Fully understand the mastering tools in logic ANY DVD'S

Hi there, i am always trying to learn more about logic pro. Does anyone know of any great dvd's made regarding using all of the mastering tools in logic?
I do understand them in some way but would like to learn more towards an advanced level. Any info such as links, videos would be helpfull towards my seeking
hope u guys can help, thanks a million.

hi, just don't let your master bus overload.
everthing else, these days, is fair game.
you can probably let you master bus overload, on
second thought, based on the "hit" records currently
prevailing.
I agree.
Just distort the crap out of your peaks, you'll be right up there with the big boys.
Take the Limiting plugin of your choice, and set the threshold to -50dB,and then the release to 5mS. That is a sure-fire way to get it heard on the Radio. If the meters aren't completely going nuts, you are not applying enough limiting.

I'm using a pc, (windows 8.1,) and I cannot get a thick and thin line with CS6. I want to draw, but I cannot get any linework like I should. I also use Sketchbook Pro, and ToonBoom, and I get wonderful linework. But not with Photoshop.
None of the brush tool settings have any effect, even in the preview. Is there a setting I need because I'm using a pc and not a mac?

    Thanks for your response,
I'm using a Fujitsu T901 laptop, with a stylus pen. Painting works great in Photoshop, but for drawing there is no sensitivity at all.  Frans Vischer

  • Using the Fade tool in Logic 9

I am a newbe and need some help. I can use the Fade tool just fine on single audio tracks. However, I am unable to figure out how to use the Fade tool on audio tracks with multiple takes??? The Fade "<" appears when I move the cursor to the top of the track but wen is swipe to invoke a Fade, I get other behavior such as moving the track.
    What am I missing.
    Thanks in advance

Thanks Christian. That did it. Appreciate taking the time for my simple question.

  • Understanding the Power Supply?

I hope I can get help identifying a problem within the power supply on my Mac G4 DA computer.
First let me say that I have ordered a new power supply unit from a reputable dealer. However, I wish to identify and understand the problem, and hopefully make a repair with the intent of keeping it as a spare unit. I would also mention that I fully understand the dangers involved in working with potential high voltage.
What happens, is that the six-year old computer works well for about 10 minutes, then a noticeable speed change starts to occur at the Power supply. When the speed drops lower, something within the power supply starts an annoying vibration or humming that will persist until the computer is put to sleep for a few minutes. On restart the problem noise is gone, until the computer works for the usual time and then the speed starts to drop and the noise reoccurs. The noise and vibration are louder than I would expect from the fan, especially when running slow?
I believe it is an energy-saving feature of the Power Supply to lower speed when there is no great demand placed upon the computer (when it is idling). I'm finding it difficult to determine if it is specifically the fan that sets up the vibration or something else in the power supply. The fan is a replaceable item, but beyond that there would seem little I could do in the way of repairs.
Do any of you have any thoughts on this?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi, Barry!
Insure that the PSU case is relatively clean.
Disconnect the power cord. Using a pin oiler, place a tiny bit of fine lubricant at the base of the fan shaft and then see if the noise resolves. If it does, the fan bearing is likely worn or insufficiently lubricated.

  • Pro Tools or Logic

I'm not writing this thread to start a war, its just that I'm having a very hard time deciding between Pro Tools or Logic. I would eventually like to use both, but I can only afford to go with one right now and I really only want to focus my attention on one at this time as well.
Overall, I am really leaning towards Logic with a MOTU interface. However, the more I read the Pro Tools Vs. Logic debate, the more I start to question what to go with. I read so many posts with people bashing Pro Tools, but most people I know use it, most pro studios use it, and most musicians I've researched use it. Logic, on the other hand, seems like a complete package, made more for the creative side of composing/songwriting. I can get an awesome studio set with Logic/MOTU for MUCH less $$ than a Pro tools rig.
However, it seems like going the Pro Tools LE route, Digi 002, (which Is all I can afford at this point), I will be compromising quality overall. The only reason I can see going with Pro Tools is because so many people use it and it would be easy to transfer files with other Pro Tools users. Other than that, I really would like to take the Logic route.
For the record, I play guitar and bass and use drum machines. I would like to start getting more familar with midi and Logic seems like a good program for that.
What do you all think. This decision is really driving me crazy. Thanks.

    Jack,
I am a composer who has used Pro Tools since it came out over a decade ago. I have had all kinds of systems, as Digi changed over the years.
I finally ran out of money when HD came out. I could not afford to upgrade my Mix system, yet I wanted to use the most current version of the program, which Mix no longer supported. So I sold it, and got LE and an 002R. I have used this system for over a year. I have done national commercials with it and it has paid for itself many times.
I use a lot of stereo samples. That eats up tracks. The 32 track limit in LE, and the instability of virtual instrument plug ins in LE made me start thinking about Logic. It wasn't the converters in the 002R....they are terrible and you must buy something like an Apogee Mini Me and then it sounds great going in.
But it was a little over a week ago that I bought Logic 7.2. Yesterday, I had a song with 58 tracks playing back just fine on my G5. The virtual instruments work great too. It is a much harder program to use than Pro Tools, but it is much richer and deeper. There are frustrating things about it that make you scratch your head, but these are minor compared to what it gives back to you.
Unless you have over 10 grand to get a REAL Pro Tools system, and then face the fact that it will be replaced by something else in a couple years that will require you to sink thousands more into it, get Logic and take on the learning curve. Pro Tools is best for cutting audio, not dealing with midi and composers. And, I think now that Apple owns it, it will only get better, and probably easier, to work with. Buying into Digi, remember, is buying into a hardware company. They want people to get a "taste" of Pro Tools with LE, and then move up to to HD. They don't understand that most people, with the power of computers today, ain't moving up to a 10 grand system when they can do almost all of that in Logic, or even Digital Performer, Nuendo, etc.
Keep saying this to yourself...."Digidesign is a hardware company. They want and need me to buy HARDWARE to remain in existence. Hardware....hardware...money...more money.

  • LR 3.5 "Stops working" when using the brush tool.

I am not able to use the brush tool when 'developing' any image without the message "Lightroom has stopped working" coming up. I have tried developing other images with the same result. As soon as I try to brush it crashes. This has only been the case since I upgraded to LR 3.5 recently. Has anyone else experienced the same?

Mmmmm, firts I would suggest removing the Prefernce file by shifting it to the desktop (with Lr closed).

  • Report needed to list the persons- not returning the safety tools back

    dear friends,
in our client place, the stores departement, allots safety equipements to thier employee's, by mentioning duration period for return.
stores departement, already noted the date of issue and date of return in asset register.some of the employees are not returning the safety equipements,.
in as01- create asset field(from  & to  )duration is specified. how to track this.
so my clients is asking a report, which describes the list of employees, they were not returning the safety tools. is there any way to do this.
kindly help me in getting the solution.
    regards,
    g.v.shivakkumar

Well, this is really a SQL question, not an ApEx question, but here goes....
Your query would return r_number and status_id from any record that contains a status_id of 2 and not 4. Well, if it's 2, it can't be 4, so it's really returning any record where status_id is 2, which would be rows with ID 12, 876, and 33. What I think you want is a query where you find a status_id of 2 and no other record in the database has the same r_number only with a status_id of 4.
    Try
    select r_number, status_id from table1
    where status_id = '2'
    and r_number not in (select r_number from table1 where status_id = '4')
This works, but may not be the most efficient query.

  • Adjusting Text Height and Width using the Move Tool...

I have yet another question about using Type in PSE 5.0. I know you can adjust a particular types size by using the font drop down menu and clicking on any of the listed sizes or you can type in a custom size as well.
Is it though, ok to expand the Type/Text by selecting it with the Move tool and then enlarging it by using the selection handles located on the Box surrounding the text? I know you can do this, but I am wondering if you run the risk of creating a jagged look or pixalizing the text this way. The text is still vector based at this point, so I am thinking that it shouldn't be a problem, but wanted to know if it could look pixaly upon printing. I have found that I can sometimes get the text to look more the way I want using this method rather than just relying on changing the font size.
    Thanks,
    Lee

I believe you can achieve this by using the Move Tool, clicking on any one of the resizing handles surrounding the Box which the Move Tool creates when you select an object using it, and then just drag the resizing handles to expand your text to your liking.
If you press on a corner handle and press the shift-key at the same time while you drag, you should maintain the aspect ratio of your text.
But that's what my original question is above. By expanding or contracting the text in this way, are you running the risk of things looking jagged and/or pixaly. Is it okay to expand/contract text using the Move Tool or you should you only adjust by setting the Font size.

  • Logic Pro DVD TRAINING VIDEO

Someone in the past posted a logic pro dvd training video that releaseds recently. I lost contact with the url. Anyone remember it off hand?

thank you. learned a lot from the sample video. Will be ordering the video. Tell me, how do I save my sequencing info, in case I have to re initialize my hard drive.

  • I bought Logic Studio from a pawn shop with Pro Tools and an iLok. It didn't include the serial numbers, which I thought were on the iLok. Is their any way to us this as an upgrade from like eBay?

Can I buy a used version of Pro Tools with the serial numbers from eBay, then istall Pro Tools and Logic I bought from a pawn shop using them as an upgrade?

If it sounds fishy, it probably is. Serial numbers from eBay typically don't work, because they are stolen, reused, etc. Logic Pro has nothing to do with iLok. And Apples doesn't offer cross-grades or upgrades anymore. If you want their software you go to the Mac App Store application and buy it. That's the only way.

  • Can anybody explain to me why and why my Mastering Track change itself to a Mastering tool called "Add Presence to Music" and that I know have another Library for Mastering named "Logic" whith other tools than in the ordinary Library?

    "Add Presence to Music"

    Hi Flemming....
    Ok.. First things first..
If I understand what you are trying to correctly....
You have choose a channel strip Patch called "Add Presence to Music" for that track..... so thats where the name is coming from...
Patches are combinations of both plugins and settings.... Like a Multi preset for a synth instead of a single sound preset....
So... don't load in patches if you want to use your own mastering Plugin...
Create a new Audio track... with the Open Library button unchecked in the Create New Track Dialog window..
Now select the Mastering Plugin you wish to use by clicking on the Insert button in the channel strip for that audio track you just created.... and a drop down menu will appear with a list of the various FX plugins you have installed.. Choose the Plugin there... and it will open it's interface...
Next, Select the preset from within the Mastering Plugin's interface itself to choose a preset (not a Patch from the Library...)
Add other FX Plugins etc.. as you wish... by repeating the process... and you can drag them around to change the order of the FX plugins in the signal flow..
    Secondly,
Output 2 is set as a mono output.. so thats why it's only playing back 1 'side' of the output.... What happened to the original Output 1 stereo output track?
See how far this gets you..  and we can carry on if needed, later...
    Cheers..

  • Could you please help me understand the logic behind certain things in OSX?

Ok, so I try to be an open-minded guy, and I bear no particular allegiance to either OS. I own a Sony TZ and a Mac mini, and my wife has a MacBook Pro. I use both Oses.
There are certain things I have trouble understanding in th Mac OS, so what I'd really like to understand the logic behind certain design decisions in the OS, and why these might be better ways of accomplishing things. I know how to get around all of the things I mention, so I'm not looking for instructions; rather I'm looking for well-thought out explanations for why these features are the way they are.
*1. Programs don't quit when you close the window.*
    - This totally puzzles me. Why design it so that program windows are independent are from the running program itself? There must be a reason, cold someone explain how this is more efficient? To me, it's simpler to click an X on the window you are working on to completely shut down a program, rather than to either mouse through menus to select quit, or be obligated to using Command Q keyboard shortcut.
*2. Menu bars are on the desktop.*
    - Related to the first point, why make the main thing framing your desktop be something which is always changing depending on the program? Why have file menus outside the main window of the program. Having the menu bar on the desktop then necessitates an additional area, the dock, which has to be used as a launch bar and to tell you what programs are currently running. That obligates you to having 3 different areas of screen: 1 for program menus, 1 for running programs, and the program window itself. This seems very inefficient to me. Not to mention all the messy-looking floating palettes all over the place, again because everything is separated and not nicely contained in a single program window.
    - Really, having a changing menu bar that frames the desktop isn't even consistent wth the whole desktop metaphor, which is that you place things on a desktop, like programs, files, etc. Are you changing the whole desk everytime you load a new program, yet the wallpaper stays the same? Doesn't seem to be logically consistent to me.
    *3. No delete key.*
    - This one really gets me. Why make such a commonly used key be a function key (Fn + Backspace)? Why make the user press a secondary key for a major function?
    *4. No Cut command.*
    - I read something about how Cut doesn't actually make sense when moving files around, but I obviously didn't fully understand it. Why make the user command drag, when you can just do Ctrl X??.
*5. Launching Apps from the Finder.*
    - This seems weird to me, that you find and launch applications from the same thing you use to view files. Program icons in the finder are placeholders for the entire program, not files, yet they are found in the file viewer. Again, to me this seems logically mixed. I really dislike scrolling through Finder to look for apps. I know there is Spotlight and the dock (used as a quicklauncher), but these are really just workarounds for a setup which seems inherently illogical. To me at least, a menu of applications make more sense, ie, the start menu.
Anyway, those are all I can think of now, although there are other things aout OSX that don't make sense to me.
Thanks in advance! If I can understand Apple's reasoning and it is convincingly better, that will go a long way towards making me more comfortable with this OS.

    1. Programs don't quit when you close the window.
That's really more a matter of what you're used to. It comes down to a programming decision as to what Apple and Microsoft considered to make sense. MS thinks that if there are no open windows, you're done using the app. Apple thinks you aren't necessarily done yet, as others have mentioned. I certainly wouldn't want Photoshop to quit every time I closed the last open image I was working on. Would be nice though if Safari would quit when I close the last open browser window. It's quick to relaunch if you really weren't done with it, so wouldn't be much of a bother to have it shut down with the last window.
    2. Menu bars are on the desktop.
Makes way more sense the Microsoft's approach of repeating the same file menu on every open document in a program. How many places do you need to see File, Options and other common menu headings?
    2. Menu bars are on the desktop.
Related to number two. The forward app is the only one you can directly work in, so why not have the menu bar change to reflect the choices for that application? When you go back to the previous app you were in, the menu bar changes back. So what loss of functionality is there? It comes back to not having menu bars on every single open window. There's no need or purpose for it.
    3. No delete key.
    Backspace does the same thing.
    4. No Cut command.
Command+X, not Ctrl+X. This is Mac, not Windows. There's also very little need to ever do this from the keyboard. If you're moving files that are on the same drive/partition, then just drag and drop from the target folder window to the source. It's automatically a move. If going from one physical drive or partition to another, it's automatically a copy. Press and hold the Command key during the drag to make it a move.
Besides, you don't really think Windows cuts the entire folder or file contents into RAM, do you? If your computer has 4 GB of RAM, and you cut 12 GB of data, it of course can't possibly fit in the clipboard. All Windows does when you do a cut is visually remove the files and folders from the screen. If the items are going to a location on the same drive/partition, it does the same thing as if you did a drag and drop move. The file table is simply updated to reflect the new file or folder locations. If it's to a different drive/partition, it then performs a copy then delete action, same as OS X.
    5. Launching Apps from the Finder.
A program is just as much a file as any other file. It takes up space on the drive. The OS of course knows what to do with it when you double click an app. Same as it knows what to do when you double click a document related to an app. Windows is no different. An .exe file is also just as much a file as a .doc file. The .exe extension tells Windows to try and treat it as a program to load into RAM. It's not just a simple placeholder. The program has to be made up of something.

  • Don't understand the cc cleaner tool

Good morning and happy new year.
I must be the dumbest people here but I tried to follow the cc cleaner tool process explained here and I'm at a loss and stopped before making a fool of myself.
I went through the process 1 and 2 ie. I have a disk repair and an external disk backup of my system driver. (I use Win 7 Ultimate fully updated). My projects are NOT on the system drive as well as all the clips I use .
question : Will CC cleaner delete on the system drive any information related to my projects? I need a precise answer: No or Yes. The "perhaps", "maybe" etc evavive answers are not acceptable in such situations.
In  the step 2 of the help file I uninstalled with Win 7 uninstall manager different elements from CC and CS 6 that either I have no use of or that I wont use anymore as I want to stick to the latest version of CC which are PPro, AE  and Mediaencoder for the moment.
We arrive to step 3 and there I just don't understand why I should have to uninstall programs I uninstalled in the previous step. Will that step totally erase the whole programs of CC for example, or will it just clean remaining items or directories specifically related to for instance Prelude CC 2014 ? Can't people who write these messages in their scripts be once and for all precise in their wording saying what will be done?!
In this present instance I need to make a clean re-install of Mediaencoder CC as there has been most probably a problem during the recent update although it was completed without any error messages; I can't anymore re encode a project although I have not changed a line of it! The program stops suddenly and reboots my computer. I have not changed anything in the computer as well and the hardware is not the cause of the problem as it is only Media encoder which provokes the crash when it did not before the update.
This will be probably considered an ill mannered way of presenting my problem by I'm sorry to say that one cannot work cautiously enough and I don't want to see weeks of work erased and not usable even with backups because a user manual is not clear and precise in its wording. This infuriates me and I wish to know where I set foot!
Again sorry for my bad temper but really this is stressing.
Thanks in advance for your help
    Claude

My project is on driver G, my clips are on D, E and G, with a majority of them on G; Cloud CC 2014 is on Driver C with Windows 7
B/What version of Premiere Pro are you running currently? Do you have any third party plug-ins or hardware you using in conjunction with Premiere Pro? Do you know what version of Media Encoder you were using successfully before the recent update and you started having problems?
I use exclusively since I took the subscription to Cloud CC, the latest versions, I check updates or upgrades every week and of course get notification also by the automatic Cloud manager of any new version. My last update was done on the 30th of December 2014. So yes I run with the most recent programs; the problems occurred just after! And got aggravated yesterday for no reason when Media encoder and Premiere Pro did not recognized MP4 format clips with an error message that the format was not supported!!! I hope Adobe did not decide to abandon this format, because it would put my 2 projects in full jeopardy!
Before the last update I had no problems. I have uploaded on Vimeo a provisional encoded file (see
    with password rja404177 .
I decided  to separate my project in two master projects concerning each of them the 2 parts of the video, with different names as to make the projects less heavy to manage by the computer and also easier to correct or change some of the effects controls especially the use of the curves RGB effect. I have a problem of getting an even colorimetric view between three different sources of files and cameras, one source is analog, the others HD and one of the latest has been more or less over exposed, so I check every clips with the YCscope and RGB parade and Vectorscope ( there could be a problem of color broadcast due to the red of the cliffs). Just imagine what would happen If I had to do it again! The full video is 1h10 minutes long! The video here corresponds to the first master project before the division in two parts. As I use nested sequences I have transferred in the master sequence here the 3 first sequences of the film (Titles, Las Vegas to Lee's Ferry, 1st day on the river).
Yes I have Video Copilot addons but which are not used in the project as well as Red Giant Universe Premium also not used here. In fact I seldom use special effects in these projects as they are kind of documentary on my raft trip down the Colorado in 1995 updated with films of two friends done 2011 and 2013. The only effects used are Cross dissolve and the Slide push one twice in the project for the last one. I use otherwise the default controls of scale and opacity if necessary. Soundwise, my tracks are declared 5.1 and used in conjunction with Audition CC (I've been a user of this last program for many years since it's creation by Syntrillium under the name CoolEdit Pro before Adobe acquired it!)
May I add that I'm not a novice with computers although an old froggy of 73!LOL! I began using computers in 1972 besides my job of Financial Analyst. I developed software in APL+ for stocks buy and sell decision making and created in France the first financial database in 1978 I was considered at that time like a perfect crazy guy in my business, good to be put in an asylum!!!. Since then I must say I had a good laugh! Try to prevent a trader to use a computer and databases nowadays and you'll see the speed at which he will throw you out of the window!
C/I would probably have focused on just Media Encoder if possible but whats done is done. Maybe you did?
Yes you're right I sort of thought of Media encoder first, but revised my way of dealing with the problem thinking that may be the installation had not been done correctly although no problem occurred during the update. I always update one program at a time waiting it to be fully completed before clicking on the install button of the next one.
D/ about the two methods of uninstall.
You say "The cleaner tool removes the same directories as the standard uninstaller. However the uninstaller is definitely the preferred method as it is done in conjunction with OS and the registry versus scripts which don't. The cleaner tool is generally used when the standard uninstall method fails "
May I say I'm not sure this is the right way to do from the user viewpoint. It is misleading. I'm again neither a professional in development although I mentioned what I did when I was not retired, and not a professional in Video editing etc.. I just address the problem from the user's point of view. If Adobe thinks that the Management panel solution is the best solution to have all the files eliminated let's stick to it. In fact one can see by using the CCleaner program that it does not eliminate all the register's problems after having uninstalled a program. So perhaps then it is justified to use also the Adobe CC Cleaner device. Then may I suggest that the phrasing of the step 3 be changed to make the user understand its real purpose. From what you say one induces that they are complementary. This should be perfectly clear in the user's brain.  When I tried to find answers to my problems on the forums it showed many times that people did not really understand what would happen, how the device was going to work. That's why I insisted in my question on the "precise, yes or no " etc.. answers required. I can dedicate time to such questioning, I doubt a professional having to deliver a final product under contract has time to make hypothesis on this matter if it occurs to him such mishaps....

Yes I use the default format proposed by Media encoder H.264  preset : Match source high bitrate which matches my project's settings. It worked three times before the update without an hitch. Why should not it go on like that?
The encoded files are saved either on the driver of the project file, or on the E external driver to make sure I do not erase the final encoded file by mistake. Poirot's little grey cells are a little bit rusty nowadays!
I had no problems before the update by working like that.
I did not try a different codec before the last event which is the impossibility of using my MP4 clips. By the way the projects contain also AVI uncompressed (codec UYVY) files (My quicktime version is also updated) and the native files of my Canon Legria AVCHD camera (AVC format) and  I used the AVI uncompressed format because I wanted to derush my analog files to eliminate any shots which were of poor quality. I use for this a small software: AVI Cutty which works only with AVI uncompressed files. So I used Media Encoder to pre encode my analog files in this format first; It separate automatically my videos in clips more or less corresponding to scenes. Again I had no problem since I began to use Adobe software more than a year ago with CS5.5 and then with CC 2014 since last September as a yearly subscriber.
Both projects have the same problem.
I checked the Windows task manager while encoding and I observed this:
a/ the crash occurs randomly in time.
b/ it seems that each time the encoding passes on a cross dissolve section (I'm not certain of that it can be also the changes in the curves RGB effects settings from one clip to the other.) the CPU usage curve reaches a peak around 95 to nearly 100%. I suppose the crash occurs when the 100%+ is reached.
c/I've checked my system driver's integrity, there is no problem here. I did the same for the memory which is ok too.
d/ No I did put the question on other forums because I did not find the right place to put it.
I do my best not to pollute other forums with non related questions.
e/ As for the recognition of the MP4 files, other programs like the Windows mediaplayer recognize them so it's not a question of corrupted files.
f/ I've just checked with the reinstalled media encoder. I did not re-encode but I do not get any more messages that the MP4 format is not recognized! Thank god! Remains to test the re-encoding itself and PP when the installation is over.
Well I hope this long answer gives you a better idea of what is going on. I'm finishing right now the re installation of PP AE Media encoder and Audition and will come back to you with the results.
    Thanks again

  • How to understand the logic of existing code

    Hi friends
I am new to java and I got the job in a company. Now they give me task to complete which use existing api developed by sr developers. Now my question is how can i understant such a large project with almost 200000 line of code.
It is web based project and using jsp and java mainly
Can anybody suggest me how can I understand it so that I can use this api and develop new code
    Thanks

Use the javadoc tool to create documentation for the code.
Read the resulting documentation. Even if the senior developers didn't add any Javadoc comments (in which case, they're morons, despite being "senior"), it would be helpful just to see what the methods and classes are. In particular, look at the interfaces in the code. In well-crafted code, you get a good bird's-eye-view of the structure by looking at the interfaces and the relationships between them (in my opinion).
It's possible that the code is simply crap, in which case, you're in for a long hard slog my friend.

  • Any way to temporarily ignore smart guides while using the pen tool?

I'm having a hate and love relationship with Smart Guides. When I want them they're bad; when I don't they're good.
While trying to do some things with the pen tool, I am frequently faced with the smart guides snapping my tool around without my wanting it snapped. I'm not really that good with the pen tool yet, so it's making an uphill climb even harder when they interfere.
Now I know that I can disable smart guides by doing Ctrl-U, but this has the side effect of releasing my pen from the current curve I'm working on. When I click the end of that curve to start where I left off it changes the anchor to a corner instead of curve and messes up what I was going on. This wouldn't be such a problem except that I sometimes want the guides while I'm still on the same curve so I don't want to fully disable them as I'm working and then have to re-enable to fix a spot, know what I mean?
So, is there a key I can hold down to temporarily turn disable smart guides or ignore them in some way? I've hit quite a few keys trying this out so I'm guessing no. This probably indicates I just need to improve my skill to learn how to work with this best.

At least up to Illustrator 13, there is a trick or rather a lousy hack that involves the Snap to Grid command and its talent to temporarily disable any Smart Guides functionality. The following has to be prepared in case you're going to execute the hack as an action:
    1. In the Actions Palette, create a new Action set. Call it 'Disable Smart Guides'.
    2. Within the Action set, create a new action. Call it 'Disable Smart Guides', assign an F-key to the action, let's say F3, and hit Enter.
    3. In the Actions Palette menu, select the Insert Menu Item command and go to View > Snap to Grid
    4. Stop recording the action
    5. Go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid
    6. In the Gridline Every text box, enter 0,01 mm. It's the minimum value you can set here.
    7. In the Subdivisions text box, enter 1000, the max. value accepted here.
Now, take any document, turn on Smart Guides, make sure Snap to Grid is turned off, and start drawing a path. Hit F3 and continue drawing the path. Hit F3 again as soon as you need your Smart Guides again.
As you can see, after hitting F3 to enable Snap to Grid, the path will not be interrupted when placing the next point. And as you've got a kind of microscopic Grid settings, Snap to Grid has almost no influence on where the points are placed. In fact, it still snaps, but due to the absurd Grid settings it's rather negligible.
This palpable workaround was originally invented by a young lady located around Edmonton in Canada.
