if you don't have those keys on your keyboard (laptop keyboards don't have them) you can not use them unless you remap some other key to work as one of those F-keys.
Thank You.

    Hello:
Function keys have to be programmed....before you ask, I do not do that or know how to do that.  You can change the way function keys behave:

  • Keyboard function keys F13-F19 on the numeric keyboard

I have the Apple numeric keyboard. Is there a possibility to assign functions to the function keys F13-F19? Thanks for any help, but please don't tell me to write a script:) I need rather simple solutions...

Thanks for the reply. But this does not seem to be possible. Under "keyboard shortcuts" (in my case in German "Tastaturkurzbefehle") there is no helpful option that allows to set up commands for the additional function keys (under OS X7.2).

  • Function Key F13

For years I've only used Shift/F13 for an Action in Photoshop (CS2) -- rotate 90 degrees anticlockwise. Today, F13, with or without Shift, suddenly takes a screenshot and puts .png files on my desktop. I have all Keystrokes switched off in System Prefs, and I've now even trashed Grab (I use Snapz Pro X or Screenflick anyway). I've repaired the Preferences, run TechTool Pro 4 over my discs, and restarted. Nothing makes any difference: F13 still takes a screenshot. What could make my iMac suddenly decide to do this?! BTW, I use a Logitech S530 cordless keyboard and mouse. I've added no new software, and haven't changed anything. NOTHING is set to use F13 apart from Photoshop. Can anyone help, please?

    @Dave -
Back to your original problem with your S 530 Mac Logitech Keyboard (and mouse combo - but I use a trackball and usually forget about that part) anyway....
I have primarily stuck with Tiger since the release of Leopard. Leopard has major issues. For everything good and new and innovative - there are just as many bad things with it. Otherwise Apple probably wouldn't have announced that Snow Leopard (10.6) is to be a Stability upgrade.
Anyway - I'm piping my 2 cents in as I have had the same problem recently.
I hvae had a primary install of Tiger with the Logitech S 530 Cordless White Mac Keyboard. It's a blast and I absolutely love the key response on it.
I also had a copy of Leopard running from an external FireWire Drive - mostly to check it out and wait for stuff to get Leopard compatible. Except that Leopard has proven to be problematic at best.
Was having this same exact problem on my FW Leo install. Except that I typically Map the Dashboard launch to F13. I was chalking the "forced Screenshot" up to yet more Leo issues. At this point I think it's a glitch in Logitech LCC software.
Recently my HD died inside my computer. Took it apart and upgraded the drive. Have spent the past week rebuilding and re-installing a fresh system of sorts.
This time out I decided to run Partitions - 'cause I still use Tiger for a few things and switching back and forth is no biggie. So I have Tiger on one Partition and Leo on a 2nd.
Runnin the latest 2.6 LCC for the S530 I think is the problem. After the OS install the first thing I always do is go thru and set User Prefs and settings throughout the OS. Then start installing 3rd party add-ons like LCC or Unsanity's Haxies or Growl etc... Well Dashboard via F13 was running just fine while I was tweaking and installing stuff. As I was jumping to it to monitor bandwidth and system processes via iStat Pro and also checking the weather for tomorrow.
The last thing I installed was LCC 2.6. Didn't think anything about it - went on doing other stuff and then needed to jump to Dashboard for 5 seconds. But no Dashboard - I hear a camera sound coming from my speakers. I try again and Screenshot after Screenshot ladning on the Desktop. I was doing a bunch of installs - not sure in what order - and decided to uninstall one at a time starting with LCC 2.6.
Then Test everything after each single uninstall. Sure enough - if I didn't regain accessing Dashboard via F13 as soon as I uninstalled LCC 2.6.
I went out to Logitech's website and dug around - not very organized and couldn not find the Product Page for the s530 within their site without going to Google and searching back into Logitech. Nobody specifically touched on the F13 Key issue - but Logitech posted that they are aware of issues pertaining to LCC and Leopard - even though they say that LCC v2.3.1 is compatible. Maybe it just barely functions. In between those 2 versions is 2.4. I dug around some more and found a copy of it and have installed it - but have yet to restart my computer to test if it works and maybe something Logitech tweaked in 2.6 broke.
I don't think this is a direct Apple problem - other than the fact that Apple tends to change and move things around within the OS from one version to the next Which tends to disrupt 3rd party add-ons. Then the 3rd parties have to go back and tweak their stuff to accommodate the new OS "design".
    I'll post something after I test v2.4.
PS if you uninstall the LCC you can use your keyboard just fine without it and like I said F-key mapping is regained. The Volume controls also work (up - down - mute). The Power Key works. Also the Play Controls (prev - next - play/ pause).
The Custom Mapped Keys don't work tho - Home - eMail - Spotlight - iTunes and iPhoto launch buttons.

  • Function keys F11 and higher not working as expected

Since I installed Leopard, my F11 through F15 keys act strange, the rest works OK. I use an external MS Comfort Curve keyboard with v6.2.1 (latest) of the Intellitype keyboard driver. I have switched off all keyboard shortcuts for function keys. I have set the System Preference to use the function keys as regular Function keys. Now the F11 is dead, the F12 is the eject, F13 through F15 are dead too. Switching the preference on or off only affects the F1 through F10 keys. There's no change for the F11 through F15 keys.
When I switch to Parallels 3 with Windows XP, the F11-key acts the same as the PrtScn (which is F13) key, the F12 key does nothing, F14 (ScrLk) and F15 (Pause/Break) are dead.
This IS annoying since I work on AS400 machines where you really need F11 and F12 + F23 (shift-F11) and F24 (shift-F12). Under Tiger, I did not have this problem - all settings worked as expected.

Software updates of all concerned programs ans OS's have resolved the issue.

  • How do you reset the special keyboard function keys?

I used to use an older external keyboard that had Dashboard as F4. Now I got a newer keyboard that has Launchpad as F4. I was used to the old way, so I went into the keyboard shortcut for Dashboard and set it as F4. To my disappointment, however, it only works when I hold 'fn'. (I didn't expect this, as when the key was set to F13 holding fn wasn't required.) So anyway, that is even worse, and I wanted to change it back. However, it wouldn't let me. (In Launchpad & Dock > Keyboard Shortcuts, there used to be a checkmark next to Show Launchpad with a blank area on the right, but now when I try to click Restore Defaults, it forces me to choose a key... and pressing F4 without holding fn doesn't register.) And I know I can make it use all function keys as standard function keys, but not just for F4. And if I do it for all of them, I lose the other keyboard controls and I don't want that. I don't want to have to be stuck with the FunctionFlip 3rd party tool forever... How can I actually reset they key (or ideally, make it bring up dashboard without holding down fn)? You'd think that if it's so simple to change a setting one way it would be simple to change back. I'd even delete some prefs file if i had to.

I figured out that if you remove the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist file and restart, that restores the keyboard.
Second question: Is there any way to make F4 (without holding fn) bring up Dashboard on Lion that doesn't require FunctionFlip? If it matters, I have a Time Machine backup of the symbolichotkeys.plist file from when I had the older keyboard.

  • Disabling default function keys

    Hey everyone,
Long time mac user, just got a new Imac. Can't figure this one out.
On my new slim keyboard, F12 turns my audio all the way up. How can I bypass this? In Dreamweaver F12 is the "preview in browser" shortcut and that is a bigger priority to me than the volume control. I tried using the system prefs to assign F13 to this function. It shows up in the Dreamweaver menu, but it doesn't work. Any help is appreciated.

Yup - go to Keyboard & Mouse, but NOT to the Keyboard Shortcuts tab. Use the Keyboard tab instead. Check the "Use all F1... etc as standard function keys" so you get the F keys to ignore their special functions and become available for other assignments.
As the pref pane notes, pressing the Fn key and an F key will then let you get to the special functions of those keys.
What it doesn't note is that Fn will reverse the checkbox setting. So, you can leave it unchecked and the Fn key + F key will release the F keys from their printed functions and make them available for other uses.
Of course, with QuicKeys, you'll want "empty" F keys to start with, so you'll want the box checked. (this is something we've been dealing with on laptops for awhile, it's only an issue for more users now that the newest standard keyboards behave this way.)

  • CS 4 custom shortcuts and function keys with apple extended keyboard

    Hi all,
the F-Keys from F1 to F12 work fine, but F13 to F16 get entered as F3 (F17 to F19 do not get recognized at all).
Has to be an Illustrator CS4 problem since they are recognized in InDesign or Photoshop CS4 (except the F17 and up).
    Anyone can help?
And yes, I tried using all as standard function keys ;-)
MacPro 2x 2.8 Quad Core Intel Xeon, 10.5.5

I just got the new keyboard today I have the same issue... have you had any luck in finding a work around?  I just got off the phone with tech support and they told me that it is a known issue and to wait for an update be either Adobe or Apple.  It is not an Apple problem, it is an Adobe problem.
For the time being, I have just made it so that I have to hit the "fn" (function) key in order to control the media options on the F-Keys.  This seems to work for now since I use shortcuts on those keys more than the media options.

  • Special function keys

I want to make my 'F' keys F1, F2, etc (top row on keyboard) perform normally, bypassing the 'special functions'. How, please?

here's a twist for you, I use a legacy application via remote desktop for work. I have to use the function of F13 (shift f1) alot.
the keyboard (aluminum with number pad) doesn't allow me to do that. I have turned on the feature via sys pref to use the f1, f2, etc as normal functions. how do I make the other functions go away while I work?

  • Can a function key be assigned to launch a program?

I never seem to use the F13 - F19 keys. Is there a simple way in OS 10.6.5 to assign one of these function keys to launch a program, rather than having to click it in the dock? It would be a nice convenience, but not nice enough to have to purchase a separate program. Thanks.

Quicksilver, free, reviewed at [http://www.macworld.com/reviews/product/526533/review/quicksilver.html] However the doing a web search for this reveals somewhat uncertain sources. There's a 10.6 version at http://www.blacktree.com/ The site looks pretty broken but the download still works.
    Second edit:
Seeing that Quicksilver's site appears to be unsupported you might be better with the Spark recommendation. One Spark user even said they had given up on QS for Spark.

  • New Mac Keyboard - Remap Function Keys???

    Hi there,

PS - I'm running Leopard on a MBP

I have the new wireless aluminum KBs, so I do not have those function keys. However, I believe that those functions are not re-mappable.

  • Remap Function keys on MBP to use in 3270 emulator?

I use a 3270 emulator for work which relies on the use of the Function Keys for navigation. Keys F1 - F24 are used frequently and while I can create "clickable" versions of the keys, it's not as efficient as having them on the keyboard.
Is there a way to remap the MBP keys to use as function keys F1-F24?

I haven't used this myself, but I've seen it recommended fairly often. See whether it meets your need:

  • Apple external keyboard function key missing?

Hi - I have the new aluminium external keyboard (UK english, wired, full size with numeric keypad) and I notice that it doesn't have a Fn modifier key.
I have configured OS X on my MBP to use F1, F2, etc as standard function keys, requiring me to hold down Fn + key on the MBP to adjust brightness, volume, etc.
But on the external keyboard, due to the lack of an Fn key, I cannot control brightness, volume, etc. Is there any key combination I should be using to get the same effect?

The FN key is just below the F13 key on the full keyboard.

  • Function keys no longer working with a new keyboard...

I got a new keyboard and my function keys no longer work with it.  I am used to have them used in the standard format, i.e. F10-F12 control the voume, etc.  I have the "Use all f1,f2, etc." button clicked.  I have also tried restarting my computer.  Any thoughts?

Try doing a SMC reset and PRAM reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • [SOLVED] Function Keys Problem On Dell Inspiron N5010

Yesterday I bought a new laptop (Dell Inspiron N5010) and immediately installed Arch Linux on it. But when I launched the installation framework, I needed to use fdisk to partition my drive manually and to open another tty, ctrl + alt + f2 or up to f7, none of them worked. When I use f4 or f5 for example, it changes the brightness of the screen cause these keys have icons on them which represent the brightness control. So I quitted, took care of that fdisk issue and got back, installed Arch Linux successfully. When launched in GNOME 3, nothing was changed. It still uses f1, f2, ... and so on as "just function keys" without using "Fn" key. It's fine somehow cause my system automatically detected those keys, I can use every single function of my keyboard. But without using Fn key, I can't actually use any fx key for my own use. For example, I can't use Tilda anymore cause when I use only f1, it tries to open monitor control stuff.
    So... any ideas?
Edit: It seems that this problem is all about Arch Linux. A friend of mine has the same laptop and he has just tried Mint Debian RC and function keys worked properly. So, there's a problem and it seems it's related to Arch Linux (or maybe Xorg version, somehow?).

xdunlapx wrote:The function key on my dell laptop was set to the F keys, meaning you have to hit the function key and then an F key to activate the F key. I switched it in the bios so I don't have to hit the function key to activate the F keys. So I would have had to hit Fn+Ctrl-Alt-F1 for example to get to TTY 1. Now since i switched it off in the bios All I have to do is hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to the terminal. But in order to turn off wifi from the F key (for example) I have to hit Fn+F2. It's switched.
I can't tell you how this was helpful. I've never noticed that there was an option in BIOS's Advanced menu for this. I updated it as "Function Key" and it solved my problem, thanks.
