Function key defaults are not working
I've ran into an issue where the default function keys no longer work. The F1 key for instance does not decrease my brightness, nor does F12 increase my volume. All of the function keys will produce a "thump" sound from the Macbook Air, like I've typed a bad keystroke, or an invalid keystroke for a text field.
What I've done:
1. The "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is Unchecked in System Prefs
2. Rebooted, and cold booted many times
3. I've reset PRAM and SMC many times (probably 10 each)
4. I've clean installed OSX Mavericks and the stock install shows the same symptoms.
I'm hesitant to believe this to be a hardware issue because the keys themselves will work if I manually set an action for them (a custom shortcut to open an application for instance).
Has anyone else seen a similar problem or know of any other things I can try?
See if a Safe Mode boot helps.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () drop down menu then try the keyboard.

I have a macbook pro with OSX Mavericks 10.9.5 and some keys randomly are not working. Specifically, the enter/return button, the "p", "0", ";", and all the function keys. What's really weird is that happens randomly. I've never spilled anything on it, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to fix this. Can anyone help? of course this happened after my warranty expired.
**update**
I don't know if this will help someone but I am posting this for that purpose. In the past when I first had this problem, I'd read a post somewhere (sorry, long ago, don't have the link) where an individual was having the same problem and they stated that when the MBP got heated, that's when the keys would stop working, and they went into the MBP and jiggle some stuff around (a specific wire, I'm not electronically inclined so I know NOT of what they spake!). Well I didn't want to do that but it always stuck in the back of my mind. I had given up, really, and was planning to take my MBP to the apple store. But by chance one night I left my MBP on the floor where it's cool, and when I turned it on, the problem went - poof! It seems there was some validity to the post that spoke about heat, because my problems started when I would stream foreign dramas on my MBP for hours at night, and I would hear the fan going off all the time, and in the mornings, my "p", "enter", "0", ";", and all the function keys would stop working.
So, maybe try keeping the MBP in a cool place when it's off. Since I've started doing this overnight every night (keeping it on the cool floor, out of reach of any big feet), I have not had a single problem with my keyboard.
Hopefully this might help someone. -

I would do the reset direction first then do the update drives for it. To see if that fixes the issue. If it doesn't then yout computer needs repairing. frrw. -
Keys (MJU) are not working after repair
Hello,
I've sent my MBP early 2011 for motherboard replacement, as affected model.
After repair service inform me some keys are not working anymore (MJU), thay asked me 290 euros for repair
What should I do? Anyone else had the same problem?I never managed to get the keys to work again, but maybe I haven't been holding them long enough.
I have read somewhere that Apple ask for more than 300€ (USD 400) to change the keyboard, so I am considering opening myself my Crapple Crapbook Pro and change it myself.
I am quite ****** actually. A keyboard shouldn't die like this with no reason less than 3 years later. My Powerbook G4 that I used a lot much more than the Macbook is still working fine. -
Functions (back & stop ) are not working in production environment
Hi All ...
Some functions (back and stop) are not working in production environment, where as those functions are working in QA testing environement..please answer.. what could be the reasons for not working some functions
in production environement.
Regards,,
KrishnaHi,
Based on the error message, it is related to the item in your production environment, then the workflow will occur exception.
As your workflow worked perfectly in your other environments, I suggest you can check if some item has is valid in the document library.
You can try to use Fiddler to track the web request and find in which item the workflow occurs exception.
Here are some detailed articles for your reference:

Some key commands are not working
I have a 2010 MacBook Pro running OS 10.10.2.
When I use cmd/shift/4, nothing happens. However, these keys work individually. Similarly, in Pages, hitting cmd/shift/> will zoom the content in the window, but cmd/shift/< will not zoom back out. I've check my keyboard settings and all of the keys are mapped correctly and set to default settings. None of them seem stuck down.
Does anyone have any ideas of other things I can check to restore these functions? Thanks!Yes, I've done this already. It looks just like your image.
I rebooted, hoping that would fix it and it did not. Also, this started before I loaded Yosemite and I was hoping loading it might fix the problem if it was something simple like that.
I checked the apps tab also (I have no apps) but the only one on there was the "show help menu" button and the keys listed for it are not replacing any other commands. -
Function keys F1 - F10 not working in any case
Hello, I've a problem with my MacBook Pro 15" 10.4.11. Function keys f1-f10 don't work for brightness, volume etc. I remember that the bloc num F6 key became light green when pressed. Now it seems stuck and doesn't work at all. Then f12 activate dashboard and f11 exposeé. I tried everything, it's not a system pref issue....Help!!!
Thank you a lot!So with the room lights off, after hitting F10 to bring the keyboard backlight up, F9 does not bring it down?
One more thing to try is System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts tab and click the Restore Defaults button, in case some remapping was done.
If the answer to the first question is yes, and the suggestion above doesn't help, it's starting to sound like a hardware problem.
You can test that by doing the following: System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard tab and check the box to "Use F1...". Then, go to System Preferences > International > Input Menu tab, and check the box next to Keyboard Viewer. A flag will appear in the menu bar, click that and select Show Keyboard Viewer, which brings up a keyboard image that shows keystrokes. See if the Fkeys flash when pressed (note that with the Use F1... box unchecked, they won't flash). -
How do I fix keys that are not working?
Some of my keys are no longer working and I am wondering if it is possible to fix this without having to visit an apple store?
The keys are 8, F8, and –reecejack wrote:
No spill, however I think it may have been caused by steam. I hope the vacuuming/blowing air works
Liquid damage (accidental damage) is not covered under Apple's standard 1 year warranty or Apple Care.
NOTE: If you are out of warranty and purchased the computer with a credit card, discuss the warranty issue with the credit card company which you purchased the computer with. They are the only ones who can at this point cover the computer after it goes out of warranty with the manufacturer (Apple).
If you have Homeowners insurance, place a claim with them. -
the keys 5tg and b do not always work. Ideas?
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

All of a sudden, I cannot "save as other" or "save" I cannot open a new file. I can print. I can use feature "get document signed". When I click on any of those non-working features, nothing happens. In save as other, the drop down menu opens but if I click on something, nothing happens.
I fixed it somehow.

Crtl+C, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+X, Tab, and arrow keys do not work at all in FF4.0b13 and later. I am not sure about earlier versions as this is the first version I have tried.
I found this helpful article (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1381) and worked my way through the section "Some keys don't work as expected".
All the following functions/settings are disabled or turned off:
Text to speech / Speak selected text when the key is pressed
Slow Keys
Mouse Keys.
The keyboard viewer just confirms my list of keys that are not working.
Starting in safe mode makes no difference; nor does booting from the Mac OS X Install Disc and running Terminal from the Utilities menu. The same keys as before fail to work.
This seems to confirm that it's a hardware issue. Anyone have any suggestions? -
Some keys are not working of my laptop lz801pa#
Hi
Recently I installed Windows 8.1 on my laptop (hp pavilion dv6 6115tx entertainment notebook) - lz801pa
Then I installed Visual studio 2013. everything was working perfectly then.
I guess when I changed keyboard option in visual studio to C# 2005, after that some of the keys stopped working.
I also reset that option to default, but the issue is still there.
Down & right arrow keys, right arrow key of num pad, 1-5,8,9,0 keys in the first row(up above qwerty keys row) are not working.
I am able to press indivisually tab & alt, but alt+tab combination is not able to use for switching between windows/apps.
Please help me.Hello Rdmusale,
I understand that some of the keys are not working on your notebook computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!

My lenovo ideapad G570 some keys are not working

Am using Lenovo ideapad G570
from last 2months in my laptop some keys not working (N,B,Left,Right,Up Arrow and Space bar)
Kindly Suggest me For resolving the issue.hi vickydy,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
First make sure this is a hardware concern.
Run an Onscreen Keyboard, by Pressing (Windows key + R) then type in OSK then hit enter
Now on your onscreen Keyboard click on the keys that are not working see if they responding with the Onscreen keyboard.
If the keys responded using the Onscreen Keyboard, Then your Keyboard hardware is bad.
Either you call Technical Support to have them repair the unit in / out of warranty repair OR Ask them where to get the part for it and have the keyboard replaced.
Hope this helps
Cheers!

Function keys are not working correctly
I've been looking all over the various threads and I can't find an answer that solves my problem.
Here are the details:
I bought the computer in the U.S. where I live.
I have a iMac 2.4GHz intel Core 2 Duo EMC 2133 with a 20" screen. Bought it new in February 2008.
I have Mac OS X 10.5.8 (I am waiting for my order for OS Snow Leopard to come in!!)
I have been using a wireless mouse and Keyboard (Love not having cords!)
Recently, my wireless keyboard got a short and quit working. I went down to the apple store and got a new wireless keyboard.
I had the computer with me at the genius bar so, yes, the apple employee saw exactly what I have.
I took it all home got the thing all put back together and got the new keyboard paired up and working with the computer.
Here are the problems:
Went to go use the function keys while using iTunes and found they weren't working properly. The F10, F11 and F12 do not control the volume of sound as the keyboard indicates they would, they instead activate dashboard, spaces, and application windows.
Following the advice of other threads, I looked over in the system preferences and made sure the "Use all F1, F2 etc." box was unchecked (it was unchecked), things still didn't work.
I tried the fn key but it appears to not work at all it has no effect on the functioning of the function keys.
I went under keyboard shortcuts in system preferences and found the F10, F11 and F12 keys, it confirms that those keys control spaces, dashboard and application windows as they are performing but shows no options to either reassign to volume control (as marked on the keyboard) or make the fn key work.
I've gone back and forth trying various combinations of checked and unchecked boxes to see if anything would work, so far I've come up with nothing.
A couple more important or interesting facts:
Yes I have turned off and taken the batteries out of the old keyboard. My bluetooth connection currently shows it as disconnected.
I have restarted the computer.
One thing I find odd; when I go under preferences and go to Keyboard and Mouse when I go under the section "Bluetooth" it shows Bluetooth mouse with the name of the mouse and the battery level. BUT nothing is showing up under bluetooth Keyboard, I can't figure out how to change this and don't know if it is contributing to the problem.
When I go under the bluetooth logo on the top bar I find the mouse and both keyboards referenced, the old keyboard is shown as disconnected and the other two are connected. I have tried to update the device's name but it doesn't seem to let me.
I have double clicked on the device under bluetooth and it shows the new keyboard as discoverable, paired and connected. Hence, I am using the new keyboard to write this inquiry.
Please, any assistance would be of great help. I have tried to be thorough in order help narrow the possible problem. Thanks!!Hendry
Just thought I'd let you know. Our suspicions were correct, it was the OS. After I installed Snow Leopard (10.6.8) all the problems were corrected. I also updated the RAM from 1 gb to 6 gb. The mac is working all around better. Sorry it took so long to get back to everyone. My superdrive had pooped out. Rather than replace it I got an external drive from OWC connected with firewire 800. So far everything is running very well, as far as I can tell this external drive is better than the original superdrive. My superdrive has always acted funny, infact I returned the first mac I got after a week because its superdrive was also malfunctioning. Anyway, all that to say everything seems to be fully functioning again.
