Funky orangeish-red-pinkish "[ ]" symbols all-over my display screen HELP

Hello,
I'm getting these funky looking orangeish red pinkish "[ ]" symbols all-over my display screen in everything. What is it and How to correct it? Is is a virus or a systems glitch? What should i do?
::: Sad worried face :::

I would first try the other DVI port of your graphics card. Then, ensure all connectors are secure, I'd actually disconnect all of them and reconnect them, and see if anything changes.
You can also try reseating your graphics card.

  • I'm getting a pinkish-orange haze over the entire screen--HELP!!!

When using Safari, a very strange situation occurs periodically. As the title says, a semi-opaque pinkish-orange haze covers the screen; if more than one window is open, they all shrink approx. 30%-50% and appear side by side. When I click on any one of them, the haze disappears and they return to normal size and position. This Mac is new as of July '08.
This can occur once a session, but it can happen every 30 seconds. Once, and only once, it locked into a cycle of this every 5 seconds while making a chiming sound. I could not shut my Mac down the normal way, or even by pressing the power switch and holding it down. I had to unplug the power cord to shut it off. I waited until the next day to turn my Mac back on, and everything was normal for a while.
But the haze is occurring more and more frequently, and I'm worried. I've tried booting into the Diagnostic and running both long and short hardware tests. Everything came back normal. I also downloaded Onyx and did the maintenance and cleaning functions. The haze still appears.
I'm at a total loss. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

    Trash your preferences for Safari.
Navigate to your user folder -> Library -> Preferences
    then look for com.apple.safari.plist
    trash that.
It should reset your Safari to its original state.
I'll have to think of what else it could be, though...
Do you notice it when visiting the same sites, or just in general browsing anything?
By 3rd party extensions, I'm referring to stuff for your mac, not safari, like anything by Unsanity (windowshade?) -- anything that manages the way your machine shows windows.

Call apple or take it into an Apple store. What's wrong is beyond a user fix.

  • Symbols all over the place!!

    Hi there,
Have a problem with symbols appearing all over websites, it started with my hotmail getting corrupted (doesn't affect functionality) but when I open up websites I get what I think is Marlett font all over the place (just noticed it where 'header' should be on this page!). The font list has Marlett missing and just a string of symbols instead. Also I've tried downloading 4 seperate anti-virus programmes and I can't open any of them.
There doesn't appear to be any help on Google for this problem on a Mac so - any suggestions? I'm just a button-pressing monkey so any solution which needs anything more technical than a kick I might be struggling!
    Cheers
    Jon

    Which browser are you using?
You may want to try a different browser, just for the sake of seeing if it's caused by the browser itself, or by something else.

  • Red/Blue squares all over...

Just put together a new system last night..  Everything installed fine, worked great.. Came home today and the PC was in sleep mode, woke it up to find hundreds of blue/red squares all over the screen.. They are blue in a white background, red on everything else.   Even on the windows splash screen, they are there, as there on the post screen.  Installed newest drivers for vid card, same problem..

I have no other pci-e card to test out, might try to return this one tomorrow to swap for another.

sound like VGA is overheating or damaged somehow. check cable monitor as well ensure its plugged well into VGA.
    test VGA somewhere else.

  • Replacement of letters by symbols all over my hardrive

On my hardrive there are symbols instead of letters. Instead of my hardrive being named "Tim's iBook" which is 12 characters, it just has the letter A with a box around it 12 times. This is occuring all over the computer, all of the folders... ect. Another example is when I pull down the home, applications, shared files everything is named a with a box around it. Say the name of the folder is home, which is obviously 4 characters, there will be 4 A's with a box around it. Im not sure if this is a virus or what, but I have never seen anything like it.
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Open the folder /System/Library/TextEncodings/ on your hard disk and look at the contents of this folder; there should be the following items in it on a Mac OS X 10.4 system:
    Arabic Encodings.bundle
    Central European Encodings.bundle
    Chinese Encodings Supplement.bundle
    Chinese Encodings.bundle
    Core Encodings.bundle
    Cyrillic Encodings.bundle
    Greek Encodings.bundle
    Hebrew Encodings.bundle
    Indic Encodings.bundle
    Japanese Encodings.bundle
    Korean Encodings.bundle
    Symbol Encodings.bundle
    Thai Encodings.bundle
    Turkish Encodings.bundle
    Unicode Encodings.bundle
    Western Language Encodings.bundle
If any of these are missing, use Pacifist to extract that bundle from your Mac OS X installation disk, and then run the combo updater for your version of Mac OS X. You may need to connect the computer to another Mac with a FireWire cable and start it up with the T key held down to see the filenames.

  • Horizontal stripes flickering all over the display?

    Dear Apple Users,
    I have a macbook pro 15 late 2008 unibody.
I have two videocards in it 9400 and the 9600.
I do have screen problems there are horizontal stripes flickering all over the screen.
They do get more visible when i have dark background.
These stripes arent even staying for a second they come and go and are hardly visible.
I do have apple care i just brought my macbook to apple they have replaced the display (im very thankfull)
But the problem still not solved it is conned to a apple cinema display 30 and now the stripes are also visible on my cinema display.
Is anyone familair with this problem? Could it be my videocard? Or something else?
    Kind Regards,
    OG

I doubt that you have a software 'bug' - looks more as if you're having a problem either with the GPU, the screen or the connection between the two.
Since you're still under warranty, I would advise that you take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them diagnose and fix the problem. I don't believe that it's anything that can be remedied via software.
    Sorry,
    Clinton

  • Horizontal Lines all over Ipod Touch Screen

    Hi,
There are white and multicolored lines all over the Ipod touch display. The device still responds to touch, however.
Does anyone know what could cause this to happen?
I didn't do anything to it. It's been working perfectly. I was using it and the battery was about to die so I put it aside. A few minutes later I tried to wake it again and this is what it looked like:
    http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4027/4391080102324f27e666b.jpg
    Thanks

Have you had any luck at the Apple Store?
I took mine and they said there was nothing they could do. They suspected something had randomly gone wrong with the hardware, but as it was not under warranty they wouldn't be able to do anything about it.
They gave me the option of replacing it for something like $160 or getting 10% a new iPod Touch. I'm not really sure what I'm going to do.

  • Field of vertical lines all over Macbook Pro screen? (+ freezes, beeps)

    Hello, everyone.
Here's my sitch: my MacBook Pro has really been acting out in terms of freezing with fields of vertical lines. Sometimes the screen will revert back to be free of the lines but remains unresponsive OR it shuts itself down and beeps. Sometimes it fails to wake up after sleep and when I attempt to power it on, it beeps. I took my Mac to a service provider and thinking it was a RAM problem, we ordered and put in new RAM. The problem persisted and then the logic board got replaced. Everything was seemingly fine and in working order when one day a kernel panic occurred and everything was happening all over again. I just brought it back to the service provider and we re-installed my original RAM that came with the Mac. It worked fine at first, but then the RAM beeps occurred again as well as the field of vertical lines that halt the whole system. At this point I'm simply confused at what could be the problem, as the Apple Hardware Test detected "no problem found,"  the PRAM/SMC have been reset, it booted up completely fine in safe mode, and I've run Disk Utility on Command + Recovery. The Apple Diagnostics tag also says that everything seems to be OK, but what could be the root of this problem??
Does anyone have any insight or suggestions on this? If so, please let me know. Needless to say, I'm tired of dealing with Mac issues when I really need it for schoolwork and such. (Sidenote: I also no longer have a warranty and for my logic board I got it replaced via an Apple Customer Care Code). Anyhow, many thanks in advance to anyone who might have some input on the matter!
PS. This is what it looks like. These pictures are from two separate occasions whereby the Mac froze and these distorted fields of vertical lines popped up.

Since it was an intermittent issue with mine I took videos/pictures of whenever my laptop locked up. I then showed them to the genius when I took it into the Apple Store. After explaining my situation to them they agreed that it was an unusual problem and replaced my logic board out of warranty for free. I would suggest doing the same but the situation and circumstances may vary so they may not offer the same to you. However, it does not hurt to try.
Also, as I mentioned to mchanxo Apple does offer a flat fee of $280 to replace any hardware that is going bad including the logic board. That could be another option but my concern with that is if it only applies to hardware that does not pass the Apple Hardware Test.
Another thing to note is that the genius told me that the in-store Apple Hardware Test does not test to see if the ram slots are going bad. He said the only way to test it is to put the good RAM in each slots and see if the laptop functions correctly. He also noted that if you do install new RAM you need to reformat your laptop to factory settings because the "OS originally sat on bad memory." I am not too computer savvy so I cannot confirm the validity of his statement but it is worth trying.
    Hope this helps.

  • Imported RAW images badly corrupted, looks like red paint splashed all over the sky.  Photoshop and Iphoto have no problem with the images from my D800E.  Aperture worked fine for me in June with the same camera.  The Nikon software shows no problem.

I am having a problem importing my images into Aperture 3 from my Nikon D800E.  The images appear as if red paint was splashed across the sky.  The Nikon software used to transfer from the camera does not show this problem and Photoshop 6 is fine with the images exported as jpg from the Nikon software.  Aperature does not even like the jpg images usable by Photoshop.  I am suspecting that Aperture is not correctly using the camera raw file.  Also, the histograms are radically different between the corrupted images and the Photoshop (good) versions.  Aperture worked just fine for me in June with the same camera.  All drivers and software are current as of this posting.  Anyone else out there seen this before??

Are you sure you do not have Highlight Hot & Cold Areas turned on? (View->Highlight Hot & Cold Areas)?
The bug in Digital Camera raw only affected Raw images. In your first post you wrote:
Aperature does not even like the jpg images usable by Photoshop
If the JPG's have the same problem then it isn't this bug.

  • Stripes all over the display

    Hey guys!
    I'm new here!
I just want to share something. Since the install of OSX Mavericks my MacBook Pro acts strange. The waiting ball a.k.a rainbow sometimes pops up out of nothing. And some other bugs.
But today i closed the lid and after a few mins i opent my lid and there it was. All kinds of colours and stripes over the screen. Did someone else experienced this problem? The mouse pointer is clearly visible so this means this is an software bug.
Maybe there is something serious? I restarted the MacBook and it works great after that.
Sorry for the bad grammer, English is not my main language.

  • Highlighting text jumps all over - doesn't work - help

Can't get the text highlighting to work. Seems like when I try to highlight, the browser does "whatever it wants, except highlight what I want. Clicking repeatedly causes it to jump around like some kind os a sppoky game!!!! What the hell is this? I never had this problem before the current version of Firefox. I think I will have to abandon Firefox for a browser that actually works, like Chrome.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

  • IPad 1only connects to wifi in room router is in.  Used to connect from all over house.  Any help on this greatly appreciated.  Thanks

How can I get my iPad to connect to wifi in rooms other than the room router is in?  It used to connect from every room & now connection is either intermittent or completely gone.
    Thanks.
Most up to date operating system & software.  Not a problem with Internet provider- already investigated that.

    Try this:
    1. Reset: Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo appears
2.Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings

  • Lines popping up all over the display

I've got the late 2006 White IMac Intel Core 2 Duo.
I've got these horrible lines coming up all the time. It was dealable for a while but I recently moved, and since then it had gotten much worse, and not very good performance. I just erased the hard drive to start fresh, I'm pretty much just using it for streaming videos and now it stalls constantly and the lines are getting worse. My guess is a bad logic board? Anyone got any other thoughts of what it could be or how I could test it?
    Thank for any help

There are a couple of threads on this issue.
I have a late 2006 imac (24" screen) which was experiencing these problems -- lines which were contained to specific windows -- other graphic anomalies -- intermittent freezes as the lines increased. It got quite bad about 3 weeks ago and the computer became virtually unusable.
Genius bar was unhelpful after I shlepped the whole thing in -- suggested doing a clean reinstall of system and also (after my query) suggested replaced the Video Card -- which wasn't in stock anyway.
At any rate, I brought the computer home -- searched the forums and read threads. Based upon MANY suggestions, I downloaded smcfancontrol which increases fan speed and decreases the temperature of the computer. Fingers crossed my problem is solved -- no lines and no freezes since then.
I certainly would recommend trying it before doing anything more drastic. The problem seems to be particularly acute with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphic cards -- perhaps they are more heat sensitive -- perhaps as they age, they become more heat sensitive. That it is heat related (at least for me) is also supported since the computer "crisis" occurred during the first heat wave so the ambient temperature of my condo was higher than it's been in many months.
At any rate, it's a simple application -- if it doesn't work, you haven't invested much but it worked for me and a lot of other people with the identical issue.
