Function key seems to be locked

My volume and brightness controls used to work by pressing the F1-F5 key, but now I have to press fn+F1-51. If I just press the F1-F5, it does what fn+F1-F5 used to do.
I have no idea how to make it go back to the way it was. Can anyone help?

cant believe i didnt see this before
1) go into your system preferences
2) go into keyboard
3) unclick the box that says "use the F1-F12 keys to control software features"

The new Apple extended keyboard has those functions already programmed in. This is from the advertising pitch:
It also has function keys for one-touch access to a variety of Mac features such as screen brightness, volume, eject, play/pause, fast-forward and rewind, Mission Control, and Launchpad.
The short answer to your question is that keys are wired differently on different keyboards.
No, it depends on the setting chosen in Keyboard Preferences. (see my earlier post)

  • E71 Function Key

Hello everyone.. I just owned E71 for a week.. I noticed just now that the function key in this case the function key at my E71 is quite different from the others key.. All of you E71 owners know function key rite.. It's the one at bottom left.. It's the one to combine with the left softkey to lock and unlock keypad..
What the difference is that my function key seem lighter to push.. It has a slack somehow.. While the other keys is kinda rigid to push..
Is it because the function key "work" harder than other keys?
You need to push it frequently everytime you lock and unlock keypad.. And you need to keep pushing it to enter number and any other character in the upper key display just like shift key in keyboard when writing messages..
Or it's because my keypad/E71 that defect?

Well it's turn out that my E71 keypad that had problem..
There is no such thing such as special design function key..
What makes my function key become "special" because my "under" part of the keypad is not properly fixed at place.. It's position is a little down..
I found out this by my own experiment by carefully massaging the function key "up" so the under part of the function key back to it's place.. Making it rigid again to push just like the other keys..
So what lessons do I had from this problem :
    1. Carefully check the product when buying.. Ask for replacement as quickly as possible if there are any defect..
    2. Always asks for second, third, fourth and so on opinions.. Don't take conclusion too early in my case the first opinion I had is from technician at Nokia Care that said my phone was "special design".. haha

  • How to define a keyboard shortcut that includes a function key?

I was trying to set up a keyboard shortcut for a Service in Sys.Prefs -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts and discovered that if I attempt to use a function key as a part of the shortcut that it disappears out of the key entry field as soon I click off the item. The keys I press (including an "F#" representing the function key that I've pressed) show up briefly in the field but then go away.
Entering keystrokes that do not include a function key seem to work fine.
Function keys are used as a part of many of the default keyboard shortcuts. So is there maybe a trick for entering a function key in the pref pane as part of a user defined shortcut that I just don't know about? Or is this maybe a bug in the pref pane? Or any other explanation for what I'm seeing?
This is on a Snow Leopard 10.6.3 machine.
    Thanks,

Function keys are regular keystrokes, just like for letters, numbers, or punctuation marks. Thus, just like the others, you can use them only by themselves or in combination with modifier keys (shift, command, control, & option) in keyboard shortcuts.
IOW, a valid shortcut would be F4 or command + F4 but not F4 + any regular key.
It's good to know that regular keys are not allowed with function keys, but it doesn't explain the problem. I initially tried using command + various function keys and when that wouldn't "stick" I tried just various function keys which also wouldn't work.
And like I said... it looks like it's going to accept the key(s) I press by showing the textual representation of the key in the key field (such as "F4" or "F5") but as soon as I click outside the text field it vanishes.
The problem was mentioned to me by another person and I was able to duplicate it, so it's not just me or my machine. Just out of curiosity, does it work for you?

  • No function key with apple wireless keyboard

I recently purchased an Apple Wireless Keyboard. I have it working just fine with my macbook pro, and want to use keyboard special characters as a mouse because I'll be using my old laptop as a TV entertainment computer. The only problem is that the function key seems to not exist, which is crucial in order to use special keys as mouse movement keys. If I bring up the keyboard viewer and type with the wireless keyboard, the keyboard viewer shows the keyboard layout without a funciton key. I would expect something like this with a non-apple peripheral, but not a standard apple keyboard. What must be done to enable or have all of the keyboard's keys, function key in particular, recognized?
BTW - I did apply the firmware update for the keyboard, but to no avail.

  • T430s - Misaligned function keys?

    Hi folks,
I have a quick question for T430/T430s owners. I recently received a new T430s, and it all looks great so far, except that the top row of function keys seem to be misaligned.
I've seen other posts say that light leaks out from under the function keys, and that the function keys seem raised a little bit from the other keys on the keyboard. Both of those things are true of my keyboard, but that wouldn't particularly bother me.
What's strange about mine is that that the row of function keys is actually angled backwards---so that the front lip of the keys is higher than the back. If I hold the keyboard at eye level and look across from the side it's very noticeable.
Are other people's keyboards like this too, or does mine have some extra special function key weirdness?! If that's just how they are, I'm sure I'll get used to it, but I thought I should check and make sure it isn't a fault.
    Thanks,
    James

there are quite lot of variables that may cause the function row to bend backwards, it is probably not an intrinsic design but rather something that happened as the result of production process they used to produce the keyboard.
You're probably right. My T430s has Fkeys that are aligned flat with the body. However my keyboard also has fit/finish issues such as a 2mm gap behind the power/audio button strip, and some areas are a bit loose and flex while typing. Maybe Lenovo are now using some quick and dirty methods (like bending or offsetting) to make keyboards fit better.

  • Persistently lock function keys!?

    Hello,
I would like to persistently lock the function keys at my E531 laptop.
I know you can switch between function keys and multimedia functions by setting FnLock (Fn+ESC), but unfortunately this setting is volatile: everytime I restart the system (even from power saving mode), it is lost and the keys default to multimedia again.
Using this laptop only for "real work", with software that extensively uses the function keys, this is really getting on my nerves...
Is there any way to persistently lock the function keys to generate F1..F12 keycodes?
If I'd ever need the multimedia functions, I'll luckily hold down the Fn key before...
    OS is Windows 8.1.
    Thanks for any help,

In addition to the suggestions Mithunr has made, I would ask if you are running the preload?
Could you also check to see that the hotkey drivers are installed, especially if you have done a reload of the system.

  • I am using Firefox for Mac (v 3.6.11, Mac OSX 10.6.4) and need to use the Function keys (specificlaly Ctrl-F7) in a web application. I can't seem to get it to work the same as in Firefox on PC.

I am using a web application that requires the use of the F7 key. Actually, to be more precise, I need the functionality that you would get on a PC if you hit Ctrl-F7 while in this web application in Firefox. I have changed the Mac's settings to allow standard use of the function keys (rather things like volume up/down, etc.) However, when I try to use Ctrl-F7 it appears to be using the function that is built into Firefox browser rather than the web application running within Firefox. (FYI, nothing happens when I try Cmd-F7 or Alt/Option-F7 either).

  • Satellite L55-B5276 Function Key lock

I would like the function keys to default to F1-F12 rather than the video/playback/audio controls. I have looked around in the Toshiba utilities and have been unable to find something that would switch the default, like with my previous Satellite laptops. How do I accomplish this function?

  • Problem with function keys

Only the F11 and F12 keys on my PB G4 seem to do anything at present (Expose and Dashboard). Looking on this forum and others, I have tried to fix this by going to the Keyboard/Mouse section of System Prefs and turning on AND off the "use F1-F12 keys to control software prefs". Have tried using all buttons while holding down the fn key, with the software pref thing on and off, all to no avail. the Num lock key only works if i hold down fn, F6, and the letter key all at the same time. cannot find a way to turn Num lock on indefinitely.
My main problem is that I actually liked being able to adjust the brightness of my screen and my volume with the function keys. I honestly am not sure when this functionality was lost, I had mac laptops through work and personally, so I can't quite recall if my personal laptop was ever "right".
Could one of the software updates have messed up this functionality? I am living in a small town with no mac store nearby, so please help!
    thanks!

You know, I thought I was the only one with this problem. A few weeks ago, I noticed that my brightness keys on the keyboard "didn't work." I thought maybe it had to do with getting my LCD screen replaced at the Apple Store since they had to take out the keyboard and disassemble/reassemble the unit to do so.
But I think it is one of those new quirks with the 10.4.9 update.
For instance, you used to be able to eject CDs or DVDs on a whim just by pressing the eject key. Now, you have to hold it down for a few seconds before it will do so. This was--according to someone--done to prevent accidental ejection of discs. A delay of some sort.
Same with shutting down your computer via that similar key combo. You used to be able to do that in an instant, but now there is a delay.
Sure enough, at least on MY PowerBook, in order to adjust the brightness and/or volume, I have to hold down the keys on the keyboard for a few seconds before it will respond.
Before the 10.4.9 update, all you did was lightly tap on the keys and they would respond. I believe this is similar to the intentional delay Apple made (why? I don't know) in making CDs and DVDs not eject right away.
Try it. Hold down your brightness keys and it will work. But not if you merely tap on them like before. I think that is a good idea though. It was so easy to accidentally dim your screen all the way to black, before that.
If it doesn't work, then you may have a different problem. =(

  • HP Pavilion Laptop; Only Special Function Keys are Working

I got my first HP laptop, a HP Pavilion 17-e049wm Notebook, refurbished a few months ago when my original quit out. Until recently, I've been more than happy with its performance. However, a few weeks ago the keyboard started acting both weird and also not working. I'll try to provide as much information as I can, and thank you in advance for your assistance!
    Circumstances before the event:
-The night before, my keyboard worked one hundred percent fine. I played some games and went to sleep with it closed and hibernating like I always have. The next morning, I took it up with me to play music as I showered. Before I'm accused of water-damaging it, my laptop was very far from shower, so no direct water contact occured, and also we shower with the door open, so there was no build up of steam or humidity that could've done it that couldn't be present in any other situation. I knew that it worked that morning, as I must have logged in to play my music. After closing it and bringing it to my car (without drops or any other jarring), I learned a few hours later that my keyboard had stopped working.
-My house doesn't have internet and I havn't recently installed anything, so it's doubtful that some kind of software did it to me.
    What the keyboard does(n't do):
-Almost every key doesn't work. The letters, esc, enter, shifts, fn, numberpad, caps lock, etc. I've tried them each, and none work.
-There are two exclusions to the above statement:
-The 'special' function keys; All of the keys that share space with my function keys work fine. So my mute, pause, change display, brightness controls, help shortcut, airplane mode, etc. work. So everything from F1 to F12 work.
-Before anyone assumes that my fn key is stuck or something, the special part is the default. On my keyboard, you hold down the fn key to do the normal fn key functions (f11 skips to the next song, fn+f11 does fullsrceen).
-Also, I'm not sure if my 'normal' functions work. I tried holding fn on this USB keyboard and then the f# keys, but the 'special' function still is the one that works. However, as I have no control, I don't know if that would have happened anyways.
-The second exception, which makes me doubt that it is a hardware problem, is that if I hold 'X' and 'C' at the same time, the brightness lowers, as if I tapped my f2 key. Each of those do nothing on their own, but when pushed together, they act identical to the f2.
-Another thing is that my ported keyboard's caps lock indicator light still shines when either the USB or on-screen's caps lock keys are used.
    What I've tried:
-Turn it off and back on
-Turn it off, take out battery, hold the power button, wait, turn on with/without battery
    -Uninstall keyboard driver, restart
    -Summoning a demon
-Tried to update driver (can't, up-to-date)
-Check status through device manager (claims that it's running fine)
I've basically tried everything I could find that seemed relatively useful from browsing the forums, but it's on my third week keyboardless, nothing works, and I'm so tired of using my girlfriends pretty, sparkling and bedazzled, purple USB keyboard from her days in middle school. If nothing works, I'll have to resort to the system resets and lose applications and my files, which would be a mad bummer yo.
Thank you again for your help, internet.

    @cbowman08 ,
Hello and thank you so much for posting on the HP support forums. Now please I am not stating you have done anything wrong in any way.  This kind of thing happens all the time.
You do not need a bunch of steam to cause an issue with water for one thing.
Inside your notebook is a huge differential in temperature zones.  If you take a notebook into a shower room even if your water is slightly above room temp there is ample moisture in the air.
Air has to travel and if your notebook was on the counter and it is between your shower and the door, any moisture in the air gets to get heated way up and then gets to cool way down and gather on the little metal bits in your notebook.
It only takes one drop of water the size of a pin head to bridge a connection and cause a short.
I hope this is not the case.  I am hoping that the connection cable for your keyboard has come loose.
So to see if this is just a loose connection instead of a bit of moisture causing the issue here is a link to your maintenance guide,
    Maintenance and Service Guide
This will show you have to get your system apart to check they keyboard connection.
As well here is a link to how to gain access to the keyboard and its connection.
HP Pavilion 17 Replace Keyboard HDD SSD Ram New Model Laptop.
Check to make sure the keyboard cable didnt just come loose.  Very easy fix.  If it is connected and nothing is loose then you are looking at a replacement keyboard or if the board did get some moisture on it from condensation then you will need to have it sent in for repair.
If that is the case you will want to contact phone support for repair options.
