Funky slow Finder behaviore

I have an MP3,1 which is working just fine. It is fast for my needs, and I have never really had a significant problem, until today...
In OSX (10.9.3) I suddenly experience a very very slow Finder...
It takes seconds to open up drives as well as folders... wth...
Funny thing is that if I login as my wife on the very same MP, there is absolutely no problems - fast as usual... I switch back to my login, and it is slow... And, it is only Finder action that is slow. Aperture, iTunes, Photoshop, all is fast as usual...
I haven't made any changes, and any software updates affect my wife as well.
Is there anything that is user specific which would affect OSX in this way?

I appreciate what you are saying, but the programs updated lately, wouldn't they be the same ones in my wife's account? And if one of these were screwing with the system, wouldn't that affect her account as well?

  • "Save As" command with very slow Finder response in Tiger

Ever since upgrading to Tiger using the "Archive & Install" option, my applications have had very slow operation of the "Save As" command. The Finder takes a long time to open and display the Save As window with folders and file name etc. This has occurred on all of my computers - a PowerMac G5, an iMac G4 and a PowerBook G4. It has not changed with upgrades as far as 10.4.5. I have tried the following suggested in another post about slow Finder actions without success:
Refreshing and reblessing the following system files and the folder followed by reboot.
    1. /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    2. /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
    3. /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches/
Trashing the following files and a folder followed by reboot
    1. /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-xxxx.csstore
    2. /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-xxxxxx.csstore
    3. /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/
I have also deleted the /User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist file and rebooted.
Does anyone else have this problem and how do I solve it?

Thank you Roger - this does seem to have solved the problem - my local Apple service people did not have an answer on this, so I'm grateful

  • Changing OS X's default "Find" behavior

Is there a way to change the Finder's "Find" behavior so it DOES NOT automatically / immediately start searching your hard drive(s) and volumes as soon as you begin typing a term in the search field? I'd like to disable this feature if possible.

3rd party tools and copying and pasting
    are not really that desirable.
You can use Automator to do most of the work for you.
Open Automator and drag the following Actions to the right-hand side workflow pane, in this order:
    1) Ask for Text -- The purpose of this action is to create a dialog box into which you'll enter your search term. In the upper field (pre-populated with the word "Question"), enter a text query appropriate to the task at hand, "Search for..." or "Search Spotlight..." for example. Leave the Default Answer field blank.
    2) Copy to Clipboard -- Copies the text you entered in the dialog box to the Clipboard.
    3) Spotlight -- Opens Spotlight automatically. Make sure to check "Show Action When Run" under Options. At this point you need only paste into the Spotlight search field and Spotlight will begin searching.
Test the Automator workflow by selecting Workflow > Run; when you find it works properly, File > Save As an Application.
While it would be ideal if in step 3 Spotlight would open with the search term already populated, thus making pasting unnecessary, I haven't found a way. However, there is a 3rd-party application called Laserlight 2.0.3 which will do just that. Good luck!

  • Slow finder start up at airport card boot

    Hi,
For some reason my macbook pro 17" is extremely slow at start-up, when it gets to the part where it's loading the airport and battery icon (after logging in as a user). Any internet related applications (ichat, safari, entourage) are also slow to start if I try it soon after booting up. I'm also having problems connecting to the internet via the airport. The signal is at full strength, but there is no internet connection. This was all working the day before yesterday, and when I plug in directly to the cable internet connection via ethernet, the internet works.
One other catch is that I'm in a foreign country and don't have any startup CDs/DVDs with me, and it would be cost-prohibitive for me to call applecare (which I'd really like to do!). Also couldn't figure out how to contact applecare via ichat (there are still some luddites among us, apologies). Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Downloading 10.4.9 update - problems downloading, says it sent the file to the trash and I can retrieve it and try again. Did that, but it didn't work.
    Resetting PRAM at start up
    AIRPORT:
    downloaded software updates
tried plugging directly into internet connection, and that works fine.

You should never let your hard drive get less than 15% empty. This number is an arbitrary number that most have found to be the maximum you can have and still have a relatively smooth riding system. That may not directly affect wireless internet, but the speed of caching for the browser gets harder as it has lack of space to write to when it gets too full. The speed of startup is also affected as caches are written when the startup happens.

  • App Launches, Slow Finder, Strange Behavior...

Usually I can troubleshoot whatever comes my way, but this truly has me stumped:
    1. After some regular use on my MBP, apps stop launching and I get the beachball. Unresponsive apps have included: Pages, Keynote, Numbers, System Preferences, Word '08, iChat, Safari.
    2. In looking for a clue, the only thing I've noticed is an error message repeated constantly in console: mDNSResponder[22]: ERROR: mDNSPlatformTCPConnect - connect failed: socket 24: Error 13 Permission denied
    3. Very slow response to Finder. Applications folder lags in being able to scroll and click on anything.
I've tried cleaning out cache and checking for fonts and all the other maintenance tricks that one can do. All that will temporarily fix the launching apps problem is a reboot.
Help would be greatly appreciated. I'm am close to running the new DiskWarrior, but with trepidation since I don't know anyone that has DW-ed Leopard.

  • Newbie question: Slow Finder in 2nd drive?

Just getting used to having a Mac Pro with two (eventually more) internal drives.
I have the original 250 GB drive in bay 1, the add-on Hitachi Deskstare (400 GB) in bay 2.
When I access the drive in bay 2 - "browsing" my backup archives for photos (have about 28,000 images) using either PhotoShop, PhotoShop Elements or GraphicConverter, there is about 7 seconds where the browser windows are blank and the spinning ball appears, then the window shows the folders of my archive normally.
This doesn't happen with the boot drive in bay 1, only the larger drive in bay 2. Is this normal behavior? I ask because I have an external firewire drive connected to my eMac and it's much quicker to browse the archives in it. Seems disappointing if the internal drives in the Mac Pro are that slow to access.

Yes, I intentionally checked the "when possible" button when setting up.
I did that as a concession, since I have the boot drive sleep set to "Never" and the 24-inch LCD display set to 2 hours for sleep. My experience includes only the Mac all-in-one designs so far and I'm still leary of what my electric bill will look like when it arrives.
I'll uncheck and see if that "does it" as far as opening finder or browser windows more quickly.
I'll say right away without checking: I should have thought of that (setting) because only the "first" Drive 2 window takes 7 seconds to open. After I can see the folders in that (storage) drive, I can then open them "instantly" and bore down through sub-folders just as quickly (in other words, have normal behavior).
I'll see what happens and get back on this in a couple hours.

  • Slow Finder refresh in 10.6.7

Has anyone else had a problem with Finder taking 20–30 seconds to refresh when new files are created in 10.6.7?
E.g., printing a document as a PDF to Desktop -- PDF does not immediately appear, but if the operation is tried again, I'm asked if I want to overwrite the existing file; so the file is there, but not yet visible. A few seconds later it pops up.

For general speeds issues here's what you want to try:
PRAM/NVRAM Reset: Turn on the computer holding CMD-Option-P-R (Command-Option-P-R) and keep holding until you get a second start up chime (more are perfectly alright)
Clear the caches: Go to each users home folder by opening up finder. Go into the Library folder and find a folder called Caches. Drag that into the trash. Do it for all users, restart and empty trash (files are still active so you can't delete until restart)
Then you want to go into Safari on each User and click on the word Safari in the top right hand corner. Go down to Reset Safari and have everything checked but: Reset topsites, clear history, remove other autofill form text, remove passwords
Shut down your computer, on boot it may be a bit slower because of all the resets it's auto regenerating a bunch of files, but over all your system should be faster
Specifically for you two, the caches folder removal is the most important

  • Slow Finder on iMac running OS 10.8.5

    Hey Apple gurus!
I have a problem with my iMac running OS 10.8.5. It started from nowhere. All the software is running absolutely fine but as soon as I get to a finder and trying to open a folder and/or move between files in a folder within the finder or click a preview, a movie or a photo, it takes 10-15 seconds for a computer to "wake up". It just spinning until it finally catches is up and eventually it does what I want. Than I can browse in the finder between files with no problem until I pause for few minutes and when I am trying to navigate through folders again the same "wake up" problem. Its very annoying and really slows me down. I went through Apple utilities few times, I thought maybe its going to fix the problem, but it made no difference. I thought maybe its my USB devices and disconnected them all but still the same problem. Any suggestions how to fix it.
    Thanks.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

A number of problems exist including the notorious MacKeeper. Start by removing it according to the instructions below.
Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice).
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it.
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.
An apparently modified Hosts file is another concern, which is apparently blocking Adobe software requests to contact its server for whatever reason it needs to do that. If you know the reason for altering Hosts then you can troubleshoot it on the basis of that knowledge. If you do not know the reason, it often occurs as a result of installing pirated or "cracked" software to circumvent its ability to contact an external host to verify their software was legitimately obtained. If that's the case then anything is possible as a result of having installed illegally obtained software.
Awesome Screenshot is adware. Most people don't install such things unless they are deceived into doing so.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. For Safari, go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone. For browsers other than Safari, perform the equivalent actions.
For an explanation or how this may have occurred and how to avoid it in the future read How to install adware.
Uninstall the following according to their respective instructions.
    MicroMat "TechTool Pro"
    Western Digital "drive utility" software
    Intego "Washing Machine"
You need to be much more circumspect regarding the software you choose to install on your Mac. May I suggest that you review the following setting in System Preferences?
Although you may easily override that setting, it will serve to protect you from inadvertently installing garbage.

  • After Update Bizarre jump back to Finder Behavior

I have always dutifully used Software Update to stay on top of things.
In some cases it has revealed problems. What a surprise.
The most recent update to 10.4.5, or the latest Security update has introduced an annoying behavior that doesnt make much sense and I wonder if anybody else has encountered it.
If I have multiple windows open (Safari, Mail, iPhoto...) after less than 30 secs. the user interface always jumps back to the Finder, no matter what I am doing. As I type this if I hesitate for more than a few seconds the keyboard wont respond because I am in the Finder again...GRRRR...irritating behavior. You then have to click on the window (Safari whatever it was you were doing) to then continue scrolling, typing whatever.
Anybody else? No its not Screen saver activating its like 15-30 sec delay and Bam back to the Finder.
I have reported this to AppleCare (mine just expired) and the case number is 60078651...the squeaky wheel gets greased if you experience the same issue use this case number to complain en masse.

    Hi, f/64.
    1. Well, you can delete the Finder preferences (see also my "Finder Issues? How to delete its preferences" FAQ) as macjack suggests, but I don't think that's the issue.
    2. It sounds like some application or background process is actually switching the focus to Finder. Since this seems to have arisen after recent updates, this makes me suspect a Startup or Login Item that has been rendered incompatible by the update. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    3. A good way to avoid such problems with updates is to follow the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ.
    4. You've not provided any information concerning your Mac itself: model, RAM, if you are using a third-party keyboard or mouse (brands of each), etc. so more details about your system would be helpful.
    5. A couple of "off the wall" ideas:
    • An errant folder action script. If you've not enabled any of these, don't worry about that.
    • Some people have experimented with installing FrontRow on Macs which did not come equipped with such via a variety of hacks posted on the Internet. This has caused some problems, including the loss of all menu extras, the icons on the right side of the menu bar, and repeated crashes of SystemUIServer, which controls menu extras.
    6. After the problem occurs, you may want to check Console for clues.
    Good luck!

  • Problems with slow finder and com.apple.finder.plist

I have four users in my marketing department, all running Mac Pros with 10.6. and Adobe CS5 and some other software for design work. Each one has a slowness issue using the Finder (by itself and inside programs (ie, within Photoshop and going to Open)) when accessing our network drives.  Other people, including myself, can access those same directories without slowness.
'Slowness' is an understatement. What would normally take a second is taking 5 to 10 minutes to show content in folders.
When I delete "com.apple.finder.plist" off their systems, and reboot, everything snaps back to being speedy, but it doesn't last and they need to remove that file once a day.
I have two saved plist files before they deleted it, but I don't know what do look for when I view the contents with a plist editor.
Can anyone offer some suggestions on why this could be happening? Or how can I view and see what this file is being hung up on?

Download and run all the cleaning and maintainence aspects of the free OnyX while each machine is offline and reboot, leave offline until all are completed and then put them back online.
See if that clears the issue or reveals some more issues with the checks.
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx
OnyX also has a plist checker under Verify.

  • Question about Finder Behavior

When I go to Finder/Go/Network, sometimes the Finder won't open the Network window, and when it does, the icons are won't stay in icon-view mode. Any ideas what the problem might be?
Also, when I run System Maintenance Scripts, will they clean up all the partitions? Thanks.

The maintenance scripts only run on the active startup volume. If you have other partitions that do not have OS X installed, then there's no need to run the maintenance scripts on those volumes. If you do have OS X installed on the other volumes, then you will have to start up from them to run the maintenance scripts on those volumes.
Note that with Tiger there's little need to force the maintenance scripts to run unless you turn off your computer. If the computer is simply put to sleep, then the scripts will be run automatically at or near that time. With Tiger and later OS X uses launchd to run the maintenance scripts and no longer relies on using cron. Though not significantly different in Leopard there are some improvements in this behavior over those in Tiger. See the following excerpt for The XLab FAQs FAQ on maintenance scripts:
    *Scheduling under Tiger*
Under Tiger, the new launchd process invokes each script on a schedule specified in a script-specific property list (.plist file) in the /System/Library/LaunchDaemons directory. The specific property list for each script is as follows:
    daily script: com.apple.periodic-daily.plist
    weekly script: com.apple.periodic-weekly.plist
    monthly script: com.apple.periodic-monthly.plist
How the timer used by launchd handles sleep time has led many to believe that they no longer need to run the maintenance scripts, and that the scripts are run automatically if the Mac was asleep or shutdown at the scheduled time, ala third-party utilities such as Anacron. However, this is untrue.
While it may appear that launchd executes the maintenance scripts "on the fly" if the computer is asleep or shutdown at the appointed time, this is a side effect of how the timer treats time the computer has spent in sleep mode. The timer used by launchd does not count sleep time. If your Mac is asleep at the scheduled time at which a given script is supposed to run, the script may run later that day, at a time shifted by the amount of time the Mac was asleep. However, if you restart your Mac before the time-shifted execution time, pending events are lost and the script will not run off-schedule: the next chance for the script to run will be at its regularly scheduled time.
If you regularly restart your Mac and the computer regularly sleeps or is shutdown at the scheduled times, it's possible that the scripts will never run, hence one should still run them manually, say on a weekly basis.
The sleep time shift is also cumulative. For example, if you don't restart your Mac for weeks or months at a time, but let it sleep when not in use, this can result in:
The daily script running once every few days or never.
The weekly script once every few weeks or never.
The monthly script once every few months or never.
The time shift in each case is the total amount of time the Mac has spent in sleep since its last restart. If you have a process that writes heavily to the logs, you can wind up devoting good hard disk space to the log files.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Finder icon previews slowing finder

I work with a lot of pdf files, and as finder shows pdf icons as a preview of the first page it can take a long time before the content of a folder stabilises itself, ie: updates all icons with a preview of its content.
Its particularly frustrating if you are renaming a file, as you have to wait for all the contents within the folder to finish updating otherwise it keeps skipping off the desired file.
Is there any way of getting the finder to just show the generic icon of a file, rather than the preview? It would speed up the system no end.

Thumbnails don't slow down the Finder. The problem is in the view style you are using. The bug where you loose your file rename session when the thumbnails draw is a known bug in List View that has been around for a couple OS releases, it has only been made more prominant with the addition of thumbnails in List View in Leopard.
The solution is either switch to Icon or Column View, or while in List View press Command-J and uncheck the "Show Icon Previews" checkbox. The click the "Use As Defaults" button.
    Hope that helps.
