Full Time Machine reload in Yosemite 10.10.1?
I would like to know how I can do a complete re-load from Time Machine in Yosemite 10.10.1
I was able to do it in previous versions of OS X
Any instructions would be appreciated.
Boot into the Recovery partition (command - R on a restart).

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting. -
Time Machine After Installing Yosemite
Very frustrated here. After I updated my Mid 2010 iMac to Yosemite, I'm having issues with Time Machine. I have an external WD 2 TB drive connected via USB. The first time I tried to back up, I got this message: 'Time Machine completed a verification of your backups on "name here". To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you. Click Start New Backup to create a new backup. This will remove your existing backup history. This could take several hours...'
So, I did. It took something like 18 hours to complete, but it did. Now, my iMac attempted to do it's hourly backup and I get the SAME message. I am NOT going to do another complete backup of my 1TB hard drive. Anyone else experience this VERY SERIOUS issue? Anyone have any ideas?See if the info in this webpage can help: TM is doing a full backup for no good reason

Time machine backups disappear Yosemite
Since upgrading (that is a joke) from ML to Yosemite I am seeing backups on time machine disappear from my back up drive. Another oddity is that the icon does not spin around while backing up. Any help would be appreciated.
The Time Machine icon stopped spinning when Mavericks was released in the Fall of 2013. Instead, since that time, there is a bit more of a separation in the lower left area of the circle (near the arrowhead) when the backup is occurring. Further, the arrow turns into a double arrow.
Backups may well disappear as the disk housing the Time Machine backups becomes full.

Time machine issue after Yosemite install
After performing a clean install of Yosemite and migration from my TimeMachine backup I experienced the following:
I opened iTunes and selected some music to play, then got a dialog box saying the files could not be found. Spotlight couldn't find them either... they were just gone. Naturally I went to my Time Machine backups and was surprised the music was gone from the backups, all the way back to the first backup. Very wierd. During the migration I went through the "Cleaning up old backups" process, not sure exactly what this process is.
I was pretty bummed that I had permanently lost a lot of music, some was recordings of friends playing live that could never be replaced. I then remembered that some time ago, just for the **** of it, I copied my sparsebundle backups to an external drive and stashed it in a drawer. I browsed it, and lo and behold there were the missing files. So I narrowly escaped a big problem, but wy did this happen? What are they doing over at Apple?Hatrabbit wrote:

This is really bad luck. And what can be seen here, it is not related to Yosemite but Mavericks, since I asume your backups were made with Mavericks. Though, it is possible that this bug still persists with Yosemite.
I have a similar problem. I am still on Mavericks. I see missing files in ~/Library/Preferences on a regular basis. When I come aware of it, I fix it manually by excluding Preferences folder from backup, run backup, include folder Preferences and finally backup again. But this fix does not last for long. Suddenly after some weeks I see a again missing files in that folder, when browsing the "Latest" backup.
I have found some related discussion:

missing mail after installation
No solution until today. Very frustrating.
My feeling is, that many users do not recognize, that they are victim of this horrible bug, cause in most cases only few folders are hit by this bug.
And now since Yosemite is out, people are actually using there backups for the first time since Mavericks and run into a disaster.
Atm I am trying to test, if maybe fsevent daemon is the problem, in the past there have been issues like http://openradar.appspot.com/10207999
I did a check on my drive, and I found issues with realpath()/readdir(). Though, those issues may just be old and have not been detected by me for a very long time. My MBP is 5 years old and I upgraded all the way from 10.5 to 10.6 to 10.9.
With 10.6 I never had such an issue.
But more likely, the issue is related to the "Cleaning up old backups" process. Cause I also have the feeling, that when my backup drive gets full and the shrink process took place, then the result are missing files in younger backups then the ones cleaned. If that is true, then maybe the hard-link-approach of Time Machine is somehow involved. -
Time machine problems in Yosemite
I have issues trying to recover files further back than a few days. When i try the time machine just hangs for ages and don't do anything. I have also found that the links to other folders in the side bar also do not work. Is it just my machine or do others have the same problem. Your help in this matter is appreciated as i rely on this backup method to protect all my document and photos. Thank you in advance
First, I went to the Airport Utility to see if there were any error messages for my Time Capsule. It's firmware needed to be updated. I did so. That did not resolve the issue. I then tried to access backed up files using an alternate backup drive I use (i.e. not the Time Capsule). Same problem occurred using it. That suggested to me that it is not a hardware problem (the two different disks used for backups...which both worked fine before Yosemite).
Then I thought it might be a "slowness" issue. I went into Time Machine and picked a date about halfway between today and my oldest backup. It showed "waiting" for about five minutes and then it went to that date in time. The problem occurs when I go to pick a folder (like Documents). Nothing happens. Single click. Double click. Clicking and then waiting for an hour just in case it is super slow. Nothing.
I've got to believe it is a Yosemite issue (just like the other handful of problems I have experienced with Yosemite...Java problems, etc.). -
HT4718 Using Time Machine after installing Yosemite
I did a clean install of Yosemite, by erasing my hard drive and installing Yosemite from a flash drive. Yosemite started fine, but I can't access my Time Machine backup on my NAS. I can see my backup file with Finder. How can I use it?
I have a mid 2011 iMac. 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5, 16 GB RAM, I am running Yosemite (OS X 10.10.1). I am using a Diskstation 412+ for my NAS, with a dedicated Time Machine folder, which has the backups for all of my Apple computers.TimeA third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want. I know Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.) -
Time machine crashes after Yosemite upgrade
I recently upgraded to Yosemite 10.2.2. on a mid-2010 MacBook, but am having problems backing up using TimeMachine.
I can access my past backups, which is good news, although I need to select one of the disks being backed up in the left column of the finder window (if I just select my username it doesn't seem to work). However, when I attempt a backup the computer crashes during the beginning of the backup process ("Processing backup"). I don't get any particular error message when Time Machine crashes, the computer just restarts and sometimes I will get an error message once the computer has finished restarting indicating that the computer restarted because of a problem.
I back up onto a non-Apple (Seagate) connected to the WiFi network drive, which has been working well for about 6 months under the previous OS.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I've run the disk utility to repair disk permissions, removed the network disk as backup then re-added.And here is the Problem Details and System Configuration in case its helpful:

Can't access Time Machine backups on Yosemite
Hi guys
I'm having some trouble with TIme machine. I did a clean install on my mac. Upgraded it to Yosemite. I could then access my backed up files (although Apple hides most of it for any reason). As soon as I chose the same external hard drive to again be my Time Machine backup drive, all the older backups got unaccessible. When I open Time Machine I can see my older backups but they won't show any files. If I manually look for them in Finder I am locked out.
Is there any way to tell OS X to please let me have my files back? While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
If you need to restore from a backup of the hidden user Library folder, first select a snapshot, then press shift-command-G. A Go to Folder dialog will open. In it, you'll enter the path to the folder. The dialog will help you by automatically completing the parts of the path when you start to type them.
The path begins with slash character ("/"). Enter that. The rest of the parts will be separated by slashes.
The next part is the date and time of the current snapshot. Enter a "2", and the rest of the date should be filled in automatically. Press the right-arrow key to jump to the end of the path. Enter a slash to start the next part.
Next is the name of the volume (usually "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it a different name.) Start to type that, then jump to the end and enter a slash.
The next part is "Users", followed by a slash.
Next is your (short) user name, which is also the name of your home folder.
Finally, enter "Library", then press return. You should now be in the Library folder. From there you can get around as in the Finder. -
Can Time Machine reload an older system ?
Yeah, like I have been using Mt.Lion (10.8.5) for a long time on my Late 2012 iMac (13,1)
I want to try Yosemite so I can get a nice free Logic Pro X upgrade for my music.
If I make the plunge and go for Yosemite and it does not work out….
Can I revert back to Mt. Lion using Time Machine backups ???
Can time machine do that ??
ThanksHey TTabby,
You can revert to a previous version of OS X by following the steps in the article below. Look it over in case you need to go back like you are suggesting

Mavericks Time Machine Backup in Yosemite?
They say there are two kinds of people in the world. Those who backup and those who wish they did. I am the backup person, but when I did a clean install of Yosemite on my HD for a number of reasons, I cannot find my iphoto files (1000s of pictures). And I can't seem to utilize Time Machine at all. I have been able to manually drag files (music, documents, etc.) from the backup folder on the disk to the new system. But nowhere are my iphoto pictures....
So, where do I get the iPhoto files so I don't lose all my pictures? Is there a way to access a Mavericks Time Machine in Yosemite? Any help would be appreciated.
rogWhile in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C.
How does one find Mac Mail mailbox in full Time Machine Backup?
I completed full backup of my MacBook on 9/24. I use a directly connected G Drive. I need to restore my mailbox from that backup, but it doesn't show up when I attempt to use Time Machine to do so. How can I find the mail box through Finder on the G Drive?
Thanks,
Chris ReidFurther to this issue: I go into the finder and locate my mailbox in Library. When I go to back up 'Library' it goes back to the date in question - but there is no Library found?! There really must be a problem with the backup process. Any thoughts? I really need to find these emails!
Thanks,

Time machine broken in Yosemite
When I enter Time Machine, I can scroll back in time, but if I click on a folder or file, the screen blinks and move to the previous day. I can't select any folders or files. It used to work fine before I upgraded to Yosemite.
I've tried verifying the Time Machine Disk, turning Time Machine on/off, rebooting, etc. It's very rare that I need to use Time Machine, but I really need to access a file from two weeks ago, and I cannot. If I navigate to the backup using Finder, everything is there - it's just the Time Machine UI that doesn't work.Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
Installed Yosemite on iMac desktop. Made sure I backed up and disconnected external hard drive. Yosemite deleted a printer/scanner application. Went into Time Machine to restore it and it was gone. When external hd was remounted Yosemite went into it, probably to index, and deleted the application from all backups. Wonder what else is missing?? Besides being unbelievably SLOW now I have to see what else has been lost.
Can you simply navigate to your Time Machine backup with the Finder? Treat it like an external hardrive and just look for your old Applications folder. /Applications/
Also, quite a few apps put config and support files in ~/Library/Application\ Support/
So you may be able to get the files from there as well.
