epson13615.dmg. I'd post the URL, but it's amazingly long. You can find it on Epson's Web site (http://www.epson.com). Start at this URL
    <http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid =132634&infoType=Overview>
click on "Macintosh" under "Drivers & Downloads", then look for "Drivers and Utilities Combo Package".

  • How to install a clean install with leopard upgrade DVD!

Does somebody know how to do an clean install with a Leopard upgrade DVD?
I bought my MacBook for 1 week ago, and them said that i would get leopard sent later. And when i get it, its a upgrade cd that i cant install only leopard on my ny frsh hard-drive. *** apple?

First, there is no such thing as a "clean install" option in OS X. But the "cleanest" install is to start with a reformatted drive (using Disk Utility's "Partition" tab), followed by an install of the OS that will be cleansed of any traces of OS or file system corruption. (The "unclean" options, "Upgrade" & "Archive & Install" won't be possible, & the erase part of "Erase & Install" is at this point redundant.)
However, if you use Setup Assistant (which runs after rebooting) or Migration Assistant to bring over copies of old system components, applications, & settings, you may be reintroducing something "unclean" from the old versions.
This said, if your up-to-date disk is just an updater (nobody seems to know yet), you can do a "cleanest possible" install by following the above with your original Tiger Installer disk, letting it reboot & not importing anything during setup, & then following the instructions supplied with the up-to-date disk to upgrade. At this point, you may want to clone the startup disk for future reference, before adding back in your apps & user files by whatever method(s) you chose.

  • Had to restore my Mac Book with Snow Leopard. My i Life disc appears to be damaged, and I can't restore my iPhoto application. I have searched for downloads but all appear to be upgrades. Any ideas on how to restore iphotos

Given what you describe you will have to upgrade Snow Leopard by downloading and installing Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. Then go to the App Store and sign in with your Apple ID. Purchase and download Mountain Lion to upgrade your OS. Then purchase the latest upgrades for the iLife applications which includes iPhoto.
Or you can go on eBay, Google, or Amazon and purchase another copy of the DVD based iLife.

  • I have just upgraded to Mavericks and have been using Time Machine on an external disk with Snow Leopard.  Can I continue to backup with Time Machine on the same external disk or do I need a new disk since the operating system has changed?

I have just upgraded to Mavericks and have been using Time Machine on an external disk with Snow Leopard.  Can I continue to backup with Time Machine on the same external disk or do I need a new disk since the operating system has changed?

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.

My macbook came with snow leopard, if  I upgrade to Lion will I be able to use my restore disks in the future and if I do use my disks that brings me back to snow leopard, Will itunes remember I purchased Lion or will I have to purchase a second time ?

At this point, you can no longer download Lion (10.7) from the App Store, only Mountain Lion (10.8) - make sure all your applications are fully compatible if you decide to upgrade.
Yes, you can restore 10.6 using your restore disc should you wish to - and the App Store (not ITunes) will have a record of all your purchases, since it's linked to your AppleId.
