Full use of available RAM capacity

A screen shot on my activity monitor gives more than 300 Mo available memory out of existing 768 Mo
Looking at CPU usage pattern when internet and wifi connection are on, looks like there is a saturation while browsing between pages takes ages/time
Does someone know if there is a link in there or a way to a better use of RAM ?
I am connected to internet via a USB dongle at 54 Mbps

OS X is good at allocating memory to it's best effect.http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342?viewlocale=en_US
Regardless of whether I'm on my Powerbook with 1GB RAM or MBP with 8GB the 'free' memory is low (although it may not be in actual use).
On these older Macs limiting the number of browser tabs/windows is a good idea. Also Adobe Flash is heavily resourse intensive. It's worth installing "Click to Flash" which prevents those animated adverts autoloading.

Also for YouTube try joining the HTML5 version which again is much less draining for the iMac:

  • Get c: drive and ram full used

After Anna Upgrade, and after fresh boot, the available RAM in my N8 reduces from 136Mb to 120Mb.  I really believe more RAM in Nokia phone is the ultimate necessity to operate the phone smoothly without hanging during playing.  Can I have the RAM back?
Similarly, c: drive space drop a lot after installing necessary system apps, for example, QT, few themes, Ovi Maps (3.6), etc, from 130Mb down to 80Mb.  I really want to save some for caching, any coming important system app, buffer for photo-taking and video recording, etc, and really uncomfortable with no space left in c: drive in my working experience with symbian.
Pls help to recover some valuable c: space and RAM.

Make sure you install themes to mass memory or memory card, many apps install to C: unknown to the user, go into application manager and uninstall apps that are installed into C:, also go into file manager select the phone memory details and see where most of the memory is, might be sms msgs, if u have many, i realised mine was over 30 mb some time ago, i had to sync all to pc and delete most of em
    Nothing is as it seems

  • Photoshop CS5.5 + Lion: Available RAM Actual RAM

    Hi all,
    Here's my issue:
I have 24 GIGs of RAM in my machine [Mac Pro 3,1— 2.8Ghz "octo-core" (early-2008)].  I noticed recently that Photoshop was only showing 18 GIGs as available ("18544 MB" is how it's displayed in the "Performance" section of my PS Preferences)—rather than the full 24 GIGs.
I'm not positive that it is a function of my "upgrade" to Lion, but I have a strong suspicion that it is, since I am intimately familiar with my Photoshop preference settings and never noticed this issue prior to switching from Snow Leopard.
All my Adobe apps are up to date—as is my system software.  I have confirmed (via System Profiler) that my system is indeed recognizing all 24 GIGs of installed RAM.  I have had this much RAM in my machine for a long time, and under Snow Leopard, it was all recognized by Photoshop.
    Questions:
    - has anyone else experienced this?
    - is it a bug of some sort, or a purposeful function of the OS (i.e. does Lion sequester a portion of the RAM or otherwise disallow PS to access all of it)?
Any input would be much appreciated.

So far we haven't seen any such difference on Lion.
    This should help then...
I realized I had a hard drive with OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) still on it, so I booted up my Mac Pro using that drive, opened CS5 and took a look at the preferences.
Sure enough, the "Available RAM" readout is within 1 GB of the total RAM in my machine (24 GB)—which is consistent with my recollection.  I took a screen-cap of the prefs (seen on the left side of the attached image), rebooted using my current system (Lion), and fired up Photoshop CS5.5.
If you take a look at the right side of the attached image, you'll notice two things:
Right off the bat, the Available RAM in Lion is ~3 GB less than on the Snow Leopard system
The Available RAM fluctuates over time in Lion—mostly decreasing, and at one point, moving back up slightly.
I didn't spend any time in Snow Leopard to test whether the Available RAM fluctuated or not.  My recollection is that it did not—and that's based upon many months of using CS5 in Snow Leopard.  If it did fluctuate, it wasn't enough to ever catch my eye.  The fluctuation did catch my eye in Lion because of the larger and more relevant issue—the drastic decrease to the actual value(s) of Available RAM.
Losing 3 GB of RAM on a 24GB system might seem insignificant at first glance, but it's not, and here's why:
it grows to a loss of ~6GB almost immediately.
I lose another ~6GB for setting the RAM % no higher than 69% (recommended to avoid a reported memory bug)
When I spend $2,500 on software (or $10, for that matter), I have every right to expect that it won't negate several hundred dollars worth of investment into the hardware I bought to use it, unless it is advertised as such.
Wade's suggestion (faulty or incorrectly-seated RAM) crossed my mind too—even though System Profiler recognized all 24 GB with a status of "OK."  Now, it's clear that this isn't the issue.  It's also (hopefully) clear that this is a real issue, with real implications.
I have invested a lot of time, energy and money into building a high-powered system for one primary purpose—maximizing my computing power for Photoshop and Illustrator.  I have done that based upon the official documentation and recommendations of Adobe.  I run the OS and CS5.5 from a high-quality SSD, have a large, fast and dedicated scratch drive, and save my files to yet another drive.  I've been using Photoshop for 16 years, and as you may note from the scarcity of my posts, I come to this forum only as a last resort—not to waste your time or mine on frivolous issues, or to waste your time asking for explanations about issues that I can otherwise resolve on my own.
If there is an avenue other than this forum by which I can more easily achieve resolution to issues like this—by all means, please tell me where that is so I can save us all some time.  If not, then to the extent that I must come here to resolve those issues—please respect the fact that I would much rather be using the product for which I paid good money than documenting its flaws or trying to convince the company that sold it to me to listen.
Please forgive me if I sound frustrated—I am.  It's nearly 4am; I've lost a full night's work reporting this issue; and I've lost far too many additional days and nights over the last year experiencing, troubleshooting, documenting and discussing defects and quirks in CS5 (/.5)—often while feeling like I was the one on trial instead of the buggy product that I purchased.  I don't expect perfection with such robust and technical software—but I think it's reasonable to expect a supportive and attentive attitude, as well as a serious effort by the developers to fix the bugs and correct the oversights that I and others identify.
Thanks for your time.  I'm sure I'll be more cheerful on the other side of this long night.

  • Os X says the harddrive is full 0 k available!

I have a major problem with my G5, it says that the harddrive is full and 0k available, there was 30 gb available and then I installed some upgrades (nothing close to 30 gb maybe 1 gb or so. I have thrown away a bunch of stuff and it still says 0 available. Diskwarrior will not run and the utilities program just ticks forever when checking the harddrive.
I can't copy to any of my other drives (can't pull folders to copy).
When I try to compress with filevault it goes forever and it is never done.
When use I show info on the harddrive it is the 149 gb capacity so the drive shows the right capacity.
    What should I do?

FileVault is the absolute wrong answer. It probably needs more disk space temporarily and if it crashes, you probably will not recover anything useful.
Your best bet is to boot into the target disk mode and use another computer to copy or clone your HD onto another large external drive before you do lose everything.
Freespace on a drive varies as apps use temporary filespace, etc. Caches, and such, while hidden also take up space, as well as many other hidden system files.

  • My Macbook pro Mid 2012 Model Seems to be using too much RAM

Hello everybody, I recenlty bought a Macbook pro Mid 2012 Model and I absolutely fell in love with it! I use it everyday for school, work, and for my musical hobby.
I haven't had a single problem with it until recently, and it seems like the RAM memory is being all used up without me even running programs. This problem barely started rougly 2-3 weeks ago and it's becoming annoying. I do plan to upgrade the ram soon seeing as the extra RAM will help run my engineering software I'm going to be using.
Anywho I'm just looking for tips, suggestions or answers as to why this problem is occuring. Also heard from a fellow employee that Google Chrome can cause this problem with RAM and battery life as well.

Stop using Chrome for any number of reasons and stick to Safari. An aspect of OS X memory management is to take over as much memory as possible in order to better manage the memory, however, this does not mean you are running out of memory. You only run out of memory when you try to run too many applications concurrently given the amount of RAM you have. You will know when that happens because the computer will slow down, you will see the beachball a lot, everything you do takes forever, and the hard drive will be grinding away.
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
OS X Mavericks- About Activity Monitor
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Is there a maximum RAM capacity for a Macbook Pro 13 inch Mid 2009?

My questions is essentially, is there a maximum RAM capacity for a Macbook Pro 13 inch Mid 2009? I'm aware there are two RAM slots in my machine, but in past experiences with other laptops/desktop computers (not Apple) there was a default maximum which couldn't be overidden despite how much RAM was inserted.

You can upgrade up to 8GB using 2 x 4GB 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 modules. That's the maximum (unlike 2011 and later models which Apple tells you can only hold 8GB but can actually run 16GB).
If you do order RAM, order from a Mac memory specialist - Crucial, OWC, Corsair, etc.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • How can I make app use all available space in window?

    Hi,
I'm trying to embed my flash app in a browser window and have
it use all available space. I've found plenty of tutorials online
that tell me how to make it take up the whole window, and they
work, but that isn't what I want. I have other content on the page
(a bar of links across the top). I thus want the flash app to take
up the full width and almost all the hight, leaving enough vertical
space for the link bar at the top. Right now, I have it set to 100%
for both height and width in the object tag, and it displays the
link bar, but the bottom of the flash gets chopped off (an amount
exactly equal to the height of the link bar). It seems that setting
height=100% means 100% of the full window height, not the unused
height. Is there any way to make it do what I want?

I believe the 100% will be relative to the parent container
    of the Object/Embed tag.
If the Flex app is in say, a DIV that is correctly sized,
then 100% will fill the DIV. So I think you will need to get your
div sizing dynamically. A CSS expression maybe?

  • PSE 13 organizer consumes all available RAM and crashes

I have found that I am unable to use PSE13 Organizer for more than a couple of hours without my system becoming unstable. Organizer keeps requesting RAM until it has taken up all available RAM and my virtual memory file has expanded to fill the hard drive it is on. At this point Organizer and most other running programs crash, the system becomes unstable and Windows issues  out of memory warnings. I am at a loss as to what to do about this. Does anyone know if Adobe is planning on fixing this rather major bug?
I am running Windows 8.1 64 bit on an AMD X6 1090 with 16GB RAM.
    Thanks

That's the first time I see that problem on Elements forums and bug reports.
Investigating your particular situation will require more info:
    - on your hardware, your preferences (scratch disk)
    - your organizer usage (photos or videos), autoanalyzer and other opened softwares
    - any plugins?
What happens if you stop and restart the organizer at shorter intervals? Do you see the RAM and virtual memory grow the same way?
The only remotely similar situation I have met on all Elements versions is the impossibility to delete a large number of files in the same batch. The Organizer slowly fills all the RAM, then issues an error message and rolls back to the situation before the delete command. No crash.

  • How to use parallel sequence in capacity planning.

How we can use parallel seq in capacity planning?we have two machines which can be run parallel for production ,now how  to distribute capacity load? suppose for the production of 100 km,we required 1000 min when it is produced through only one machine. Now if 2 machines are used simultaneously we required 500 min.How to see this in capacity planning?

    Dear,
For calculating Available capacity you have options like minimum capacity, normal capacity and maximum capacity. You can select this option in work center-capacity tab for individual capacity category.
With parallel sequence and with both machines you can select maximum capacity option and plan your capacity.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Updating podcasts: Full menu not available

I cannot force my podcasts to update by choosing the menu on the podcast when there is no specific podcast available on my iTunes. The full menu is available when the Podcast gropu has at least one specific podcast in it.

I had the same problem. I don't know if Apple screwed this up and its a bug or something but how I fixed it is instead of using the list view you have to view the podcasts in the "cover" view {the middle button in the view options} and then you can click on each podcasts and the full menu is there for each one.

  • Available Ram in CS6 is inexplicably low

    Hi.
I've installed Photoshop CS6 on my Macbook Pro Retina i7 with 8gb of RAM. Running latest version of OSX Mountain Lion.
The system is obviously 64bit, as is the hardware. In the spashscreen of PS CS6, it says x64, so I know it's not running in 32bit.
Nonetheless, I have only got 1829Mb indicated as "available Ram". Why can't PS "see" the other 6Gigs?
When selecting the PS.app in "programs", and getting info, there is no option about 32 or 64bit to be found.
I think I'm missing something, but can anybody explain what?
    Tx in advance,
    Peter

    Hi Chris,
Can't explain what happened, but as I checked the Sytem Log info, the amount of RAM used by photoshop fluctuates  ??! I entered two occasions (1) and (2), but I've seen it at 2Gb and less as well...
Same in preferences. I can't say it's ever the same...
I must say that I did copy the plug-ins folder from CS5 to CS6 blindly, in order to keep the plugins. In the beginning it stated that some of the plugins couldn't be loaded, so I erased them from the plug-ins folder, and that seemed to work.
On the other hand, since I posted my first request, I didn't do anything in order to change the behavior of CS6.
I have Lightroom 4 open all the time with a library of approx. 5Gb Maybe this has an influence on things?
I hope you can figure this out.

  • My MBP mid 2014 is using too much RAM

My MBP mid 2014 is using too much ram on kernel task, and some others what can I do to fix this?

To add to Tim's excellent advice, look at my numbers for my  quad-core i7 iMac with 12GB RAM installed:
As you can see, the system has reserved almost all the available RAM but the swaps are zero and the memory pressure is on the bottom of the scale. My computer runs very fast.
RAM handling in OSX changed with OS10.9 and continues in 10.10. The measures you were using only apply to Mac OSX 10.8 and older.
If your swaps move up into the Gig range, you are probably using a bunch of RAM. You cannot upgrade RAM in a 2014 Retina model so it behooves you to avoid third-party utilities like "FreeMemory,"  keep an eye on Safari extensions, and be frugal with your user login items (System Preferences > Users and Groups > {your account} > Login Items tab).

  • MacBook Pro using too much RAM

I have  15" MacBook Pro, purchased in February, 2013.  It has 2.6 Ghz Intel i7 processor, 8 GB RAM and a 750 GB hard drive.  The HD is about 25% filled, mostly with photos.  It came with Mountain Lion, I upgraded to Mavericks, then to Yosemite.  I go back and forth between Safari and Chrome for my browser.  (I've heard Chrome uses too much memory, but I've found the opposite to be the case for my computer.)  All upgrades went smoothly, no problems.   I love using it, EXCEPT...
Over the past year, I've thought it was using too much RAM for very simple activities and it slows to a crawl using Aperture or MS Word.  Even when just web browsing, and nothing else open or running, the computer will use 6 to 7 gigs of available RAM.  Using Aperture is so slow it's no longer fun... I wait and wait for the beach ball to go away and it does, eventually (Won't need to worry about Aperture for too much longer, I guess).  I've been thinking about Lightroom to replace Aperture, but I'm worried that I will have similar problems with a new program.  Any suggested solutions?  Thanks!

    Hey danfrompeoria,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you are using a lot of memory. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Laptop using too much RAM

I've had this problem for ages now and I want to know why.
These are the stats from my Activity Monitor:
    Free: 170mb
    Wired: 927mb
    Active: 2.02gb
    Inactive: 947mb
    Used: 3.85gb
    VM size: 258.16gb
    Page ins: 47.91gb
    Page outs: 7.4gb
    Swap used: 3.95gb
Correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't this mean the system is desperate for memory and could be using up to 3.85gb + 3.95gb = almost 8gb (used + swap)?
After like a week my laptop is nonstop beach balling the ram available runs to 0mb and the system stall, more evidence pointing to the lack of RAM.
But heres the problem, when I add up the real and virtual ram of all processes I get the following totals:
Total real = 2.83 GB (system claims this to be as high as 8gb from above)
Total virtual = 7.74 GB (system claims this to be over 250gb)
I've had multiple apple engineers on it and none of them have any idea. This was an upgraded system from leopard to snow leopard. I've tried reinstalling the system and copying my home folder back over and only installing the software I need, doesn't make any difference.
Theres a gushing memory leak somewhere and I want to find it. Any suggestions?

No, what it means is that you don't understand the data. Your computer has 4 GBs of RAM installed. At the moment you used AM to provide the statistics your computer had 170 MBs of Free and 947 MBs of Inactive RAM or a total of 1,170 MBs of Available RAM. The balance of the 3.85 GBs of RAM is in use. 927 MBs is in use by the OS - Wired - and 2.02 GBs is Active meaning it is in use by the running applications you are using.
If your computer has a swap file in use of 3.95 GBs, then it means you are trying to use too many applications concurrently for the amount of RAM you have installed. This will result in severe slowdown accompanied by excessive thrashing of the hard drive. Simple solutions: 1. Run fewer applications concurrently; or, 2. Install more RAM.
The information on Virtual RAM is irrelevant and has meaning only for programmers. It has nothing to do with actual memory use by programs.
I doubt any Apple engineers have looked at this or they could have told you what I've said above. If you spoke to engineers without a clue, then I doubt they know anything about Macs and probably work for another company, not Apple. For more about memory usage in OS X see the following:
About OS X Memory Management and Usage

A detailed look at memory usage in OS X

  • Available ram setting in photoshop cs5 / cs6 / cc

    hello,
i would like to know if the ram setting slider in photoshop preferences/setting is meant to be for all
the available ram in the computer or all available ram, which stays free from all other sametime running apps?
for example, if i run osx 10.8 or 10.9, i use to run ONLY photoshop and no other app besides, so the
finder would need maybe 2 or 3 GB RAM, and the rest is for photoshop.
does the ram setting count with finder ram consumption or without?
my imac has 32GB RAM - so, if i set ram to 70% (out of 32GB) in photoshop settings, the finder can use 30% of 32GB, yes?
anyway, it wont show "available ram is 32GB" in the settings, it shows less than 32GB would be available, so
is this the answer to my question?
could i set it to 80% or 90%, when i only run photoshop (cs5 / cs6 / cc) and no other app besides? (only the 10.8.5 or 10.9 finder)
or would this mean performance lags in photoshop?
    thanks!

I would go with the suggested ram settings in the memory slider. Going over can affect other programs other than the finder and in my experience, I have never seen much of a benefit.
You have 32 GB so you can give it a try and if you run Mt. Lion, look at the Activity Monitor and see how it affects the memory allocated to the system.  Look at your Page outs to Page ins. Page outs should be 20% or less of Page ins. Some prefer 5%. The less the faster your machine will perform.
