Function keys failing to work on my Satellite C855-1GN

I have a Toshiba Satellite C855-1GN that I received as a gift for Christmas.
I just it for all my college work but I noticed my function keys had switched round.
Usually when I hold FN, it's for the f1-f12 but suddenly it's the other way round and it's for whatever the key is (e.g. brightness, etc).
Now this seems simple, but I found that hardly the case..
I've been into the BIOS and I have checked the settings and changed them multiple times but even set to special function settings, it fails to work.
I've been on the HWsetup and checked them but again, even set to special function, it's failing to work.
I've tried various keyboard shortcuts suggested by people 'cause of the fn key being 'locked' or however they described it but still i cannot seem to figure out what happened and how to change it back.
I can't stand my laptop being like this as i just got used to it and use the other keys a LOT more than the F keys.
Please can someone help me?

Hey, thanks for the link, i managed to solve my problem simply by restoring my computer to a couple hours earlier and now it's working fine.
Thanks for that link though because i've been wondering what the keys were set to

  • Satellite A350-13a - function keys isn't working

    I have Satellite A350-13A. I installed Windows 7 from 2 weeks.
The function keys isn't working although I installed the Toshiba value added package which is responsible for activating function keys.
What the solution for this problem?

    Hi buddy,
I agree with the users above. Value Added Package installation is not enough, because you need Flash Cards Support Utility as well.
    You can download it here:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers
After this tool, your FN keys should start work In my case it worked! :)

  • Function keys no longer working with a new keyboard...

I got a new keyboard and my function keys no longer work with it.  I am used to have them used in the standard format, i.e. F10-F12 control the voume, etc.  I have the "Use all f1,f2, etc." button clicked.  I have also tried restarting my computer.  Any thoughts?

Try doing a SMC reset and PRAM reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Function keys are not working correctly

I've been looking all over the various threads and I can't find an answer that solves my problem.
    Here are the details:
I bought the computer in the U.S. where I live.
I have a iMac 2.4GHz intel Core 2 Duo  EMC 2133 with a 20" screen. Bought it new in February 2008.
I have Mac OS X 10.5.8  (I am waiting for my order for OS Snow Leopard to come in!!)
I have been using a wireless mouse and Keyboard (Love not having cords!)
Recently, my wireless keyboard got a short and quit working. I went down to the apple store and got a new wireless keyboard.
I had the computer with me at the genius bar so, yes, the apple employee saw exactly what I have.
I took it all home got the thing all put back together and got the new keyboard paired up and working with the computer.
    Here are the problems:
Went to go use the function keys while using iTunes and found they weren't working properly. The F10, F11 and F12 do not control the volume of sound as the keyboard indicates they would, they instead activate dashboard, spaces, and application windows.
Following the advice of other threads, I looked over in the system preferences and made sure the "Use all F1, F2 etc." box was unchecked (it was unchecked), things still didn't work.
I tried the fn key but it appears to not work at all it has no effect on the functioning of the function keys.
I went under keyboard shortcuts in system preferences and found the F10, F11 and F12 keys, it confirms that those keys control spaces, dashboard and application windows as they are performing but shows no options to either reassign to volume control (as marked on the keyboard) or make the fn key work.
I've gone back and forth trying various combinations of checked and unchecked boxes to see if anything would work, so far I've come up with nothing.
A couple more important or interesting facts:
Yes I have turned off and taken the batteries out of the old keyboard. My bluetooth connection currently shows it as disconnected.
    I have restarted the computer.
One thing I find odd; when I go under preferences and go to Keyboard and Mouse when I go under the section "Bluetooth" it shows Bluetooth mouse with the name of the mouse and the battery level. BUT nothing is showing up under bluetooth Keyboard, I can't figure out how to change this and don't know if it is contributing to the problem.
When I go under the bluetooth logo on the top bar I find the mouse and both keyboards referenced, the old keyboard is shown as disconnected and the other two are connected. I have tried to update the device's name but it doesn't seem to let me.
I have double clicked on the device under bluetooth and it shows the new keyboard as discoverable, paired and connected. Hence, I am using the new keyboard to write this inquiry.
Please, any assistance would be of great help. I have tried to be thorough in order help narrow the possible problem. Thanks!!

Just thought I'd let you know.  Our suspicions were correct, it was the OS. After I installed Snow Leopard (10.6.8) all the problems were corrected.  I also updated the RAM from 1 gb to 6 gb. The mac is working all around better. Sorry it took so long to get back to everyone. My superdrive had pooped out. Rather than replace it I got an external drive from OWC connected with firewire 800.  So far everything is running very well, as far as I can tell this external drive is better than the original superdrive. My superdrive has always acted funny, infact I returned the first mac I got after a week because its superdrive was also malfunctioning. Anyway, all that to say everything seems to be fully functioning again.

  • Function keys do not work on new wireless keyboard

Hello....my good friend just bought a new iMac G5 2.1 spotlight model computer and has had troubles with his new wireless keyboard in that all 16 function keys do not work at all. Got any ideas or is it just a defective keyboard? He bought this at my recommendation so i am trying to make it all work smoothly for him. Would appreciate a quick response as he has now had this mac for 2 weeks and we cannot figure out the problem. Thanks in advance for any and all help

I have no issues using the Apple BT keyboard. All function keys that apply to the iPad work correctly; display brightness, iPod app control, etc.
Use the most recent version of iOS and also iTunes on your computer. Try a reset. Press & hold the Power and Home buttons together for 10+ seconds, ignoring the red power-off slider, until you see the Apple logo.
If that  does not work, then restore the iPad to it factory settings.

  • Some function keys are not working on my Portege R830

Like others, I have a new Portege R830 and experienced the sudden unexplained loss of functionality of the 13 function keys. My os is a native windows 7 64bit install, with office 2010 installed afterwards. I have the SSD model.
I followed the instructions, removing TVAP and re-installing, and I have both VAP and flashcards operational. I used the USA site drivers for the latest set (the Australian and European driver sets are older versions and different).
Most, but not all, of the function keys are now working again. What isn't working are as follows:
    - F12 functionkey not operating
    - volume up and down keys not operating - what I am most interested in - any suggestions on how to get functional again please?
also, on re-installing VAP, I lost functionality on ecobutton. Any suggestions on how to get working again?
    thanks in anticipation

    Hi
You are on the right way dude the VAP and Flash Card Support Utility controls the FN buttons. If you have an European notebook model, I would recommend using the drivers from Toshiba European driver page but generally speaking there should not be a difference in the software
However, in my case restarting the Flash Cards helps to get back the FN buttons functionality. The Flash Cards can be found in All Programs -> Toshiba -> Flash Cards.
So check if restart would help you.
Regarding the Eco button: ECO Utility controls this button tooso would recommend installing/reinstalling this software beside the VAP

  • My Macbook Pro (bought in 2013) function keys are not working

My Macbook Pro (bought in 2013) function keys are not working. The function keys ie the volume and brightness are not working at all both with one single tap and with the function button. I have checked the settings for the keyboard but nothing seems to stand out that is making the keys not work?
    Please can you help?
    Thanks
    Kat

Some might suggest resetting the SMC, but I don't really think that will solve the problem. You can try, though.
I would suggest, since you're still under warranty, taking your machine to your local Apple Store/AASP and letting them fix the problem. It could be any sort of hardware problem. Only the Apple techs have the tools to properly diagnose and repair the machine.

  • What can I do if my function keys don't work correctly?

QuestionWhat can I do if my function keys don't work correctly?
AnswerFunction keys can mean a few different things. You might be having a problem with the F-keys near the top of your keyboard (F1, F2, etc.), the secondary functions of the F-keys (toggling the wireless or touchpad, for example), or special media keys on your laptop.
There are a few steps you can take to try to resolve these issues. Try the suggestions listed below in the order presented. If a step fixes the problem, you're done! If a step doesn't fix your problem, continue to the next step.
    Understand the FN key
First, ensure you understand how to use the FN key. In most newer models, the special utilities of the F-keys are used when you press the F-keys. To use the F-keys, you need to hold FN first. In older models, this was reversed. pressing the F-keys activated the F-keys. The special utilities of the F-keys are used while holding FN. If you're having trouble using your F-keys, try both with and without the FN key.
Reinstall TVAP or Toshiba Flash Cards Utility
Some models may use the Toshiba Value Added Package or the Toshiba Flash Cards Utility. Check the support site to see if these utilities are available for your model. If you see either listed, download and install it. Some models don't use these utilities; it's okay if you don't see either of them.

  • Functional keys doesn't work in Windows 7.

I have installed BootCamp 3.0 and installed all drivers; however, functional keys doesn't work such as keyboard backlight, volum control.
Let me know if there is any solution.
    Thank you,

' Installed device in another PC with same OS. And it worked (seems like fine) with latest drivers from Creative site.
May be, the problem is that Setup doesn't delete old drivers or other stuff which conflicts with latest drivers? Before released drivers I tried to install beta and them didn't work. Yes, I uninstalled them and removed all drivers and software which I could with Device Manager. But it seems like it is installing well on "clean" system.

  • Aluminum Keyboard Function Keys don't work correctly

I just bough a brand new aluminum wireless keyboard and some of the function keys aren't working, from F1 through F7. F9 works like F3 should and F12 like F5. It's so bizarre. Otherwise the keys all work fine. I've updated everything, tried working through the forums workarounds on the aluminum keyboard, and so far it didn't work for my computer. I'm pretty frustrated. Has anyone figured out the solution? I'm running 10.6.7 and have updated all my software.

One last key combo to try, while holding SHIFT  fn  try toglling volume brightness... and see if that works. It'a been years since I've used anything but my built in keyboard.
At this point Run software update with the keyboard connected and see if there may be an update for that.
    Try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    try a pram reset:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery (not a portable Mac's rechargeable battery) may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.
If still no joy, contact Apple, or go to the store and find out what you may need to do, This was the bullet in my gun, I'm sorry I could not resolve this for you. It's probably something simple, or maybe your machine is too old to suport this device.
    Best of luck.
If they get you going, please post back so others may find out the fix:>

  • Function keys does not work as they should.

The function keys has worked as they should since I bought the computer.
When I turned on the computer yesterday, the function keys didn't work as they should.
    Example:
Before: When I hit the F5, the light in my keyboard was turned on/off. When I hit Fn + F5, I refreshed the browser page.
Now: When I hit the F5, I refresh the browser page. If I hit Fn + F5, I still refresh the browser page.
I used to control the volume on the computer with F6-8, but now I have to click the speaker icon in the lower right corner and manually "drag" the volume up or down.
Does anyone know how this can be fixed?

  • Re: Satellite C855-1GN very slow performance - booting procedure takes 15min

My sister bought a Satellite C855-1GN installed with Win7 64-bit last December (typical - 4 days out of guarantee now) and for sometime has found it getting slower and slower.
She asked me to take a look at it for her, and she is quite right, this laptop is appalling unresponsive for even the most basic of tasks like opening Windows Explorer, which takes over a minute to open.
It's a similar story for pretty much any button press on this machine, sometimes longer depending on what has been clicked. Even getting the thing booted up from power button press to desktop being visible (let alone usable) takes a staggering 15 minutes plus.
Entering text such the password for user to login to Windows, or a URL in any browser (IE and chrome installed by default) results in the spinning circle equivalent to an egg timer for at least 60 seconds before anything happens, as does pretty much any button click. For example, Windows start button or right click on anything whatsoever.
Initially I suspected some kind of malware / too much rubbish installed. Ran full scans, no issues. Disabled / uninstalled all of the bloatware I could find, still no difference.
Shut down all power saving features, still appallingly slow.
Windows Experience / Task Manager / resmon all report nothing out of the ordinary nor anything eating resources. Out of desperation, reset to Out Of Box Experience condition using the hidden recovery partition... which took over 24 hours to complete, and that's not an exaggeration.
I went to bed, then to work for the day, and it still hadn't finished until I'd been home for a couple of hours.
This machine now has a completely fresh (albeit Toshiba specific) Win7 install, and runs just as horrifically slowly. I'm still waiting for desktop, 17 minutes after powering it on before typing this. It's had several reboots, and is not still installing anything.
6GB of RAM is more than ample. Whilst not a P3, 5 or 7, there is no way that an Intel B950 dual core processor running at an admittedly not top class 2.10GHz can be this slow (especially as it wasn't until a few months ago), I've had awful Celerons in my time which have been infinitely faster than this.
Has anyone else had similarly pathetic performance from this model? If so, we're any of you able to resolve it? Or should we just bin this paperweight?

    Hi
In the past we have discussed many times about similar issues and some people were not satisfied about performance of brand new notebooks preinstalled with original recovery image.
As small example you can check this thread. Generally speaking there is described what you should do with this machine. You must, I like to use word optimize, preinstalled operating system. It will definitely run better and faster.
Other way there can also be problem with HDD. If your sister likes this machine I recommend you a small investment in new hardware. Exchange HDD with SSD. SSDs are not so expensive anymore so you can buy one, I would say, with 250GB and I think it is enough free space for their work.
You cannot imagine how fast they are. I use one on my old P500. Notebook starts in 40 seconds only.
Im pretty sure with new SSD and optimized original Win7 that you got with this notebook your sister will have good and pretty fast machine.

  • Satellite A135-S4527 - Drivers needed & Function Keys do not work

    Hello,
I have a Satellite A135-S4527. But, when I got this computer it was without a recovery disk / Vista Reinstall Disk and the Vista OS that was installed was a bloated mess - it was highly used by a individual of lesser intellect. Anyway, I decided to take out that Hard Drive and put in my SSD with Windows XP Professional SP3.
Thats when the problems started rolling in. Turns out Toshiba does not support Windows XP Operating System - I checked the site and was surprised to see a complete lack of support for Windows XP ( even though Windows XP is the dominant OS and was even more so when this laptop was made).
I managed to get the drivers installed, for everything but the modem. Easiest to find drivers were from Intel for the Chipset / Motherboard and the Legacy Graphical Processing Unit. The thing is, I am not sure whether or not these are the official drivers and I am completely lost on the drivers for the modem. Any idea where I can acquire the -latest and greatest- drivers for all my components?
Also there are a few problems,
    - Function Keys For Brightness Do Nothing
    - Laptop sometimes does not come out of sleep mode
What can I do about the brightness keys? The monitor is sometimes a bit too bright to be comfortable to use. Yet I am having no luck making those keys actually do anything.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi
From my knowledge this must be a Toshiba US notebook series.
Therefore I visited the Toshiba US driver page to check the driver availability.
And guess what? I found it but unfortunately there are no many Win XP drivers.
There are Vista and Win 7 drivers available but no Win XP.
I guess that this is everything what is available for Win XP.
    So what to do????
I think you should try to install the missing tools which are released for other notebook series; for example A105-Sxxxxxx
Maybe you will get the driver working
Lets hope. Otherwise you will have to use the notebook without such functions

  • Some function keys don't work onSatellite P850-138

    Hi,
I've got a Satellite P850-138 and the standard functions on the function keys don't seem to work (NOT the F1-F12 that you have to use Fn for, they work fine).
The video functions on F6-F10 seem to work fine when playing a video. The functions on F2-F4 and F11-F12 don't seem to work at all. (brightness up/down, switch screen, enable/disabled touchpad, volume and wireless)
Any advice on how to get them working?
    Thanks in advance.

The first thing you can try is to reinstall Toshiba value added package.
Remove preinstalled version, restart the notebook and install latest version from Toshiba download page.

  • Wireless keyboard function keys don't work even though updated

    Hi,
like i read in different threads, many others had this problem too.
The function keys of my bluetooth keyboard (aluminium 2009) don't work even though i did firmware update for mighty mouse AND the keyboard firmware update. I also unset the option 'use function keys with fn......' option in system preferences. I also tried disconnecting and connecting the device. In system profiler the entry says it is (still) firmware version 80.
    What can i do?
    I'm thankful for any hint.
    Best, Jörg

wrote this in another thread, but it is relevant here, too.
Wanting to buy a keyboard and reading this thread (and others), I went to a local Best Buy. They had quite a few of the wireless keyboards out. They had MC184LL(A) models and (B) models.
ALL of the (A) models worked perfectly with the iPad (typing, brightness, volume, ipod functions, etc).
NONE of the (B) models worked other than basic typing.
They had a stack of maybe 50 new wireless keyboards on the shelf. All but two of them were (B) models.
I bought one of the two (A) models. It is working perfectly on my iPad.
