Function keys, Volume & Keyboard shortcuts make me sad

As with many of you, I've just upgraded to 10.5, and I'm having infinite problems with volume control.
I'm using one of the new slim apple keyboards (and oh its fine, but besides..) and the volume control is on the F key row at the top (as opposed to over the num pad, and yes I've attempted to just use the buttons above the num pad, but alas, nothing).
The problem I'm having is that I can either have keyboard volume control, OR I can use the other F keys for various other functions and bindings, but not both.
The option for this is (as expected) under *Keyboard & Mouse, Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys*
All I want is volume control and the ability to use the other keys for other applications, even if I had to install a program of some description in order to have this work
The alternative is to find out how to set it up as an actual keyboard shortcuts through *Keyboard & Mouse, Keyboard Shortcuts*, but as volume control has no text, it becomes rather difficult to say what menu title it is.

I have the keyboard hooked up to a MacBook Pro under 10.4.10. Now I can't use the function keys in combination with shift. For instance in Photoshop, the command fill with forground colour (=shift + F5) is not working. How can I fix this?

    rajlego,
    in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, select the Shortcuts tab, and then select Mission Control on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, make sure that the Mission Control checkbox is checked, double-click on its current key combination (by default “^↑”) so that the key combination is highlighted, and then press the F3 button — that will set its shortcut to be F3. You can now press F3 to bring up Mission Control without needing to also press the Fn button.

  • How to use a function key on keyboard for executing a non SAP program

    Hello Gurus.
    My client want to run a non SAP program selecting the specific function key on keyboard during the entering data on SAP.
    i knew that it is possible to execute a non sap program after adding special program each by SAP program.  but, it is huge jobs.
    client wants to run a non sap program wherever he is on SAP program.  Is it possible ?

    Hi,
    1. Create a ".exe" file for the .NET application.
    2. Create a PF-STATUS and assign the Function Code for the desired Function Key in the SAP program.
    3. In the USER COMMAND code inside program, when the respective function code is triggered, write the below code with the path to the .NET exe file.
    CALL METHOD cl_gui_frontend_services=>execute
      EXPORTING
        document = '.NET exe file path'
      EXCEPTIONS
        OTHERS   = 1.

  • How can I create a button that performs the function of a keyboard shortcut, specifically print scrn

    I need my presentation users to take a screen shot of a slide within my presentation.  I know that windows 8 has a new function that allows a screen shot to be taken and saved directly to the user's computer and I need a button that can be placed on a slide and perform this function.  The shortcut is (windows key) + (print scrn).  I want to save my userss some time and just have a button perform this task.  Any idea on how I can make this possible? I am using Captivate 7.

    I think Ajit may have misunderstood your need.  The command he told you about triggers the Print command to allow you to print the currently active slide (on a laser or inkjet printer). This does not have the same result as you would get by hitting the PrintScreen button on your keyboard (to take a screencapture and have it saved to the Clipboard for pasting somewhere else).
    You can add a button to your slide and set the PrintScreen key as the shortcut, but this will NOT mean that clicking the button will cause a screencapture to be taken.
    There are JavaScript libraries that will allow you to execute JavaScript code in a Captivate project that can take a screen capture:
    https://github.com/ariya/phantomjs/wiki/Screen-Capture
    However, to implement these solutions you would need to be quite knowledgeable with setting up JavaScript.  It's not for newbies.

  • Volume keyboard shortcut not working (since upgrade to Snow Leopard)

    The following keyboard shortcut commands, when I have upgraded to OS 10.6 a couple of months ago, have stopped working:
    Command-Up Arrow
    Command-Down Arrow
    (They control the volume of the iTunes application itself)
    Apparently they still exist according to: http://www.apple.com/itunes/how-to/shortcuts.html
    I have the newest version of OS X and itunes, respectively: 10.6.2 and 9.0.2

    Try adding every drive to Spotlight's Privacy Pane in System Preferences>Spotlight, wait a few minutes & remove them, then wait a few hours/days to see if it's better.
    Though slower, in the intterim, you might try...
    EasyFind...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11076
    Find Any File...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/30079/find-any-file
    I've actually disabled the worst Searh utility/Function I've ever seen on most of my Macs, just keep Spotlight active on a couple to try to assist with all it's problems.

  • Adding Custom Hot Keys, not Keyboard Shortcuts

    So, I've gone online and done some research but I can't seem to find anything on creating custom, universal hot keys. Everything seems to be about keyboard shortcuts, which are great within the applications, but I'm looking to create Hot Keys that launch applications or folders.
    For example, in Quicksilver (which is no longer working for some reason) I had a trigger to open my Applications folder set at "controlshiftA" one for my documents folder at "controlshiftD" and one to launch Safari at "controlshiftZ" but I can't seem to set this up without some sort of app launcher.
    I also don't want to use an app launcher because the additional engine it uses just clogs up my resources and increases my start-up time by about a minute....

    You can't. You need an application launcher for those tasks.

    as I said there is no way around that. either you use an application launcher or you won't have that functionality. 1 minute extra startup time sounds way too much. I use Butler, not quicksilver but I know for sure it only adds a few seconds and consumes very few resources when it runs. I suspect it's the same way with Quicksilver.

  • Remap Volume Keyboard Shortcuts?

    Hello Apple Community. Anyone know how I can remap the volume up/down/mute keys with the standard function keys turned on? I'm using a Mac Pro and I want to be able to use the standard keys when I'm editing but I can't find a fast way on my keyboard to adjust the volume since there's no "fn" key like there is on my MacBook Pro. Anyone have any thoughts? I'd love to be able to set F10-12 to adjust the volume as standard fn keys instead of with Apple's super-duper presets. PLEASE HELP!

    Couldn't find answers.
    I have a Macmini and a windows keyboard with no volume control. Is there a keyboard shortcut for MAC OS X for volume control on normal keyboards?

    Apparently not, but I didn't peruse all the items in links at the bottom of http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1343

  • How can I get function keys (volume, brightness) to work in Bootcamp?

    I have a MacbookPro purchased in June of 2011 and installed Bootcamp to play certain games that only work on Windows. The only problem is that my volume and brightness keys don't function, which is incredibly hard to work with in a full screen video game.
    I need a straight forward solution to this problem, I have searched endlessly for an answer and nobody gives an easy-to-understand answer. Thanks!

    I believe it's in the BootCamp settings. There should be an option to enable the functions of the buttons rather than as F keys. Click the icon on the taskbar notification area, and go to Boot Camp Settings I think it is named. Also check and make sure sure keyboard doesn't use an F-Lock button if you are on an external keyboard.

  • Setting Volume Keyboard Shortcuts

    How can I assign system wide up/down volume controls to Fn keys on a non-Apple keyboard?

    If you use alsa, try make bind to volume keys such script:

    #!/bin/sh
    MUTE="off"
    if [ 'X'$1 == 'Xmute' ]; then
    amixer -q set Master off
    MUTE="on"
    else
    LEVEL=`cat /proc/acpi/ibm/volume | awk '/^level:/ {print $2}'`
    VOLUME=`perl -e "printf (\"%2.0f\n\", $LEVEL/15*100);"`

  • Keyboard shortcut "make unconditional"

    Out of curiosity, but also out of interest: I'm happy with esc, q, C and esc, q, D for specific conditions, but haven't found a similar shortcut to replace Alt+s, o, a, u for "make selected text unconditional".
    Any hints or tips?

    Karen:
    Do you happen to know if that List Shortcuts plugin is available for FM8?
    The installation program does not yet know about FM8. The work-around is to:
    - Browse to the FrameMaker installation directory. By default, on a Windows computer this is:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe FrameMaker 8
    - In the
    maker.ini file, in the
    [APIClients] section, add the following line or copy it from your existing 7.2 installation:
    Pubs-Tools:ListShortcuts=Standard, ListShortcuts, Pubs-Tools\ListShortcuts.dll, all
    - Create a directory named
    Pubs-Tools
    - Copy
    ListShortcuts.dll,
    ListShortcuts.ini, and
    ListShortcuts.hlp into the
    Pubs-Tools directory.
    Restart FrameMaker. You should now have a
    Pubs-Tools menu. Choose
    ListShortcuts
    Cheers & hope this helps,

  • I use a wacom tablet and since firefox version 7 I am no longer able to program the buttons on the pen or tablet to perform the 'back' function but the keyboard shortcuts still work

    Mac OS 10.6.8 (snow leopard). Same problem on 2 machines, a Quad core MacPro and a 2010 27" iMac

    Add-ons are the responsibility of their authors. McAfee does not even put their extension on http://addons.mozilla.org you had to install it from their site.
    Disable "McAfee Site Advisor" extension which was just updated to 3.4.0, which probably took it out of the addons block list.
    * "Ctrl+Shift+A" > find McAfee Site Advisor and use "Disable", and then restart Firefox.
    * Do a Google Search no problem
    * It seems that if you re-enable Site Advisor again, and restart Firefox you are okay. At least you know where to look if you get the error again or Google searches slow down.

  • Error when trying to assign Function Key as Service menu shortcut

    When I try to assign Control-Option-F15 to a Service Menu item in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts I get the following error in the Console:
    9/14/09 10:09:27 AM System Preferences[878] * Assertion failure in +[NSKeyboardShortcut shortcutWithKeyEquivalent:modifierMask:], /SourceCache/AppKit/AppKit-1038.11/Menus.subproj/NSMenu_KeyEquivalents.m:37
    9/14/09 10:09:27 AM System Preferences[878] Invalid parameter not satisfying: c != nil
    Is it possible to assign function keys as keyboard shortcuts to Service menu items?

    I have the same problem (though I didn't look in the Console): I try to assign F8 to one of my services and the shortcut just stays blank. However, I have found a work-around:
    1. Leave the shortcut for the service blank, but make a note of the name -- in my case, "iTunes- PlayPause".
    2. Go to "Application Shortcuts" on the left of the Keyboard Shortcuts preference pane.
    3. Add an item under "All Applications" giving it the name of your service (eg. "iTunes- PlayPause") and you can then assign a function key as the shortcut (eg. F8).
    Since the service appears in the application's "Services" menu, it will now have the shortcut assigned uner "All Applications". An annoying bug, but at least there's a workaround.
    Cheers,
    Jolin

  • My keyboard volume buttons no longer work (other function keys still work)??

    I've never had any problems with my keyboard but after one instance of viewing a video (via my TV, where I selected audio device
    as HDMI as for some reason it was still coming from my mac, which was not usual) my volume function keys on keyboard no longer
    work.
    When I press them they show they volume icon onscreen but it is grey and non-functional?
    I've tried going to system pref and keyboard setting to ensure the function keys are all set as they should be but I have not had any
    success so far. I've also played video through TV again and put audio settings back to mac, instead of HDMI, but still nothing.
    Any ideas??

    In the meantime, you could use Keyboard Viewer to type the characters which don't work.
    You can open Keyboard Viewer via the Input Menu - that's the menu that usually displays a flag, on the right end of the main menubar. If the Input Menu is not shown in the main menubar, go to System Preferences > Language & Text > Input Sources and checkmark the "Show Input menu in menu bar" item. On the same page, at the top of the list of input sources (languages ≈ keyboard layouts) checkmark the item "Keyboard & Character Viewer".
    With the Keyboard Viewer open, any letters you click on its representation of the keyboard will be entered in an open document.
    Note - this can't, of course, be used as a substitute for characters needed for startup commands.

  • MacBook ('08) function keys not working (volume, etc) XP SP3, Bootcamp 2.1

    I have just upgraded from a MacBook Core Duo 2.0Ghz (mid-2006) to a MacBook Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz (mid-2008).
    I had Windows XP (SP3) installed and running nicely on a partition on the old MacBook, and what I've now done is simply swapped that whole hard drive from the old MacBook to the new one. OSX (10.5) runs just fine, but Windows is giving me issues. I successfully reactivated Windows, and then did a repair installation from my original WinXP install disc, which took Windows back to Service Pack 2. I used the OSX install DVD that came with the new MacBook to install the Boot Camp Windows drivers (version 2.0), and then downloaded and ran the Boot Camp 2.1 update, and then upgraded to WinXP Service Pack 3.
    The trackpad on the new MacBook is working in Windows, as is MOST of the keyboard. Only the function keys aren't working (brightness, volume, eject, etc.). I've tried using them both with and without holding down the "fn" key in the bottom-left of the keyboard, and both with and without the setting checked (in Windows Boot Camp prefs) for using the function keys for hardware purposes.
    I can't help but think that the problem arises form the different layouts of the 2006 MacBook and the 2008 MacBook. The 2006 model used the F3, F4, and F5 keys for volume (mute, decrease, increase), while the 2008 model uses F10, F11, and F12.
    When I look under Add/Remove programs in Windows, I see that there are still old Apple drivers for keyboard and other devices. I see versions of the drivers going back to 1.x, and also 2.0 and 2.1.
    In efforts to start afresh, I've tried using both the Boot Camp 2.1 Updater and my 2008 MacBook Install DVD (which has Boot Camp 2.0) to remove Boot Camp from Windows, but neither seem to really do the trick in terms of really removing all the Boot Camp components and drivers, and reinstalling the Boot Camp drivers doesn't get the keyboard function keys working.
    I've tried everything I can think of (short of erasing the partition and starting with a fresh install of WinXP, which is NOT an option). Is there some way to remove the old (or all) Apple drivers in order to install Boot Camp components anew? Or would that even get the keyboard working anyway? Any other ideas at solving this problem? Thanks very much.

    AHA!!!! FIXED IT!!!
    Found another forum post here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7688314&
    And that reminded me that the little Boot Camp grey diamond icon wasn't appearing in the tray like it should. I found KbdMgr.exe and tried to open it, but got an error. So I deleted it and did repair/update from Boot Camp 2.1 Updater, rebooted, and now KbdMgr.exe is running, the icon is in the tray, and the function keys (volume, brightness, etc) are working! Hooray!!
    So in conclusion, this problem may not have been due to the different keyboard layouts, but could've been something about SP3 & BootCamp 2.1. Maybe. Who knows. I'm just happy I've got it working.
