Function keys issue on a Satellite A100-049

Hello, I am new to this forum so please bear with me if I am in error.
I have just bought a Satellite A100-049 and inadvertently pressed the F10 key. The LED below the key illuminated and I discovered to my horror that I could not type certain letters and, worse, I could not turn off F10, whatever that is! I eventually had to restart.
I can see what F1 to F9 do from the drop down list at the top of the screen, but I cannot work out what F10, F11 and F12 do, and am in constant fear of pressing them again! The handbook and Toshiba web site don't seem to offer any help, although it is probably because I don't know where to look.
Can any of you kind experts out there fill me in?
Many thanks,
John

Thank you for that. You are quite right.
I have just downloaded the handbook for this model. I didn't earlier because I thought it would be just the same as the handbook supplied with the computer, but it isn't; it contains much more information, including the answer to my question.
Funny, though, that the F10 function would not turn off (by pressing Fn + F10).
Anyway, thanks for your response.
John

  • Satellite A100-049 - CD ROM drive no longer found

My satellite A100-049 no longer sees my CD rom drive, It won't auto play any discs, and when I double click a shortcut to a program that uses a disc it says 'no cd-rom drive found'.
I've tried updating the driver but I already have the most up to date one. It was fine yesterday, before I installed Norton 360- I don't know if that has anything to do with it. My operating system is vista home premium.
I really need help quickly as I'm going to university in under 3 weeks and the cd rom drive is vital to my course.

    Hi Michael
Its very strange that your CD/DVD drive does not work longer after the Norton 360 installation. For me it looks like the Norton 360 has modified some registry keys and therefore the drive malfunctions.
I would recommend removing the CD/DVD drive from the device manager.
Then restart the notebook. After new reboot the windows OS should recognize the new hardware (CD/DVD drive) and should install it again.
Then start the registry and remove the upper and lower filter values from this registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    then reboot and test again!
Good luck and cheers dude ;)

  • Satellite A100-049: CDs and DVDs don't read after standby

I have a new satellite A100-049 that came with vista home premium pre-installed. After returning to the computer from sleep/standby (Whatever the mode is when the light pulses yellow) no discs can be read in the drive. The disc will spin continually but nothing will happen.
Everything works fine when the computer is turned on first time, but after sleep it stops reading discs. Is there anything I can do about this?

It doesn't recognize it when i re-insert it or put it in fresh after standby. It just keep spinning without loading. Wierd thing is, if i try to load a program with the disc spinning and by clicking on the desktop icon and then take the disc out while it isn't loading I get a message saying please insert disc

  • Where can I find Vista 64-Bit drivers for the Satellite A100-049?

I currently run Vista Home Premium SP1 32-Bit and do so because there appears to only be 32-Bit drivers on Tosiba's website:
    [http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/vista_drivers.jsp?macId=&mode=allMachines&userOS=& action=search&selCategory=2&selFamily=2&selSeries= 153&selProduct=700&selOS=2]
Where can I find Vista 64-Bit drivers for the Toshiba Satellite A100-049?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the reply.
That's rubbish. Vista 64-bit runs fine with 2Gb and my laptop supports up to 4Gb.
We'll never move on to 64-Bit if companies don't provide drivers.
I'll look at those sites. I've had trouble installing nVidia drivers from nVidia website.
I have to use the one provided by Toshiba.
Hopefully I won't find this when trying 64-Bit. My plan is to go 64-Bit with Windows 7 so no rush just yet.
As I understand it Vista drivers will work with Windows 7.
Thankfully when I reinstalled Vista 32-Bit not long ago using an OEM from Technet I only need 2-3 drivers from Toshiba website, most of it they give to download you don't need at all.
    Thanks again.
p.s - They do offer 64-Bit drivers for my network card though.

  • [Solved] Asus Zenbook Prime (UX31A-DB51) Function key issues

I recently purchased this machine, and the final issue I have with is that the Function keys are not working. Looking at the wiki I saw that it should work out of the box with 3.4.4-2, and I'm on 3.4.5-1 and have issues with it. Following the instructions on building a patched module led to kernel panics.
Thanks in advance for any help

Hi, I bought the UX32VD a few weeks ago. Most of the steps, mentioned in the article about the UX31A apply to the UX32VD too. I don't know what your problems are. All the steps are explained.
    [ 8.039202] asus_wmi: Can't find DSTS
Just patch the kernel with the mentioned fix, or use the dkms variant. This will fix the can't find DSTS issue. After that, the asus-nb-wmi (or sth. like that) module will be loaded successfully, which makes most of the function keys work (except the screen brightness keys). The only thing remaining is to use the supplied hackarounds to be able to change the screenbrightness.
After these steps, I created a .Xmodmap to remap the automatic kbd. backlight key and the touchpad disable key to XF86MonBrightnessDown (or so .. can't remember the exact name) and XF86MonBrightnessUp and respectively mapped the shortcuts with xfce4-keyboard-settings (XF86MonBrightnessDown to the command backlight down, XF86MonBrightnessUp to backlight up). Unfortunately, sometimes this is a little bit buggy. The scan codes change randomly on some reboots, eg: one time it gets recognized as XF86MonBrightnessUp, and a few keypresses later as something different.
Hope they fix this issue with the 3.5 kernel, and eventually get the actual screenbrightness buttons to work.

  • Keyboard function Key issues

So my Keyboard on my Macbook has had some issues over the past 6 months, so about 6 months ago it started muting the sound on my computer when I pressed certain keys like : enter, esc, P, /, \, 0 or ) and a few others, to fix it though i need to hold down the mute button stops the other keys from muting my sound so I just keep a weight on it, since I'm a student and have barely any money. but lately after I finally updated my OS to maverick I found the Function keys option and clicked it, on, now it uses that App Expose function instead, so i can literally swap between muting and app expose. I've generally lived with it up until this point but I think I need to get it fixed, I doubt it is something i can fix at home but I just want to know what is happening before I spend my precious little money.

Sorry I left some stuff out. My keyboard has 2 sets of functions so when I UnCheck the Use 'F1, F2 etc keys as standard function keys' it switches to the Mute function on the F10 key, the decrease volume key on F11, etc so when it is on this certain keys will trigger the mute function without me actually pressing the mute key. Where as when I switch the 'F1, F2 etc keys as standard function keys' on those same keys that triggered mute now trigger         "app expose" function, so it doesn't help, also i didn't want to go into excruciating detail last time but some other keys either don't work like the mute key or the increase volume key and other keys do other keys functions. so in summary I probably should get the keyboard replaced but how long does that take? and how much does it cost

  • Fn Function Key Issues

My FN key is sometimes turned off after booting allowing me to use the F1-12 keys without having to press the FN key, however sometimes it is turned on and pressing F keys does all the stuff represented by the symbols ontop of the F key and to access the traditional uses I must press FN. In more sober words they sometimes randomly switch after booting. How can I control and remap these keys and stuff?
Also arch forums search is terrible

What kind of computer is this?  Is there a setting in the bios for toggling the function keys?  Is it a mac(book)?  If so, did you read the wiki articles about that?
Do you want to fix this issue of inconsistency, or do you want to remap keys "and stuff"?  If you want to remap keys, this can depend on what WM/DE you are using.  There are wiki articles on this as well.
I know that's a lot of questions, but we'll need more information to give you any suitable direction.

  • How to Reverse Functions Key setting on P55W Satellite

I have a P55W Satellite that I would like to reverse the way the function keys work. I did it once by accident but on reboot it is back to original. How do I get the keys to operate as function not media keys permanently?

Assuming the OS is Win 8 or 8.1, press Win key, type "System Settings", hit Enter and click on Keyboard.  Make selection, click on Apply and OK and setting should be retained.

  • Special Functions keys not working on Satellite C50 - Windows 8.1

    Hello,
Please could someone help me out.
I have a Toshiba Satellite C50-A0393 that I got a few months ago with Windows 8.1 already installed (64 bit). Today I got a message saying I needed to look at the PC Health, a Toshiba blue message concerning the access agreement, and I noticed that there were three upgrades that needed to be done, the only one I can remember being the Toshiba Video Player. I think that another one had to do with the charger light?
    I don't know.
But once I restarted my laptop after the updates I noticed that the special function keys were not working (i.e. the volume, mute, pause and play, etc.). i then went onto the Toshiba Desktop Assist and into system settings and selected the keyboard tab. I then made sure the setting for special function mode was selected.
Now, when that setting is in place, certain keys work but for F3, F5, F6, etc and when I want to use the special functions only the volume up and down work when pressing 'Fn', but special function mode is still selected? Only those two work, not the mute or flightmode or bluetooth, which was working normally before the upgrades.
I have googled but cannot find anything specific to 8.1, or not relating to upgrading to 8.1. I cannot find the flashcard utility and do not want to try something where I do not know what I am doing. How can I get these special function keys working again normally? Sorry for the long message but I wanted to give as much info as possible.
    Many thanks,
    Melanie

    Hi
It sounds strange to me that a Toshiba update (Toshiba Video Player, etc) would affect the function key functionality.
Nevertheless the function key (F1-F10) can be used in combination with or without the FN button. This depends on the special function key mode.
In case you want to use the F1-F12 functions without the pressing FN button, the function key mode should be enabled (should be set to special function mode)
Here the full details how it works:
    https://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD2503B90001R01.htm
Now it these buttons would not work even if the FN button has been pressed, then there is some problem with the software.
First of all I would recommend you to set the BIOS to default because this function key mode can be changed in BIOS too.
After that, check if the key would work. If not, reinstall the
    Toshiba Function Key Utility
    And Toshiba System Driver
You can also check if the essential service has not been disabled.
Start the Task Manager and go to start up items. There you should enable all Toshiba apps and services and then restart.

  • Hard drive replacement on Satellite A100-049

    Hi, thanks for reading.........
Recently my Toshiba Satellite laptop has given an error on booting about imminent hard drive failure, so I purchased a new drive of exactly the same make and model, WD Scorpio Blue, 320GB.
On installing the new drive the laptop beeps quickly several times over and sometimes boots to CD or sometimes just beeps until I power off.
I've tried the hard drive in another laptop and it works fine.
I've tried to use the Toshiba recovery CD to restore the laptop back to factory, but when Vista loads it errors with a message like 'This software is not configured for the hardware', or something?
I've installed Ubuntu 11.10 and that works great, except I get the beeping whenever I restart or power on the laptop.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as it's driving me nuts!
    Many thanks!
    Steve

I appreciate the sound is coming from the bios, I was just highlighting the fact that I know the actual hard drive is functioning as I can boot in to an operating system.
I've installed a different SATA drive and that was just an 80GB drive and that had the same problem, that works fine in the laptop it is from, but put it in the Toshiba and the beeps continue!
I don't have any other drives to hand, but I think I've tested enough. The current one is showing as failing, but boots OK with no beeping, the new 320GB drive boots OK into Linux but beeps like crazy and the 80GB drive boots into Windows XP but again beeps like crazy.
If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful, as it's driving me round the bend! :)
    Cheers,

  • FN keys not working on Satellite A100

I posted a question back in febuary with little success in a solution.
The fn keys on my laptop are not working, the only time the work is while the computer is booting up.
Once my display screen comes up they mysteriously stop working. I have been told to download all kinds of things from this website which i have but everytime i go to install them they won't let me.
If some one actually has a thought out response to this question please post.
I need to know what i need to download and how to install it.
Pretty simple, please respond with those answers.
    thank you

In Windows Vista there is a difference between accounts with "computer administrator" privileges and the Administrator account.
In the Administrator account the User Account Control is disabled. Also by default, the Administrator account is present, but hidden and disabled.
You can enable it using 2 difference methods:
    _Method 1_
Start by booting your computer to Vista in your computer administrator account Next open administrative tools in the control panel. Double click the computer management item, this will open it. You then authorize user accounts control by clicking the continue button. Double click on "local users and groups", this will open it.
    - Click the user's folder.
    - Select the administrator icon.
    - Right click it to open its content menu.
    - Choose properties.
    - Remove the check mark from the "account is disabled" box.
    - Click OK.
    - Restart your computer.
Once your computer has restarted, open the administrative tools control panel.
In the Users area, disable any other enabled accounts with computer administrator privileges.
Look for account icons that do not have the red disable mark.
Click to place a check mark on these account icons.
    Next you open Properties.
Click to add a check mark in the box labeled "Account Is Disabled."
Check to see that your Administrator account is enabled.
You can now close Computer Management and restart Windows.
When vista reboots the administrator account will be loaded automatically.
Be advised that this method is for temporary use only, for security reasons. You should never leave your Administrator account enabled without a password.
    _Method 2_
Turn on your computer. As Windows is starting up, when you see the "Starting Windows" come on your screen, quickly press F8. In a dual-boot environment, this can be done easily from the boot menu.
When the boot menu is showing:
Using the arrow or tab keys, you will select "Microsoft Windows" (this is the option that runs Windows Vista). Do not press Enter, instead you press the F8 key, and you will progress to the Safe Mode boot screen.
At the Safe Mode boot screen, you will select the first option, "Safe Mode".
Press Enter. It will take a few moments but Vista will present to you a login screen that has two options, Administrator and Other User.
Click on the Administrator icon. Your Windows Vista Administrator account has now been enabled.
Then you could try to log as admin and could remove the VAP ;)

  • Question on reinstalling DVD media software on a Satellite A100-049

I still have WinDVD installed but have removed Ulead (I forget the exact name of the DVD Media software) and cannot now re-install it.
Would Toshiba send me a proper installation CD for these?
    Thanks

    Thanks. I was thinking that.
There's nothing wrong with the actual disc as far as I'm aware. There just appears to be no obvious menu when you run it from Windows. It restores perfectly fine. I wasn't sure if Toshiba would send me "normal" CDs for this software. I'm not after anything more than I get anyway.

  • Satellite A100-049 with Vista - Win DVD will not play?

Just bought the above. All seems fine so far (but only had it 2 days) apart from when I try to play a region 2 dvd in the drive. I select WinDVD 8 and it gives the option to open from drive of folder. I select "f" being the drive and the disc spins up. No picture or sound though. The initial screen just stays on. (They will play in media centre so drive seems fine)
Cannot see any setting to change and the drive is set to region 2. Looking in the "getting started" it does say that for the final version of vista it "may" be necessary to download a patch but I cannot find one.
    Any help appreciated

    Hi
Do you try to play the original DVDs?
If your DVD drive was set to another region its possible that you will be not able to play such DVDs.
You can change the region code in the drive properties. But be careful; you can change it only 4 or 5 times (cannot remember)
But if you can play the movies with MCE so I dont think that you need to change the drive region code.
Did you try to install some codex? If not try it!!

  • Satellite A100-049 shuts down and restarts itself

Have had this laptop for about six months and it occasionally, for no apparent reason, just shuts itself down and restarts. This can obviously be very irritating. Anybody alse come across this or know why it happens?

    Hi
Did you see any error messages or BSOD?
Did you notice a high temperature or a hot air blowing from the notebook ventilators?
Such automatically and unexpected shut downs could be related to the high internal temperature.
The notebook supports an overheating protection.
If the temperature increases to a critical level the notebook shuts down automatically to prevent the hardware from damage.
In such cases mostly the temperature goes up because the ventilators cannot rotate with full performance.
The simply fan cleaning could helps. The computer stores sell nice tools to clean the cooling modules.
But if you have no experience and dont know how to do it, please ask a notebook technician for an help.

  • The function key in my Satellite C660 is not working

The function key in my Toshiba Satellite C660 is not working except for volume.
That problem appeared after i changed something in the startup programs and uninstalling as i remember tvap and no button support appears in my start up programs :(

That unbelievable I did something wrong..
First of all you have to install VAP. Then reboot the notebook.
Download and install Flash Cards Utility and reboot the notebook again.
Now go to Start -> All Programs -> Toshiba -> Utilities -> Flash Cards and restart this software.
Now the FN buttons should work.
But before you would start the whole installation, you should uninstall the VAP and Flash Cards and should clean the registry using CCleaner as suggested by some users hare in the forum!
