Full widescreen on 16:9, letterboxed on 4:3

Just finished my first DVDSP project (a daunting task after making the leap from iDVD) and worked my way through producing an anamorphic project that plays 16:9 on a widescreen. Problem is it's squeezed on 4:3. I thought setting the display mode to "16:9 letterbox" would set it to play widescreen on a 16:9 player, and letterboxed on a 4:3 player.
A response in a recent post I came across suggested "setting the track to letterbox." Two questions: First, does this reduce the quality of playback in 16:9; And second, how do you do this - set the track to letterbox.
Thanks in advance for your help. - Mark

Hello Mark,
I am experiencing your problem with 16:9 aspect being squeezed on a 4:3 TV Have tried setting 16:9 letterbox for both track and menus but the problem is not solved, as my movie is still squeezed on an old 4:3 television.
Wondered if your solution worked and if you had any other solutions
Would appreciate any help.
Thanks,

  • Cannot get full widescreen picture (16:9) via VGA

I'm trying to setup my LCD HDTV as an external monitor for my MacBook. The issue is that the TV is not displaying a full 16:9 image from the MacBook; it's only showing a 4:3 image, so there are large black bars on the side of the picture.
    Setup
    - TV: Samsung 40" LN-T4061F HDTV (full 1080p resolution)
    - Connection: mini-DVI to VGA, VGA to TV
When I go to System Preferences > Displays, it finds the Samsung without an issue. It even defaults the resolution to 1920x1080, 60Hz. But for some reason (in both mirror and non-mirror mode) the display on the Samsung is 4:3 so I don't get the full widescreen capability.
I can certainly try something like SwitchRes X but I thought I'd check the forums first to see if anyone could provide some help. Thanks in advance.

    hey there jsizz,
does your TV have over/under scan? you might be able to get "fullscreen" w/ a miniDVI to DVI +DVI or HDMI cable. the MacBook "officially" only supports up to a 23" display, but i've successfully connected to my 42" Sony LCD Projector HDTV & gotten fullscreen using a miniDVI + DVI>HDMI cable, which has over/under scan control.
    good luck.

  • Video out not using full widescreen on a 23.5" monitor

I have an Asus 23.5" LCD which I use for TV and my Xbox. Both use the widescreen how it should. But when I plug my Macbook into it, I get 2" bars on the left and right. However, if I uncheck "mirror display," my desktop background fills the entire screen. I mean, the second desktop, or the extended desktop uses the full widescreen format.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
in 'Mirror Mode' both the internal and the external display use the same resolution, which with the MacBook is 1280 x 800.
Only in 'Extended Mode' the internal and the external can use different resolutions.
You might wanna check if the Asus LCD has an option to 'remove' the black borders, when using a resolution that is not the native (full) resolution of it.
If this is possible, you might experience however a less sharper image on the Asus since it is not using its native resolution.

Intermittent issues will point to a local network/wifi issue.
Reboot ATV and router, make sure both are up to date
    Try ethernet
The home sharing connection will cut out if the iMac goes to sleep.

  • Getting widescreen .mov to properly letterbox

I have a 624x352 .mov file and want to burn a properly letterboxed DVD on a regular TV. I cannot figure out a way to do it with just iDVD. If I pick a 4:3 theme and drop in the movie I get no letterboxing with the DVD, just a pan and scan DVD. A widescreen theme is just wrong. The only way I have figured out how to do this is to drop the movie into iMovie with format DV, then share to iDVD (a 4:3 theme) and then burn. This seems to play properly on a DVD player. But the weird thing is that if I play this on my Mac fullscreen I get black on all sides. Get info says 720x480 but it clearly is wider than 720. But it could be even wider with no black bars on the sides. This is clearly different from a commercial DVD which will fill up the entire width and letterbox top and bottom.
Does anyone know how to make this work other than the way I said?

Ok , but why use only iDVD when this might help?

    Yes...and no....
Anamorphic DV is 720 X 480, just like normal DV, but when it is displayed it is stretched to 16:9 format......both have the exact same number of pixels before they are displayed

  • HELP!!! Export widescreen as 4:3 letterbox?

    Hello,
I want to know how to take my widescreen video and export it as 4:3 but with the letterbox bars at the top and bottom. I have both widescreen and 4:3 video and I want to mix them in DVDSP but put them on the same track. Thanks so much! BTW, I have Final Cut Studio 3.

Your original production formats would be helpful information.
There is extensive letterboxing information in the manual. You have not explicitly stated what your final screen image will be but I am going to assume you want to play your DVD and have 4x3 and widescreen seamlessly intercut. You do not necessarily want to do that in DVDSP. You want to give DVDSP a single flattened movie.
There are a few different ways to achieve the effect. The one I recommend, since you're new to this, is to build your project in FCP, applying letterbox mattes where necessary, create and then export a single, flattened, standard def movie that you will import into DVDSP.

  • Emergency: Pan-Scan / Letterbox / Pan-Scan & Letterbox??

90 minute docu going to replicators in 2 hours.
Master is a 16:9 HDV that's been exported to MPEG2. I want menu to be 16:9 (16:9 for full widescreen TV & 16:9 letterbox for 4:3 TV). I've already got 3 pages of menues set up with 14 buttons each. (I'm told Pan-Scan & Letterbox has only room for 12).
What do I set my menues at for getting my 16:9 menu on widescreen TV (letterboxed on 4:3 TV)???
    Instant help much much appreciated.
    Thank you,

  • ON EXPORT WIDESCREEN/LETTERBOX GOES AWAY?

Everything when I am editing looks good, it is in widescreen etc. I shot HD with a 1080i 60. When I go to capture using the Easy Setup for 1080 60i everything looks fine, and when I edit everything is fine as well. Its just when its time to export whether I use quicktime or compressor, the final exported video is stretched and is no longer in widescreen or contains the letterboxing. If anyone could help with this I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks,
    DP

I use compressor, and export the same way I always have done so I am confident it doesnt have anything to do with the export settings, I feel it is something so simple like im not doing something I need to do because its in HD or something along those lines. When it did work however Everytime I added any video, I had to render it. Now when I add video to the timeline, it doesnt need rendering unless an effect is used on it. Maybe I captured differently than the first time as well. Im confused and please if you think its something very obvious dont hesitate to say it, expect it being the simplest problem when it comes to me and FCP. Thanks!

    hi,
try putting a letterbox effect on any clip... it works well in the viewer display.. but when i go full screen... the letterbox effect does not work properly... the cinemascope is not visible on top but only on the bottom in an unusual size.
so instead if i put a png overlay image on top layer in timeline as a cinemascope... i get the same problem if i go full screen...
Pl. try the letterbox effect option and let me know if this is an issue with the software of is it specific to me ?

  • Help! Rescue project from "letterbox" to real widescreen.

I have started a project with the wrong settings in "easy setup". This means that instead of 16x9 widescreen, I get the "letterbox" (black fields over and under the frame) in 4 x 3. I have a lot of work behind me, and hope it is possible to change the project to real widescreen. I changed the settings in easy setup after I had started, but that seems to be too late, it doesn't have any effect.
The setting I'm told I should have chosen in easy set up is "DV-PAL 32 kHz Anamorphic". What I chose, was ""DV-PAL 32 kHz", that is without "Anamorphic". I'm quite new to Final Cut, so maybe I haven't understood this right anyway. But still, I need my work changed to real wide screen, and hope it is not too late!
Could something be done in the exporting-process, after I have finished the project? I have iMovie ´08, if that's of any help, or could any other application be of use?
    Please help!
    Thanks a lot!

No, you don't remove the attributes before you copy. You copy first and then you paste.
And then you remove attributes. You said you added a clip to the new timeline. That's wrong. You have to remove the attributes before you can add more clips.
Copy the clips from the wrong sequence. Paste into the new sequence. Select all the clips and use remove attributes.
Your bad sequence should look like this:
After it's in the new sequence it should look like this:
DV PAL Anamorphic are NOT the correct settings for the right project. You need to use the 720p25 preset. Your media is HD not standard definition.

  • 16:9 NOT to letterbox in HDTV?

    Hi,
I should be able to do this . . . and CAN'T! It's making me crazy!! We have 2 Canon XL-2 cameras. We now are shooting in 16x9. (Or we're going to - depending on this answer!!)
Bottom line - when we create a DVD in iDVD - it letterboxes perfectly when viewed on a 4x3 television. As it should! Perfect.!
BUT . . . when viewed on an HDTV, or a 16x9 television - it STILL LETTERBOXES! I thought it's NOT supposed to do that??? I thought on a widescreen television set - it should take up the full screen, because it already IS 16x9! Why letterbox it on a widescreen TV? Feels like I'm gettin' cheated on real estate space.
In FCPro, we keep timeline sequence setting to our normal default - NTSC-DV. (Someone from the Apple Store told us to set it - thru Easy Setup - to "NTSC-Anamorphic - but THAT caused all kinds of problems when imported into iDVD, so we DON'T do that. It kept the picture looking squished 4x3 in iDVD, unless we ran it thru Anamorphicizer.) The video looks perfect (widescreen) in the canvas and viewer in FCPro -
So shouldn't it look "full screen" automatically on a widescreen television, and look letterboxed on 4x3 (which it does)? Is this a setting we're supposed to set our DVD player (hooked to the TV) to? Is there a setting we're supposed to change our widescreen TV to?
Thanks - if anybody knows this simple question that we SHOULD know!
    Larry
    Macbook Pro 17   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Larry:
I don't know about iDVD but If you author your DVD in DVDSP and set all your tracks and menus as Display Mode: 16:9 letterbox you'll get the automatic letterbox in 4:3 TVs and full screen in 16:9 ones.
Of course your sequence setting in FCP must be adjusted to Anamorphic.
But be aware that some settings in your DVD player and TV can override those settings.
    Hope that helps !

  • Widescreen looks zoomed in on tv

I've created a film in FCE 4. It wasn't filmed in widescreen, but changed to it in FCE on the timeline properties. I've exported>quicktime movie>not self-contained. Open the file in Quicktime Pro>window>show movie properties>video track, selected to preserve aspect ratio, set pixels to 853x480.
On a standard tv it looks the way I want it to, with slight black lines on top and bottom. On a widescreen, the picture fills the whole screen but cuts portions off as well. Like it's zoomed in. It wasn't my tv, but i'm pretty sure the settings on the tv weren't set to be zoomed in. It seemed like a problem with aspect ratio or an error when it was sent to iDVD and then burned. I'm not sure how to fix this problem. What ratio is necessary to keep all the footage on the screen?

I'm watching via dvd burned through iDVD 09. The settings in iDVD when imported were set to 16:9 widescreen.
Was the original iDVD movie 16:9, letterboxed, or 4:3 aspect ratio? All of these formats are encoded to the DVD in a 720x480 data matrix no matter which form their display may take. Therefore, it is necessary to khow if the original content should be imported for editing as a 4:3 (no anamophic flag) or 16:9 (with anamorphic flag) for proper editing and further processing as this flag (or lack thereof) should also be passed on for other software to know how to process the file. (E.g., if being sent back to iDVD after editing for re-burning, should the anamorphic flag be added or omitted? If being played in the QT Player, should it use the current size setting for playback or the anamorphic flag for playback? Etc., etc., etc.
I'm not familiar with the difference between "current size" and "anamorphic" pixel aspect ratio.
these are the settings that tell a particular application or device how to display your movie. You don't really have to know anything about them as long as you don't do anything to prevent their proper use. Knowing how they are set and if they are properly set would help in knowing if your file is properly set and the TV setting is performing a zoom or if your messing with the dimensions zoomed the content during editing and the flag caused a second zoom during a subsequent encoding process.
All I really know is that posted a question on how to get my video burned to widescreen via iDVD and was sent this link. http://www.fcpbook.com/Video9.html. I followed the steps.
No, your original question seemed to be asking why a "widescreen file looks zoomed on tv?" Secondly, your reference is either out of date (assumes current applications don't recognize/use the anamorphic flag when present) or assumes your original source file does not contain an anamorphic flag (which what I have been determining from the start here). Further, this web page only describes how to prepare content for burning if your original source file has or can be re-scaled to anamorphic dimensions to allow older versions of iDVD to burn the content as an anamorphic DVD which does not actually increase its quality. If editing is not required, then the quickest and best way to re-burn the disc is to simply to image the original disc and burn as many new copies as you may want as often as you may require.
The original film content is 4:3 full screen.
Aha.. Now we are finally getting somewhere. If the original movie is full screen, then it should be captured or imported to FCE using one of the "non-anamorphic" easy settings. (I.e., one of the settings that does not say anamorphic or HD.) Otherwise the content is automatically captured/converted for editing in your default compression format (or have to be re-rendered if "drop imported" either for editing/previewing or prior to output). A full screen or letterboxed file should be processed as "Full Screen" content. On you 4:3 TV it will display as a either a full screen movie or as letterboxed content just as the original content did and display the same on an HD TV in the "Full Screen" and (usually) in an "auto aspect" mode. Some HDTVs also have modes that will spread the width of you movie to fit the widescreen width but not increase the height. Some will do this by evenly widening the display across the entire screen or allow to display the central are at near true aspect ration and increasingly widen the display proportionally toward the edges. You can normally spot these settings as the people and objects appear shorter and fatter than normal. In a zoomed mode object/people aspects remain normal but the height of the screen is usually expanded to fill the vertical screen (or expand vertical deflaction but add a caption dedicated area below the screen) with the width being expanded in the same proportion which as you noted, effectively crops the display width. Still other HD TVs may have additional, fixed display aspects (e.g., 16:9 and/or 14:9) which also disregard the settings of the input signal.

  • Video export via component not widescreen and bad quality

I have a dvd ripped to a .mov file. Chose to keep maximum quality and resolution. Its over 6gb. Its widescreen/letterbox/16:9.
When i connect to my 42" hi def tv via component cable, the full widescreen is not shown, it zooms in and cuts off the sides. I have tried widescreen on/off on the phone, and the tv's aspect settings, but nothing works.
    Anyone know why this is?
Also the quality is really bad.
Its the same if using airplay so suspect its the phone.
I am quite disappointed by this, i thought it would show the video as it is on the .mov file on the computer. Itunes plays it fine.
Would the ipad do the same as the phone, or output video properly as it's supposed to be?
    Thanks

I found the issue but dont know how to fix it... I have 4 mp4 files of the high quality and widescreen format. I imported them into iMovie so I can export as one big file. When adding them to the project iMovie just reduces the clips quality and does not show them at widescreen and crops the left/right sides off so it can fit in the iMovie window. There is nothing in the movie properties to fix this.

  • Problems whilst capturing widescreen DV

    Capturing widescreen video:
Have captured 3 reels of widescreen DV PAL but 1 on e of them has not captured in widescreen but in squashed up standard format, whereas the other 2 have captured in full widescreen, but as far as I'm aware we haven't changed any settings whilst capturing....also the widescreen footage has to be rendered before it will play on the timeline.....any ideas or solutions gratefully received.

The preset must have been changed before the clip was captured. Change the anamorphic flag for the clip in the browser.
Is the clip in the timeline letterboxed? You need to set to preset to DV anamorphic and make a new sequence.

  • Combining 4:3 and 16:9 video in a single widescreen project

I am working on my first DV widescreen project in iMovie 6. The majority of the video footage I'm using was shot in 16:9 (widescreen) format and imported just fine. I then imported into the same project some additional footage from a friend's camera that was shot in standard 4:3 format, however, iMovie automatically imported all such clips as "stretched" apparently in order to fill up the full widescreen window. Is there some way I can have these 4:3 clips imported into a widescreen project without distorting their original 4:3 ratio (i.e. so that they can be incorporated in a widescreen project but with black bars on the side)?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks Sue. I didn't think about importing the 4:3 footage into a separate "non-widescreen" and then cutting and pasting it into my widescreen project. My only concern is how the 4:3 clips will appear when pasted into the widescreen project. The article you linked states "iMovie HD will automatically convert the footage" so that it can be used in the new project. I'm wondering if this "conversion" means stretching out the 4:3 footage or simply pillerboxing it (which is what I want). I'll test it out when I get home tonight.
