Function Airport Express audio over speakers Features

I am having trouble with my Airport Extreme Base station (AEBS) and Airport Express (AE) and setting them up to play audio over powered speakers or stereo.
Any information would be helpful, as at this point It looks like I will be returning the AE to Apple.
The AE is set up by having it join an existing network, with a AEBS 802.11n as the main base.
Problems:
With iTunes, the play is sporadic and (as if a signal is being lost) and usually stops playing after a few minutes.
The distance between devices is less than 10 feet.
The play was less choppy by setting up the AE to receive directly from my laptop with no AEBS in between. However it appears to me that you are only able to be com=nnected to one wireless device at a time. In other words, I can be connected to the AEBS and internet, or be connected to the AE, but not both, unless they are set up as being server and client in same WDS.
I did try the Air Foil, and although it did play from other applications like Real player, it did nothing for the signal apparently cutting in and out. Its video player did not function at all, synchronized or not. It did play audio from iTnune downloaded video through Quicktime, but un synchronized.
My conclusion thus far is that either the AE I have is defective, or it simply is not capable of performing as advertised.
I am looking to hear if which of these scenarios is the more likely.
Not to rule out that I have some how set it up incorrectly, in which case correct instructions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dan

Thanks for the information.
I do wish it was simpler to get clear information about the real world efficacy of products. Before discussion forum, I asked 3 One to One people about how the AE would perform and phone support about what problem was.
I have determined that with my computer being closer to AEBS, the signal is lost less (and is acceptable) than when it is further away. It is interesting that in both instances the distance of computer from AEBS, is far less than the AEBS is from AE.
My 867 is starting to fall apart (literally many cracks developing) so I am looking at newer macbook pros. I am wondering, Is the performance of the airport card better at some point in the model progression of macbooks?

    Hi roquinman,
    Hows it going?
I think your may be looking for a program like airfoil. It will let you send any audio from your computer to an airport express. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/audio/airfoil.html

Hello, I have Iphone 5 with Itunes music, airport express, 2 stereo speakers. What else do I need to hear music on the speakers?

    Hello ricsch,
It sounds like you want to setup your Airport Express to Airplay music from your iPhone 5.  I found an article with steps to help you get this setup:
Connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network, exclusively for iTunes music
AirPort Express used exclusively for AirPlay by setting it up in Client Mode.
Choose this configuration if the computer containing your iTunes library may be out of direct range of the AirPort Express, but is within range of the Wi-Fi network.
    How to Set It Up
Connect your AirPort Express to your home stereo or powered speakers.
From your computer, join the wireless network. Use the AirPort status menu in the menu bar on a Mac. On a Windows-based computer, hold the pointer over the wireless connection icon until you see your AirPort network name (SSID), and choose it from the list if there are multiple networks available. Enter the network password, if necessary.
Open iTunes on your computer and choose the AirPort Express(es) you wish to stream music through from the speakers pop-up menu in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window.
I also recommend reviewing the sections titled "Some things you should know about AirPort Express with AirPlay" and "Things to consider before you begin" in the full article:

Using Airport Express for External speakers and Apple TV.  When I'm on MAC computer adn using internet sound from Internet does not go through external speakers.  Instead it comes out of Mac computer speaker.  Why?

As far as I know, the Airport Express only transmits sounds via Itunes. So every other sound (internet, but also incoming mail) will be coming out of your mac instead of your external speakers.

  • HT4628 Intermittent reception when streaming music via Airport Extreme and Airport Express to powered speakers. Is this a problem with the Extreme?

i get intermittent reception when I stream music from I Tunes via Airport Extreme and Airport Express to powered speakers. I Tunes continues to play uninterupted on the Mac.  The problem does not lie with the Express as it occurs on both of my 2 Express at the same time. is this a problem with the Extreme?

Well, repying to my own post... Might have found the solution: I tried to do the same with a Macbook Pro 2010 using the very same setup. And it worked perfectly! No freeze, no nothing.
    One explanation I see:
my iMac is dating back to May 2007, a Core 2 Duo 2,16Ghz with 2 Go of RAM.
So the computer's characteristics (or the Wifi component or the combination of all of this) might be not robust enough to allow streaming to those 2 devices...
    Anyone's got anything to add?

  • Streaming itunes audio via airport express to TV speakers

Using imac, itunes and airport express.
I am trying to utilize tv audio component to play music as remote speaker using itunes and airport express.
With the tv on and approriate component selected - no sound. If I turn off TV and then back on - I get about 3 seconds of music via airport exp connection then silent.
    Any suggestions?

I have connected airex to a sony mfm-ht205 lcd tv/display. I have used the airex monster cables stereo to dual-rca connectors to connect to tv.
The tv has 2 video and 1 component set of jacks. Each of these has audio red/white right/left jacks for audio cords (presumably the dual end of monster cable).
With tv off and airex connected, when I turn tv on I get music from itunes (via airex) on tv speakers for about 3 seconds then nothing.
    Thanks for response.

  • Safari Compatibility with airport express and remote speakers.

Is there a good reason why Safari shouldn't broadcast sound to remote speakers through Airport Express in the same way that ITunes does. I'm thinking specifically about my Netflix addiction and that I always have to plug directly into a pair of HK speakers rather than play remotely over my whole home audio. I will restrain my capitalist conspiracy theories for now....any thoughts?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the forums!
Netflix haven't updated to comply with Safari 5 yet, but in the meantime they offer the following solution:

  • When playing iTunes from 2006 MacBook via Airport Express remote stereo speakers, the music keeps dropping in and out

I've tried hours and a trip to the Apple Store to resolve this problem, and no luck so far.
We have two Airport Expresses -- one is an older "g" version (from 2006), one is a newer "n" version (a couple of years old).
We have one older MacBook (from June 2006) (so it can only use "g" wireless and also cannot be upgraded to OS X 10.7 "Lion").
We have one MacBook Air and an iMac (both less than a year old), an iPad (about 2 months old), and a recently acquired AppleTV (in the past few weeks).
We also have two iPhones that do use our local wireless network on occassion.
We have stereo speakers that are currently connected into one of the Airport Expresses.
For years (until the past few weeks) I played music from iTunes on my first generation MacBook to the speakers with no problems (using the older "g" Airport Express).  Recently, however, when playing music remotely over the speakers we have gotten fairly regular (though at random intervals) drops of the music in and out (drops are for a second or two each).  So far, here's what we've tried to do:
    (1)     Went to the Apple Store, where they thought the problem might be compatability between the g and n equipment in our house.  They suggested that we get an Airport Extreme and use that as the base so that 2.5 GHz and 5 GHz networks could each be set up, allowing the two systems to play nicely.  Spent a couple of hours setting everything up.  No dice.
    (2)     The skipping happens even when (a) I turn off the Apple TV; and/or (b) turn off the older Airport Express and just use the Extreme and the "n" Express (with the "n" Express as the connection to the stereo).
    (3)      When I have the wireless network drop-down menu selected on my MacBook, the skipping occurs immediately after the computer is "looking for networks" (as shown at the top of the menu).  The computer does this at random intervals on a regular basis.  The skipping, however, will occur even if the menu is not selected.
    (4)     Here's the weirdest part.  The skipping has even occured when playing iTunes from our newish iMac, with the older MacBook shut down, with the older Airport Express shut down.  In this case, the skipping only appears to occur when we have the wireless network drop-down menu selected and again, it occurs when the computer is "looking for networks" which occurs at random intervals.  In this situation, the skipping only seems to occur when the menu is selected.
At this point, if I can't find another solution, I'm going to return the Airport Extreme, and just give up playing music over our stereo speakers from the MacBook (and instead transfer music to the iMac and play from it).  But I thought I'd try a last-ditch effort to ask for help to see if anyone could figure out what might be causing the problem.  I would chalk it up to the problems of using my old "g" network MacBook on a newer "n" system (though I'm not about to spend $1K+ to upgrade my laptop just for this), but for (4) above, which seems to indicate something else is going on.
Any help would be most appreciated!

Unfortunately, your description of the problem and the placement of both your main and AirPort Express routers does lend itself to believe the problem is most likely Wi-Fi interference. If it isn't the microwave or portable phones, it could be obstacles like walls between the routers that may be preventing the stream from consistently reaching the Express.
In your configuration, the stream will first travel to the main router, and then, from the main router to the AirPort Express. If, for example, you started the stream in the same room as the Express, that stream would have to travel across several rooms at least twice.

  • Airplay Station OR Airport Express + audio câble?

    Hi,
If i buy an Airplay Audio Station, will I need an Airport Express to broadcast music?
    Thanks

The only base station with dial-up capability (in addition to traditional ethernet equipped modem capability) is the AirPort Extreme Base Station w/modem. Check the Apple Store to look over the details, and make sure you are looking at the AEBS with the modem (there is also a version without a dial-up modem which will not work in your application).

  • Airport Express Audio Port Blocked?

Hello all, I'm setting up my Airport Express to play music through my speakers. I've previously done this with no problems, but when I've come to set it up again, this time, the audio port isn't deep enough for the audio jack to fit in.
The jack is a standard 3.5mm, and has been used with this Airport Express before.
The port doesn't appear to be blocked (I can see the led at the bottom).
There are no rattles and the Airport Express has been well looked after.
Any idea what could possibly be causing this?
    Cheers,
    Ollie.

I have had a word with my housemates, it would appear that one of them accidently snapped off the tip of a audio jack.
How would I go about removing this? Is there an easy way to open the Airport Express? or should I take it to the apple store?

  • Airport express - audio dropping

i'm using airport express for wireless internet and to play audio through a pair of powered speakers. it has worked fine in the past but lately has been dropping the audio constantly. i'm playing music through itunes and the track just stops, and the audio ceases. i'm only about 1 meter away from the airport.
    any ideas? thanks!

Same problem here. The audio drops seem to directly correlate with any and all web activity in Safari. Every time a new page has to load, Airport Express cuts out. I've had Airport Express (n) for a few months and only recently did this start happening.

  • Airport Express to bathroom speakers

    Hi There,
I am looking to use my ipad to stream live radio music to wall mount speakers in my shower.
Here is the spec of the speakers I am thinking of getting:
    http://www.aquabrass.com/sites/default/files/installation/SKS01_englishinstall.p df
As you can see, there is a docking station for any mp3 player but instead I am thinking of using Airport Express to connect to the speakers...have Airport Express join a wireless network and then subsquently get ipad to join the same network so the music gets sent to Airport Express through to the speakers.
Do you think this can be done?
    Thanks,
    Karun

Yes. You will use its 3.5 mm analog audio input port:

  • AirPort Express & Bose Companion Speakers w/ laptop - how do I???

What audio cable input do I need to buy to attach the Bose Companion (three speakers) to my Airport Express for wireless sound? (Macbook pro) This is possible right?
    Needing to learn more consumer
    Thanks
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Not sure about the speaker system but from what I read they are PRIMARILY to be connected to the computer with an additional input for auxilliary inputs. The express will work with pretty much any speakers provided that they have their own power. The express provides an output (mini jack or mini optical) to be input to a powered speaker system. It will not provide the power to the speakers. I would guess that the Companion does plug directly into an AC outlet for power and you could use the Y cable (probably a mini Y but I am unfamiliar with the aux inputs on the Companion- they could use RCA type) and it should work UNLESS the Bose requires a computer to choose the input. Hope this helps but I'm not really a Bose fan - any discussion that may raise is better posted elsewhere.

  • Airport Express audio: total washout?

I just got a new Airport Extreme base station (I had previously been using a Linksys wireless router) and Airport Express and I'm having a very negative experience trying to use the latter with iTunes (which was the main purpose of buying it in the first place).
The audio streaming from iTunes to the Airport Express doesn't play continuously. Instead, I get a few seconds of audio, followed by a few seconds of silence, followed by a few seconds of audio, and so on. It drives me nuts. When I first set everything up, it seemed to work more or less OK for the first few minutes, but then this problem cropped up and has only been getting worse -- now I'm lucky if I get 5 seconds of uninterrupted audio. When the audio drops out, the timer on iTunes stops advancing during the silence, then starts moving again when the audio restarts.
    Now the tech details:
*I'm seeing this problem from both of my computers: an OS X G5 running 10.4.3 which is connected to the Airport Extreme base station via Ethernet and a Windows XP machine connecting to the network via wireless. Both are using the latest version of iTunes.
*I'm using WPA authentication on my network, and allowing both B and G connections.
*I've updated the firmware for both the base station and the Airport Express with the updates that were released today (1/4/06).
    Anyone have any ideas?

Ok ... I retract my comment about 6.3. I'm not sure what happened but it eventually settled down. I did not have wireless phone or microwave operating when it happened, but I was using Bluetooth when it started (just in case that has an effect) but even after I stopped using Bluetooth, the audio was cutting out every few seconds.

  • Airport Express Audio Via Home Stereo

    Hi,
Ive got my Airport Express to play iTunes through my hifi system (after lots of swearing and stuff), but im really disappointed to see it doesnt seem I can play any other audio - for example if im watching tv online etc/any audio not coming for iTunes.
Does anyone know if and how I can get other audio from my laptop to play through my stereo via airport express?

Hello andygunner. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Does anyone know if and how I can get other audio from my laptop to play through my stereo via airport express?
Yes. You will need to use a third-party application, like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil, to play audio sources other than iTunes through your AirPort Express.
