Fullscreen apps forget their state

If I have an application in fullscreen (Safari, Mail, iCal etc) and close its windows without quitting the application two things happen:
1     the Menubar disappears.
2     if I then open the application again from the Application Switcher or the Dock the application is no longer in fullscreen.  I wish that it would remember its previous state.
Although this happens in each of the applications it is most noticeable in Safair where one is more likely to open and close windows.  In Mail and iCal it is more usual to have just one main window open all the time.

Thanks for explaining how app's loss of state can happen. However, I'm sure that the behavior of the four apps I mentioned is much worse than just a few months ago. Something must have changed, and iOS 7 is the main difference. The Kindle app behaves as it used to, but the others do not. Maybe I should note the problem in reviews of the apps themselves in the App Store -- and down rate the apps.

  • Why do some iOS 7 apps lose their state when I switch to another app and then switch back?

When I switch from an app like Safari, the New York Times, Facebook, or Google+ Hangouts to some other app and then switch back, the first app takes me to its initial page, not to my place in the document I was reading. The Kindle app, on the other hand, seems to access the network but still manages to restore the page I was reading before the switch. I don't think my apps lost their place in earlier versions of iOS. Have other people noticed this? Is there something different in how iOS 7 switches context that requires apps to save their state differently than before? This problem is an annoying time-waster!

  • Is there any way to reverse the "swipe to switch between fullscreen apps" controls?

I feel like the "swipe left to go to the app to the left" is actually counter-intuitive, especially when they were thinking about a touchscreen when designing this OS. The scrolling, though most people aren't used to it on a computer, makes sense because you move the page in the direction as if you were moving a physical page. The switching between fullscreen apps is the opposite and isn't natural for me, especially since I have been using an iPhone and iPad for a couple years now. Is there any way of reversing this control? If not, I think they should do the same thing that they did with the "natural" scrolling and have a checkbox to give you the option of either way.

I didn't see anything in the trackpad preferences as far as direction of the swipe. If anyone else can find it, I would love to be able to reverse it.

  • My desktop crashed and I had to reinstall itunes how do I transfer all the apps and their information, music, and contacts from my iphone to the itunes software?

My desktop crashed and I had to reinstall itunes software.  My iphone has all my apps with their data, contacts, photos, videos & music.  How can I import all of the information and data on my iphone into itunes?  I downloaded one app that is a to-do-list but it indicates that if I sync with my iphone I will lose all data on my iphone and it will be replaced with the data on itunes.  I do not want to lose my data!  I have a lot of information and I cannot understand why Apple would not have a way to restore my data from my iphone to my itunes.  PLEASE HELP!

It should be like the very first time you synced your phone with I-Tunes. It will notice you haven't synced before and just copy everything from your phone into I-Tunes. It shouldn't delete anything from the phone, at least it never has for me. It just puts a copy of everything into I-Tunes and even if you delete an app for example from your phone and you decide you want it back later, you can just go back into I-Tunes and copy it back over. Hope this helps.

  • Trying to sync my iPad and get the message that "all existing apps and their data will be replaced"

Previously my Windows 7 laptop didn't recognise my iPad but I persevered and now am getting the message when trying to update the iOS that if I sync, "all existing apps and their data will be replaced" so I'll lose everything I've bought since I last synced (which is a while).  How can I back up my apps before syncing fully and then updating. I have 'transferred purchases' using the File menu but still getting the message.

Sounds like you have created a new library somehow. Ideally you would restore your old library and the problem would go away. If that is not possible then you should be able to:
Backup the device to the computer
Transfer your purchases into an authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Download remaining past purchases from iTunes in the Cloud, where available
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • When I try to sync photos, I followed all the steps, picked one folder.  When I hit "apply" I get this error message: Are you sure you want to remove 30 apps from iPad.  This will delete these apps and their data from the iPad. What have I done wrong

When I try to sync photos or music, I followed all the steps, picked onle folder, not the whole library.  When I hit "apply" I got this message:
Are you sure you want to remove 30 apps from iPad.  This will delete these apps and their data from the iPad" What can I change to just download the photos and not interfere with the apps?
(By the way, the memory is not even one quarter full)
Thanks for your help - Pat

I have the same problem.  I updated my mac to 10.5, which then had me update apps like itunes, etc. then it wanted me to sync my purchased music to my ipad before i updated the ipad...which worked ok. then when i was syncing the photos i got the same message when i hit "apply" asking are you sure you want to delete the 12 apps from the ipad -  clicked "no" and brought me back to the original screen. Got the same message when trying to move them from the hard drive to the ipad.  WHat is going on and how do I correct this? Thanks

If it was stolen seven months ago, then you are a little late to do anything about it. Buy a new one.

  • Mouse Too Sensitive in Fullscreen Apps

Normally on the XFCE4 desktop my mouse is perfect (using Synaptics driver on my Lenovo Ideapad S205) but if I open any fullscreen apps such as ScummVM, the mouse suddenly becomes incredibly sensitive and moves far too fast (and quite inaccurately too, making it hard to select some things as if the mouse is suddenly operating as a very low DPI).
This is just inside the app, if I leave the fullscreen program then the mouse if fine again.
Has anyone else experienced this before and does anyone know of a fix?

I would guess that it's a bug in SDL, and check the SDL bugzilla.
Also check the xorg bugzilla re synaptics bugs, 'cos Arch uses bleeding-edge xorg (I'm still on xorg-server 1.9.5 with patches pinched from Fedora and Mageia, because I found 1.10.x unstable).

  • Are there keyboard shortcuts for switching to desktops with fullscreen apps?

Coming from SL, one functionality that I used a lot was keyboard shortcuts to go to different applications.
For instance, I had assigned Mail to Space 2, iTunes to Space 3 etc.
Then it was possible to instantly go to Mail by pressing alt-2, to iTunes with alt-3 etc.
In Lion, it is possible to assign Applications to desktops, and use the same commands to go to these desktops. However, as soon as an application is 'fullscreened' it leaves its previous desktop, and cannot be reached with the old keyboard shortcuts.
    My question:
is it possible to create a keyboard shortcut to switch to a desktop containing a fullscreen app?

This is quite possible. The way to do it is with keyboard shortcuts. If you check the appropriate boxes you can use a keyboard combination of Control and the Desktop #. It makes it very easy to swtich between desktops.

  • I have just updated to the latest io5 and have lost apps and their data, can i reverse the new update to get back what i had on there?

i have just updated to the latest ios 5 and have lost apps and their data, can i reverse the new update to get back what i had on my ipad?

There is no need to do that, I had the same problem pal! Just do this and all should be fine!
Delete one of the app's and re-install it, then for some reason everythign is restored to as it was!
Hope you get on fine, let me know!
    Thanks

  • Order of the fullscreen apps?

I want to re-arrange the order of the fullscreen apps that are open. Anyone know how to do this??

I see your problem. Unfortunately, posting on this forum does not contact apple directly. I urge you to submit feedback at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html.

  • HT4623 Why they install apps under their Apple IDs in the shop???

Why they install apps under their Apple IDs in the shop??? After I realised that, I cannot make any updates for the apps installed there. Shall I reinstall them or otherwise the problem can be solved?

The shop where I bought my Iphone
So, not an Apple Retail Store or an authorised Apple resellers shop?
They even said that without installing the apps, they will not give me a warranty.
The iPhone warranty is provided by Apple if buying a new iPhone from an authorised seller, not the shop.

  • Where do apps download their updates to?

    Hi folks,
    We've now got two Mac's.
We run pretty much the same software on each. In NZ we have data limits on our broadband... yes, still in the dark ages down here in Kiwi land. Many of the programs on my computer download updates automatically, or after asking me if I'd like to install the update.
What I would like to know is if there is any particularly folder location where apps download their updates to, even if just temporarily? I'd like to grab the file and use it on our other mac, so that we are not downloading all these updates twice.
Any help on this is much appreciated. I've turned up nothing through online searches so far.
    With thanks,
    Jonathan

That's tricky as it can vary among different apps. Many apps clean up after themselves to free up disk space. You could check in /Library/Updates (typically used by Apple updater packages) or in /Username/Library/Application Support and check through each software vendor, or in /Username/Library/caches.
For the Mac OS system updates, you can download the full updater package from apple.com rather than doing so via software update. These are usually very large updates.
Also consider doing a spotlight search for Installer Packages, Disk Images or gzip files. You have to enable searching of system files locate all of such files: in Finder, press cmd-F, click the +, click the dropdown on the left, choose "other" and choose system files.
