  • Oxford Mercury series instruments : Works with NI-MAX but fails with Labview

    Hi,
I am trying to interface an Oxford Instruments "Mercury Series" power supply for superconducting magnets, I am using Labview 2013 and an NI USB-GPIB-HS.
The problem I have is the following:
    1.  After connecting the instruments I run NI-MAX (ver 14.0) to check that the instruments are recognized by the GPIB-bus. Everything goes fine, the instruments are detected and I can communicate with it by typing commands in the 488.2 communicator. Read and write both work fine.
    2. Then I try to write my own code in Labview to run the instrument.  The standard 488.2 commands Send/Recieve or GPIB-Write anf GPIB-Read do not work.
There are other instruments on the same bus also - which work fine with both NI-MAX as well as my vi-s from Labview.  I have tried doing the "obvious" things
like intialising the GPIB before sending any command and then do a Device Clear for the specific instruments before sending other commands.
    3. So the question is : What can be the reason for an instrument to respond correctly via NI-MAX but fail to do when addressed from Labview with essentially
    similar basic commands?
I have tried tracing the origin of the errors via I/O trace (NI-spy), but they didn't help in locating the precise problem.
Would be grateful if somebody could suggest an answer.
Have other people faced this before?
    Thanks-
    Kanti

The instruments are actually newer  (rather than an older version). You are correct that they need an extra "\n" after the command string - which I had provided.
The command tryped in NIMAX was simply  "*IDN?\n"   in response to which  the instrument sends its identification string correctly.
All other commands also worked properly.
I then tried the same in Labview using   "Send" and "Recieve". The Recieve generates the error.
I am attaching the trace file (converted to txt) and the VI. Line 10-14 has the error.
    Thanks

  • Can't open the driver written by LabView5 with LabView 8.6

    http://www.oinst-software.com/OIRI/docs/LV5drv/lv5drv.htm
I would like to use these drivers for oxford instruments with LabView 8.6. (I have the latest version of LabView, only.)  But these drivers are written by LabView 5. So, I cannot open the drivers with the latest version. When opening, the alert occurs "VI version is too early to convert the current LabView version." In this case, is it no way to open these drivers. Does anyone help to convert these drivers for use with the latest version ?

    Dear Dennis Knutson,
    Thank you for your response.

  • Labview memory

    Hi all ,
I am using following VI to convert binary file into a CSV file with a specific formatting.
I am facing problems in deallocation of memory using this VI. I check the PF usage under performance tab of windows task manager before and after the VI runs. It takes up about 0.23 GB of memory even after I have shut the VI. Consecutive runs of the same VI result in 0.23 GB or less being added up again and again.
Is there a way to allocate memory and recover all of it back when the VI shuts down?
    Thanks

    Hi
Thank you all for ur help
Sorry about not posting the other covert array VI earlier.
The binary file is about 40 MB, this one is just a test file and could be bigger in future reaching upto 1 GB.
About 'after i have shut the VI', i check the pf usage under performance tab in the windows task manager. its is about 850mb before i run the vi for the first time. it builds upto 1.15GB during the run. I assumed that the deallocation memory vi would return me all the memory and bring back the pf usage to 850mb but it only returns 0.15GB. so the pf usage is 1gb after vi run. it remains around 1GB after each successive run.
is there a way to recover this 150 mb as well after each VI run?
Deallocation Memory VI - i tried putting using it in several ways. I made the sequences into subVIs and had the DelMem VI in each on of them. that didn't help either. i read some where that using a lot of DelMem VI could cause labVIEW to use more memory than required, so i just put one in last sequence box of the main vi.
I could try using local variable and post the results.
    Thank

  • Manually installing driver for Oxford Instruments IPS power supply

    Hi!
I am trying to install the driver for an Oxford Instrument IPS 120-10 power supply. I have found the neccesary driver on the Oxford Instruments site:
    http://www.oinst-software.com/OIRI/docs/LV5drv/lv5drv.htm
My problems stems from the fact the copy of LabVIEW is on a non networked  computer, so I have to download the driver on this one and transfer by a USB stick.
The driver was written for version 5.0 and I am operating 8.5, will this be a problem?
How do I install this file? When unzipped I have a collection of .LLB files and one .INI file but no further instructions.
I can't use the "find instrument drivers..." as its not connected to the internet.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Jon

The best place to place an instrument driver is in the instr.lib folder. That way, after re-starting LabVIEW, the functions will automatically appear on your palette.
You will have a mjor problem with the driver though. LabVIEW 8.5 will not open a VI written in 5.0. You would need LabVIEW 6.x or higher to open it and then save it. If you don't have any other version of LabVIEW, you might try posting the driver and ask for help in converting it.

  • Video and LabVIEW

    Hi,
I've written an app in labview which analyses PAL video footage at the field
level. To do this I have to save the video as a series of graphics files and
then load them one at a time using an IMAQ function. My question is, is it
possible to load a frame (ideally a field) directly from the video footage
(mpeg) from within labview? This would save me a lot of messing about with
the video before I got to actually analysing it.
    Any ideas?
    cheers,
    and.

Try to search on the net some tools to convert MPEG to a series of BMPs or something else (for example, you can do it with 3DStudio but is not the cheapest solution ... :-) ).
Another solution could be screen capture, but not elegant at all.

    Hi Guddan,
I created a RFC having a query which is taking a long time to execute. So i want to close RFC connection with portals which is via java connector(JCO) before that query and open the connction again after that query.
I guess i will need to understand your requirement a little more in detail, as i understand you have an RFC which has a query within to fetch some data and is taking a long time to do so. In the meantime you don't want to keep the connection open?
My question would be, Is the role of this RFC to only execute the query and fetch the data or does it do something else?
If it does other things and these are independent of the query execution, then you can span a parallel call within the RFC to execute the query and in the meantime the RFC does the other things (or vice versa) hence reducing the overall time taken.
If the sole purpose of this RFC is to execute the query, then you will not be able(i mean to say there is no simple and direct way of doing this) to close the connection after the Query is started and re-establish the connection after its execution, for a simple reason that - how will you know if the query has completed it's execution, so that you can establish the connection back.
Alternate solutions, make this a two way asynchronous call, 1) You invoke the RFC asynchronously and close the connection, the RFC in turn will execute the query and transfer the data to JCO via another RFC call.
If this needs to be a synchronous call, then you will need to optimize the query to its best.

  • LabView Exe Application file not launch Excel application for report generation

    Dear All,
I created one LabVIEW application file for report generation (using Excel Template).
While I run the program in programming mode it works well and create the report file in the specified path.
After creation of the application file(exe), it gives the correct path of where the excel template is placed. The same path is given to New Report.vi, but it gives the error 'File Not Found'.
Tell me, is any other configuration required for generating Excel reports? (During exe application mode)
    Give me the solution.
    Thank You
    Jegan.

    Hello,
Most likely you are encountering a problem of stripping and/or building paths.  Probably the easiest thing to do is put a couple indicators on your front panel for the path or paths you care about, build your exe, and make sure you are really using the path you'd like.  If you always put the report at some deterministic place relative to the exe (that is, even it the exe is moved, it will go with the exe and remain in the same relative path location, then you can use the Current VIs Path funtion found in the ... File I/O -> File Constants palette as a start path (where you will want to strip at least the exe name off of course).
I think this will bring some clarity to the issue!

  • Error involving Report Generation Toolkit and Labview Run Time Engine

Developed an application using LabVIEW 6.1 and LabVIEW Report Generation Toolkit for Microsoft Office 1.0.1. From there, tried to build a shared application for use with the LabVIEW Run Time Engine. The Run Time version functions properly until "New Report.vi" is called and then an error is generated, code 7, calling out "Open VI Reference in New Report.vi" could not be found. When building the application, I did include the "NI Reports Support" in the advanced installer options. The machine used for original development and application build is running Windows XP Pro and Office XP. Any suggestions??

I am having the exact same problem but with LV 6.1 and M/S WORD 2000. It appears that the "New Report.vi" is trying to open "C:\APP.DIR\Word_Open.vi" and "C:\APP.Dir\Word_Open_Document.vi" by reference. The "OFFICE 2000.TXT" says that "_exclsub.llb and _wordsub.llb must be added as support files when building an application or a dynamic link library with the application builder." I added them as Support Files and I copied them to the "C:\TESTER\" where the TESTER.EXE is and I still get ERROR 7 in "NEW REPORT.VI" at VI OPEN REFERENCE.
Do I need to make a "C:\TESTER\DATA\" sub-dir and put the support files there?
I am building on MY COMPUTER on F: Drive on a network and transporting files to the real Tester.
    I displayed my App.Property of APP.DI
R at start up and it is C:\TESTER\ ! How would my application know that "Word_Open.vi" and "Word_Open_Document.vi" are actually inside the _wordsub.llb?
    Any ideas ?

  • Why do I get "The exception Privileged instruction (0xc0000096) occured in the application" error message when exiting LabVIEW 6.1?

I have created a vi that uses the LV-GPIB and database connectivity vis. The program runs fine and it ends execution by running the "Close Database Connection.vi".
After closing out my front panel windows and exiting LabVIEW 6.1, I get an error dialog box that reads the message "The exception Privileged instruction (0xc0000096) occured in the application". What does this error mean and how do I resolve it?
    Thanks,
    Taf

    Hi Taf,
Given the broad scope of your application, it may be best to try and isolate the problem down by taking out parts of your application and simplifying it down as much as possible until you can get a consistent version that throws this exception. I would first try to take out either the GPIB or database connectivity portions of the application to narrow down our problem. This error generally occurs when accessing DLLs and external applications, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's the GPIB or database. Let's try to see exactly which one it is and then we can dig deeper into that part of the code. Thanks for your cooperation!
