Function Keys on macbook pro

I recently made the switch (after a year of pining) from an ibook G4 to a macbook pro. I love the computer, however, I find myself missing some of the function keys that were on the previous model (mainly the F9 and F10 that used to show all the windows for a certain program and all the windows currently open). Is there anyway to reprogram the current keys so that they reflect the old fuctions? (right now they control the brightness of the keyboard, which I don't particularly care to have as a 'hot key').

The only way is to go to System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard tab, check the box for Use F1, F2 etc. as standard function keys. However, this will apply to all the F keys - display brightness, volume, etc. There is no way to get around this, unfortunately.
Alternatives are:
1) activate those functions (which are called Expose, by the way) using hot corners (moving the pointer to a corner).
2) assign other key combinations to them.
Set either of those up in System Preferences > Dashboard & Expose.

I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support. Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences. Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key). I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility. The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future.

It sounds like the return key is not working on your computers built in keyboard. I would use these steps from the following article to help isolate and resolve the issue:
Try logging into a different user account. If the issue does not occur when logged into a different user account, then troubleshoot for software issues.
You may have accidentally set an option that changes how your keyboard operates.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Dictation & Speech, and then click “Text to Speech.” If “Speak selected text when the key is pressed” is selected, deselect it or press Set Key to select another key.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, and then click Keyboard. Make sure Slow Keys is turned off. If Slow Keys is on, you must hold down a key longer than usual before it’s recognized.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Language & Text, and then click Input Sources. Select the checkbox next to Keyboard & Character Viewer, and then select “Show Input menu in menu bar.” Open the Input menu and make sure the correct keyboard layout is selected. To see the keyboard layout, choose Show Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu.

The Insert Key in Macbook Pro (Middle 2009)

I'm looking for the Insert Key in the Macbook Pro.

SnqKe, there is no Insert key to find for the Mid 2009 MacBook Pro.
Software such as [KeyRemap4MacBook|http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook> can allow the emulation of keys not on the keyboard. If it doesn’t already have an option to emulate an Insert key, the author of KeyRemap4MacBook is quite willing to add new options to the software — he has added a few on my request.
For FlightGear in particular, it comes with its own key binding files, so even without any key remapping software installed, you could modify FlightGear’s data/input/keyboard.xml file to change the key of the script that is normally bound to the Insert key.

The techs at Apple do have some lattitude in what they can offer. And it won't hurt to ask, and if they did help you out, it would be your one and only "save" for the rest of your life probably. Since you bought yours back in 2010, I doubt they would do anything. If it were a brand new unit, they may have some sympathy. But in your case, I'd say probably not.

Left shift key on MacBook Pro (10.7.5) malfunction... how to reset?

I have a mid-2011 MacBook Pro, OS 10.7.5. After a water spill, the left shift key on the keyboard now operates as an options key by default. I cannot figure out how to reset the left shift key to perform shift functions by default. Any ideas?

Water spill more than likely damaged your shift key if that was the only key that is damaged. Did you let your MBP dry completely (48-78 hrs) prior to using it?

Fn key on macbook pro

What is the fn key used for on the macbook pro? Is there a default short cut for replace edit, overwrite etc? Its normally the f10, f11 key etc but I cant figure it out on macbook pro...

what i mean is that when i push "F10" i get "F10" then when push "fn"+"F10" I get the 'iLife keyboard fun buttons'.

The DVD function of 2007 MacBook Pro (10.7.5) no longer works. Apple does repair, but referred to buy an external DVD player. Purchased two, including the Apple, neither work on my model. Trying to burn DVD of 8MM video. Any suggestions?

I am trying to turn my Sony 8mm Handicam video into DVD through my MACBOOK PRO. Unfortunately my DVD function no longer works. Apple won't repair, no longer carries the parts. Referred to Apple repair shop. Gentleman there said it cost the same to purchase an external DVD player as repair the MACBOOK. So far, I have purchased two, including Apple's. Neither works with my MACBOOK. Any ideas or suggestions?

Yeah, keeping an older machine running has it's challenges.
Have you tried one of the DVD burners from Other World Computing? Their sales support can probably guide you to one that should work. The OWC burner that I use with my 2009 17-inch MacBook Pro has FireWire and USB2 connectors.
Are you using iMovie/iDVD or Final Cut Pro/DVD Studio Pro? And, do you have Roxio Toast?
If all else fails, you could try a stand alone DVD-Recorder. You'd want to pick a model that supports external video input. I have a LiteON DVD-Recorder that I patch VHS, Regular8 and Hi8 decks to now and again just to get stuff off tape to DVD-R.
Report back on what works (or continues to not work) for you.

Depressed keys on Macbook Pro 15" C2D

Hi All,
I've had a new Macbook Pro for about 3 weeks and I already have, what seems to be, semi-permanently depressed keys; in affect the keys I've used most (e.g. R for reloading a page in Safari) are noticably lower than others - when pressing these keys they have less 'travel' making it disconcerting to use. Quite frankly there is now an array of different depths now across the keyboard.
I plan to call Apple support on tomorrow but wondered if anyone else had experienced a similar situation?

It would be worthwhile turning off your keyboard repeat rate in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and mouse and seeing what happens. You are using only the built-in keyboard and trackpad?

Red or White Keys for MacBook Pro 2011

Disable F-keys on Macbook Pro keyboard?

As I sometimes use my Macbook Pro for work (programming that is), I sometimes need the F-keys for shortcuts the programs I use. (For instance, IDEA).
Is there some way to disable - temporarily - the OS X shortcuts on the F-keys so other programs can use them?

When you power on your MacBook Pro, hold the Option key and you should get the Startup Manager that will show you anything that is bootable. All you have to do is select the start up drive and you are good to go.

Difference in expresscard functionality in a Macbook Pro 5.1 vs 5.2?

I have a Macbook Pro 5.1 that I'm trying to use with a 3rd party expansion chassis that connects via the expresscard 34 slot. I've used this chassis successfully with several other models of Macbook Pro, but I can't get it to work with the 5.1.
Now the manufacturer is telling me that the chassis works with Macbook Pro generations 1 thru 4, and with Generation 5.2 and up.... but that it is incompatible with Macbook Pro 5.1.
Can anybody explain to me what is so unique about the 5.1 that it can't work with the same external Expresscard - to - PCI hardware that works with all other Macbook Pros? And if so, does anyone know of an update or workaround that might correct this? (The hardware manufacturer's only solution is that I need to buy a new computer, which I hate to do, because mine is less than a year old.)

IS the express card a delkin or a caldigit or some other brand? It helps to know what express card esata device you have to fix your problem. There are different chipsets in the express cards from different mfg's.

Mavericks broken lot of functionality on my MacBook Pro

My MacBook Pro worked PERFECTLY, prior to install Mavericks!
After installing Mavericks, I experienced couple of malfunction:
unable to connect via 3G using the Vodafone Mobile Broadband: immediately after start, the program quit unexpectedly
my scanner Epson Perfection 1260 disonnect randomly after scanning the preview
a Java Applet (running in stand-alone window) quit unexpectedly during the Work
the IBM Sametime Unified Telephony (a voip program) doesn't work: no audio during calls
IBM Symphony program quits immediately after start
randomly, connecting my Samsung Galaxy Tab II via USB, the Mac CRASHES (gray screen and reboot)
I read couple of discussions, and I'm convinced that Mavericks is the solely responsible of malfunctions.
I use my MacBook Pro for work, and this is a disastrous condition for me.
I'm very disappointed by this OS update.
Maybe the OS update failed? How can I fix?
Is there a way to recover Mountain Lion?
